ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: The aims of this study were twofold. First, to provide evidence of the validity and reliability of the Adolescent Lifestyle Profile-Revised 2 (ALP-R2) among adolescents in Chile; and second, to examine the relationship between the health-promoting behaviors measured by this scale and several demographic variables. Methods: Cross-sectional survey. Students attending grades 9 through 12 from schools representing low-, middle-, and high-income families were included. All schools were in the city of San Felipe, Chile. Students completed the ALP-R2, a fourty-four-item scale aiming to assess health-promoting behaviors. To evaluate validity and reliability, confirmatory factor analysis and omega coefficient calculation were conducted, respectively. Results: The sample size was 572 students (82.5% of the eligible population). More males (56.6%) than females (43.4%) participated in the study, and the mean age was 16.4 (SD, 1.3) years. The ALP-R2 had adequate adjustment indicators in the confirmatory factor analysis, which means that the data supports the original theoretical model (seven subscales). The highest internal consistency was obtained for the total scale (Ω = 0.87); and (among the subscales), physical activity (Ω = 0.85) and spiritual health (Ω = 0.78) had the highest reliability. Conclusions: The ALP-R2 appears to be a valid and reliable instrument to assess health-promoting behaviors among adolescents attending secondary schools.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Reliable and valid instruments are essential for understanding health-promoting behaviors in adolescents. This study analyzed the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Adolescent Lifestyle Profile (ALP).METHODS: A linguistic and cultural translation of the ALP was conducted with 236 adolescents from two different settings: a community (n = 141) and a clinical setting (n = 95). Internal consistency reliability and confirmatory factor analysis were performed.RESULTS: Results showed an adequate fit to data, yielding a 36-item, seven-factor structure (CMIN/DF = 1.667, CFI = 0.807, GFI = 0.822, RMR = 0.051, RMSEA = 0.053, PNFI = 0.575, PCFI = 0.731). The ALP presented a high internal consistency (a = 0.866), with the subscales presenting moderate reliability values (from 0.492 to 0.747). The highest values were in Interpersonal Relations (3.059 ± 0.523) and Positive Life Perspective (2.985 ± 0.588). Some gender differences were found. Findings showed that adolescents from the clinic reported an overall healthier lifestyle than those from the community setting (2.598 ± 0.379 vs. 2.504 ± 0.346; t = 1.976, p = 0.049).CONCLUSION: The ALP Portuguese version is a psychometrically reliable, valid, and useful measurement instrument for assessing health-promoting lifestyles in adolescence. The ALP is cross-culturally validated and can decisively contribute to a better understanding of adolescent health promotion needs. Additional research is needed to evaluate the instrument's predictive validity, as well as its clinical relevance for practice and research.

O ALP apresentou grande coerência interna (a = 0,866).

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the use of tailored messages as a learning tool to volunteer citizen servants to promote health and empower Alabama citizens to live healthier lives. DESIGN AND SAMPLE: Descriptive data of formative and summative questionnaires were analyzed from convenience sampling in this study, which encompassed 12 months. MEASURES: Researchers formed unique partnerships among community service organizations (CSO), faith-based organizations (FBO), author affiliated school of nursing, and community organizations to implement Healthy People 2010 goals. The program provided "health information stations" to focus on delivery of monthly culturally relevant messages to meet the health needs in the community. RESULTS: This program provided tailored health messages to 11 CSO and FBO. Outcome measures include an increase in health promotion knowledge, desire for furtherance and expansion of programs, and improved contacts within the community. CONCLUSIONS: The results from this study provide achievement of overall program goals, suggestions for improved evaluation strategies, implementation plans, and examples of specific topical messages.

ABSTRACT

To develop solutions to the public health challenges of inactivity, obesity, and cardiovascular disease in minority women, community/education partnerships bring together different groups, each contributing their unique strengths and sharing responsibilities. This paper describes how an academic/community partnership resulted in the development of a gym to promote physical activity for underserved African-American women. For over 10 years, Auburn University School of Nursing (AUSON) has partnered with the Auburn Housing Authority Community. Based on feedback from community focus groups, the physical activity project was started at a local gym. With participation from various groups, a fully functioning gym is in place. Women from the community have made fitness gains and serve as role models for their families and the community. Lessons learned in establishing the program include the need to provide for accessibility and flexibility and the importance of giving encouragement and promoting ownership.

ABSTRACT

The elderly are growing rapidly today as life expectancy increases. As this longevity has increased, so has the need for filial caregivers. While much has been written about caregiving stress, little has been written regarding the ethical dimensions of filial responsibility and daughter and son caregivers' perceptions of responsibility and moral demands. This paper will address the concept of family caregiving and contextual family characteristics. Family characteristics will expand awareness of the interrelationship value between the nature of the prior filial relationship, image of caregiving, and ethical views that underscore acceptance of the filial obligation. An explanation of both the interview process and selected measurements that speak to ethical perspective, sense of caregiving image, and expectations of filial caregiving will also be addressed. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to elucidate how adult children may be helped in an anticipatory and proactive manner as more and more adult children take on parent care for longer durations of time.

ABSTRACT

Adolescents establish patterns of behavior and make lifestyle choices that affect their future health during their transition from childhood to adulthood. They struggle with behaviors, such as physical activity and nutrition, which will affect their risk of developing chronic diseases in adulthood. A comprehensive, easy to administer instrument is needed that is both research worthy and clinically useful in order to assess adolescent lifestyle behaviors and to plan interventions appropriately. The purpose of this paper is to report the development and testing of the Adolescent Lifestyle Profile (ALP), a Likert-type instrument to measure seven domains of a health-promoting lifestyle in adolescents. The ALP was modeled after the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP II) and tested in a sample of early adolescents. Internal consistency reliability, including Cronbach's alpha, item to total correlations and subscale to total scale correlations and construct validity, including concurrent validity testing and factor analysis, indicated that the ALP is a reliable and valid scale that can be used to assess healthy lifestyle domains in adolescents.

ABSTRACT

This paper reports findings of an integrative review of the literature on spirituality in AA breast cancer survivors, isolates key spiritual themes, and recommends future research. Inclusion criteria are 1994 to 2004 research studies that included AA breast cancer survivors 18 years old and older. Content analysis was used to isolate spiritual themes and spiritual domains/dimensions. Seven studies resulted that used qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods. Themes identified were spirituality provided the strength to cope; the need to care for others and receive care; beliefs that God is the healer and in control; God assists in decision-making; and closeness to God. Spiritual domains were beliefs, functions, and social support. Future research should explore the domains/dimensions and meanings of spirituality experienced by diverse groups ofAA breast cancer survivors. Culturally appropriate, evidence-based nursing care should include spiritually based interventions that acknowledge the significance of God.

ABSTRACT

The absence of the father in the resident home is an increasing trend in the United States, and the belief that the absence of fathers is lined with a variety of social pathologies is gaining national momentum. This study explored the relationship of father absence on self-esteem and self-reported sexual activity among rural southern adolescents. A sample of 1,409 adolescents (558 males and 851 females) aged 11 to 18 years was surveyed, and the Miller Self-Esteem Questionnaire (MSQ) was used to measure self-esteem. Analysis revealed that increased sexual activity occurred by adolescents in homes where no father present in the residence. Although a statistical significance was noted in the relationship between father absence and lower self-esteem, the magnitude of the difference was not large. Further, no relationship between self-esteem and sexual activity was noted. Seemingly, the absence of the father has a potentially detrimental effect on adolescents' lifestyle choices. Consideration of the notion that the phenomena of fathering rather than the mere presence of a father may contribute to differences in adolescent's lifestyle choices should be studied.
