ABSTRACT

The imaging findings in 21 patients with ankle fractures were evaluated prospectively to determine the value of MRI in diagnostics of bone, cartilage, ligament and soft tissue lesions. A total of 17 female and 4 male patients aged from 25 to 60 years (mean age 50 years) underwent an MRI examination 2-14 h after trauma. Axial, sagittal and coronal T1-weighted SE and T2-weighted GE images were performed using an extremity coil. We found 2 type A (A 1.2 and A 1.3), 17 type B (3 B 1.1, 3 B 2.1 3 B 2.2, 1 B 2.3, 5 B 3.2 and 2 B 3.3) and 2 type C (C 1.1) fractures. MRI was capable of detecting bone fractures not visible in a conventional X-ray, cartilaginous damage, ligamentous injury and subtle soft tissue lesions. We conclude that the coronal and axial planes are essential for optimal visualization of the major ligaments. The injury patterns found in this examination are identical to those described by Weber. MRI appears to be a useful examination method in special cases, but it is not a suitable screening method because of the high costs and time required.

ABSTRACT

A 48-year-old man had a 3-year history of progressive sensory and motoric disturbance of the lower extremities. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an extensive epidural lipoma reaching from T2 to T10 level. After hemilaminectomy the dorsally located epidural fat was removed. Ten months later the neurological deficit had greatly improved.

ABSTRACT

X-ray characteristics of two cases of primary sclerosing cholangitis are described. A discussion of clinical, immunological and histological features of the disease and the 3-years progress of a 40 year old man during treatment with immunesuppressive therapy (Imurek at the beginning with cortison) is shown. The stop of the progression of the disease is supposed.

ABSTRACT

Labeling of platelets in vivo by 75Se-methionine was performed in premalignant and malignant haematological disorders for evaluation of the kinetics of platelet maturation. The "normal" platelet maturation time (time between the injection of the isotope and maximum radioactivity of separated blood platelets) in eight non-haematological patients showing normal platelet counts was 9.1 days. A shortening of platelet maturation time of 5-7 days was observed in three of four cases with panmyelopathy (high bone marrow cellularity), in three of four cases with malignant lymphatic disorders (multiple myeloma, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, lymphosarcoma), and in two of four cases with myeloproliferative syndromes. No correlation to the peripheral platelet counts was observed. For explanation of the premature platelet release from the bone marrow a disturbance of the megakaryocyte maturation is suggested.

ABSTRACT

Human Growth Hormone (HGH) of the newborn during its first days of life is approximately 61 ng/ml, then it falls between the third and fourth day. This fall in serum concentration principally occurs when the infant stops losing weight and starts regaining it. Experiences show that HGH of newborn does not stem from the mother.

ABSTRACT

An electrolytic method for labelling fibrinogen with zirconium as a reductant for 99mTc is presented. The optimal labelling conditions and the in-vitro screening are subject of the study. First clinical experience indicates that the substance is clottable in vivo and applicable for localization.
