ABSTRACT

The correlations between activities of daily living (ADL) among patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) and their caregivers' burden, quality of life (QoL), and presenteeism was investigated. Participants included outpatients and inpatients with SCI at a rehabilitation center and their caregivers, recruited between March 2020 and April 2021. Eighty-seven valid responses were analysed using independent t-tests and Pearson's correlations. There was a difference in caregiver burden according to patients' ADL performance. QoL was negatively correlated with caregiver burden and presenteeism. Caregiver burden and presenteeism were positively correlated. Social support can improve caregivers' QoL and reduce caregiver burden and presenteeism-induced work impairment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To describe caregiver burden according to the caregivers' general characteristics, especially with ageing, and type of care activities provided by caregivers of individuals with spinal cord injury. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was conducted utilizing a structured questionnaire that included general characteristics, health conditions, and caregiver burden. SETTING: A single center study in Seoul, Korea. SUBJECTS: Participants were recruited from 87 individuals with spinal cord injuries and 87 caregivers. METHODS: The Caregiver Burden Inventory was used to assess caregiver burden. RESULTS: Caregiver burden was significantly different by age (p = 0.001), relationship (p = 0.025), sleep hours (p = <0.001), underlying disease (p = 0.018), pain (p = <0.001), and daily activities of individuals with spinal cord injury (p = 0.001). Caregiver's age (B = 0.339, p = 0.049), sleep duration (B = -2.896, p = 0.012) and pain (B = 2.558, p < 0.001) predicted caregiver burden. Toileting assistance was the most challenging and time-consuming for caregivers, while patient transfer was associated with the greatest concerns for body injury. CONCLUSION: Caregiver education should be targeted according to caregiver's age and type of assistance. Social policies need to be developed to distribute devices and care-robots to reduce caregiver burden and thereby assist caregivers.

ABSTRACT

Tunicate cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) have received widespread attention as renewable and eco-friendly engineering materials because of their high crystallinity and mechanical stiffness. Here, we report the effects of disintegration process conditions on structure-property relationships of tunicate CNFs. By varying the hydrolysis time, we could establish a correlation between crystallinity of the CNFs with linearity and stiffness, which produces different molecular ordering within their nanostructured films. Despite having identical raw materials, tensile strength and thermal conductivity of the resulting layered films varied widely, ranging from 95.6 to 205 MPa and from 1.08 to 2.37 W/mK respectively. Furthermore, nanolayered CNF films provided highly anisotropic thermal conductivities with an in- and through-plane ratio of 21.5. Our systematic investigations will provide general and practical strategies in tailoring material properties for emerging engineering applications, including flexible paper electronics, heat sink adhesives and biodegradable, implantable devices.

ABSTRACT

Commercial activated carbon was treated with six quaternary ammonium salts (Quats), namely, hexyltrimethylammonium (HTMA), octyltrimethylammonium (OTMA), decyltrimethylammonium (DCTMA), dodecyltrimethylammonium (DDTMA), Tetradecyltrimethylammonium (TDTMA), and hexadecyltrimethylammoium (HDTMA) as to enhance the fluoride adsorption capacity. In batch mode experiments, fluoride adsorption onto the Quats-treated activated carbon decreased dramatically with increase in solution pH. Fluoride removal by the Quats-treated activated carbons was closely related to the Quats chain length at less-than critical micelle concentration (CMC). Multi-site adsorption isotherm described fluoride adsorption characteristics well. Results showed that activated carbon treated with DDTMA exhibited the best fluoride adsorption density among all Quats investigated. DDTMA-treated activated carbons exhibited two-fold increase in the fluoride adsorption capacity compared to the untreated activated carbon. Results of regeneration, by alkaline desorption and/or Quats re-loading, showed fluoride-laden activated carbons have high reusability. DDTMA increased the positive surface charge of the activated carbon that enhanced fluoride adsorption. DDTMA-treated activated carbon was promising for fluoride removal from water with much enhanced removal capacity.

ABSTRACT

Natural melanins are biocompatible conductors with versatile functionalities. Here, we report fabrication of multifunctional poly(vinyl alcohol)/melanin nanocomposites by layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly using melanin nanoparticles (MNPs) directly extracted from sepia officinalis inks. The LBL assembly offers facile manipulation of nanotextures as well as nm-thickness control of the macroscale film by varying solvent qualities. The time-resolved absorption was monitored during the process and quantitatively studied by fractal dimension and lacunarity analysis. The capability of nanoarchitecturing provides confirmation of complete monolayer formation and leads to tunable iridescent reflective colors of the MNP films. In addition, the MNP films have durable electrochemical conductivities as evidenced by enhanced charge storage capacities for 1000 cycles. Moreover, the MNP covered ITO (indium tin oxide) substrates significantly reduced secretion of inflammatory cytokines, TNF-α, by raw 264.7 macrophage cells compared to bare ITO, by a factor of 5 and 1.8 with and without lipopolysaccharide endotoxins, respectively. These results highlight the optoelectronic device-level tunability along with the anti-inflammatory biocompatibility of the MNP LBL film. This combination of performance should make these films particularly interesting for bioelectronic device applications such as electroceuticals, artificial bionic organs, biosensors, and implantable devices.
