ABSTRACT

A questionnaire was used to assess the attitude of family members in Jordan to the state of their teeth, their personal oral hygiene and their acceptance of dental care. The questions were formulated to provide information without the need for dental examination. In industrial societies there is evidence of a reduction in the rate of dental decay whereas in countries such as Jordan the reverse is true. Consideration of this trend, in combination with the results of this survey, provides a strong indication that instruction in oral hygiene must be given together with increased facilities for treatment.

ABSTRACT

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the anxiety disorders recently included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition (DSM-III).(1) The disorder refers to the psychological sequelae that may follow a significant stressor. The military has previously referred to PTSD as "war neurosis," "shell shock," and "combat neurosis."PTSD has recently gained attention as a means of legal defense. As a defense, it may exist separately from "innocence by reason of insanity." The authors review the literature, provide case vignettes exemplifying the clinical features, and present three additional cases that gained local and national notoriety because of their defense motions. The senior author served as an expert witness in these cases. Recommendations are given to readers who may in the future serve as expert witnesses or consultants in similar cases.

ABSTRACT

The psychosomatic disorder termed Munchausen's syndrome has gained official recognition in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, in which it is referred to as a "chronic factitious disorder with physical symptoms." Sporadic case reports have been published over the years. Few patients with this disorder allow themselves to be psychologically evaluated or seek treatment for the disorder itself. We report here an unusual case in which a young woman sought help for her hospital-peregrinating behavior.

ABSTRACT

Pre-prosthetic surgery is but an aid to good prosthetics and patients requiring it are often elderly and/or infirm. Prosthetic requirements should govern both the design and the amount of surgery undertaken to facilitate the insertion of a satisfactory and successful denture. The manner in which the author relates his practice to these concepts is described.
