ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Dental caries is one of the most common infectious diseases worldwide. Saliva has many functions in the oral cavity and is the first line defense against dental caries. Oxidative stress can affect initiation and progression of many inflammatory and infectious diseases such as dental caries. Thus the aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of saliva and dental caries. STUDY DESIGN: 100 healthy high school students (50 female and 50 male) with age range of 15 -17 years were randomly selected, divided to four groups. Unstimulated whole saliva specimens were collected at the morning. TAC of saliva was evaluated by spectrophotometric assay. Statistical comparisons were performed using Student's t-test, by SPSS 13. RESULTS: The level of TAC was significantly higher in the saliva of caries active group relative to the caries free subjects. Statistical analysis for male and female groups showed a statistically significant reduction of TAC level in female group. CONCLUSION: TAC was higher in caries active group. Thus this result showed that total antioxidant capacity may influence in dental caries and activity can be measured by salivary factors and this may be helpful in preventive dentistry.

ABSTRACT

The roughness of the protein energy surface poses a significant challenge to search algorithms that seek to obtain a structural characterization of the native state. Recent research seeks to bias search toward near-native conformations through one-dimensional structural profiles of the protein native state. Here we investigate the effectiveness of such profiles in a structure prediction setting for proteins of various sizes and folds. We pursue two directions. We first investigate the contribution of structural profiles in comparison to or in conjunction with physics-based energy functions in providing an effective energy bias. We conduct this investigation in the context of Metropolis Monte Carlo with fragment-based assembly. Second, we explore the effectiveness of structural profiles in providing projection coordinates through which to organize the conformational space. We do so in the context of a robotics-inspired search framework proposed in our lab that employs projections of the conformational space to guide search. Our findings indicate that structural profiles are most effective in obtaining physically realistic near-native conformations when employed in conjunction with physics-based energy functions. Our findings also show that these profiles are very effective when employed instead as projection coordinates to guide probabilistic search toward undersampled regions of the conformational space.

Resumen: La hipoacusia neurosensorial severa o profunda es un importante handicap o discapacidad que afecta del 1 a 3 por ciento de los recién nacidos vivos y del 2 al 4 por ciento de los neonatos egresados de las UTI neonatales. El pronóstico para el intelecto, condición psico-emocional, lenguaje y desarrollo del habla, es mejor cuando el diagnóstico es efectuado tempranamente y la intervención comienza antes de los 6 meses de vida. La edad habitual deldiagnóstico de hipoacusia es entre los 18 y los 30 meses, o aún más tarde, en casos de pérdida auditiva leve a moderada, cuando no hay implementados programas de screening auditivos. El screening auditivo universal efectuado a los RN, puededarle al niño discapacitado por sordera, la mejor oportunidad para un óptimo cuidado y desarrollo. El criterio “universal” es necesario, porque cuando el tamizaje es restringido al grupo de neonatos de alto riesgoauditivo, no son diagnosticados entre el 30 y el 50 por ciento de los RNcon pérdida auditiva.
