ABSTRACT
Osteoarthritis is the most common cause for hip pain. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) can relieve pain and enhance mobility and quality of life for patients with arthritic hip pain. The focus of this article is THA in patients with osteoarthritis using Mr. H's case as an illustration. It reviews indications and contraindications for THA and other treatment options as well as nursing care for patients undergoing THA.

Operating room renovation projects require planning and collaboration among physicians, hospital staff members, and vendors. Renovation involves many details, from how many electrical plugs to install in each OR to integration of the latest technologies. Details of a multiphase OR renovation project undertaken at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, MO, provide information and tools that any facility planning a renovation can use.

During the past 40 years, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures have improved patients' pain, functional status, and overall health-related quality of life. Improved instrumentation and implant designs enable surgeons to make precise bone resection incisions that have made this a safer and more routinely performed surgery. This article reviews traditional and minimally invasive approaches and best practices to help surgeons and perioperative staff members provide quality care to patients undergoing TKA.

Total hip arthroplasty procedures relieve patients' arthritic hip pain. Since the first procedure was performed in the 1960s, surgeons and implant companies have worked to improve prosthesis design, composition of implants, and the mechanisms for holding the implants in place. Recently, surgeons have focused on minimizing the surgical incision. Smaller incisions have resulted in smaller scars and faster recoveries. This article presents a brief historical overview of, as well as current trends in, minimally invasive total hip arthroplasty. All aspects of care for a patient undergoing total hip arthroplasty are discussed.

PERIOPERATIVE NURSES are using high-tech, pocket-sized, handheld computers to perform a variety of functions and enhance nursing practice. THIS ARTICLE GIVES an introduction to handheld technology and provides feature and cost comparisons. NURSES CAN USE built-in programs to keep procedure notes, pertinent telephone numbers, and a calendar. Optional reference programs of interest to health care workers number in the hundreds.
