ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Long-acting injectable buprenorphine (LAIB) has demonstrated a good profile for opioid use disorder (OUD) management. However, there is scarce information on LAIB in OUD patients with comorbid mental disorders (dual disorder patients). METHODS: We present a case report on OUD patients with a comorbid mental disorder who have received LAIB for at least 3 months. RESULTS: Two women and one man with OUD and another comorbid mental disorder were prescribed with LAIB ranging from three to twelve months. Good adherence and opioid abstinence were observed during the follow-up. Psychopathological issues related to comorbid mental disorders were stabilized. A deep discussion on LAIB in this profile of patients is conducted. CONCLUSIONS: LAIB in OUD patients with comorbid mental disorders may be a safe and well tolerated option, similar to OUD patients without comorbid mental disorders. LAIB's impact on psychopathological issues requires further high-quality research to understand the real impact of LAIB on OUD and comorbid mental disorders.

ABSTRACT

The Western honey bee Apis mellifera is a managed species that provides diverse hive products and contributing to wild plant pollination, as well as being a critical component of crop pollination systems worldwide. High mortality rates have been reported in different continents attributed to different factors, including pesticides, pests, diseases, and lack of floral resources. Furthermore, climate change has been identified as a potential driver negatively impacting pollinators, but it is still unclear how it could affect honey bee populations. In this context, we carried out a systematic review to synthesize the effects of climate change on honey bees and beekeeping activities. A total of 90 articles were identified, providing insight into potential impacts (negative, neutral, and positive) on honey bees and beekeeping. Interest in climate change's impact on honey bees has increased in the last decade, with studies mainly focusing on honey bee individuals, using empirical and experimental approaches, and performed at short-spatial (<10 km) and temporal (<5 years) scales. Moreover, environmental analyses were mainly based on short-term data (weather) and concentrated on only a few countries. Environmental variables such as temperature, precipitation, and wind were widely studied and had generalized negative effects on different biological and ecological aspects of honey bees. Food reserves, plant-pollinator networks, mortality, gene expression, and metabolism were negatively impacted. Knowledge gaps included a lack of studies at the apiary and beekeeper level, a limited number of predictive and perception studies, poor representation of large-spatial and mid-term scales, a lack of climate analysis, and a poor understanding of the potential impacts of pests and diseases. Finally, climate change's impacts on global beekeeping are still an emergent issue. This is mainly due to their diverse effects on honey bees and the potential necessity of implementing adaptation measures to sustain this activity under complex environmental scenarios.


La abeja occidental Apis mellifera es una especie manejada que proporciona diversos productos de la colmena y servicios de polinización, los cuales son cruciales para plantas silvestres y cultivos en todo el mundo. En distintos continentes se han registrado altas tasas de mortalidad, las cuales son atribuidas a diversos factores, como el uso de pesticidas, plagas, enfermedades y falta de recursos florales. Además, el cambio climático ha sido identificado como un potencial factor que afecta negativamente a los polinizadores, pero aún no está claro cómo podría afectar a las poblaciones de abejas melíferas. En este contexto, realizamos una revisión sistemática de la literatura disponible para sintetizar los efectos del cambio climático en las abejas melíferas y las actividades apícolas. En total, se identificaron 90 artículos que proporcionaron información sobre los posibles efectos (negativos, neutros y positivos) en las abejas melíferas y la apicultura. El interés por el impacto del cambio climático en las abejas melíferas ha aumentado en la última década, con estudios centrados principalmente en individuos de abejas melíferas, utilizando enfoques empíricos y experimentales y realizados a escalas espaciales (<10 km) y temporales (<5 años) cortas. Además, los análisis ambientales fueron basaron principalmente en datos a corto plazo (meteorológicos) y se concentraron sólo en algunos países. Variables ambientales como la temperatura, las precipitaciones y el viento fueron ampliamente estudiadas y tuvieron efectos negativos generalizados sobre distintos aspectos biológicos y ecológicos de las abejas melíferas. Además, las reservas alimenticias, las interacciones planta-polinizador, la mortalidad, la expresión génica y el metabolismo se vieron afectados negativamente. Entre los vacios de conocimiento cabe mencionar la falta de estudios a nivel de colmenar y apicultor, la escasez de estudios de predicción y percepción, la escasa representación de las grandes escalas espaciales y a mediano plazo, el déficit de análisis climáticos y la escasa comprensión de los impactos potenciales de plagas y enfermedades. Por último, las repercusiones del cambio climático en la apicultura mundial siguen siendo un tema emergente, que debe estudiarse en los distintos países. Esto se debe principalmente a sus diversos efectos sobre las abejas melíferas y a la necesidad potencial de aplicar medidas de adaptación para mantener esta actividad crucial en escenarios medioambientales complejos.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the mental health of patients with substance use disorder (SUD). However, few longitudinal studies have been done which examine associations between the pandemic, SUD patients' mental health and their drug use. Objectives: This study aimed to examine duration of abstinence according to psychiatric status among SUD outpatients followed-up for 18 months from the pandemic related lockdown. Methods: A follow-up study of 316 SUD outpatients was undertaken. Sociodemographic features, and clinical and consumption related variables were recorded. Pre, during and post lockdown information was evaluated. Abstinence/substance use was monitored at the patient's scheduled follow-up appointments, and psychiatric disorders and psychological variables were revaluated at 18 months. Results: Survival analyses were used to compare the duration of abstinence (in months) from the beginning of the lockdown. It was observed that 70% of patients consumed the main substance for which they were being treated at some point during the follow-up. Men, younger patients, those with more symptoms of anxiety and personality disorders, and patients who experienced increased craving during follow-up, showed shorter duration of abstinence. While patients who had previously maintained at least one year of abstinence, achieved better results. Conclusions: During the first year and a half of the pandemic, SUD outpatients presented alterations in mental health, such us anxiety, depression and maladaptive personality traits and a high rate of relapse. For this reason, despite the health and social crisis and their restrictive measures, a comprehensive treatment should be ensured.

ABSTRACT

CRISPR (short for "Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats") is a technology that research scientists use to selectively modify the DNA of living organisms. CRISPR was adapted for use in the laboratory from the naturally occurring genome-editing systems found in bacteria. In this work, we reviewed the methods used to introduce CRISPR/Cas-mediated genome editing into fruit species, as well as the impacts of the application of this technology to activate and knock out target genes in different fruit tree species, including on tree development, yield, fruit quality, and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. The application of this gene-editing technology could allow the development of new generations of fruit crops with improved traits by targeting different genetic segments or even could facilitate the introduction of traits into elite cultivars without changing other traits. However, currently, the scarcity of efficient regeneration and transformation protocols in some species, the fact that many of those procedures are genotype-dependent, and the convenience of segregating the transgenic parts of the CRISPR system represent the main handicaps limiting the potential of genetic editing techniques for fruit trees. Finally, the latest news on the legislation and regulations about the use of plants modified using CRISPR/Cas systems has been also discussed.

The development of hybrid plants can increase the production and quality of blue corn, and, thus, satisfy its high demand. For this development, it is essential to understand the heterotic relationships of the germplasm. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining ability, as well as the reciprocal effects (REs) on the yields of 10 blue corn lines, and to select the outstanding lines. Diallel crosses were generated with 10 lines and evaluated at the Valle de México Experimental Station in Chapingo, Mexico, and Calpulalpan, Tlaxcala, Mexico. There were differences (p ≤ 0.01) in the hybrids, Loc, effects of GCA, SCA, and REs, and in the following interactions: hybrids × Loc, GCA × Loc, SCA × Loc, and RE × Loc. For GCA, lines Ll, L4, L6, and L9 stood out, with significant values of 3.4, 2.9, 2.9, and 3.1, respectively. For SCA, the hybrids featured were L4 × L10, L2 × L10, L1 × L10, L7 × L8, and L2 × L6, with values of 3.0, 2.5, 2.3, 2.3, and 2.2, and yields of 11.2, 10.2, 10.4, 10.4, and 10.5 t ha-l, respectively. There were no significant REs in these lines. Considerable effects of GCA and SCA were detected; therefore, we concluded that native populations had favorable dominance and additive genetic effects that could be used to support the development of high-yielding lines and hybrids.

ABSTRACT

Native corn in Cherán, Michoacán, southwestern Mexico, represents a high-impact economic, social, and religious support, although its yield is low due to fungal diseases. Fungicides are mainly used for their control, but the fungi involved create resistance. The aims of this study are to determine the incidence of foliar diseases in the field, isolate the causal fungi, evaluate the in vitro effect of the essential oil of rue (Ruta graveolens) on them, and identify the secondary metabolites. The essential oil was obtained using the steam distillation technique on fresh plants. Also used was an industrial-grade chitosan, and the commercial fungicide benomyl was used as a positive control. Rue essential oil was characterized by mass spectrometry with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization (UHPLC-ESI). The highest incidence of disease was obtained for leaf rust (35%), followed by gray leaf spot (GLS) (24%) and leaf blight (19%). Rue essential oil inhibited 100% of the mycelial growth of Coniothyrium phyllachorae and 96% of the mycelium of Exseroilum turcicum. The benomyl fungicide effectively inhibited C. phyllachorae (86 to 91%), but not E. turcicum, with the opposite effect when using chitosan by inhibiting 89 to 90% of the latter's mycelial development. The majority compound of the essential oil of R. graveolens was 2-(3-phenylprop-2-enoyl)chromen-4-one; however, fatty acids were also detected: linoleic, palmitic, and retinoic acid.

ABSTRACT

Suicidal behaviors are common among patients with substance use disorders (SUD). However, the prevalence and clinical factors related to suicide behaviors among patients who have had substance-induced psychosis (SIP) is unknown. This study aims to explore the prevalence, clinical features, and factors related to lifetime suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SA) in patients who have had SIP across their lifetime. A cross-sectional study was conducted in an outpatient center for addiction treatment between 01/01/2010 and 12/31/2021. 601 patients were evaluated with validated scales and questionnaires (79.03% males; M age 38.11±10.11 years). The prevalence of SI and SA was 55.4% and 33.6%, respectively. SI was independently related to any type of lifetime abuse, depressive spectrum disorders, benzodiazepine use disorder, borderline personality disorder, and the level of depressive symptoms. SA was independently associated with lifetime physical abuse, benzodiazepine use disorder, the number of psychotic symptoms, borderline personality disorder, and the level of depressive symptoms. The main factors related to SI and SA in those patients should be evaluated in daily clinical practice and considered in any approach to clinical practice as well as in health policies targeting suicide prevention.

Introducción y objetivos: El espectro de la conducta suicida tiene un carácter nuclear en el pronóstico y manejo delTrastorno Límite de la Personalidad (TLP). El objetivo de esteestudio es identificar posibles rasgos de personalidad específicos del TLP que puedan actuar como protectores de lasautolesiones sin finalidad suicida (ASFS).Método. Se realiza un estudio transversal, observacionaly retrospectivo, de una muestra de 134 pacientes de entre 18y 56 años con TLP. La evaluación clínica se llevó a cabo conun cuestionario que valoraba la presencia o no de conductas suicidas (CS) y ASFS y distintas variables sociodemográficas. También se realizaron cuestionarios de personalidad:Inventario Clínico Multiaxial de Millon II, Cuestionario dePersonalidad de Zuckerman-Kuhlman y la entrevista ClínicaEstructurada para el eje II del DSM (SCID). La asociación entre variables se analizó a través de un modelo de regresiónlogística multivariado y binomial negativaResultados. Se encuentra una asociación estadísticamente significativa entre la CS con las ASFS y entre realizarmayor número de intentos de suicidio y la presencia de ASFS.Respectivamente, las ASFS se asocian de forma estadísticamente significativa con los intentos de suicidio. Por otrolado, se objetivan diferencias estadísticamente significativasen la asociación de ASFS con las variables en el SCID Trastorno Narcisista, apareciendo como variable con efecto protector. Los resultados presentados proporcionan una idea de larelación dinámica entre NSSI y SB en una población TLP concaracterísticas de gravedad. Conclusiones. El papel de los rasgos de personalidad narcisistas puede ser importante a la hora de identificar factoresprotectores para las NSSI y SB en TLP y podría ser objeto dedesarrollo de ulteriores proyectos de investigación. The role of narcissistic personality traitsappears to be important in identifying protective factors forNSSI and suicidal behavior in BPD patients and could be thesubject of further research projects. Each year, construction and demolition (C&D) waste contributes at least 25,000 tonnes to the total amount of plastic landfilled in Auckland, New Zealand. The growing use of plastic in the packaging of building materials, use of polystyrene and products, such as building wrap, are contributing to this. Unlike countries such as the UK, most construction waste in New Zealand is not sorted on-site, and C&D waste is often co-mingled; therefore, minimal analysis on the recoverability of plastics has been attempted. This study identified and quantified the plastic waste stream produced from four construction sites, generated from various stages of construction in Auckland, New Zealand. Plastic waste was taken over three construction stages including demolition, exterior and weatherproofing and services and cladding, amounting to 112 kg (or 11.2 m3). The main types of plastic analysed were polyethylene, contributing 77% (by mass), and polyvinyl chloride, representing 31% (by mass). The main reason for the generation of plastic waste across the four sites was highly variable and dependent on construction stage. However, it was apparent that plastic packaging of materials was not the single area of concern, and plastic building componentry and protection materials should also be investigated for their contribution. This study supports the requirement for improved understanding and awareness around the composition and fate of plastic C&D waste. Long-term benefits to the construction industry are from raising awareness of the potential to make profits from valuable waste products and to improve environmental performance and reputation, for a competitive advantage in New Zealand.

Nos reunimos hoy en este recinto, Auditorio César Augusto Pantoja, para celebrar los primeros 150 años de existencia de la Academia Nacional de Medicina de Colombia, institución científica sin ánimo de lucro, que nace como Sociedad de Medicina y Ciencias Naturales el 3 de enero de 1873, en la casa del doctor Abraham Aparicio Cruz, lugar donde se realizó la primera reunión de la mencionada sociedad.

ABSTRACT

La Academia Nacional de Medicina de Colombia, institución científica sin ánimo de lucro, nace como Sociedad de Medicina y Ciencias Naturales el 3 de enero de 1873, y adquiere vida jurídica por la Ley 071 del 22 de noviembre de 1890, cuando fue sancionada por el presidente de la República, Dr. Carlos Holguín. Había sido aprobada por el congreso el 16 del mismo mes y año. Lo anterior significa que, después de casi 18 años, se reconoce a la Sociedad de Medicina y Ciencias Naturales de Bogotá, como la Academia Nacional de Medicina y sus miembros fueron los mismos integrantes que conformaban la ya existente y activa sociedad.

La alexitimia es altamente prevalente en pacientes con trastorno por uso de sustancias (TUS) y ha sido relacionado conla patogénesis y la evolución del TUS. Sin embargo, el instrumento más frecuentemente usado para la medición de laalexitimia (la Escala de Alexitimia de Toronto de 20 ítems- TAS-20) ha sido poco estudiado en cuanto a sus propiedades psicométricas en pacientes con TUS. Solamente cincoestudios han evaluado las características psicométricas de laTAS-20 en pacientes con TUS y ninguno en población española con TUS. Por lo anterior, se realizó un análisis factorialconfirmatorio y de fiabilidad en una muestra de pacientesespañoles con TUS (n=126; 75,4% hombres; edad media de43,7±14,6 años). El análisis factorial confirmatorio se realizóconsiderando que la TAS-20 tiene una estructura de tres factores (Dificultad para Identificar Sentimientos [DIF]; Dificultad para Describir Sentimientos [DDF]; Pensamiento Orientado hacia lo Externo [EOT]). En general, la TAS-20 tiene unaspropiedades psicométricas adecuadas en pacientes españolescon TUS. Sin embargo, el modelo clásico de tres factores dela TAS-20 se ajusta solo moderadamente bien en pacientesespañoles con TUS, siendo los factores DIF y DDF los constructos fiables y válidos, mientras que el factor EOT necesitamás investigación y debe analizarse con cautela en pacientescon adicciones. Specifically, only five psychometric studieshave been performed with samples of SUD patients, andno studies have focused exclusively on Spanish patientswith SUDs. Therefore, the aim of the present study was toexamine the internal accuracy and reliability of the TAS20 with a sample of Spanish SUD patients (n = 126; 75.4%male; mean age 43.7 ± 14.6 years). A reliability analysis and aconfirmatory factor analysis were executed, considering thatTAS-20 has a three-factor structure (difficulty identifyingfeelings [DIF]; difficulty describing feelings [DDF]; externallyoriented thinking [EOT]). The results indicated that TAS20’s psychometric properties are acceptable for assessingalexithymia in Spanish patients with SUDs. However,the three-factor model of TAS-20 was found to fit onlymoderately well with the patient sample, with DIF and DDFbeing the most reliable and valid constructs. In contrast, theEOT factor needs further research and should be cautiouslyanalyzed in the context of patients with addictions. (AU)

Rapa Nui is an important hotspot of endemic marine biodiversity, where diffuse land-based sources (e.g., nutrients and organic matter) entering into coastal waters could develop eutrophication in coastal environments, with deleterious impacts on the marine ecosystem. Stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) of intertidal communities (macroalgae and invertebrates) were studied from sites with contrasting human influence (populated and unpopulated), to evaluate the incorporation and transfer of diffuse land-based sources through food webs. Macroalgae showed differences between some sites, and invertebrates showed a 15N-enrichment pattern at populated areas relative to unpopulated, being these differences significant in gastropods, barnacles and sea urchins. Moreover, trophic structure metrics suggest a higher trophic diversity in populated areas relative to unpopulated and support the isotopic partitioning between sites, associated with the incorporation of sources with 15N-enriched values. The above suggests that diffuse land-based sources could be incorporated by macroalgae, transferred into benthic consumers, and altering the trophic structure.

Osteopontin (OPN) is considered a clinical predictor of cardiovascular disease. We aimed to evaluate the association of the OPN gene polymorphisms rs2728127 and rs11730582 with the development of premature coronary artery disease (pCAD), cardiovascular risk factors, and cardiometabolic parameters. We evaluated 1142 patients with pCAD and 1073 controls. Both polymorphisms were determined by Taqman assays. Similar allele and genotype frequencies were observed in both groups; additionally, an association of these polymorphisms with CAD and cardiometabolic parameters was observed in both groups. In patients with pCAD, the rs11730582 was associated with a high risk of hypoadiponectinemia (OR = 1.300, P additive = 0.003), low risk of hypertension (OR = 0.709, P codominant 1 = 0.030), and low risk of having high non-HDL cholesterol (OR = 0.637, P additive = 0.038). In the control group, the rs2728127 was associated with a low risk of fatty liver (OR = 0.766, P additive = 0.038); while the rs11730582 was associated with a low risk of hypoadiponectinemia (OR = 0.728, P dominant = 0.022), and risk of having elevated apolipoprotein B (OR = 1.400, P dominant = 0.031). Our results suggest that in Mexican individuals, the rs11730582 and rs2728127 OPN gene polymorphisms are associated with some abnormal metabolic variables in patients with pCAD and controls.

ABSTRACT

Mesophotic and deeper habitats (∼40 to 350 m in depth) around Rapa Nui (Easter Island) were investigated using a remotely operated vehicle. We observed extensive fields of filamentous cyanobacteria-like mats covering sandy substrates and mostly dead mesophotic Leptoseris spp. reefs. These mats covered up to 100% of the seafloor off Hanga Roa, the main village on the island, located on its western side. The highest mortality of corals was observed at depths between 70 and 95 m in this area. Healthy Leptoseris reefs were documented off the northern and southeastern sides of the island, which are also the least populated. A preliminary morphologic analysis of samples of the mats indicated that the assemblage is composed of at least four filamentous taxa, including two cyanobacteria (cf. Lyngbya sp. and Pseudoanabaena sp.), a brown alga (Ectocarpus sp.), and a green alga (Cladophora sp.). An ongoing eutrophication process is suggested as a potential driver of the proliferation of these filamentous mats off Hanga Roa village.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hemodialysis patients are at increased risk of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and are poorly responsive to HBV vaccines. Current vaccine recommendations for hemodialysis patients utilize more than twice the amount of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) used for healthy adults and achieve lower immune responses. METHODS: An open-label, single-arm, multicenter trial was conducted among adults 18 years of age and older who were initiating or undergoing hemodialysis who had not previously received hepatitis B vaccine. Participants received four doses of HepB-CpG (HEPLISAV-B®) (20 mcg rHBsAg + 3000 mcg CpG 1018, a Toll-like receptor 9 agonist) administered at 0, 4, 8, and 16 weeks. Participants are being followed for 68 weeks. This paper reports the final immunogenicity analysis of the primary endpoint at study week 20 and an interim safety analysis. RESULTS: We enrolled 119 participants receiving hemodialysis who were followed for a median of 47.4 weeks. Of the 119 participants, 75 were in the per-protocol population. At week 20, the seroprotection rate (% with antibodies to hepatitis B surface antigen [anti-HBs] ≥ 10 mIU/mL) was 89.3% and the percentage of participants with anti-HBs ≥ 100 mIU/mL was 81.3%. The anti-HBs geometric mean concentration was 1061.8 mIU/mL. HepB-CpG was well tolerated with no observed safety concerns. CONCLUSION: In patients receiving hemodialysis, HepB-CpG given as four doses was well tolerated and induced very high anti-HBs concentrations and seroprotection in a very high proportion of recipients.

ABSTRACT

Three pathogenic fungi of blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) responsible for dieback disease, identified as Pestalotiopsis clavispora, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae, were isolated in the northwestern region of the state of Michoacán, Mexico. The mycelial growth in vitro of these fungi was inhibited by extracts from Lantana hirta, Argemone ochroleuca and Adenophyllum porophyllum, medicinal plants collected in Sahuayo, Michoacán, Mexico. The extracts showed different degrees of inhibition; the most effective were: M5L extract from L. hirta and M6LFr extract from A. ochroleuca, both of which inhibited 100% of the mycelial growth of P. clavispora and C. gloeosporioides; and M4LS extract from A. porophyllum, which inhibited 100% of the mycelial growth of the three pathogens. The extracts were fractionated by thin layer and column chromatography, and the most active fractions were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The major compounds identified in L. hirta extract were Phytol and α-Sitosterol. The compounds identified in A. ochroleuca were Toluene and Benzene, 1,3-bis(3-phenoxyphenoxy)-. In A. porophyllum, the compound identified was Hexanedioic acid, bis(2-ethylhexyl) ester. These results show the potential of L. hirta, A. ochroleuca and A. porophyllum as a source of antifungal compounds.
