ABSTRACT

This study investigated the efficacy of MMPI Form R in evaluating chronic low back pain patients. Ninety-seven males and 81 females were administered Form R during a pre-treatment evaluation. Each test was scored for Form R and MMPI-168. Scales Pa and Sc were re-scored following a modified conversion table discussed in the literature, resulting in three scores for Pa and Sc. Correlations were calculated between scales on the two forms plus modified conversions for scales Pa and Sc. Highly significant correlations were found between the two forms of the MMPI, with slightly lower correlations between modified Pa and Sc scales and the same scales on Form R. Although there were statistical differences between MMPI Form R and MMPI-168 profile elevations, these were not considered clinically significant. Because of the high intercorrelations, and the test length it seems possible to consider use of the MMPI-168 in screening chronic pain patients. Other hypotheses exploring sex differences and differential profile elevations were investigated and are discussed.

ABSTRACT

This paper describes the development of a theoretical cost effectiveness model used to optimize admission and discharge decisions in comprehensive rehabilitation centers. Rehabilitation progress and outcome is conceptualized in terms of functional gains due to treatment. The model is constructed with three variables: functional level at admission (Barthel), Barthel function gained per unit cost (BUC) and the percentage improvement in function from admission to discharge. The theoretical model is then tested with data from a random sample of 97 spinal cord injured and 132 focal cerebral patients drawn from ten leading comprehensive rehabilitation centers located across the continental United States. The basic structure of the model is supported by the data and the use of such models as aids in managing patients, evaluating services, planning new programs, and developing computer simulation models of rehabilitation cost effectiveness is discussed.

ABSTRACT

This investigation studied the disability attitudes of ten population subgroups including the general public, professionals, college and grade school students and disabled individuals. A total of 2576 subjects were tested in a seven-year period with one of three instruments. The results showed that a stable hierarchy of preference characterized these seemingly disparate groups.
