ABSTRACT

The immobilization of gold nanoparticle (AuNP) linear surface assemblies on polycarbonate (PC) melt surface via molding is investigated. The order of the particle assemblies is preserved during the molding process. The assemblies on PC exhibit plasmonic coupling features and dichroic properties. The structure of the assemblies is quantified based on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and image analysis data using an orientational order parameter. The transfer process from mold to melt shows high structural fidelity. The order parameter of around 0.98 reflects the orientation of the lines and remains unaffected, independent of the injection direction of the melt relative to the particle lines. This is discussed in the frame of fountain flow during injection molding. The particles were permanently fixed and withstood the injection molding process, detachment of the substrate, and extraction in boiling ethanol. The plasmonic particles coupled strongly within the dense nanoparticle lines to produce anisotropic optical properties, as quantified by dichroic ratios of 0.28 and 0.52 using ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) spectroscopy. AuNP line assemblies on a polymer surface may be a basis for plasmonic devices like surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors or a precursor for nanowires. Their embedding via injection molding constitutes an important link between particle-self-assembly approaches for optically functional surfaces and polymer processing techniques.

ABSTRACT

The hybridization of plasmonic energy and charge donors with polymeric acceptors is a possible means to overcome fast internal relaxation that limits potential photocatalytic applications for plasmonic nanomaterials. Polyaniline (PANI) readily hybridizes onto gold nanorods (AuNRs) and has been used for the sensitive monitoring of local refractive index changes. Here, we use single-particle spectroscopy to quantify a previously unreported plasmon damping mechanism in AuNR-PANI hybrids while actively tuning the PANI chemical structure. By eliminating contributions from heterogeneous line width broadening and refractive index changes, we identify efficient resonance energy transfer (RET) between AuNRs and PANI. We find that RET dominates the optical response in our AuNR-PANI hybrids during the dynamic tuning of the spectral overlap of the AuNR donor and PANI acceptor. Harnessing RET between plasmonic nanomaterials and an affordable and processable polymer such as PANI offers an alternate mechanism toward efficient photocatalysis with plasmonic nanoparticle antennas.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The main aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic exercise for managing pain and disability in patients with cervicogenic headache (CEH). METHODS: A protocol for this systematic review was published in PROSPERO (CRD42019122703). PRISMA and AMSTAR2 standards were followed. Based on an extensive systematic search in five databases (EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINHAL, PsychInfo and SportDISCUS) and the CENTRAL trial register, two reviewers carefully and independently assessed, selected results, collected data, rated the risk of bias (RoB) of included studies with the Cochrane risk of bias tool, synthesized the available evidence, and rated it using GRADE methodology. RESULTS: A total of 12 manuscripts, reporting on 11 studies were included. Most studies showed a high risk of bias (63,63%). Additionally, a great deal of heterogeneity was observed regarding interventions, comparisons, and outcomes and thus, results could not be synthesized in meta-analyses. The quality of the evidence was found to be from low to very low. Significant differences with large effect sizes were found when comparing multimodal exercise vs. control groups on headache outcomes (SMD = 0.73; 95%CI [0.31, 1.14] for headache intensity and SMD = 0.98; 95%CI [0.56, 1.41], for headache frequency). CONCLUSIONS: Findings indicate that therapeutic exercise may be effective to achieve clinically relevant reductions in headache intensity and frequency as well as disability for patients suffering from cervicogenic headache. However, more high-quality research is needed to gain confidence in this finding and possibly determine optimal types and dosage of therapeutic exercise.

ABSTRACT

Metal nanoparticles are increasingly used as key elements in the fabrication and processing of advanced electronic systems and devices. For future device integration, their charge transport properties are essential. This has been exploited, e.g., in the development of gold-nanoparticle-based conductive inks and chemiresistive sensors. Colloidal wires and metal nanoparticle lines can also be used as interconnection structures to build directional electrical circuits, e.g., for signal transduction. Our scalable bottom-up, template-assisted self-assembly creates gold-nanorod (AuNR) lines that feature comparably small widths, as well as good conductivity. However, the bottom-up approach poses the question about the consistency of charge transport properties between individual lines, as this approach leads to heterogeneities among those lines with regard to AuNR orientation, as well as line defects. Therefore, we test the conductance of the AuNR lines and identify requirements for a reliable performance. We reveal that multiple parallel AuNR lines (>11) are necessary to achieve predictable conductivity properties, defining the level of miniaturization possible in such a setup. With this system, even an active area of only 16 µm2 shows a higher conductance (~10-5 S) than a monolayer of gold nanospheres with dithiolated-conjugated ligands and additionally features the advantage of anisotropic conductance.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To identify assessment tools used to evaluate patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) considered to be clinically most useful by a panel of international experts in TMD physical therapy (PT). METHODS: A Delphi survey method administered to a panel of international experts in TMD PT was conducted over three rounds from October 2017 to June 2018. The initial contact was made by email. Participation was voluntary. An e-survey, according to the Checklist for Reporting Results of Internet E-Surveys (CHERRIES), was posted using SurveyMonkey for each round. Percentages of responses were analysed for each question from each round of the Delphi survey administrations. RESULTS: Twenty-three experts (completion rate: 23/25) completed all three rounds of the survey for three clinical test categories: 1) questionnaires, 2) pain screening tools and 3) physical examination tests. The following was the consensus-based decision regarding the identification of the clinically most useful assessments. (1) Four of 9 questionnaires were identified: Jaw Functional Limitation (JFL-8), Mandibular Function Impairment Questionnaire (MFIQ), Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia for Temporomandibular disorders (TSK/TMD) and the neck disability index (NDI). (2) Three of 8 identified pain screening tests: visual analog scale (VAS), numeric pain rating scale (NRS) and pain during mandibular movements. (3) Eight of 18 identified physical examination tests: physiological temporomandibular joint (TMJ) movements, trigger point (TrP) palpation of the masticatory muscles, TrP palpation away from the masticatory system, accessory movements, articular palpation, noise detection during movement, manual screening of the cervical spine and the Neck Flexor Muscle Endurance Test. CONCLUSION: After three rounds in this Delphi survey, the results of the most used assessment tools by TMD PT experts were established. They proved to be founded on test construct, test psychometric properties (reliability/validity) and expert preference for test clusters. A concordance with the screening tools of the diagnostic criteria of TMD consortium was noted. Findings may be used to guide policymaking purposes and future diagnostic research.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Tests to evaluate the integrity of the alar ligaments are important clinical tools for manual therapists, but there is limited research regarding their validity. METHOD: A single blinded examiner assessed alar ligament integrity using the lateral shear test (LST), rotation stress test (RST) and side-bending stress test (SBST) on a sample of convenience comprising 7 subjects with MRI confirmed alar ligament lesions and 11 healthy people. Alar ligament lesions were identified using both supine and high-field strength upright MRI. RESULTS: The RST had a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 69.2%. The SBST and the LST both showed a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 76.9%. In cases where all three tests were positive, the specificity increased to 84.6%. DISCUSSION: Tests of manual examination of alar ligament integrity have some diagnostic utility; however, these findings require further corroboration in a larger sample.
