ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to investigate how the drug release and FT-IR characteristics of metolose patches were influenced by the changes of Metolose SM 4000 (methylcellulose) and Metolose 90SH 100.000SR (hypromellose) proportions. FT-IR spectroscopy measurements were performed in parallel with the metoprolol tartrate release study to track the effect of the composition on the drug release. The metoprolol tartrate release profile of the patches was evaluated by Weibull distribution. Linear relationship was found with good correlation between the logarithm of time interval necessary to release 63.2% of metoprolol tartrate (tau(d) values) and the peak area measured within the characteristic FT-IR wavenumbers of patches. The application of FT-IR measurements can be recommended as a rapid, non-destructive screening method during the in-process control of patches.

ABSTRACT

Application of counterfeit medicines is extremely dangerous, because neither their quality, nor their efficacy and the circumstances of their preparation are known. The most effective and well-known fight against counterfeit medicines is the assurance of closed medicine supply chain. In the present study beside the review of the anti-counterfeiting technologies, combined oral contraceptives purchased out of pharmacy were examined from the point of counterfeiting. Based on the results of the study it could be concluded that the medicines contained the correct ingredients, but the examined products were not marketing authorized in Hungary.

ABSTRACT

Nowadays infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics have proven their effectiveness for both qualitative and quantitative analyses in different fields like agriculture, food, chemical and oil industry. Furier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) combined with Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) plate is a fast identification instrument. It is suitable for analysis of solid and liquid phase, too. Associated with chemometrics, it would be a powerful tool for the pharmaceutical wholesalers to detect the insufficient quality of pharmaceutical ingredients. In the present study beside the review of the infra red technology, pharmaceutical ingredients were examined with the help of our spectra library.
