ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Tension-free inguinal mesh-plug hernioplasty is well established. However, femoral hernia repair remains challenging and controversial. We aimed to evaluate a preperitoneal approach of tension-free hernioplasty for femoral hernia upon the anatomy rationality. METHODS: A prospective study of 62 patients between October 1999 and June 2011 received femoral hernioplasty in our hospital. This repair method involved a preperitoneal approach accomplished under regional or local anesthesia with mesh and plug; the emphasis was put on fulfilling the abdominal defect, i.e., the myopectineal orifice, with the plug flattened like an "umbrella", above the femoral ring but not to fill the femoral ring. RESULTS: All cases receiving preperitoneal tension-free hernioplasty had a smooth recovery. There were no severe complications, and no recurrences were detected within a 0.5- to 4-year follow-up. No specific restrictions with regard to activity were placed on the patients after surgery. All cases were able to return to normal life, including work, within 2 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: The preperitoneal tension-free hernioplasty may be a more effective method of femoral hernia repair; meanwhile, we must re-understand the anatomy of femoral hernia correctly so as to restore the anatomic and physiologic functions at this region optimally.

ABSTRACT

The objective of the present survey was to reveal the prevalence of helminths in adult goats in Hunan Province, the People's Republic of China. From July 2010 through February 2013, a total of 479 goats slaughtered in local abattoirs and markets were examined for the presence of helminths using a helminthological approach. Eighty-six percent of the examined goats were infected with at least one species of helminths. In total, 15 genera of helminths were found representing 2 phyla, 3 classes, 5 orders, and 11 families. Oesophago-stomum, Ostertagia and Haemonchus were the most prevailing nematode genera, Eurytrema was the predominant trematode genus detected, whereas the infection of adult goats with cestodes was not common, with Cysticercus tenuicollis being the most common genus. The worm burdens showed obvious seasonal variation in that nematodes and cestodes were abundant in summer and winter, and the trematodes peaked in winter, which was consistent with the seasonal precipitation of Hunan Province. The geographical distribution of helminths in goats ascended with altitude. Goats in the mountainous areas were more severely infected with helminths than goats in the hilly areas, whereas infection of goats with helminths was much less in the lake areas. The present investigation highlights the high prevalence of helminths in adult goats in Hunan Province, China, which provides baseline data for assessing the effectiveness of future prevention and controlling measures against helminth infection in adult goats in this province and elsewhere.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS NEW AND OBJECTIVE: Some evidence suggests that angiotensin-converting enzyme insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism may play a role in endothelium-dependent vasodilatation. However, the impact of I/D polymorphism on endogenous nitric oxide production, which may be of great therapeutic significance, has scarcely been studied. This study aimed to investigate this in hypertensives and hypercholesterolaemics. METHODS: Adult Han subjects were recruited by cluster sampling from two communities in Shunde, Guangdong province, China. Plasma nitrite and nitrate (NO(x)) levels were determined by colorimetry assay and angiotensin II and 6-keto-prostaglandin F1-alpha by radioimmunoassay. Angiotensin-converting enzyme gene I/D polymorphism were genotyped by polymer chain reaction-amplified fragment length polymorphism. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Of the 779 subjects who met our inclusion criteria, 502 were with normotensive and normocholesterolaemic, 76 had hypertension only, 146 hypercholesterolaemia only, and 55 had both hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia. Among subjects with hypertension only, the plasma levels of NO(x) for genotype DD were significantly lower than those for genotype II (P = 0·034). And the plasma levels of NO(x) for genotype DD was significantly higher than those for genotype II (P = 0·040) in subjects with hypercholesterolaemia only. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that I/D polymorphism has an impact on in vivo NO production in hypertensives and hypercholesterolaemics at the population level. Hypertensives with allele D may be benefit from L-arginine supplementation and hypercholesterolaemics with allele D may respond better to statins or antioxidants.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of helminths in adult dogs was investigated in Hunan Province, the People's Republic of China between June 2006 and December 2007. A total of 438 adult farm dogs slaughtered in local abattoirs from 9 representative administrative regions in Hunan Province were examined for the presence of helminths using a helminthological approach. All collected worms were counted and identified to species according to existing keys and descriptions. A total of 11 helminth species were found in the dogs, and they represented 2 phyla, 3 classes, 6 families and 8 genera. All dogs were infected by more than one helminth species. Clonorchis sinensis (29.4%) was the only trematode species found, Dipylidium caninum (42.3%) was the most common cestode species, and Toxocara canis (45.2%) the most common nematode species. 6 of the 11 dog helminths are also transmissible to humans (i.e., zoonotic), and can cause severe clinical human diseases, posing significant public health threats. The results of the present investigation have implications for the ongoing control of helminth infections in dogs and humans in Hunan Province, China.

ABSTRACT

We detect the expression of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in 104 specimens of gastric cancer by avidin biotin-peroxides complex technique (ABC). The positive rates of EGF, EGFR and synchronous EGF and EGFR were 35.6%, 42.3%, 30.8% respectively. The positive expression of EGF and EGFR to gastric cancer tissue was inclined to occur in patients who were in advanced stages, of poorly-differentiated types, Borrmann III, IV types, scirrhous type, seroinvasive type or lymph node metastasic types. The survival rates at 1, 3, 5 years after gastrectomy in the patients with expression of EGF were significantly lower than the survival rates of the patients with negative expression (P < 0.05). The patients with synchronous expression of EGF and EGFR had the worst prognosis. After gastrectomy, all of them died within 4 years. It is indicated that EGF and EGFR could serve as biological indicators of gastric cancer malignancy and an index for evaluating, the prognosis of the patients with gastric cancer.

ABSTRACT

In this study the molecular formula and structure of lipid constituents of silver carp and bighead carp in middle reaches of Yangtze River were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The position of double bounds was identified by the method of double bounds chemical localization. These carps are proved to contain eicosapantaenoic acid (EPA) and decosahexenoic acid (DHA). The contents of EPA and DHA, which were determined by gas chromatography, in silver carp and bighead carp were approximately the same as in tuna and salmon. The contents of EPA and DHA in 100 g wet sample were 0.187 g, 0.229 g and 0.246 g, 0.325 g respectively, but the cholesterol contents in silver carp and bighead carp were much lower than in tuna and salmon.

ABSTRACT

By means of whole blood chemiluminescence, phagocytic function of leucocytes (PFL) and the opsonic activity of plasma (OAP) were examined in 27 patients to observe the effect of splenectomy on phagocytic function of leucocytes. It was found that, the PFL of splenectomized patients was significantly lower than that of healthy persons and patients with cholecystectomy. It was then believed that the impaired immunological function against infection in splenectomized patients was related to the abnormal PFL resulting from the disappearance of tuftsin in the circulation, an important leucocytic activator produced only in the spleen. It was showed in this paper that the whole blood chemiluminescence is a simple, rapid and useful method in detecting PFL and OAP.
