ABSTRACT

Reasonable regulation of the micro-morphology of material can significantly enhance the related performance. Herein, bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6, simplified as BWO) porous hollow spheres with flower-like surface were prepared successfully, and this unique morphology endowed BWO with improved photocatalytic performance by reflecting and absorbing the light multiple times inside the cavity. To inhibit the rapid recombination of photogenerated e--h+ pairs within BWO itself, black phosphorous quantum dots (BPQDs) were anchored onto the nanosheets of BWO sphere closely by a facile self-assembly process, which will not shade the pores of BWO owing to the small size of BPQDs, but the BP nanosheets have the chance to do that. The band gap of BPQDs expanded much after exfoliation due to the quantum confinement effects, which matched the energy band of BWO well to form S-scheme heterojunction, achieving more efficient separation of photogenerated charges. As a result, the BPQDs/BWO exhibited attractive photocatalytic performance in the degradation of amoxicillin (AMX) and other antibiotics. Besides, the operation conditions were optimized, specifically, 94.5 % of AMX (20 mg/L, 200 mL) can be removed in 60 min when 50 mg of 2BPQDs/BWO was used as catalyst with solution pH = 11. Moreover, a possible degradation pathway of AMX was proposed based on the detected intermediates.

ABSTRACT

Intelligent single-layer packaging is widely used in food monitoring and storage. However, most single-layer intelligent packaging has poor mechanical strength and water barrier properties. In this study, a bilayer intelligent detector film based on polyvinyl alcohol-chitosan (PVA-CS)/nano-ZnO/sodium alginate (SA) combined with anthocyanin extract (cyanidin chloride) was prepared using a layer-by-layer solution casting assembly technique. The effects of different levels of anthocyanin extracts on the physical and functional properties of the films, including microstructure, mechanical property, barrier property, pH sensitivity, and antibacterial property, were investigated. The results show that the bilayers exhibit excellent physical properties, lower water vapor permeability, better light transmission and UV-blocking properties, a broader pH sensitivity (ΔE > 10), and good antibacterial activity. In short, the bilayer films studied are superior to the single-layer films in terms of their packaging potential for products with low moisture content, offering new directions for active intelligent packaging and biodegradable materials for the food industry.

ABSTRACT

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common metabolic syndrome. Imbalances between liver lipid output and input are the direct causes of NAFLD, and hepatic steatosis is the pathological premise and basis for NAFLD progression. Mutual interaction between endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and oxidative stress play important roles in NAFLD pathogenesis. Notably, mitochondria-associated membranes (MAMs) act as a structural bridges for functional clustering of molecules, particularly for Ca2+, lipids, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) exchange. Previous studies have examined the crucial roles of ERS and ROS in NAFLD and have shown that MAM structural and functional integrity determines normal ER- mitochondria communication. Upon disruption of MAM integrity, miscommunication directly or indirectly causes imbalances in Ca2+ homeostasis and increases ERS and oxidative stress. Here, we emphasize the involvement of MAMs in glucose and lipid metabolism, chronic inflammation and insulin resistance in NAFLD and summarize MAM-targeting drugs and compounds, most of which achieve their therapeutic or ameliorative effects on NAFLD by improving MAM integrity. Therefore, targeting MAMs may be a viable strategy for NAFLD treatment. This review provides new ideas and key points for basic NAFLD research and drug development centred on mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum.

ABSTRACT

Many anti-obesity chemicals have been withdrawn from the market due to serious adverse reactions, and the researchers have turned their attention to low-toxic natural products. Previous studies have demonstrated that chitosan (CTS) and chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) were low-toxic natural products for the use of weight loss. However, it is still unclear whether CTS and COS have positive effects on the thermogenesis. In this study, CTS and COS significantly reduced the weight gain of rats without affecting food intake and effectively inhibited adipose tissue hypertrophy and hyperplasia. Consistently, CTS and COS significantly increased the thermogenic capacity of obese rats induced by high-fat diet (HFD) and increased the expression of browning genes and proteins (UCP1, PGC1α, PRMD16, and ATF2) in white adipose tissue (WAT) and brown adipose tissue (BAT). In vitro, COS inhibited the formation of mature adipocytes and increased the expression of browning genes. In conclusion, COS and CTS was used to explore the function and mechanism on thermogenesis, and CTS and COS can increase the browning of WAT and the thermogenesis of BAT to inhibit obesity. This effect may be achieved by promoting the expression of browning and thermogenic genes, providing new ideas for the utilization of COS and CTS.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The vaginal microbiota may modulate susceptibility to Neisseria gonorrhea (NG) infections. The objective of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the association between these NG infections and the vaginal microbiota. METHOD: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the correlation of vaginal microbiota and NG risk. Primary sources of the reviewed studies were from inception through December 2018. Vaginal mucosa microflora were dichotomized into high-Lactobacillus vaginal microbiota and low-Lactobacillus vaginal microbiota (LL-VMB), using either Nugent score, Amsel's criteria, presence of clue cells or 16S rRNA gene sequencing. RESULTS: A total of 8 studies qualified for inclusion in this meta-analysis. LL-VMB could be regarded as worse prognostic factor, and the pooled OR was 1.33 (95% CI 1.02, 1.73; P = 0.04, I2 = 44%). LL-VMB was associated with a significantly higher susceptibility of NG. Trend for the sensitive analysis was consistence with the primary outcome. Significant publication bias was not detected by the funnel plot. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the systematic review and meta-analysis has demonstrated that LL-VMB was significantly associated with a high NG susceptibility.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the rationality of congenital syphilis (CS) cases reported by physicians in hospitals of various levels in Guangzhou, China. The over-reporting rate was calculated. The results suggested that 49.1% (54 out of 110) of the CS cases reviewed were identified as cases that should be reported; 18 of the 54 CS case were confirmed CS cases and 50.9% (56 out of 110) were identified as over reported. Factors associated with CS case misclassification were analysed. To decrease the incidence of CS, antenatal care management and rapid plasma reagin titres should be provided and the follow up for children should be raised.

ABSTRACT

Chromosomal analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) have been routinely used in detecting recurrent chromosomal abnormalities in patients with various hematological malignancies. However, the genomic imbalances underlying many recurrent abnormalities could not be delineated due to the low resolution of chromosome analysis. We have performed oligonucleotide-array comparative genomic hybridization (oaCGH) in an AML case with a 15p/17p translocation, a suspected 9p21 deletion, monosomies of chromosomes X and 9, and 2 to 60 double minutes. The oaCGH findings confirmed the chromosomal observations and further characterized a 21.338-Mb 17p deletion, a 3.916-Mb deletion at 9p21.3 containing the MTAP, CDKN2A, CDKN2B, and ELAVL2 genes, and a 3.981-Mb 8q24 double minute containing the TRIB1, FAM84B, MYC, and PVT1 genes, with an average of 30 double minutes in each cell. FISH using MYC probes and bacterial artificial chromosome clone probes confirmed the genomic findings and revealed a progressional pattern for the 9p21.3 deletion. These results demonstrate the potential of oaCGH as a powerful diagnostic tool for characterizing genomic imbalances for patients with hematological malignancies.
