ABSTRACT

Eco-friendly poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA) can be made more versatile, and its crystallization rate is accelerated by adding Zinc-based metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) particles. Using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the non-isothermal melt crystallization behavior of biodegradable PLA nucleated by 0.3 to 3 wt% of Zn-MOF was examined. The non-isothermal melt crystallization kinetics parameters were determined using a modified Avrami model and Mo approach. Zn-MOF dramatically accelerated the crystallization process, as evidenced by several non-isothermal crystallization metrics, including the crystallization half-time and crystallization rate constant. The melt crystallization temperatures of the PLA-Zn-MOF composites, with contents of 0.7 and 1 wt%, were increased by 21 °C compared to the neat PLA. Using the Friedman isoconversional kinetic method, the neat PLA and PLA-Zn-MOF composites' effective activation energy values, ∆E, were determined. The ∆E values of PLA-Zn-MOF from 0.3 to 1 wt% Zn-MOF composites were lower than that of neat PLA. Moreover, polarized optical microscopy revealed the formation of numerous small-sized PLA spherulites upon Zn-MOF addition. The results indicate that the Zn-MOF (at concentrations of 0.7 to 1.0 wt%) can be used as an efficient nucleating agent for PLA, where it increases the melt crystallization temperature, nucleation density, and crystallinity without changing the crystalline structure, while also significantly reduces the effective activation energy and the size of spherulites. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy confirms good dispersion of Zn-MOF (0.3 to 1 wt%) within the PLA matrix.

ABSTRACT

4-Acetylpyridine 1 and malononitrile 2 were allowed to react in a 3MCRs with dimedone 3a or cyclohexa-1,3-dione 3b under reflux to afford 4-methyl-4-(pyridin-4-yl)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-chromene derivatives 4a,b respectively. The mechanism of the reaction has been studied and the structures elucidated by analytical, spectral as well as X-ray crystallographic data. Heterocyclic compounds find widespread application in pharmaceutical and agrochemical products. Docking analyses were performed on the synthesized compounds to assess their binding modes with various amino acids of the target protein tubulin (PDB Code - 1SA0). The results indicated promising binding scores for compounds 4a and 4b, suggesting a strong affinity for the tubulin binding site. Finally, ADMET for the synthesized compounds 4a, 4b, 5, 8a and 8b were carried out. The drug likeness and pharmacokinetic properties of the prepared compounds were also evaluated. Notably, all of the novel compounds adhered to Lipinski's rule (Ro5) without any violations.

ABSTRACT

The main objective of this study is to synthesize and characterize of a new three complexes of Pd (II), Cu (II), and Cu (I) metal ions with novel ligand ((Z)-2-(phenylamino)-N'-(thiophen-2-ylmethylene)acetohydrazide) H2LB. The structural composition of new compounds was assessed using several analytical techniques including FT-IR, 1H-NMR, electronic spectra, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermal behavior analysis. The Gaussian09 program employed the Density Functional Theory (DFT) approach to optimize the geometry of all synthesized compounds, therefore obtaining the most favorable structures and crucial parameters. An investigation was conducted to examine the impact of γ-irradiation on ligands and complexes. Before and after γ-irradiation, the antimicrobial efficiency was investigated for the activity of ligands and their chelates. The Cu(I) complex demonstrated enhanced antibacterial activity after irradiation, as well as other standard medications such as ampicillin and gentamicin. Similarly, the Cu(I) complex exhibited superior activity against antifungal species relative to the standard drug Nystatin. The docking investigation utilized the target location of the topoisomerase enzyme (2xct) chain A.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: sepsis is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in pediatric cancer patients. We sought to assess the impact of using rapid molecular diagnostic techniques on time to pathogen identification, early administration of targeted antimicrobial treatment, and hospital outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This prospective study was conducted at the Egyptian National Cancer Institute (1/2018-1/2019) on pediatric cancer patients with suspected sepsis. The cohort was divided into two groups. In one group, blood samples were sent for rapid molecular detection [multiplex-Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)] and blood cultures (PCR-group). While only blood cultures were collected for the second group (BC-group). RESULTS: In the entire cohort (n=120), the most common bacteria identified on blood cultures was Escherichia Coli (n=33,27.5%) followed by Klebsiella (n=31,25.8%). Multidrug-resistant bacteria were identified in 63 patients (52.5%). The median turnaround time to initial results was 5 hours in PCR-group (n=60), and 120 hours in BC-group (n=60)(P<0.001). For PCR-group, agreement in pathogen identification between the rapid molecular detection kit (PCR) and blood cultures was noted in 56 patients (93.3%). While the remaining four patients had no bacterial growth on blood cultures. The empirical antibiotic treatment for the PCR-group was modified based on the result of the PCR test. Antibiotic shift, based on blood culture sensitivity results, was done in 29 patients (48%) in PCR-group, compared to 45 patients (75%) in BC-group (P=0.003). Median sepsis episode duration [8-days vs. 10-days,P=0.361), and hospital mortality (42% vs. 50%, P=0.360) were slightly lower in PCR-group. However, this did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSION: There was a substantial agreement in pathogen identification between the rapid molecular detection method (PCR) and blood culture results. PCR had a much shorter turnaround time, which allows for earlier start of optimal antimicrobial treatment, and might potentially improve hospital outcomes, which in turn will reduce associated health care costs.

ABSTRACT

Nano-structure Cu(II) complex [Cu(AMAB)2 ]Cl2 with Schiff base (AMAB) derived from the condensation between 4-(dimethylamino)benzaldehyde and amoxicillin trihydrate was prepared. (AMAB) Schiff base and its Cu(II) complex were identified and confirmed by different physicochemical techniques. The Schiff base (AMAB) was coordinated to copper ion through carbonyl oxygen and imine nitrogen donor sites. X-ray powder diffraction shows a cubic crystal system of the Cu(II) complex. The density functional theory was used to optimize the structure geometries of the investigated compounds. The molecular docking of the active amino acids of the investigated proteins' interactions with the tested compounds was evaluated. The bactericidal or bacteriostatic effect of the compounds was screened against some bacterial strains. The activity of Cu-chelate against Gram-negative bacteria was mainly more effective than its (AMAB) ligand and vice versa in the case of Gram-positive bacteria. The biological activity of the prepared compounds with biomolecules calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) was determined by electronic absorption spectra and DNA gel electrophoresis technique. All studies revealed that the Cu-chelate derivative exhibited better binding affinity to both CT-DNA than the AMAB and amoxicillin itself. The anti-inflammatory effect of the designed compounds was determined by testing their protein denaturation inhibitory activity spectrophotometrically. All obtained data supported that the designed nano-Cu(II) complex with Schiff base (AMAB) is a potent bactericide against H. pylori, and exhibits anti-inflammatory activity. The dual inhibition effects of the designed compound represent a modern therapeutic approach with extended spectrum of action. Therefore, it can act as good drug target in antimicrobial and anti-inflammtory therapies. Finally, H. pylori resistance to amoxicillin is absent or rare in many countries, thus amoxicillin nanoparticles may be beneficial for countries where amoxicillin resistance is reported.

ABSTRACT

Four new complexes (Ni2+, Cu2+, Ag+, and Hg2+) were prepared from the ligand N-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-(phenylglycyl)hydrazine-1-carbothioamide (H2L). Analytical and spectroscopic techniques were used to clarify the structural composition of the new chelates. In addition, all chelates were tested against bacterial strains and the HepG2 cell line to determine their antiseptic and carcinogenic properties. The Ni(II) complex was preferable to the other chelates. Molecular optimization revealed that H2L had the highest reactivity, followed by Hg-chelate, Ag-chelate, Ni-chelate, and Cu-chelate. Moreover, molecular docking was investigated against two different proteins: the ribosyltransferase enzyme (code: 3GEY) and the EGFR tyrosine kinase receptor (code: 1m17).

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of obesity has increased the incidence of obesity-related coagulation disorders. The current study assessed the effectiveness of combined aerobic exercise and laser phototherapy on the coagulation profile and body measurements in older adults with obesity compared to aerobic exercise alone, which has not been adequately explored. We included 76 obese people (50% women and 50% men) with a mean age of 67.83 ± 4.84 years and a body mass index of 34.55 ± 2.67 kg/m2. The participants were randomly assigned to the experimental group (which received aerobic training with laser phototherapy) and the control group (which received aerobic training alone) for three months. From the baseline to the final analysis, the absolute changes in specific coagulation biomarker levels (fibrinogen, fibrin fragment D, prothrombin time, Kaolin-Cephalin Coagulation Time), and contributing parameters (C-reactive protein and total cholesterol), were assessed. In comparison to the control group, the experimental group showed significant improvements in all evaluated measures (p < 0.001). So, in comparison to aerobic exercise alone, combined aerobic exercise and laser phototherapy had superior positive effects on coagulation biomarkers and decreased the risk of thromboembolism throughout a three-month intervention period in senior obese persons. Therefore, we suggest adopting laser phototherapy for individuals with a greater risk of hypercoagulability.The research was entered into the database of clinical trials under the identification NCT04503317.

ABSTRACT

Multidrug resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii is a critical opportunistic pathogen in healthcare-associated infections (HAI). This is attributed to several factors, including its ability to develop biofilms that can enhance antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in addition to creating an environment for horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes. The role of the efflux pump in biofilm formation is important for studies on alternative treatments for biofilms. One of the significant efflux pump families is the RND efflux pump family, which is common in Gram negative bacteria. The aim is to study the role of the RND efflux pump in biofilm formation by A. baumannii. The biofilm formation potential of thirty-four MDR A. baumannii isolates was evaluated by crystal violet assays. The effect of efflux pump inhibition and activation was studied using the efflux pump inhibitor carbonyl cyanide 3-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP) and the RND efflux pump substrate levofloxacin (at sub-MIC), respectively. The isolates were genotypically grouped by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) typing and the expression of adeABC, adeFGH, and adeIJK efflux pump genes was measured by qPCR. Overall, 88.2% (30/34) of isolates were biofilm producers (the phenotype was variable including strong and weak producers). Efflux pump inhibition by CCCP reduced the biofilm formation significantly (p < 0.05) in 17.6% (6/34) of some isolates, whereas sub-MICs of the substrate levofloxacin increased biofilm formation in 20.5% (7/34) of other isolates. Overexpression of the three RND efflux pump genes was detected in five out of eleven selected isolates for qPCR with remarkable overexpression in the adeJ gene. No correlation was detected between the biofilm phenotype pattern and the RND efflux pump gene expression in biofilm cells relative to planktonic cells. In conclusion, the role of the RND efflux pumps AdeABC, AdeFGH, and AdeIJK in biofilm formation does not appear to be pivotal and the expression differs according to the genetic background of each strain. Thus, these pumps may not be a promising target for biofilm inhibition.

A new series of Zr(IV), V(IV), Ru(III), and Cd(II) complexes with the ligand N-((5-hydroxy-4-oxo-4H-pyran-3-yl)methylene)-2-(p-tolylamino)acetohydrazide (H2L) have been prepared. FT-IR, 1H-NMR, electronic spectra, powder X-ray, and thermal behavior methods were applied to elucidate the structural composition of new compounds. Geometry optimization for all synthesized compounds was conducted using the Gaussian09 program via the DFT method, to obtain optimal structures and essential parameters. Moreover, the antibacterial and antitumor activity of the ligand and its complexes were studied, where the Cd(II) complex acquires probably the best antibacterial activity followed by the Ru(III) complex towards bacterial species than others when using ampicillin and gentamicin were used as standard drugs. The complexes exhibited interestingly antitumor potential against the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line. The cytotoxicity of the new complexes has been arranged to follow the order: Ru(III) complex > Cd(II) complex > Zr(IV) complex > V(IV) complex > ligand. Molecular docking was performed on the active site of ribosyltransferase and obtained good results. Structure-based molecular docking is used to identify a potential therapeutic inhibitor for NUDT5.

ABSTRACT

New Pb(II), Mn(II), Hg(II), and Zn(II) complexes, derived from 4-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-(2-(phenylamino)acetyl)thiosemicarbazone, were synthesized. The compounds with general formulas, [Pb(H2L)2(OAc)2]ETOH.H2O, [Mn(H2L)(HL)]Cl, [Hg2(H2L)(OH)SO4], and [Zn(H2L)(HL)]Cl, were characterized by physicochemical and theoretical studies. X-ray diffraction studies showed a decrease in the crystalline size of compounds that were exposed to gamma irradiation (γ-irradiation). Thermal studies of the synthesized complexes showed thermal stability of the Mn(II) and Pb(II) complexes after γ-irradiation compared to those before γ-irradiation, while no changes in the Zn(II) and Hg(II) complexes were observed. The optimized geometric structures of the ligand and metal complexes are discussed regarding density functional theory calculations (DFT). The antimicrobial activities of the ligand and metal complexes against several bacterial and fungal stains were screened before and after irradiation. The Hg(II) complex has shown excellent antibacterial activity before and after γ-irradiation. In vitro cytotoxicity screening of the ligand and the Mn(II) and Zn(II) complexes before and after γ-irradiation disclosed that both the ligand and Mn(II) complex exhibited higher activity against human liver (Hep-G2) than Zn(II). Molecular docking was performed on the active site of MK-2 and showed good results.

ABSTRACT

Brucellosis is a zoonosis that has a devastating impact on the economy and public health, particularly in the Middle East, including Egypt. This study aimed to define risk factors associated with brucellosis in humans and in their cattle in Fayoum governorate - Upper Egypt. Also, molecular genotyping of recovered Brucella isolates from human cases and their cattle to assess the potential cross-species transmission in the study region. Data were obtained via double matched case-control studies for brucellosis in humans (106 cases and 160 controls) and in their cattle (78 cattle cases and 105 cattle controls). The results of multivariate regression analysis revealed that predictors of human brucellosis were animal-related occupations (OR 2.1, P 0.02), previous infection in other household members (OR 3.2, P 0.007), eating home-made soft cheese (OR 2.3, P 0.03), and exposure to cattle abortions (OR 6.9, P < 0.001). For cattle, predictors of brucellosis were maturity ≥2 years of age (OR 2.9, P 0.01), ≥2 animals reared by the same household (OR 3.7-6.9, P ≤ 0.001), and recent abortion (OR 15.2, P 0.01). Twelve Brucella isolates were recovered from eight human cases (7.5%, 8/106) and four cattle cases (6.2%, 4/65). All isolates were B. melitensis biovar 3. Analysis of the IS711 gene sequence revealed complete homology (100%) between isolates. Six virulence genes were utilized for virutyping: virB (100%), omp25 (100%), amiC (100%), ure (91.7%), wbkA (91.7%), and bvfA (75%). Virutyping revealed four virutypes: V1 (lack bvfA, 16.7%), V2 (harbored all genes, 66.7%), V3 (lack wbkA, 8.3%), and V4 (lack wbkA and ure, 8.3%). Repetitive extragenic palindromic PCR (REP-PCR) typing revealed two REP types. Combined REP-PCR/virulence genotyping revealed five different genotypes (G1-G5) for the detected isolates and a unique genotype for the reference strain (G6, B. melitensis bv3 Ether). Human and cattle isolates from the same household had matched genotypes. In conclusion, there were widespread risk factors among the cases studied. Health education for high-risk groups is essential for disease prevention, and combined REP-PCR/virulence genotyping is a quick tool for traceability, particularly in developing countries endemic with brucellosis as Egypt.

Gastric (peptic) ulcer is a major gastrointestinal disorder with high morbidity and mortality. While several drugs have been used to treat gastric ulcers, such as proton pump inhibitor-based triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori eradication, but hey result in adverse side effects. Therefore, development of new alternative therapies is desirable. Many recent studies have shown that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) might have an enhancing effect on the ulcerated gastric mucosa. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of MSCs in the treatment of indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer, and to compare it with the normal ulcer autohealing. This work was performed on 36 adult male albino rats, divided into four groups: Group I (control group), Group II (ulcer group), Group III (autohealing group), and Group IV (stem cells-treated group). The histological changes of gastric mucosa were examined in sections stained with H&E using light microscope for expression of vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in immunohistochemical stained sections using image analyzer. The results from MSCs-treated group revealed restoration of the normal architecture of the gastric mucosa with comparison to the autohealing group which showed excessive granulation tissue and heavy cellular infiltration with disorganized architecture of the fundic mucosa. Immunohistochemical examination showed strong expression of both VEGF and PCNA in the MSCs-treated group. So it was concluded that MSCs accelerate gastric ulcer healing when injected intraperitoneally, compared to autohealing process which showed delayed healing.

INTRODUCTION: Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen, which can acquire new resistance genes. Infections by carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii (CRAB) in cancer patients cause high mortality. METHODS: CRAB isolates from cancer patients were screened for carbapenemase-encoding genes that belong to Ambler classes (A), (B), and (D), followed by genotypic characterization by enterobacterial-repetitive-Intergenic-consensus-polymerase chain reaction (ERIC-PCR) and multilocus-sequence-typing (MLST). RESULTS: A total of 94.1% of CRAB isolates co-harbored more than one carbapenemase-encoding gene. The genes blaNDM, blaOXA-23-like, and blaKPC showed the highest prevalence, with rates of 23 (67.7%), 19 (55.9%), and 17 (50%), respectively. ERIC-PCR revealed 19 patterns (grouped into 9 clusters). MLST analysis identified different sequence types (STs) (ST-268, ST-195, ST-1114, and ST-1632) that belong to the highly resistant easily spreadable International clone II (IC II). Genotype diversity indicated the dissemination of carbapenem-hydrolyzing, ß-lactamase-encoding genes among genetically unrelated isolates. We observed a high prevalence of metallo-ß-lactamase (MBL)-encoding genes (including the highly-resistant blaNDM gene that is capable of horizontal gene transfer) and of isolates harboring multiple carbapenemase-encoding genes from different classes. CONCLUSION: The findings are alarming and call for measures to prevent and control the spread of MBL-encoding genes among bacteria causing infections in cancer patients and other immunocompromised patient populations.

Emerging hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been sequentially reported in chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) treated with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs). Homeobox transcript antisense RNA (HOTAIR), an oncogene, has been reported to be associated with cancer. We investigated the predictive value of lnc-HOTAIR for HCC surveillance in chronic HCV patients following DAAs therapy. The expression levels of lnc-HOTAIR and ATG-7 genes were measured in 220 with chronic HCV, following a DAAs based therapy for 12 weeks, the patients were followed-up for attentive surveillance of HCC for 12 months after starting DAAs. In terms of lnc-HOTAIR, patients with HCC and high viral load had significantly higher median expression levels of HOTAIR of (68 vs. 24; p = .001) and (94 vs. 52; p = .001), respectively. Moreover, the median expression level of ATG-7 was higher in those who developed HCC (114 vs. 51; p = .001). The expression of lnc-HOTAIR and ATG-7 are significant predictors of the development of HCC in HCV-4 infected patients treated with DAAs, with a cut-off value of 37 and 86, respectively. The increased expression levels of lnc-HOTAIR more than 68 in HCC patients following DAAs were correlated with poorer disease outcomes compared to those with lower expression levels; however, ATG-7 expression levels more than 114 were correlated with worse overall survival but not the progression-free one. We suggest that high expression levels of lnc-HOTAIR could serve as a risk assessment biomarker for HCC before and during DAAs course therapy in Chronic HCV-4 patients, and should be rigorously taken into consideration before DAAs.

ABSTRACT

Novel optical properties in graded photonic super-crystals can be further explored if new types of graded photonic super-crystals are fabricated. In this paper, we report holographic fabrication of graded photonic super-crystal with eight graded lattice clusters surrounding the central non-gradient lattices through pixel-by-pixel phase engineering in a spatial light modulator. The prospect of applications of octagon graded photonic super-crystal in topological photonics is discussed through photonic band gap engineering and coupled ring resonators.

ABSTRACT

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major public health problem, having a high prevalence in Egypt. Leukemia and lymphoma have been associated with HCV infection. MicroRNA-155 (miR-155) has been reported to play a regulatory role in cancer, inflammation, and immune response to infection. The expression level of miR-155 in HCV viremic patients is controversial; although high miR-155 levels were demonstrated in HCV genotypes 1,2, and 3, low levels of miR-155 were detected in Egyptian patients with HCV genotype 4. Several studies have investigated the correlation between the levels of miRNA-155 and the replication of HCV, others have evaluated miRNA-155 as a prognostic biomarker in different types of cancer. No studies have investigated the impact of miRNA-155 knockdown on HCV pediatric patients associated with childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). We knocked-out the miR_155a in cultured polymorphonuclear cells (PBMCs) obtained from 60 children with ALL; 30 were associated with HCV-4 infection and 30 were HCV negative. The miR_155a, HCV viral load, and cell proliferation werre assessed in treated and untreated cells using TaqMan assay quantitative polymerase chain reaction. We found that miRNA-155 was significantly upregulated by seven folds in the HCV-4 associated ALL group; while being linked to high HCV viral load and leukemic burden, miR_155a knock-out can improve the disease outcome. We conclude that miR-155 is a critical miRNA that is considered a therapeutic target in pediatric HCV leukemic patients.

BACKGROUND: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most well-known sort of leukemia in children. In spite of favorable survival rates, some patients relapse and achieve a poor outcome. METHODS: We analyzed miR-125b and Bcl-2 expressions in pediatric patients with ALL and evaluated their clinical utility as molecular markers for the prediction of disease outcomes. RESULTS: Downregulation of miR-125b and increased Bcl-2 expression levels in pediatric patients with ALL were associated with poor prognosis at diagnosis. At day 28 of induction, miR-125b was significantly increased, whereas Bcl-2 was downregulated. Loss of miR-125b during diagnosis and its elevation after therapy are strongly correlated with short leukemia-free survival and worse survival. Moreover, the combination of miR-125b with Bcl-2 markers can clearly enhance the prediction of the disease outcome. Finally, a univariate analysis highlighted the independent prognostic value of miR-125 in a pediatric patient with ALL. CONCLUSIONS: miR-125b and Bcl-2 together are potent predictors for the prognosis and, therefore, can be used as therapeutic targets in childhood ALL.

BACKGROUND: Coronary tortuosity (CT) had different definitions and scores in literature with unclear pathophysiological impact. OBJECTIVES: To study degree of CT and it's relation to ischemic changes in patients with angina but normal coronary angiography (CA). METHODS: We conducted a prospective study at University hospitals between May 2016 and January 2017. We included 200 consecutive patients who underwent CA due to chest pain assumed to be of cardiac origin, and their CA was normal (no diameter stenosis >30%, nor myocardial bridging). Patients were prospectively divided into 2 groups based on the presence (n = 113) or absence (n = 87) of ischemic changes during stress study and compared for clinical, echocardiographic and CA characteristics. A newly proposed Tortuosity Severity Index (TSI) was developed into significant (mild/moderate CT with more than 4 curvatures in total, or severe/extreme CT with any number of curvatures) or not significant TSI (mild CT with curvatures less than or equal to 4 curvatures in total). RESULTS: Patients with ischemic changes had the highest rate of CT (76.5 vs 18%, p = 0.004) compared to those without. CT mostly affects the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery in mid and distal segments. Females, elderly, and hypertensives with left ventricular hypertrophy were strongly related to CT. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified CT with significant TSI as the only predictor of ischemic changes in these patients (OR = 6.2, CI = 2.5-15.3, P = <0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Coronary tortuosity is a strong predictor of anginal pain among patients with normal CA, despite positive stress study. This finding is more pronounced among elderly, hypertensive female patients.

Photonic quasi-crystals and photonic crystals with certain degrees of disorder can have a broadband light-matter interaction. In this paper, we present the holographic fabrication of graded photonic super-quasi-crystals through pixel-by-pixel phase pattern engineering using a spatial light modulator. Using the same phase pattern arranged in a decagon, we have fabricated graded photonic super-quasi-crystals with five-fold symmetry and multiple levels of gradients and graded photonic super-crystals with rectangular unit super-cells, depending on the Fourier filter. Although a certain degree of disorder was incorporated in the quasi-crystals, we still observed the golden ratio in the diameters of the diffraction rings of the fabricated quasi-crystals, indicating five-fold symmetry. Using direct pixel-by-pixel phase engineering, the same laser projection system, consisting of an integrated spatial light modulator and a reflective optical element, can be used for the fabrication of graded photonic super-crystals with various symmetries. The multi-level gradient effects on the optical properties of an organic light-emitting diode were simulated. When the cathode of an organic light-emitting device is patterned in the graded photonic super-crystals, a light extraction efficiency up to 76% in the visible range can be achieved.

Malnutrition is an increasing health problem among children in developing countries. We assessed the level of malnutrition and associated factors among school children in a rural setting in Fayoum Governorate, Egypt. A school based cross-sectional survey was conducted on children (6-17 years) in Manshit El Gamal village in Tamia district of Fayoum Governorate. Weight, height, and age data were used to calculate z-scores of the three nutritional indicators using WHO anthroPlus. Sociodemographics and lifestyles Data were collected. Prevalence of stunting, underweight, and wasting was 34.2%, 3.4%, and 0.9%, respectively, while obesity was 14.9%. Prevalence of obesity was significantly higher in younger age group of 6-9 years in comparison with older age and was higher in males versus females in 10-13-year-age group. Increasing age, reduced poultry consumption, and escaping breakfast were associated factors for stunting with OR (95% CI) 1.27 (1.17-1.37), 2.19 (1.4-3.4), and 2.3 (1.07-5.03). Younger age and regular employment of the father were factors associated with obesity (OR = 0.753; 0.688-0.824 and OR = 2.217; 1.4-3.5). Malnutrition is highly prevalent in Fayoum in line with the national prevalence and associated with age, gender, regularity of father's employment, and dietary factors.
