ABSTRACT
Aspergillus parasiticus was grown in a modified Lab-Lemco tryptone broth both as a single culture and in association with Lactococcus lactis. Total aflatoxin (B1 + G1) production was higher in the mixed cultures. This stimulation persisted when different batches of media, inoculation procedures and makes of ingredients were used. Aflatoxin yields increased in media with an initial pH of 4.2 compared with a pH close to neutrality. Hydrochloric and/or lactic acid had little effect. The substitution of half the carbon content of the medium by lactate resulted in stimulation or reduction on aflatoxin production when the initial pH was 4.2 or 6.8, respectively.

A brief review of the pathogenesis of actinomycotic infections, including cause, frequency, distribution, and symptoms has been presented. A relatively rare occurrence of actinomycosis in the tongue was reported to serve as an illustration of the diagnostic and therapeutic considerations pertinent to this disease.

A case of cherubism of the mandible with an atypical history and with the onset of the facial deformity delayed until after puberty has been reported. The patient was treated during a relatively inactive stage, which followed a year of rather active growth. The distinct facial deformities were treated by a combination of curettage and recontouring, which resulted in an improved facial appearance and elimination of the fibro-osseous lesions of the mandible.

An instance of leiomyoma of the tongue has been reported. The theories of origin of smooth muscle tumors within the oral cavity have been reviewed. The necessity for differentiation of leiomyomas from other spindle-cell tumors and the need for thorough examination of the specimen have been discussed. Complete surgical excision of these tumors is the preferred treatment.

An unusual case of a bilateral pathological fracture of the mandible has been presented. The fracture of the right side of the mandible was through an area of bacteroides osteomyelitis and the fracture of the left side of the mandible was through a large cementifying fibroma, which had replaced the left body of the mandible.

Basal-cell carcinoma most commonly occurs in men in the fifth to seventh decades of life. The area of the lesion is usually one that has frequent exposure to the sun: the middle third of the face and upper lip. An unusual case of basal-cell carcinoma occurring on the lower lip and involving the commissure in a 21-year-old woman is presented. The surgical procedures for resection of the tumor and reconstruction of the commissure are described.
