ABSTRACT

Herein, a dual-emission Eu metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF) is prepared and used as the ratiometric fluorescence probe for ultrasensitive detection of aminoglycoside antibiotics (AGs). Due to the strong hydrogen bond interactions between AGs and Eu-MOF, the blue emission is enhanced while the red emission has little fluctuation in Eu-MOF with the addition of AGs, thus a good linear relationship with the logarithm of AGs concentrations from 0.001 to 100 µg/mL can be established for quantitative analysis. Good sensitivity with the detection limit of 0.33 ng/mL for apramycin, 0.32 ng/mL for amikacin and 0.30 ng/mL for kanamycin is achieved. The proposed assay demonstrates good selectivity and applicability for determination of AGs in real milk and honey samples. The Eu-MOF materials are further fabricated as fluorescent test papers for facile visual detection. The as-established ratio fluorescence platform offers a portable and economical way for rapid monitoring AGs residues in complex food samples.

ABSTRACT

The chemical weathering process of carbonate rocks consumes a large quantity of CO2. This has great potential as a carbon sink, and it is one of a significant pathway for achieving carbon neutrality. However, the control mechanisms of karst carbon sink fluxes are unclear, and there is a lack of effective and accurate accounting. We took the Puding Shawan karst watercarbon cycle test site in China, which has identical initial conditions but different land use types, as the research subject. We used controlled experiments over six years to evaluate the mechanisms for the differences in hydrology, water chemistry, concentrations and fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). We found that the transition from rock to bare soil to grassland led to increases in the DIC concentration by 0.08-0.62 mmol⋅L-1. The inorganic carbon sink flux (CSF) increased by 3.01-5.26 t⋅C⋅km-2⋅a-1, an increase amplitude of 30-70 %. The flux of dissolved organic carbon (FDOC) increase by 0.28 to 0.52 t⋅C⋅km-2⋅a-1, an increase amplitude of 34-90 %. We also assessed the contribution of land use modifications to regional carbon neutrality, it indicate that positive land use modification can significantly regulate the karst carbon sink, with grassland having the greatest carbon sequestration ability. Moreover, in addition to DOC from soil organic matter degradation, DOC production by chemoautotrophic microorganisms utilizing DIC in groundwater may also be a potential source. Thus, coupled studies of the conversion of DIC to DOC processes in groundwater are an important step in assessing karst carbon sink fluxes.

ABSTRACT

As an important component of inland water, the primary factors affecting the carbon cycle in karst river-lake systems require further investigation. In particular, the impacts of climatic factors and the biological carbon pump (BCP) on carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange fluxes in karst rivers and lakes deserve considerable attention. Using quarterly sampling, field monitoring, and meteorological data collection, the spatiotemporal characteristics of CO2 exchange fluxes in Erhai Lake (a typical karst lake in Yunnan, SW China) and its inflow rivers were investigated and the primary influencing factors were analyzed. The average river CO2 exchange flux reached 346.80 mg m-2 h-1, compared to -6.93 mg m-2 h-1 for the lake. The carbon cycle in rivers was strongly influenced by land use within the basin; cultivated and construction land were the main contributors to organic carbon (OC) in the river (r = 0.66, p < 0.01) and the mineralization of OC was a major factor in CO2 oversaturation in most rivers (r = 0.76, p < 0.01). In addition, the BCP effect of aquatic plants and the high pH in karst river-lake systems enhance the ability of water body to absorb CO2, resulting in undersaturated CO2 levels in the lake. Notably, under rainfall regulation, riverine OC and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) flux inputs controlled the level of CO2 exchange fluxes in the lake (rOC = 0.78, p < 0.05; rDIC = 0.97, p < 0.01). We speculate that under future climate and human activity scenarios, the DIC and OC input from rivers may alleviate the CO2 limitation of BCP effects in karst eutrophication lakes, possibly enabling aquatic plants to convert more CO2 into OC for burial. The results of this research can help advance our understanding of CO2 emissions and absorption mechanisms in karst river-lake systems.

ABSTRACT

ZnO-CeO2 hollow nanospheres have been successfully synthesized via the hard templating method, in which CeO2 is used as the support skeleton to avoid ZnO agglomeration. The synthesized ZnO-CeO2 hollow nanospheres possess a large electrochemically active area and high electron transfer owing to the high specific surface area and synergistic effect of ZnO and CeO2. Due to the above advantages, the resulting ZnO-CeO2 hollow spheres display high sensitivities of 1122.86 µA mM-1 cm-2 and 908.53 µA mM-1 cm-2 under a neutral environment for the selective detection of dopamine and uric acid. The constructed electrochemical sensor shows excellent selectivity, stability and recovery for the selective analysis of dopamine and uric acid in actual samples. This study provides a valuable strategy for the synthesis of ZnO-CeO2 hollow nanospheres via the hard templating method as electrocatalysts for the selective detection of dopamine and uric acid.

ABSTRACT

To enhance deep learning-based automated interictal epileptiform discharge (IED) detection, this study proposes a multimodal method, vEpiNet, that leverages video and electroencephalogram (EEG) data. Datasets comprise 24 931 IED (from 484 patients) and 166 094 non-IED 4-second video-EEG segments. The video data is processed by the proposed patient detection method, with frame difference and Simple Keypoints (SKPS) capturing patients' movements. EEG data is processed with EfficientNetV2. The video and EEG features are fused via a multilayer perceptron. We developed a comparative model, termed nEpiNet, to test the effectiveness of the video feature in vEpiNet. The 10-fold cross-validation was used for testing. The 10-fold cross-validation showed high areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) in both models, with a slightly superior AUROC (0.9902) in vEpiNet compared to nEpiNet (0.9878). Moreover, to test the model performance in real-world scenarios, we set a prospective test dataset, containing 215 h of raw video-EEG data from 50 patients. The result shows that the vEpiNet achieves an area under the precision-recall curve (AUPRC) of 0.8623, surpassing nEpiNet's 0.8316. Incorporating video data raises precision from 70% (95% CI, 69.8%-70.2%) to 76.6% (95% CI, 74.9%-78.2%) at 80% sensitivity and reduces false positives by nearly a third, with vEpiNet processing one-hour video-EEG data in 5.7 min on average. Our findings indicate that video data can significantly improve the performance and precision of IED detection, especially in prospective real clinic testing. It suggests that vEpiNet is a clinically viable and effective tool for IED analysis in real-world applications.

ABSTRACT

Amphiphilic materials can be used for sample preparation of chromatography or mass spectrometry. Amphiphilic materials with magnetic properties in combination with magnetic suction devices allow for automated sample preparation. However, conventional synthesis methods are cumbersome and not suitable for the mass production of the material. In this study, a micro-suspension polymerization method was developed to synthesize magnetic amphiphilic resin microspheres (MARMs), providing new ideas for the preparation of amphiphilic microspheres. MARMs with particle sizes ranging from 3 to 6 µm were successfully prepared, with BET surface area up to 653.2 m2/g. A magnetic solid-phase extraction method based on MARM-5 was developed for the extraction of four glucocorticoids including Cortisone, Hydrocortisone, Cortodoxone, and Corticosterone. This method had a very short adsorption time of 0.5 min and a total extraction time of only 13 min. The limit of detection for the four glucocorticoids ranged from 0.22 to 0.82 ng/L. There was a good linear relationship between sample concentration and peak area in the range of 25∼500 ng/L. Relative recovery of 98 %∼108 % and internal standard normalized matrix effect factors of 95∼114 % were obtained, and the relative standard deviation was between 2.3 % and 6.3 %. The MARMs would be used as excellent solid extraction material for glucocorticoids.

ABSTRACT

Our prophase studies have manifested that the sweet triterpenoid glycoside from the leaves of Cyclocarya paliurus (CPST) effectively improved the disorders of glucolipid metabolism in vitro and in patients. The current purpose was to further detect its mechanisms involved. The results demonstrated that CPST could ameliorate high-fat diet (HFD)-induced insulin resistance (IR), which was linked to reducing HFD-induced mice's body weight, serum glucose (GLUO), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (T-CHO) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), lowering the area under the oral glucose tolerance curve and insulin tolerance, elevating the percentage of brown adipose, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), reducing fat droplets of adipocytes in interscapular brown adipose tissue (iBAT) and cross-sectional area of adipocytes. Further studies manifested that CPST obviously downregulated TLR4, MyD88, NLRP3, ASC, caspase-1, cleased-caspase-1, IL-18, IL-1ß, TXNIP, and GSDMD protein expressions and p-NF-кB/NF-кB ratio in iBAT. These aforementioned findings demonstrated that CPST ameliorated HFD induced IR by regulating TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway, which in turn enhancing insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.

ABSTRACT

Paper-based ratiometric fluorescence sensors are normally prepared using two or more types of fluorescent materials on a paper chip for simple, low-cost and fast detection. However, the choice of multi-step and one-step modifications on the paper chip affects the analytical performance. Herein, a novel paper-based dual-emission ratiometric fluorescence sensor was designed for the selective detection of tetracycline (TC). Carbon dots (CDs) modified with Eu3+ were combined with a sealed paper-based microfluidic chip by two methods: one-step grafting of CDs-Eu3+ on paper and step-by-step grafting of CDs and Eu3+ on paper. The analytical performance was studied and optimized respectively. The red fluorescence of Eu3+ at 450 nm is enhanced and the blue fluorescence of CDs at 617 nm is quenched by energy transfer in the presence of TC. Under optimal conditions, TC is selectively determined in the linear range from 0.1 µM to 100 µM with a detection limit of 0.03 µM by the step-by-step grafting method. In addition, the sealed paper chip could effectively prevent pollution and volatilization from the reagent. This technique has been used to analyze TC in seafood aquaculture water with satisfactory results.

ABSTRACT

Arsenic (As) has been widely detected in surface media on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP); however, the differences in the As distribution and partitioning characteristics between freshwater and saltwater lakes remain poorly understood. To determine the distribution and partitioning characteristics of As, multimedia environmental samples were collected from a typical small watershed consisting of a river, wetland, and both freshwater and saltwater lakes on the QTP. Results showed that freshwater systems, represented by Hurleg Lake, were high in particulate arsenic (PAs) and low in dissolved arsenic (DAs), whereas the saltwater system represented by Tosen Lake, exhibited the reverse distribution. This discrepancy in As distribution was primarily attributed to evaporation enrichment, competitive adsorption of HCO3- and pH variations, as suggested by correlation analysis and stable isotopic composition of water. In the stratified Tosen Lake, an increasing trend of DAs in the water column was observed, potentially driven by the reductive dissolution of Fe (hydr)oxides and bacterial sulfate reduction in the anoxic bottom hypolimnion. Conversely, Hurleg Lake maintained oxic conditions with stable DAs concentrations. Notably, PAs was elevated in the bottom layer of both lakes, possibly due to uptake/adsorption by biogenic particles, as indicated by high levels of chl.α and suspended particulate matter. These findings offer insights into the potential future impact of climate change on As mobilization/redistribution in arid plateau lakes, with implications for management policies that regulate As pollution.

ABSTRACT

Hybrid pairing of the corresponding silkworm species is a pivotal link in sericulture, ensuring egg quality and directly influencing silk quantity and quality. Considering the potential of image recognition and the impact of varying pupal postures, this study used machine learning and deep learning for global modeling to identify pupae species and sex separately or simultaneously. The performance of traditional feature-based approaches, deep learning feature-based approaches, and their fusion approaches were compared. First, 3600 images of the back, abdomen, and side postures of 5 species of male and female pupae were captured. Next, six traditional descriptors, including the histogram of oriented gradients (HOG), and six deep learning descriptors, including ConvNeXt-S, were utilized to extract significant species and sex features. Finally, classification models were constructed using the multilayer perceptron (MLP), support vector machine, and random forest. The results indicate that the {HOG + ConvNeXt-S + MLP} model excelled, achieving 99.09% accuracy for separate species and sex recognition and 98.40% for simultaneous recognition, with precision-recall and receiver operating characteristic curves ranging from 0.984 to 1.0 and 0.996 to 1.0, respectively. In conclusion, it can capture subtle distinctions between pupal species and sexes and shows promise for extensive application in sericulture.

ABSTRACT

Fetal growth restriction (FGR), a common obstetric complication, significantly increases the risks of fetal intrauterine death and neonatal death, and fetuses with growth restriction are prone to cognitive retardation and various diseases in adulthood. The early determination of FGR risk is contentious in clinical research, and few indicators are available for the early prediction and diagnosis of FGR. This review focuses on the prediction and diagnosis of FGR, as well as the significance of biomarkers for FGR, such as those related to gene regulation, apoptosis, mitochondrial function, and inflammation. Although many of these biomarkers are still in the early stages of research, they are good predictors of the threats to fetal health and safety, and they provide new insights for the treatment of FGR.

ABSTRACT

Ion-conducting membranes (ICMs) with high selectivity are important components in redox flow batteries. However it is still a challenge to break the trade-off between ion conductivity and ion selectivity, which can be resolved by the regulation of their nanostructures. Here, polyoxometalate (POM)-hybridized block copolymers (BCPs) are used as self-assembled additives to construct proton-selective nanobarriers in the ICM matrix to improve the microscopic structures and macroscopic properties of ICMs. Benefiting from the co-assembly behavior of BCPs and POMs and their cooperative noncovalent interactions with the polymer matrix, ∼50 nm ellipsoidal functional nanoassemblies with hydrophobic vanadium-shielding cores and hydrophilic proton-conducting shells are constructed in the sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) matrix, which leads to an overall enhancement of proton conductivity, proton selectivity, and cell performance. These results present a self-assembly route to construct functional nanostructures for the modification of polymer electrolyte membranes toward emerging energy technologies.

ABSTRACT

Cyclocarya paliurus (Batalin) Iljinskaja (C. paliurus) is a single species of Cyclocarya paliurus in Juglandaceae. It is a unique rare medicinal plant resource in China that is mainly distributed in the south of China. The leaves of C. paliurus, as a new food ingredient, are processed into tea products in daily life. Triterpenoids are the main active ingredient in C. paliurus. So far, 164 triterpenoid compounds have been isolated and identified from C. paliurus, which are included 3,4-seco-dammaranes, dammaranes, oleanane, ursane, lupinanes, taraxeranes, and norceanothanes. Modern pharmacological studies manifested that these ingredients have a wide range of pharmacological activities both in vitro and in vivo, such as reducing blood sugar, lowering blood lipids, and anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and other activities. In addition, current results indicate that the pharmacological mechanisms of triterpenoids were closely related to their chemical structure, molecular signaling pathways, and the expression of related proteins. In order to further study C. paliurus based on the current research situation, this review summarizes the prospect and systematic summary of the triterpenes of C. paliurus from the aspects of structural characteristics, quality control, biological activity, and the structure-activity relationship, which provide a reference for further research and application of the triterpenoids from C. paliurus in the field of functional food and medicine.

ABSTRACT

Target pests of genetically engineered crops producing both defensive allelochemicals and Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxins often sequentially or simultaneously uptake allelochemicals, Bt toxins, and/or insecticides. How the three types of toxins interact to kill pests remains underexplored. Here we investigated the interactions of Bt toxin Vip3A, plant allelochemical flavone, and insecticide emamectin benzoate in Spodoptera frugiperda. Simultaneous administration of flavone LC25 + Vip3A LC25, emamectin benzoate LC25 + Vip3A LC25, and flavone LC15 + emamectin benzoate LC15 + Vip3A LC15 but not flavone LC25 + emamectin LC25 yielded a mortality significantly higher than their expected additive mortality (EAM). One-day pre-exposure to one toxin at LC5 followed by six-day exposure to the same toxin at LC5 plus another toxin at LC50 showed that the mortality of flavone LC5 + Vip3A LC50, emamectin benzoate LC5 + Vip3A LC50, and Vip3A LC5 + emamectin benzoate LC50 were significantly higher than their EAM, while that of flavone LC5 + emamectin benzoate LC50 was significantly lower than their EAM. No significant difference existed among the mortalities of Vip3A LC5 + flavone LC50, emamectin benzoate LC5 + flavone LC50, and their EAMs. The results suggest that the interactions of the three toxins are largely synergistic (inductive) or additive, depending on their combinations and doses.

ABSTRACT

The eutrophication of lakes is a global environmental problem. Regulating nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) on phytoplankton is considered to be the most important basis of lake eutrophication management. Therefore, the effects of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) on phytoplankton and its role in mitigating lake eutrophication have often been overlooked. In this study, the relationships between phytoplankton and DIC concentrations, carbon isotopic composition, nutrients (N and P), and hydrochemistry in the Erhai Lake (a karst lake) were investigated. The results showed that when the dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2(aq)) concentrations in the water were higher than 15 µmol/L, the productivity of phytoplankton was controlled by the concentrations of TP and TN, especially by that of TP. When the N and P were sufficient and the CO2(aq) concentrations were lower than 15 µmol/L, the phytoplankton productivity was controlled by the concentrations of TP and DIC, especially by that of DIC. Additionally, DIC significantly affected the composition of the phytoplankton community in the lake (p<0.05). When the CO2(aq) concentrations were higher than 15 µmol/L, the relative abundance of Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta was much higher than those of harmful Cyanophyta. Thus, high concentrations of CO2(aq) can inhibit harmful Cyanophyta blooms. During lake eutrophication, when controlling N and P, an appropriate increase in CO2(aq) concentrations by land-use changes or pumping of industrial CO2 into water may reduce the proportion of harmful Cyanophyta and promote the growth of Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta, which may provide effectively assist in mitigating water quality deterioration in surface waters.

ABSTRACT

Flexible electrolytes with solid self-supporting properties are highly desired in the fields of energy and electronics. However, traditional flexible electrolytes prepared by doping ionic liquids or salt solutions into a polymer matrix pose a risk of liquid component leakage during device operation. In this work, the development of supramolecular ionic network electrolytes using polyoxometalate nanoclusters as supramolecular crosslinkers to solidify bola-type zwitterionic liquids is reported. The resulting self-supporting electrolytes possess semi-solid features and show a high proton conductivity of 8.2 × 10-4 S cm-1 at low humidity (RH = 30%). Additionally, the electrolytes exhibit a typical plateau region in rheological tests, indicating that their dynamic network structures can contribute mechanical behavior similar to the entangled networks in covalent polymer materials. This work introduces a new paradigm for designing flexible solid electrolytes and expands the concept of reticular chemistry to noncrystalline systems.

ABSTRACT

In this study, a method for ultrasensitive sensing of Fe2+ based on Fenton reaction mediated etching of triangular gold nanoplates (Au NPLs) was developed. In this assay, the etching of Au NPLs by H2O2 was accelerated in the presence of Fe2+ due to the generation of superoxide free radical (O2·-) via Fenton reaction. With the concentration of Fe2+ increased, the shape of Au NPLs changed from triangular to sphere with the blue shifted localized surface plasmon resonance, accompanying a series of consecutive color changes from blue, bluish purple, purple, reddish purple and finally to pink. The rich color variations enable rapid visual quantitative determination of Fe2+ within 10 min. A good linear relationship between the peak shifts and the concentration of Fe2+ was obtained in the range of 0.035 to 1.5 µM (R2 = 0.996). Favorable sensitivity and selectivity in the presence of other tested metal ions were achieved in the proposed colorimetric assay. The detection limits (3Æ¡/k) for Fe2+ was 26 nM by UV-vis spectroscopy, and the clearly discernible concentration of Fe2+ was as low as 0.07 µM by naked eyes. The recoveries of fortified samples in pond water and serum samples ranged from 96% to 106% with interday relative standard deviations <3.6% in all cases, demonstrating the applicability of the assay for measuring Fe2+ in real samples.

ABSTRACT

Ultrasonically-induced nanoemulsions have been widely investigated for the development of functional food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals due to ideal droplet sizes (DS), low polydispersity index (PDI), and superior physical stability. However, a series of frequently-used ultrasonic set-ups mainly suffered from a low ultrasonic energy efficiency caused by the large acoustic impedance and energy consumption, subordinately confronted with a low throughput, complicated fabrication with complex structure and weak ultrasonic cavitation. Herein, we employed a typical ultrasonic microreactor (USMR) that ensured the high-efficient energy input and generated intense cavitation behavior for efficient breakage of droplets and continuous production of unified oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsions in a single cycle and without any pre-emulsification treatment. The emulsification was optimized by tuning the formula indexes, technological parameters, and numerical analysis using Response Surface Methodology (RSM), followed by a comparison with the emulsification by a traditional ultrasonic probe. The USMR exhibited superior emulsification efficiency and easy scale-up with remarkable uniformity by series mode. In addition, concurrent and uniform nanoemulsions with high throughput could also be achieved by a larger USMR with high ultrasonic power. Based on RSM analysis, uniform DS and PDI of 96.4 nm and 0.195 were observed under the optimal conditions, respectively, well consistent with the predicted values. Impressively, the optimal nanoemulsions have a uniform spherical morphology and exhibited superior stability, which held well in 45 days at 4℃ and 25℃. The results in the present work may provide a typical paradigm for the preparation of functional nanomaterials based on the novel and efficient emulsification tools.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study explores the factors influencing the construction duration of public health emergency medical facilities and the ways in which they can be enhanced. Methods: Combining 30 relevant emergency medical facility construction cases in different cities in China from 2020 to 2021, seven condition variables and an outcome variable were selected, and necessary and sufficient condition analyses of duration influence factors were conducted using the fsQCA method. Results: The consistency of seven condition variables was <0.9, which shows that the construction period of public health emergency medical facilities is not independently affected by a single condition variable but by multiple influencing factors. The solution consistency value of the path configurations was 0.905, indicating that four path configurations were sufficient for the outcome variables. The solution coverage of the four path configurations was 0.637, indicating that they covered ~63.7% of the public health emergency medical facility cases. Conclusion: To reduce the construction duration, the construction of emergency medical facilities should focus on planning and design, the selection of an appropriate form of construction, the reasonable deployment of resources, and the vigorous adoption of information technology.
