ABSTRACT
This prospective study describes the experience with a new dynamic external fixator which provides three degrees of freedom, while the centre of rotation of all these movements is located in the wrist. 44 patients with unstable fractures of the distal radius were included. During the period of dynamisation, with a median flexion of 30 degrees, extension of 18 degrees, radial deviation of 0 degree and ulnar deviation of 20 degrees the range of motion needed to perform activities of daily living was approached. In spite of early mobilisation reduction was maintained. The radiological result was excellent or good in 82% of the patients and the functional result was excellent or good in 92% of the cases. Pin track infections were noted rather frequently, possibly related to the interaction between the soft tissues and the fixator pins. Based on the experiences of the study the device needs further improvement.

Parathyroid cysts are a rare cause of space-occupying lesions in the mediastinum. Because symptoms are not specific, the diagnosis is seldom made before operation. Removal was done through a cervical incision without sternal splitting.

The Greater Paris area has 9.5 million population. About 400,000 are, to various extent, in a state of disability. Among the disabled, 17,000 have to move in wheel-chairs. Out of 100 disabled people, 58 suffer from walking difficulties, 20 from eye deficiency and 11 from ear deficiency. Help is mostly required for walking: 58 percent of the disabled population need such a help.

We report the long-term results of the Matti-Russe operation for pseudarthrosis of the scaphoid in 100 cases, reported previously by Mulder in 1968. Clinical results for 77 patients and radiographic data for 74 were reviewed at 22 to 34.8 years after surgery. In general, there was satisfactory relief of pain and stiffness but some patients had limitation of motion and reduced grip-strength, with usually slight osteoarthritic changes. There was poor correlation between subjective, objective, and radiographic results but 88% of the patients were satisfied with their results.
