ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the associations between a combined healthy lifestyle during the second and third trimesters and offspring anthropometric outcomes in China. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: We examined these associations among 548 participants from nine community health centers and three hospitals in the North China cohort. A pregnant women's healthy lifestyle score (HLS) was constructed based on six lifestyle factors: smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, sedentary behavior, diet, and gestational weight gain. Anthropometric indicators at birth like birth weight (BW), head circumference (HC), and birth length (BL) were collected, and weight to head circumference ratio (WHC, kg/m), body mass index (BMI, kg/m2) and Ponderal Index (PI, kg/m3) were calculated. Multivariate linear and logistic regression models were used to examine the effects of HLS during the second and third trimesters on anthropometric outcomes at birth, respectively. RESULTS: In fully adjusted models, we found a negative association between second and third-trimester HLS and offspring HC and a positive relationship between second-trimester HLS and BL (p<0.05). Neonates with mothers in the highest HLS tertile had a 5.6% relatively lower HC and 2.3% relatively longer body length than women in the lowest tertile. Each additional unit in third-trimester HLS had an associated decrease in HC by 0.96 cm. None of the associations between HLS and BW, WHC, BMI, and PI of offspring were observed. CONCLUSIONS: A healthy lifestyle score may significantly impact offspring head circumference and body length, supporting the important role of healthy lifestyles in improving the health of offspring.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore the dose-effect and mechanism of the protective effect of corn peptide(CP) on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD). METHODS: Seventy male SD rats were randomly divided into control group, model group, CP group, puerarin positive control group, low-, medium-, high-dose corn peptide group, the experiment started after 1 week of adaptive feeding. The control group and CP group were fed with ordinary feed and others were fed with high-fat feed, while the control group was given intragastric administration of purified water, the CP group and the low-, medium-, high-dose corn peptide group were given intragastric administration of corn peptide(800, 400, 600 and 800 mg/(kg·d), respectively), and the puerarin positive control group was given intragastric administration of 300 mg/(kg·d) of puerarin, for 10 weeks. The body weight and general condition of rats were recorded every week, after 10 weeks, the indexes of 7 groups were compared. RESULTS: Compared with the model group, the liver index(3.67, 3.29, 3.19 and 3.04, P<0.05) of the rats in the three doses of corn peptide groups decreased. The homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance(13.66, 11.82, 11.55 and 10.53, P<0.05) decreased. The serum triglyceride(TG)(0.59, 0.42, 0.34 and 0.28, P<0.05), total cholesterol(TC)(2.57, 2.10, 1.67 and 1.46, P<0.05), free fatty acid(FFA)(0.66, 0.44, 0.40 and 0.36, P<0.05), and leptin(10.64, 9.87, 9.43 and 9.05, P<0.05) decreased. The serum interleukin-6(74.61, 61.66, 51.12 and 35.68, P<0.05) and tumor necrosis factor-α(100.18, 74.13, 67.44 and 48.46, P<0.05) decreased. The serum aspartate aminotransferase(41.38, 19.41, 14.98 and 8.44, P<0.05) and alanine aminotransferase(25.14, 13.10, 11.57 and 7.48, P<0.05) activity decreased. The liver TG(9.89, 5.55, 4.73 and 3.13, P<0.05), TC(1.73, 0.97, 0.80 and 0.50, P<0.05) and FFA(1.81, 1.11, 0.77 and 0.70, P<0.05) decreased. The serum malondialdehyde(MDA)(21.36, 15.24, 12.75 and 10.87, P<0.05) level and liver MDA(11.87, 8.27, 6.33 and 4.98, P<0.05) level decreased. The serum and liver superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activity increased(P<0.05), and the effect is related to the intervention dose of corn peptide. The size of the liver became smaller, the liver color gradually changed from light yellow to light red. CONCLUSION: Corn peptide has a certain preventive effect on NAFLD in rats, and the preventive effect of corn peptide is related to its intervention dose.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we have used the one-pot polycondensation method to prepare novel 2D conjugated microporous polymers (Th-F-CMP) containing thiophene (Th) and fluorene (Fl) moieties through the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) data revealed that Th-F-CMP (Td10 = 418 °C, char yield: 53 wt%). Based on BET analyses, the Th-F-CMP sample displayed a BET specific surface area of 30 m2 g-1, and the pore size was 2.61 nm. Next, to show the effectiveness of our study, we utilized Th-F-CMP as a fluorescence probe for the selective detection of Fe3+ ions at neutral pH with a linear range from 2.0 to 25.0 nM (R2 = 0.9349). Furthermore, the electrochemical experimental studies showed that the Th-F-CMP framework had a superior specific capacity of 84.7 F g-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1 and outstanding capacitance retention (88%) over 2000 cycles.

ABSTRACT

Pregnant women are more susceptible to smog pollution than the general population. This study focused on the association between smog and birth outcomes, considering both pregnant mothers and their offspring. In this retrospective study, conducted in Baoding between 2013 and 2016, we enrolled 842 participants. Birth outcomes were low birth weight (LBW), pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and premature rupture of membranes (PROM). The overall prevalence of LBW, PIH, GDM, and PROM was 8.2%, 14.8%, 16.5%, and 12.1%, respectively. Compared with lower pollution level, higher pollution level of fine particulate matter (particulate matter with aerodynamics diameter <2.5 µm) (PM2.5), inhalable particle (particulate matter with aerodynamics diameter <10 µm) (PM10), and CO increased the risk of term with LBW. PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 increased the risk of PIH during different trimesters, while PM10 increased the risk of PROM during trimester 3. In conclusion, smog significantly affects the risk of adverse birth outcomes by different exposure time windows.

ABSTRACT

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants could induce immune escape by mutations of the spike protein which are threatening to weaken vaccine efficacy. A booster vaccination is expected to increase the humoral immune response against SARS-CoV-2 variants in the population. We showed that immunization with two doses of wild type receptor-binding domain (RBD) protein, and booster vaccination with wild type or variant RBD protein all significantly increased binding and neutralizing antibody titers against wild type SARS-CoV-2 and its variants in mice. Only the booster immunization by Omicron (BA.1)RBD induced a strong antibody titer against the omicron virus strain and comparable antibody titers against all the other virus strains. These findings might shed the light on coronavirus disease 2019 booster immunogens.

ABSTRACT

Nutrition screening to identify patients at risk of malnutrition is vital for cancer patients because of the high prevalence of malnutrition in this population. The aim of the present study was to compare different methods of nutrition assessment in patients with tumors. From June 2013 to June 2014, we conducted an observational multicenter study to compare the assessment of nutritional status in patients with tumors by anthropometry, biochemical indicators, nutritional risk screening (NRS-2002) and patient-generated subjective global assessment (PG-SGA). Mann-Whitney test and Kruskal-Wallis H non-parametric test were used for intergroup comparisons. Spearmans rank correlation coefficients were calculated to evaluate the association between different methods of nutritional assessment. The κ statistic was used to evaluate the agreement between two assessment methods. A total of 927 oncology inpatients underwent full nutritional assessment and nutrition screening. The PG-SGA tool determined that 13.7% of patients were well-nourished (PG-SGA from 0-1) and the rest (86.3%) were malnourished. Among the malnourished patients, 57.8% were moderately malnourished (PG-SGA from 2-8) and 28.5% were severely malnourished (PG-SGA ≥9). According to NRS-2002, 30.7% of patients were at nutritional risk (NRS-2002 ≥3). There was a significant positive correlation between PG-SGA scores and NRS-2002 scores in both men and women. Compared to albumin, the PG-SGA had a sensitivity of 93.78% and specificity of 21.80%. In comparison, NRS-2002 had a low sensitivity of 43.13% and relatively higher specificity of 82.16%. In conclusion, the relationship between PG-SGA, NRS-2002 and nutritional status is statistically significant. Compared with NRS-2002, PG-SGA is a suitable screening tool for detecting the risk of malnutrition in patients with cancer.

ABSTRACT

Soil pollution in China is one of most wide and severe in the world. Although environmental researchers are well aware of the acuteness of soil pollution in China, a precise and comprehensive mapping system of soil pollution has never been released. By compiling, integrating and processing nearly a decade of soil pollution data, we have created cornerstone maps that illustrate the distribution and concentration of cadmium, lead, zinc, arsenic, copper and chromium in surficial soil across the nation. These summarized maps and the integrated data provide precise geographic coordinates and heavy metal concentrations; they are also the first ones to provide such thorough and comprehensive details about heavy metal soil pollution in China. In this study, we focus on some of the most polluted areas to illustrate the severity of this pressing environmental problem and demonstrate that most developed and populous areas have been subjected to heavy metal pollution.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To analyze the effect of porcelain dental restoration combined with labial surface root filling for the anterior teeth. METHODS: One hundred cases with anterior teeth protrusion treated in our department from January 2010 to January 2014 underwent porcelain dental restoration combined with labial surface root filling. The measurements in cephalometric X-ray films before and after treatment were compared, and porcelain dental appearance and function were evaluated. The data was statistically analyzed with SPSS18.0 software package. RESULTS: After treatment, U1-SN, U1-X, U1-Y were significantly lower than before treatment (P<0.01). U1-L1 was significantly higher after treatment (P<0.01). The incidence of gingivitis after treatment decreased significantly (X(2)=16.2749,P=0.0000<0.01). The excellent rate of outline of porcelain teeth after treatment, correction of protruding anterior teeth, fitting with adjacent teeth and alleviation of deep overbite and deep cover was 96.00%, 95.00%, 98.00% and 91.00%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Porcelain dental restoration after root canal treatment can effectively improve anterior teeth protrusion and increase the aesthetic appearance, which is worthy of clinical application.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: We aimed to study the prevalence of overweight and obesity and to assess its familial clustering among schoolchildren in northern China. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 95,292 schoolchildren in northern China to investigate the prevalence of overweight and obesity. A group of overweight and obese children (n = 450) was selected using a cluster sampling method. Answers from a questionnaire on their and their families' nutrition and behaviors were recorded and analyzed statistically. RESULTS: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in schoolchildren was 27.4% and 13.2%, respectively. The prevalence of overweight and obesity were significantly higher in boys than in girls. The prevalence of familial clustering of overweight and obesity was 75.3% and 20.3%, respectively. The prevalence of overweight in first-generation (parents) and second-generation (grandparents) relatives was 54.6% and 53.1%, respectively. There was a linear trend toward correlation between age and the rates of overweight and obesity. The familial clustering of obesity with family income reached statistical significance. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of overweight and obesity was extremely high, especially among boys and their fathers. Evidence of familial clustering of overweight and obesity among schoolchildren and their parental family members in northern China is emerging.
