ABSTRACT

Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is a prevalent disease with various negative consequences. The lived experience of coping and recovery of a patient with Chronic hepatitis B was explored in this study. A semistructured interview was conducted with one participant who had been recovered from Chronic hepatitis B for 10 years. Data were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Five superordinate themes emerged, including lingering in the shadow of death anxiety, diminished functioning of the self, adopting a highly disciplined lifestyle, receiving social support, and the return of the self with scars. The findings revealed that the disease is deeply associated with moral standing, which means the diagnosis of Chronic hepatitis B might imply a loss of moral face for Chinese people living with the condition. Our findings point to the need for increasing knowledge about chronic hepatitis B, decoupling the disease from a moral standpoint, and providing a supportive environment.

ABSTRACT

Universal prevention is a practical approach to preventing depressive symptoms in adolescents, but barriers might reduce its effectiveness. This study explored possible barriers to universal prevention of depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescents. We interviewed thirteen adolescents who participated in the program. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. The results revealed three categories of barriers. The first category was participants' maladaptive coping strategies and beliefs about negative emotions. They tended to use avoidance coping, did not believe that negative emotions can be regulated, and had an unrealistic wish for a quick fix. The second category originated from the prevention contents. The complexity of the psychological techniques and the lack of proficiency among the participants were important barriers. The third category was the setting of the psychological course. Participants were reluctant to invest cognitive effort in the psychological course. The large-size class also made it challenging to have an in-depth exploration into emotions and thoughts. Our study added to the existing literature by providing more knowledge of barriers to universal prevention. Future research and practice need to adequately address these barriers so that universal prevention can be conducted more effectively.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationships between proactive personality, clinical learning environment, career adaptability and self-perceived employability in nursing college students based on the career construction model. DESIGN: The study employed a cross-sectional research design. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: A purposive and convenience sampling of 405 final year nursing college students were invited to finish online survey. Structural equation modeling has been utilized to perform the measurement and structural model assessment and bootstrapping approach is employed to perform the mediation test. RESULTS: Students' proactive personality was positively related to their career adaptability (Beta=0.45, p < 0.001), and self-perceived employability (Beta=0.26, p < 0.001), clinical learning environment was positively related to career adaptability (Beta=0.14, p < 0.1) and self-perceived employability (Beta=0.43, p < 0.001), career adaptability was positively related to self-perceived employability (Beta=0.33, p < 0.001). Moreover, career adaptability significantly mediated the relationship between proactive personality and perceived employability, but it failed to mediate the relationship between clinical learning environment and perceived employability. CONCLUSIONS: For nursing college students, both clinical learning environment and proactive personality had a positive impact on their self-perceived employability, and career adaptability also mediated the relationship between proactive personality and perceived employability. Appropriate interventions may be implemented to enhance nursing college students' perceived employability.
