ABSTRACT

This report highlights two cases of surgical site infections (SSIs) caused by Mycobacterium fortuitum (Mf) following abdominal mesh implantation. The first case involved an 83-year-old male experiencing non-healing erythema and wounds post-operation, which persisted despite multiple treatments, until effective management was achieved with targeted antibiotics after Mf identification. The second case concerned a female patient with a gynecological postoperative hernia, where Mf was quickly detected following SSI onset three weeks after surgery. Prompt mesh removal and appropriate antibiotic treatment led to a rapid and full recovery. These cases emphasize the importance of early detection and intervention in managing Mf infections effectively, illustrating how the timing of diagnosis can significantly influence treatment outcomes.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcomes of embryo transfer (ET) and to identify the parameters influencing pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: This study included 938 ET cycles involving single frozen and thawed good-quality blastocyst (Gardner grade ≥3BB) between August 2017 and January 2018. The significance of several parameters including endometrial thickness, position of the transferred air bubble, self-evaluation score by physicians, and uterus direction at ET as predictors of clinical pregnancy was evaluated using univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS: Among 938 ET cycles, 462 (49.3%) resulted in a clinical pregnancy. Endometrial thickness was positively associated with clinical pregnancy in a linear trend. Between the variable position of the transferred air bubble and clinical pregnancy rate showed a curvilinear relationship. Clinical pregnancy rate was higher in cases with good self-evaluation score, whereas there was no difference between groups with different uterus directions. Univariate analysis of predictive parameters identified endometrial thickness, self-evaluation score by physicians, and position of air bubbles as significant predictors of clinical pregnancy, of which endometrial thickness and position of air bubbles appeared to be independently related to clinical pregnancy. CONCLUSION: Endometrial thickness and the position of transferred air bubbles influenced clinical pregnancy in ET cycles.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the effects of a carbohydrate-restricted diet on aging, brain function, intestinal bacteria and the life span to determine long-term carbohydrate-restriction effects on the aging process in senescence-accelerated prone mice (SAMP8). Three-week-old male SAMP8 were divided into three groups after a week of preliminary feeding. One group was given a controlled diet, while the others fed on high-fat and carbohydrate-restricted diets, respectively. The mice in each group were further divided into two subgroups, of which one was the longevity measurement group. The other groups fed ad libitum until the mice were 50 weeks old. Before the test period termination, passive avoidance test evaluated the learning and memory abilities. Following the test period, serum and various mice organs were obtained and submitted for analysis. The carbohydrate-restricted diet group exhibited significant decrease in the survival rate as compared to the other two diet groups. The passive avoidance test revealed a remarkable decrease in the learning and memory ability of carbohydrate-restricted diet group as compared to the control-diet group. Measurement of lipid peroxide level in tissues displayed a marked increase in the brain and spleen of carbohydrate-restricted diet group than the control-diet and high-fat diet groups. Furthermore, notable serum IL-6 and IL-1ß level (inflammation indicators) elevations, decrease in Enterobacteria (with anti-inflammatory action), increase in inflammation-inducing Enterobacteria and lowering of short-chain fatty acids levels in cecum were observed in the carbohydrate-restricted diet group. Hence, carbohydrate-restricted diet was revealed to promote aging and shortening of life in SAMP8.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate anatomically the relationship between bone and muscles by detailed observation of the bone shape and the structure of muscles to facilitate an understanding of the function of the muscles involved in jaw movement. METHODS: 36 specimens of 24 Japanese cadavers were examined. The insertion areas were marked using a radiopaque marker and examined by micro-computed tomography. For morphological observation, we used 101 condylar processes. In addition, we made histological sections in some specimens to observe the detailed attachments of the muscle. RESULTS: Based on the micro-CT images and dissection findings, the lateral pterygoid muscle was found to be most frequently inserted into the anterior impression and attached to the medial impression of the process. According to the histological observations, the lateral pterygoid muscle mainly inserted to the condylar process. The micro-CT images indicated that the obvious bony ridge was lateral to the pterygoid fovea on the condylar process in all specimens. The midmedial muscle bundle of the temporalis was attached to the ridge. Based on the morphological observations, the ridge was situated on the lateral area of the condylar process. CONCLUSIONS: Since dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint is likely closely related to both the lateral pterygoid muscle and also the temporalis, further studies are necessary to evaluate the function of these muscles and consider jaw movement.
