ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study evaluated the changes in psychological stress during in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET) and the relationship of such stress to the patients' background and gender. Methods: Sixty couples undergoing IVF-ET were administered the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-JYZ (STAI) test at six different points during IVF-ET procedures. Anxiety scores at each time point were recorded and analyzed according to gender, fertility status, and duration of treatment. Results: The median state anxiety score for women increased following induction until oocyte collection, after which it temporarily declined and then increased again until the pregnancy test. No such changes were noted in men. Scores for women who had undergone a shorter period of IVF treatments were higher while state and trait anxiety in men increased with a prolonged treatment period. Unsuccessful treatment increased the state and trait anxiety of women. Conclusions: Psychological stress changed periodically depending on the duration of the patients' treatment and fertility status also influenced anxiety levels. These findings will prove helpful in guiding psychological therapy and counseling for couples attempting to conceive by in vitro fertilization.

ABSTRACT

The mitogenic activity of extracellular polysaccharides produced by Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus OLL 1073R-1 and NCFB2483 was examined in murine lymphocytes. The extracellular polysaccharide from Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus OLL 1073R-1 was fractionated into neutral and acidic polysaccharides by anion-exchange chromatography, while that of Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus NCFB2483 were all fractionated into neutral polysaccharide(s). The acidic polysaccharide stimulated mitogenic responses of murine splenocytes and Peyer's patches but not of thymocytes. The optimal concentration of the acidic polysaccharide at the highest stimulation was 160 microg/ml. A significant increase of mitogenic activity was initiated at 24 h, and the highest response was obtained after stimulation for 48 h. The acidic polysaccharide purified by high performance liquid chromatography also had substantial mitogenic activity, and the molecular weight was estimated to be 1.2 x 10(6). The acidic polysaccharide was a phosphopolysaccharide consisting of glucose, galactose and phosphorus. Dephosphorylation by hydrofluoric acid degradation reduced the mitogenic activity in lymphocytes. The phosphopolysaccharide produced by Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus 1073R-1 is a potent B-cell-dependent mitogen in which the phosphate group acts as a trigger of the mitogenic induction.

ABSTRACT

It is generally known that meningioma has histological pleomorphism and ossification is one of them. In the cases of spinal meningioma, osteoblastic type is rare. We encountered two different types of ossified spinal meningioma. Two cases of ossified spinal meningioma are reported in this paper. One case is that of a 45-year-old male who had a sudden transient tetraparesis with a tumor located in the upper cervical spinal column. The tetraparesis was caused by the patient's head having been hit. Another case is a 74-year-old female, who had progressive paraparesis and hypesthesia in her lower extremities, with a tumor located in the 9th thoracic spinal column. The MRI findings in these cases suggested that an ossified area was included in the tumor. We performed surgical therapy in both cases, and an operative finding was that these tumors had a very hard component. Histopathological diagnosis in both cases was meningioma. The former included isolated matured bone tissue with fat marrow mixed with the tumor tissue, and the latter included scattered matured lamellar bone tissue. These tumors are considered to be osteoblastic in type.

ABSTRACT

Three-dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance (MR) angiography using radiofrequency presaturation pulses was used to evaluate the patency of extracranial-intracranial (EC/IC) bypass in 11 patients. Presaturation causes signal loss in the vascular territory supplied by the presaturated EC/IC bypass graft. In all patients with a patent EC/IC bypass graft confirmed on conventional angiography, disappearance of the signal of the middle cerebral artery receiving blood flow from the bypass graft was clearly observed on MR angiograms with presaturation, indicating patency of the EC/IC bypass graft. MR angiography with presaturation pulses is a noninvasive and repeatable method for evaluation of the function of an EC/IC bypass graft.
