ABSTRACT

Biogenic iron (Fe) (oxyhydr)oxides (BIOS) partially control the cycling of organic matter, nutrients, and pollutants in soils and water via sorption and redox reactions. Although recent studies have shown that the structure of BIOS resembles that of two-line ferrihydrite (2LFh), we lack detailed knowledge of the BIOS local coordination environment and structure required to understand the drivers of BIOS reactivity in redox active environments. Therefore, we used a combination of microscopy, scattering, and spectroscopic methods to elucidate the structure of BIOS sampled from a groundwater seep in North Carolina and compare them to 2LFh. We also simulated the effects of wet-dry cycles by varying sample preparation (e.g., freezing, flash freezing with freeze drying, freezing with freeze drying and oven drying). In general, the results show that both the long- and short-range ordering in BIOS are structurally distinct and notably more disordered than 2LFh. Our structure analysis, which utilized Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and pair distribution function analyses, showed that the BIOS samples were more poorly ordered than 2LFh and intimately mixed with organic matter. Furthermore, pair distribution function analyses resulted in coherent scattering domains for the BIOS samples ranging from 12-18 Å, smaller than those of 2LFh (21-27 Å), consistent with reduced ordering. Additionally, Fe L-edge XAS indicated that the local coordination environment of 2LFh samples consisted of minor amounts of tetrahedral Fe(III), whereas BIOS were dominated by octahedral Fe(III), consistent with depletion of the sites due to small domain size and incorporation of impurities (e.g., organic C, Al, Si, P). Within sample sets, the frozen freeze dried and oven dried sample preparation increased the crystallinity of the 2LFh samples when compared to the frozen treatment, whereas the BIOS samples remained more poorly crystalline under all sample preparations. This research shows that BIOS formed in circumneutral pH waters are poorly ordered and more environmentally stable than 2LFh.

ABSTRACT

Iron (oxyhydr)oxides are highly reactive, environmentally ubiquitous organic matter (OM) sorbents that act as mediators of terrestrial and aqueous OM cycling. However, current understanding of environmental iron (oxyhydr)oxide affinity for OM is limited primarily to abiogenic oxides. Bacteriogenic iron (oxyhydr)oxides (BIOs), common to quiescent waterways and soil redox transitions, possess a high affinity for oxyanions (i.e., arsenate and chromate) and suggests that BIOs may be similarly reactive for OM. Using adsorption and desorption batch reactions, paired with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, this work demonstrates that BIOs are capable of sorbing leaf litter-extracted DOM and Suwannee River Humic/Fulvic Acid (SRHA/SRFA) and have sorptive preference for distinct organic carbon compound classes at the biomineral interface. BIOs were found to sorb DOM and SRFA to half the extent of 2-line ferrihydrite per mass of sorbent and was resilient to desorption at high ionic strength and in the presence of a competitive ligand. We observed the preferential sorption of aromatic and carboxylic-containing species and concurrent solution enrichment of aliphatic groups unassociated with carboxylic acids. These findings suggest that DOM cycling may be significantly affected by BIOs, which may impact nutrient and contaminant transport in circumneutral environments.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The impact and burden of working with people that hoard is largely unexplored. AIM: To explore professionals' varied experiences of engagement and intervention with this client group. METHOD: Five semi-structured interviews were initially conducted with professionals with detailed experience of working with people that hoard. A thematic analysis then identified key statements for a 49-item Q-set. The Q-sort was subsequently administered to public sector professionals with wide experience of working with people who hoard (N= 36; fire-fighters, environmental health, housing and mental health). Organizational support and job-related wellbeing measures (anxiety/contentment and depression/enthusiasm) were also administered. RESULTS: Factor analysis identified three distinct clusters (a) therapeutic and client focused (N = 15), (b) shocked and frustrated (N = 2) and (c) pragmatic and task focused (N = 5). Therapeutic and client focused professionals were significantly more content and enthusiastic regarding their work with clients with hoarding difficulties. CONCLUSIONS: Professionals experience and approach their work with people that hoard in discrete and dissimilar ways. Service delivery and training implications are considered.

ABSTRACT

Multiple sclerosis is associated with high rates of depression. The extent to which this is related to living with chronic illness or part of the disease process remains unclear. This question was investigated by comparing rates of depression in MS with those in rheumatoid arthritis, which involves similar physical and psychosocial stressors but without central nervous system involvement. The study involved an on-line survey, which included measures of depression not confounded by somatic symptoms, medication use, self-reported physical functioning, pain, and other demographic variables. Results indicated that disease group (multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis) independently predicted depression above and beyond demographic and disease-related variables. Results support the hypothesis that depression in MS is partly determined by direct neurological consequences of the condition.

ABSTRACT

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is characterized by progressive skeletal muscle wasting and weakness, leading to premature death from respiratory and/or cardiac failure. A clinically relevant question is whether myostatin inhibition can improve function of the diaphragm, which exhibits a severe and progressive pathology comparable with that in DMD. We hypothesized that antibody-directed myostatin inhibition would improve the pathophysiology of diaphragm muscle strips from young mdx mice (when the pathology is mild) and adult mdx mice (when the pathology is quite marked). Five weeks treatment with a mouse chimera of anti-human myostatin antibody (PF-354, 10 mg/kg/week) increased muscle mass (P < 0.05) and increased diaphragm median fiber cross-sectional area (CSA, P < 0.05) in young C57BL/10 and mdx mice, compared with saline-treated controls. PF-354 had no effect on specific force (sPo, maximum force normalized to muscle CSA) of diaphragm muscle strips from young C57BL/10 mice, but increased sPo by 84% (P < 0.05) in young mdx mice. In contrast, 8 weeks of PF-354 treatment did not improve muscle mass, median fiber CSA, collagen infiltration, or sPo of diaphragm muscle strips from adult mdx mice. PF-354 antibody-directed myostatin inhibition completely restored the functional capacity of diaphragm strips to control levels when treatment was initiated early, but not in the later stages of disease progression, suggesting that such therapies may only have a limited window of efficacy for DMD and related conditions.
