ABSTRACT

Catastrophic disasters occur frequently in recent years, resulting in a large number of casualties. Thus, more and more scholars begin to focus on a newly emerged displine-rescue medicine. This paper introduces the status quo of rescue medicine and expounds the practical experience related to rescue medicine as practiced by author's unit, in order to provide a reference for the establishment of the discipline and its future development.

ABSTRACT

This study compares the serological markers between runners who are hepatitis B virus carries (HBVc) and runners who are non-HBVc in a 100-km ultra-marathon race. Blood samples of 8 HBVc and 18 non-HBVc runners were drawn 1 week before, immediately following, and 24 h after the race. Samples were analyzed and compared between the 2 groups for liver function tests, muscle damage markers and oxidative stress cytokines. For HBVc runners, HBV-DNA (hepatitis B virus-deoxyribonucleic acid) levels were also evaluated for virus reactivation. The results demonstrate a statistically significant increase in both immediate and 24-h post-race values for alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), compared with pre-race values. No statistically significant difference was observed between the 2 groups for the values of AST, LDH, CK, hs-CRP, IL-6 and TNF-α either before or after the race. There was also no statistically significant change in the levels of HBV-DNA in HBVc runners. These findings suggest that HBVc runners do not have higher risks of liver function impairment, muscle breakdown and inflammatory response compared to non-HBVc runners in such endurance races.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To investigate the possible role endothelin may play in the pathogenesis of varicocele and varicocele-induced infertility. METHODS: In varicocele patients, radioimmunoassay is used to determine the blood endothelin concentration in the spermatic vein and the antecubital vein separately. RESULTS: The blood endothelin concentration of the spermatic vein (66.8 +/- 23.5 pg/mL) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that of the antecubital vein (55.3 +/- 25.3 pg/mL). The endothelin concentration in the spermatic vein in Grade II varicocele patients was not significantly different from that in Grade III patients (P = 0.87). CONCLUSION: The higher blood endothelin level in the spermatic vein may indicate the involvement of endothelin in the pathophysiology of varicocele and varicocele-induced infertility.

ABSTRACT

84 suspected patients with gonococcal urethritis were diagnosed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). It was demonstrated that 28 patients (33.3%) were positive, and 56 (66.7%) negative. Of the PCR-positive patients, 18 showed secretions from the urethral tract, on which the bacterial stain and culture were carried out. The results indicate that 12 patients were positive, and 6 negative. There was no patient with positive stain and culture with PCR-negative. We conclude that PCR is more specific and sensitive than other routine methods in the diagnosis of gonococcal urethritis, especially of chronic infection.

ABSTRACT

34 cases of retrocaval ureter of our country, including 2 of our hospital, were studied. The embryologic pathology, diagnosis and treatment of the disorder are discussed. The choice of operative methods and 'vena cava supporter' are also described.

ABSTRACT

Using two-color immunofluorescence with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)- and phycoerythrin (PE)-labeled monoclonal antibodies to human lymphocyte antigens and flow cytometry, we studied lymphocyte subsets in 16 long-term renal allotransplant recipients at risk for a mean of 78 +/- 15 mo. The absolute number of Leu-1+, Leu-2a+, and Leu-3a+ lymphocytes is significantly decreased compared with a control population, whereas Leu-7+ and Leu-15+ subsets remain unchanged despite standard chronic immunosuppression (azathioprine and prednisone). Within the Leu-7+ subset, we found various phenotypes. Doubly fluorescent lymphocytes Leu-7+/Leu-1+ and Leu-7+/Leu-2a+ are not significantly different in the transplant population compared with a normal control population. The Leu-7+/Leu-3a+ subpopulation is seen to be significantly elevated, and the Leu-7+/Leu-15+ subpopulation decreases significantly. The relationship between the modification of these two phenotypes within the Leu-7 subset may be an important correlate of decreased NK cell activity in long-term renal allotransplant recipients. These Leu-7+/Leu-3a+ cells, normally less than 1% of peripheral blood lymphocytes, have no known functional activity.
