ABSTRACT

The depolarized Raman spectra can be used as a probe to reveal the presence of non-network formers in oxide glasses. Two spectral responses involving the cations are observed below 400 cm-1 in more than 30 compositions of binary and ternary aluminosilicates. One of the two bands arises solely from cations close to non-bridging oxygen providing thereby a simple test for qualifying the polymerization state of the glass. The second feature involves all cations whatever their role in the glass and is found to be twofold: one contribution arises from cations charge compensating (AlO4)- tetrahedra and the other one from network modifier cations. These results confirm the net vibrational contrast of cations depending on their structural surrounding.

ABSTRACT

Detailed crystallographic information provided by X-ray diffraction (XRD) is complementary to molecular information provided by Raman spectroscopy. Accordingly, the combined use of these techniques allows the identification of an unknown compound without ambiguity. However, a full combination of Raman and XRD results requires an appropriate and reliable reference database with complete information. This is already available for XRD. The main objective of this paper is to introduce and describe the recently developed Raman Open Database (ROD, http://solsa.crystallography.net/rod). It comprises a collection of high-quality uncorrected Raman spectra. The novelty of this database is its interconnectedness with other open databases like the Crystallography Open Database (http://www.crystallography.net/cod and Theoretical Crystallography Open Database (http://www.crystallography.net/tcod/). The syntax adopted to format entries in the ROD is based on the worldwide recognized and used CIF format, which offers a simple way for data exchange, writing and description. ROD also uses JCAMP-DX files as an alternative format for submitted spectra. JCAMP-DX files are compatible to varying degrees with most commercial Raman software and can be read and edited using standard text editors.

ABSTRACT

Low frequency dynamics has been studied in a CH3NH3PbBr3 hybrid perovskite single crystal by using four different spectroscopy techniques: coherent inelastic neutron, Raman and Brillouin scatterings, and ultrasound measurements. Sound velocities were measured over five decades in energy to yield the complete set of elastic constants in a hybrid halide perovskite crystal in the pseudocubic plastic phase. The C44 shear elastic constant is very small, leading to a particularly low resistance to shear stress. Brillouin scattering has been used to study the relaxation dynamics of methylammonium cations and to evidence translation-rotation coupling associated with the cubic to tetragonal phase transition at Tc ≈ 230 K. Low frequency and highly damped optical phonons observed using both Raman and inelastic neutron below 18 meV, do not present softening close to Tc. The critical dynamics at Tc ≈ 230 K is compatible with an order-disorder character, dominated by relaxational motions of the molecules.
