ABSTRACT

A palladium-catalyzed interannular C-H amination of biaryl amines with O-benzoylhydroxylamines is reported. This reaction undergoes smoothly with operational practicality and good tolerance of functional groups, thereby providing a concise synthesis of 2,2'-diaminobiaryls. Moreover, the readily accessible scale-up synthesis and the ability to transform the products into structurally diverse N-containing heterocycles demonstrate the synthetic potential of this catalytic protocol.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Patients with diabetes who have poor health literacy about the disease may exhibit poor compliance and thus subsequently experience more complications. However, the conceptual gap of diabetes between health providers and the general population is still not well understood. Decoding concerns about diabetes on social media may help to close this gap. METHODS: Social media data were collected from the OpView social media platform. After checking the quality of the data, we analyzed the trends in people's discussions on the internet using text mining. The natural language process includes word segmentation, word counting and counting the relationships between the words. A word cloud was developed, and clustering analyses were performed. RESULTS: There were 19,565 posts about diabetes collected from forums, community websites, and Q&A websites in the summer (June, July, and August) of 2017. The three most popular aspects of diabetes were diet (33.2%), life adjustment (21.2%), and avoiding complications (15.6%). Most discussions about diabetes were negative. The negative/positive ratios of the top three aspects were avoiding complications (7.60), problem solving (4.08), and exercise (3.97). In terms of diet, the most popular topics were Chinese medicine and special diet therapy. In terms of life adjustment, financial issues, weight reduction, and a less painful glucometer were discussed the most. Furthermore, sexual dysfunction, neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy were the most worrisome issues in avoiding complications. Using text mining, we found that people care most about sexual dysfunction. Health providers care about the benefits of exercise in diabetes care, but people are mostly concerned about sexual functioning. CONCLUSION: A conceptual gap between health providers and the network population existed in this real-world social media investigation. To spread healthy diabetic education concepts in the media, health providers might wish to provide more information related to the network population's actual areas of concern, such as sexual function, Chinese medicine, and weight reduction.

ABSTRACT

Using Cr(vi) as the imprinted ions and 2-allyl-1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedione (ADPD) (a compound synthesized by independent design) as the functional monomer, a series of chromium ion-imprinted composite membranes (Cr(vi)-IICMs) and corresponding non-imprinted composite membranes (NICMs) were synthesized and tested. The results showed that the Cr(vi)-IICM10 membrane prepared under optimal experimental conditions exhibited a high adsorption capacity towards Cr(vi) (Q = 30.35 mg g-1) and a high imprinting factor (α = 2.70). The structural characteristics of Cr(vi)-IICM10 and NICM10 were investigated using FE-SEM, ATR-FTIR, and BET techniques combined with UV-Vis photometry and inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) to evaluate the adsorption performance and permeation selectivity, while the effect on adsorption permeance of varying the experimental conditions including the solvent type, pH, and temperature was also investigated. The results showed that Cr(vi)-IICM10 is a mesoporous material with excellent permeation selectivity, reusability, and favorable pH response, and that its adsorption behavior is in accordance with the Langmuir model and pseudo-first-order kinetics. Thus, Cr(vi)-IICM10 shows great potential towards utilization as a "smart membrane" to control the separation and removal of Cr(vi) in wastewater, and also proved a reasonable design of the new functional monomer ADPD.

ABSTRACT

Developing efficient all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) has always been a long-standing challenge due to the unfavorable morphology caused by conventional blend casting (BC). Here, we first employ the methodology of sequential processing (SP) with nonorthogonal solvents to fabricate facilely all-PSCs. A highly crystalline polymer donor, PBDB-T, is used to construct a well-organized underlying film, while a new polymer, FPDI-BT1, is selected as the acceptor to be intercalated into the amorphous or semicrystalline regions of PBDB-T during the secondary deposition. By tuning the solvent composition for FPDI-BT1 processing, a bulk heterojunction-like configuration, rather than a traditional bilayer device, is obtained facilely without the need of further processing treatment. The extremely boosted power conversion efficiency of 7.15% from the SP device is achieved, which is more than twice as efficient as the BC analogue (3.57%). The results demonstrate that SP is a promising strategy to fabricate high-performance all-PSCs with tunable configurations of active layers.

ABSTRACT

We report on the use of an electronic microarray to simultaneously type influenza A and B viruses and to distinguish influenza A virus subtypes H1N1 and H3N2 from the potentially pandemic avian virus subtype H5N1. The assay targets seven genes: the H1, H3, H5, N1, and N2 genes of influenza A virus; the matrix protein M1 gene of influenza A virus; and the nonstructural protein (NS) gene of influenza B virus. By combining a two-step reverse transcription-multiplex PCR with typing and subtyping on the electronic microarray, the assay achieved an analytical sensitivity of 10(2) to 10(3) copies of transcripts per reaction for each of the genes. The assay correctly typed and subtyped 15 different influenza virus isolates, including two influenza B virus, five A/H1N1, six A/H3N2, and two A/H5N1 isolates. In addition, the assay correctly identified 8 out of 10 diluted, archived avian influenza virus specimens with complete typing and subtyping information and 2 specimens with partial subtyping information. In a study of 146 human clinical specimens that had previously been shown to be positive for influenza virus or another respiratory virus, the assay showed a clinical sensitivity of 96% and a clinical specificity of 100%. The assay is a rapid, accurate, user-friendly method for simultaneously typing and subtyping influenza viruses.

ABSTRACT

The possible existence of less common hydrogen bonds in three lariat ethers and their alkali-metal ionic complexes have been investigated with one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) proton and carbon-13 high resolution liquid state NMR spectroscopy. The occurrence of hydrogen-bonding induced by the addition of metal ions has been identified with the observation of indirect dipolar coupling between the coupling partners involved in the hydrogen-bonding. The addition of metal ions, moreover, causes appreciable change of chemical shift of several protons and carbons. The chemical shift change depends on the ion radius, larger ions causing smaller change. Moreover, the change of chemical shift is in coincidence with the occurrence of hydrogen-bonding. The values of the coupling constants have been obtained for each of these hydrogen bonds and were used for evaluating the hydrogen-bond strength. An intriguing and surprising observation is that a C-H***O hydrogen bond identified in solution by this work was not found in the previous study with X-ray diffraction or other methods.
