ABSTRACT

Multichannel metasurfaces are becoming a significant trend in the field of optical encryption due to their excellent manipulation of optical wavefronts. However, existent multichannel metasurfaces for optical encryption mostly implement only two channels in the near-field, or three channels by combining the near- and far-field. In this paper, we propose and simulate a three-channel metasurface that works entirely in the near-field and uses the polarization state of the incident light, left circularly polarized (LCP) light, right circularly polarized (RCP) light, and linearly polarized (LP) light as the security key. The metasurface consists of two types of nanostructures that work as a polarizer and a quarter-wave plate, providing an additional degree of freedom for encoding that enables independent near-field display at 633 nm wavelength incident light. The proposed three-channel metasurface has the advantages of high information density and high security, which will pave the way for multi-channel applications such as ultracompact displays, optical encryption, and information storage.

ABSTRACT

Annexin A2 (ANXA2) encodes an oncoprotein whose expression has been found to correlate with poorer overall survival (OS) of pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD) patients. Although peptides are available for targeting ANXA2, none of these were initially selected to target this protein specifically. Here, we took ANXA2 as a molecular target for PAAD and employed the phage display technique to screen for a new ANXA2-targeted peptide. The resultant heptapeptide, YW7, was firstly labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) to evaluate its selectivity in cellular uptake, and further with the near-infrared fluorescent (NIRF) dye Cy7 to assess in vivo distribution in a mouse model bearing PANC-1 human pancreatic cancer xenografic tumors. We found that both FITC-YW7 and Cy7-YW7 probes showed significantly higher uptake in PANC-1 cells compared to the HPDE6-C7 pancreatic epithelium cells. Mice intravenously injected with Cy7-YW7 showed higher tumor-to-background ratios (TBRs) (~ 2.7-fold) in tumor tissues compared to those injected with Cy7 alone. Our study suggested that YW7 is a novel peptide targeting ANXA2 and Cy7-YW7 is an NIRF probe potentially useful for the early detection of PAAD.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Dieulafoy's lesion (DL) presented with small bowel bleeding constitutes a group of rare and potentially life-threatening prognosis. Several case series have described this condition, yet it remains unclear as to what is the optimal treatment and predicted outcome for patients who have been diagnosed. PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a 21-year-old male experiencing bloody stool for 1 day. DIAGNOSIS: Computed tomography of the abdomen exhibited active contrast extravasations and segmental wall thickening in the jejunum, and enteroscopy showed one 15-millimeter sized subepithelial tumor at the proximal jejunum. INTERVENTIONS: Due to unstable vital signs he received an emergent transcatheter arterial embolization, and surgeon performed a laparoscopic surgical resection thereafter under the impression of potential malignancy. The pathologist confirmed jejunal DL with organizing thrombus. OUTCOMES: He was discharged on the 8th day of hospitalization without recurrent bleeding. CONCLUSION: A systematic literature review of 98 published cases taken from PubMed dating back to 1978 was undertaken, and the patients with DL and small bowel bleeding involved mainly the jejunum, followed by the duodenum and ileum. Meanwhile, DL-related duodenal bleeding was diagnosed mostly by an enteroscopy, as well as endoscopic interventions. Jejunal and ileal bleeding due to DL was surveyed through endoscopy and surgery, while surgical resection remained the choice for bleeding cessation. Only anticoagulant use (OR = 18.16; P = .08) was associated with a higher risk of overall mortality, although it was non-significant in univariate analysis. We emphasize that individualized treatment as well as prompt measurement should be implemented accordingly.

ABSTRACT

The optical vortex (OV) beams characterized by orbital angular momentum (OAM) possess ubiquitous applications in optical communication and nanoparticle manipulation. Particularly, the vortex vector beams are important in classical physics and quantum sciences. Here, based on an all-dielectric transmission metasurface platform, we demonstrate a spin-multiplexed metadevice combining propagation phase and Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase. By utilizing a phase-only modulation method, the metadevice can generate spin-dependent and multidimensional focused optical vortex (FOV) under the orthogonally circularly polarized incident light, and it can successfully realize the multiplexed of the above-mentioned FOVs for linearly polarized light. Meanwhile, the superposition of multiple OAM states can also produce vector vortex beams with different modes. Additionally, the evolution process of the electric field intensity profile is presented after the resultant vector vortex beams through a horizontal linear polarization. This work paves an innovative way for generating structured beams, and it provides promising opportunities for advanced applications in optical data storage, optical micromanipulation, and data communication.

ABSTRACT

Metasurfaces, employed to simultaneously generate nanoprinting and holographic images, have been extensively explored recently. Among them, multi-wavelength multiplexing in a single metasurface is often accompanied by dispersion and crosstalk, which hinder the display of multicolor patterns. Here, we propose an efficient phase method to decouple the wavelength and realize a three-channel display operating at different wavelengths. Holographic images appear in the far field with the illumination of two different circularly polarized lights while a nanoprinting image is reconstructed by inserting an orthogonal optical path with the illumination of linear polarization light. The proposed metasurface is only composed of four types of unit cells, which significantly decreases the complexity of fabrication and improves the information capacity. Benefiting from its different decoding strategies and capability of multi-wavelength control, this approach may develop broad applications in information encryption, security, and color display.

ABSTRACT

Leucine-rich repeats and WD repeat domain containing protein 1 (LRWD1) is a testis-specific protein that mainly expressed in the sperm neck where centrosome is located. By using microarray analysis, LRWD1 is identified as a putative gene that involved in spermatogenesis. However, its role in human male germ cell development has not been extensively studied. When checking in the semen of patients with asthenozoospermia, teratozoospermia, and asthenoteratozoospermia, the level of LRWD1 in the sperm neck was significantly reduced with a defective neck or tail. When checking the sub-cellular localization of LRWD1 in the cells, we found that LRWD1 resided in the centrosome and its centrosomal residency was independent of microtubule transportation in NT2/D1, the human testicular embryonic carcinoma, cell line. Depletion of LRWD1 did not induce centrosome re-duplication but inhibited microtubule nucleation. In addition, the G1 arrest were observed in LRWD1 deficient NT2/D1 cells. Upon LRWD1 depletion, the levels of cyclin E, A, and phosphorylated CDK2, were reduced. Overexpression of LRWD1 promoted cell proliferation in NT2/D1, HeLa, and 239T cell lines. In addition, we also observed that autophagy was activated in LRWD1 deficient cells and inhibition of autophagy by chloroquine or bafilomycin A1 promoted cell death when LRWD1 was depleted. Thus, we found a novel function of LRWD1 in controlling microtubule nucleation and cell cycle progression in the human testicular embryonic carcinoma cells. J. Cell.
