ABSTRACT

Aim: This study is done to investigate the hypolipidemic and hepatoprotective effects of corn silk extract in nicotine-administered male mice. Background: Nicotine can induce pathophysiological effects in the liver tissue through oxidative stress and damage cells. Corn silk can improve liver function with its antioxidant effects. Methods: In this experimental study, 30 male NMRI mice (25-30 gr) were divided into 5 groups: controls, sham, nicotine 2.5 mg/kg, nicotine+aqueous extract of corn silk 400 mg/kg, and nicotine+methanolic extract of corn silk 400 mg/kg for 1 month. One day after the last nicotine and extracts consumption, the serum samples were performed for biochemical measurement, and the supernatant of the homogenized liver was administered for antioxidant variables assessment. Results: There was no significant difference in the body weight of different groups. Liver weight and GSH decreased in the nicotine group compared to the control group (P<0.05). Triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, liver enzymes, and MDA increased in the nicotine group compared to the control group (P<0.05). Also, the expansion of sinusoids, the presence of inflammatory cells, and necrosis of liver cells were observed in the nicotine group compared to the control group. Using aqueous and methanolic extracts of corn silk in mice receiving nicotine led to the improvement of the mentioned variables (P<0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the use of nicotine can lead to the induction of hepatotoxicity. The use of aqueous and methanolic extracts of corn silk improved them through its antioxidant activity.

BACKGROUND: To assess the effect of preoperative smoking cessation on postoperative complications in patients undergoing herniorrhaphy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study was conducted on 163 consecutive patients, undergoing herniorrhaphy. Demographic characteristics and postoperative complications were compared between smokers (group A), patients who reduced smoking by 50% (group B), and patients who completely quit smoking (group C). RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 42.9 (SD=10.3) years. Group A (n=77), group B (n=27), and group C (n=59) were not significantly different in terms of age, body mass index (BMI), medical history, laboratory data, smoking habit, type of hernia, type of anesthesia, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) class, repair method, surgery approach, and duration surgery (P>0.05 for all). However, significant differences were observed between group B and group A, group C and group A, and group C and group B regarding postoperative complications, such as wound healing complications and length of hospital stay (LOS) (P<0.05 for all). CONCLUSION: Decreased preoperative smoking is associated with the reduced risk of respiratory, cardiovascular, and wound healing complications and decreased LOS in patients undergoing herniorrhaphy.

AIMS: Type 2 diabetes is a serious health challenge, and large-scale studies on its prevalence in Iran are lacking. In pharmacoepidemiology, case-finding can be done by reviewing the prescription databases for specific drug(s) prescribed for a disease. We aimed to determine the prevalence and incidence of type 2 diabetes in Fars province, Iran, using prescription data and a stepwise approach to ascertain the results. METHODS: A dataset of 3,113 insured individuals aged ≥35 years were selected. Their Prescription Data Centre records were reviewed for all drugs frequently used in controlling type 2 diabetes available in the Iranian pharmacopeia. Then we used a stepwise method for case-finding. In step one, each individual with a positive drug history for type 2 diabetes was labeled as an individual with diabetes. The next two steps were implemented for ascertainment of step one estimations. RESULTS: Prevalence of type 2 diabetes based on prescription, internist opinion, and phone call verification in 2015 and 2016 was 9.3% and 10.3%, 8.5% and 9.8%, and 7.2% and 8.7%, respectively. An incidence of 1.9% was determined for 2016. CONCLUSIONS: We obtained a realistic estimation of prevalence and incidence of treated type 2 diabetes, using prescription data which are large-scale, low cost, and real-time.

ABSTRACT

Density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio (Hartree-Fock) calculations employing the 6-31G* basis set are used to determine gas-phase proton microaffinities (PA(n,i)) of two bulky symmetrical tripodal tetraamine ligands N[(CH2)(4)NH2]3, trbn, and N[(CH2)(5)NH2]3, trpa. The corresponding proton macroaffinities (PA(n)) are calculated not only according to our recently established method but also considering two alternative formulas based on a Boltzmann distribution. The successive protonation macroconstants in aqueous solution for these bulky amines are predicted from the well-defined correlation between the calculated proton macroaffinities, without considering Boltzmann distribution, and the corresponding log Kn for these amines. The overall protonation constants are also predicted by two different methods.

ABSTRACT

We examined the cytotoxic potential of nine N-[2-substituted-2-(2-thienyl)ethyl] piperazinyl quinolone derivatives on human oral epithelial mouth carcinoma (KB) and human squamous carcinoma (A431) cell lines. Phototoxic properties of these compounds were also evaluated by mouse 3T3 fibroblast under ultraviolet-A (UVA) irradiation. The percent of cell viability was evaluated by MTT assay. Compound 6 having a 4-[2-(phenylmethoxyimino)-2-(2-thienyl)ethyl] group attached to N4 position of piperazine ring of enoxacin showed the highest cytotoxicity potential on both A431 and KB cell lines (IC50 of 3.11+/-0.52 and 4.91+/-1.94 microg/ml, respectively). While some of the other tested compounds exhibited clear phototoxic potential in 3T3 cell line, compound 6 showed only a minor potential of phototoxicity. These findings suggest the high potential of 4-[2-(phenylmethoxyimino)-2-(2-thienyl)ethyl] derivative of enoxacin as a cytotoxic compound with low potency of phototoxic reactions. The mentioned chemical was identified to be of special interest for further characterization.
