ABSTRACT

The interaction between inflammatory processes and a hypercoagulant state may aggravate the severity of asthma and stimulate the airway remodeling of asthma. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the association between the negative inflammatory regulator tumor necrosis factor α induced protein-8 like-2 (TIPE2) and the coagulating substances tissue factor (TF) and thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) in patients with bronchial asthma. Compared with healthy controls, TIPE2 expression was significantly downregulated, whereas TF expression was upregulated in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with bronchial asthma. In addition, levels of TF and TSP-1 in the sera were up-regulated in patients with asthma compared with healthy controls. TIPE2 expression was negatively correlated with TF in the PBMCs and sera and was negatively correlated with TSP-1 levels in the sera of patients with bronchial asthma. The results of the current study indicated that anti-inflammatory TIPE2 levels are associated with levels of the coagulation substances TF and TSP-1. However, further studies are required to determine whether TIPE2 participates in the pathogenesis of asthma by interacting with the coagulation substances TF and TSP-1.

ABSTRACT

A total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has always been associated with moderate-to-severe pain. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs was performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of pain control of adductor canal block (ACB) and femoral nerve block (FNB) after TKA.Relevant literatures about the ACB and FNB after TKA for reducing pain were searched from Medline (1996-January, 2015), Embase (1980-January, 2015), PubMed (1980-January, 2015), Web of Science (1980-January, 2015), and The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. High-quality RCTs and non-RCTs were picked to evaluate the visual analogue scale (VAS) and other outcome. This systematic review and meta-analysis were performed according to the PRISMA statement criteria. The software RevMan 5.30 was used for the meta-analysis.Eight literatures fitted into the inclusion criteria. There were no significant differences in VAS score with rest or mobilization at 4, 24, and 48 h between ACB group and FNB group. There were also no significant differences in the strength of quadriceps and adductor, the length of hospital stay, and complications of vomiting and nausea.Present meta-analysis indicated that ACB shows no superiority than FNB group. Both of them can reduce the pain score after TKA. As referred to which method to adopt, it is determined by the preference of the surgeons and anesthesiologists.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To investigate the expressions of microRNA-20a (miR-20a) and let-7a in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and their diagnostic value. METHODS: Seventy patients with ESCC and 40 healthy subjects were enrolled to investigate the expression of miR-20a and let-7a using quantitative real-time PCR. The expression of miR-20a and let-7a was compared between ESCC patients and healthy subjects. The plasma levels of miR-20a and let-7a in relation to patient clinicopathologic parameters, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and the sensitivity and specificity of miR-20a and let-7a in ESCC diagnosis were analyzed. RESULTS: Plasma levels of miR-20a were significantly higher in ESCC patients than in healthy controls, and plasma levels of let-7 were lower in ESCC patients than in healthy controls (both P < 0.05). The area under the ROC curve of miR-20a was 0.767 (95%CI: 0.677-0.857; P < 0.001), when the cut-off value was set at 4.77, the sensitivity and specificity were 64.3% and 75.0%, respectively. The area under the ROC curve of let-7a was 0.829 (95%CI: 0.754-0.904; P < 0.001), when the cut-off value was set at 6.22, the sensitivity and specificity were 74.3% and 85.0%, respectively. Thus, the sensitivity and specificity of let-7a were higher than those of miR-20a. The median relative plasma expression of let-7a in clinical stage III/IV (0.24) was lower than that in stage I/II (0.42), while the expression of miR-20a according to stage was not statistically different. The expressions of miR-20a and let-7a were not related to gender, age, tumor diameter, tumor grade, or pathologic stage. CONCLUSION: Plasma miR-20a and let-7a levels are significantly altered in patients with ESCC and can be used as potential biomarkers in the diagnosis of ESCC.

ABSTRACT

This work presents a self-consistent thermodynamic approach to nonequilibrium solvation energy. By imposing an extra electric field onto the nonequilibrium solvation system, a constrained equilibrium state is prepared. New expressions of nonequilibrium solvation energy and solvent reorganization energy have been formulated. The numerical algorithm combining the new formulation with the dielectric polarizable continuum model has been implemented. As an application, self-exchange electron transfer (ET) reactions between tetramethylhydrazine, tetraethylhydrazine, and tetrapropylhydrazine and their corresponding radical cations have been investigated. The inner and solvent reorganization energies are calculated by the "four-point" method and the new method for nonequilibrium solvation, respectively. Besides, we also calculated the electronic coupling matrix. The rate constants for the three self-exchange ET reactions correlate well with experimental results. We have shown that the inner reorganization energies of these self-exchange ET are not very sensitive to compound size while the compound size has some effect on the solvent reorganization energy in acetonitrile. The new method for nonequilibrium solvation energy based on continuum model provides a reasonable result for the solvent reorganization energy.

ABSTRACT

In this work, the constrained equilibrium principle is introduced and applied to the derivations of the nonequilibrium solvation free energy and solvent reorganization energy in the process of removing the hydrated electron. Within the framework of the continuum model, a modified expression of the vertical detachment energy (VDE) of a hydrated electron in water is formulated. Making use of the approximation of spherical cavity and point charge, the variation tendency of VDE accompanying the size increase of the water cluster has been inspected. Discussions comparing the present form of the VDE and the traditional one and the influence of the cavity radius in either the fixed pattern or the varying pattern on the VDE have been made.
