ABSTRACT

Few-shot object detection (FSOD), which detects novel objects with only a few training instances, has recently attracted more attention. Previous works focus on making the most use of label information of objects. Still, they fail to consider the structural and semantic information of the image itself and solve the misclassification between data-abundant base classes and data-scarce novel classes efficiently. In this article, we propose FSOD with Self-Supervising and Cooperative Classifier ( [Formula: see text]) approach to deal with those concerns. Specifically, we analyze the underlying performance degradation of novel classes in FSOD and discover that false-positive samples are the main reason. By looking into these false-positive samples, we further notice that misclassifying novel classes as base classes are the main cause. Thus, we introduce double RoI heads into the existing Fast-RCNN to learn more specific features for novel classes. We also consider using self-supervised learning (SSL) to learn more structural and semantic information. Finally, we propose a cooperative classifier (CC) with the base-novel regularization to maximize the interclass variance between base and novel classes. In the experiment, [Formula: see text] outperforms all the latest baselines in most cases on PASCAL VOC and COCO.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Hypertension seems to inevitably cause cardiac remodeling, increasing the mortality of patients. This study aimed to explore the molecular mechanism of CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein delta (CEBPD)-mediated oxidative stress and inflammation in hypertensive cardiac remodeling. The hypertensive murine model was established through angiotensin-II injection, and hypertensive mice underwent overexpressed CEBPD vector injection, cardiac function evaluation, and observation of histological changes. The cell model was established by angiotensin-II treatment and transfected with overexpressed CEBPD vector. Cell viability and surface area and oxidative stress (reactive oxygen species/superoxide dismutase/lactate dehydrogenase/malondialdehyde) were assessed, and inflammatory factors (TNF-α/IL-1ß/IL-6/IL-10) were determined both in vivo and in vitro . The levels of CEBPD, miR-96-5p, inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor 1 (IP3R), natriuretic peptide B, and natriuretic peptide A, collagen I, and collagen III in tissues and cells were determined. The binding relationships of CEBPD/miR-96-5p/IP3R 3' untranslated region were validated. CEBPD was reduced in cardiac tissue of hypertensive mice, and CEBPD upregulation improved cardiac function and attenuated fibrosis and hypertrophy, along with reductions of reactive oxygen species/lactate dehydrogenase/malondialdehyde/TNF-α/IL-1ß/IL-6 and increases in superoxide dismutase/IL-10. CEBPD enriched on the miR-96-5p promoter to promote miR-96-5p expression, whereas CEBPD and miR-96-5p negatively regulated IP3R. miR-96-5p silencing/IP3R overexpression reversed the alleviative role of CEBPD overexpression in hypertensive mice. In summary, CEBPD promoted miR-96-5p to negatively regulate IP3R expression to inhibit oxidative stress and inflammation, thereby alleviating hypertensive cardiac remodeling.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Clinical tissue adhesives remain some critical drawbacks for managing emergency injuries, such as inadequate adhesive strength and insufficient anti-infection ability. Herein, a novel, self-healing, and antibacterial carboxymethyl chitosan/polyaldehyde dextran (CMCS/PD) hydrogel is designed as the first-aid tissue adhesive for effective trauma emergency management. METHODS: We examined the gel-forming time, porosity, self-healing, antibacterial properties, cytotoxicity, adhesive strength, and hemocompatibility. Liver hemorrhage, tail severance, and skin wound infection models of rats are constructed in vivo, respectively. RESULTS: Results demonstrate that the CMCS/PD hydrogel has the rapid gel-forming (~ 5 s), good self-healing, and effective antibacterial abilities, and could adhere to tissue firmly (adhesive strength of ~ 10 kPa and burst pressure of 327.5 mmHg) with excellent hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility. This suggests the great prospect of CMCS/PD hydrogel in acting as a first-aid tissue adhesive for trauma emergency management. The CMCS/PD hydrogel is observed to not only achieve rapid hemostasis for curing liver hemorrhage and tail severance in comparison to commercial hemostatic gel (Surgiflo ®) but also exhibit superior anti-infection for treating acute skin trauma compared with clinical disinfectant gel (Prontosan ®). CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the CMCS/PD hydrogel offers a promising candidate for first-aid tissue adhesives to manage the trauma emergency. Because of the rapid gel-forming time, it could also be applied as a liquid first-aid bandage for mini-invasive surgical treatment.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Postoperative complications are important clinical outcomes for colon cancer patients. This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of inflammatory-nutritional indicators combined with computed tomography body composition on postoperative complications in patients with stage II-III colon cancer. METHODS: We retrospectively collected data from patients with stage II-III colon cancer admitted to our hospital from 2017 to 2021, including 198 patients in the training cohort and 50 patients in the validation cohort. Inflammatory-nutritional indicators and body composition were included in the univariate and multivariate analyses. Binary regression was used to develop a nomogram and evaluate its predictive value. RESULTS: In the multivariate analysis, the monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), nutritional risk score (NRS), skeletal muscle index (SMI), and visceral fat index (VFI) were independent risk factors for postoperative complications of stage II-III colon cancer. In the training cohort, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the predictive model was 0.825 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.764-0.886). In the validation cohort, it was 0.901 (95% CI 0.816-0.986). The calibration curve showed that the prediction results were in good agreement with the observational results. Decision curve analysis showed that colon cancer patients could benefit from the predictive model. CONCLUSIONS: A nomogram combining MLR, SII, NRS, SMI, and VFI with good accuracy and reliability in predicting postoperative complications in patients with stage II-III colon cancer was established, which can help guide treatment decisions.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the ultrasonographic classification of fetal umbilical-portal-systemic venous shunts (UPSVS) and the correlations with fetal chromosomal abnormalities. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the ultrasound characteristics and the corresponding chromosomal abnormalities of 26 cases of fetal UPSVS prenatally diagnosed. RESULTS: A total of 26 fetuses diagnosed as UPSVS were included, including four cases of type I UPSVS, ten of type II, three of type IIIA, and nine of type IIIB. Four cases of type I were all complicated by fetal heart enlargement and heart insufficiency, of which one case had multiple malformations, and all four cases terminated pregnancies. Six of ten cases of type II terminated pregnancies, including four of Down's syndrome, one of twin reversed arterial perfusion sequence, one of fetal edema but with normal copy number variation (CNV) by chorionic villus sampling. The other four of ten cases were isolated type II with normal chromosomes, which were delivered at full term and were normal in growth and development when followed up 34 months after birth. Three cases of type IIIA all terminated pregnancies, of which one had multiple malformations, one had right multicystic dysplastic kidney, and one had fetal heart enlargement and heart failure. Among nine of type IIIB, seven with chromosomal abnormalities and/ or complicated malformations terminated pregnancies, and two with isolated type IIIB and normal chromosomes were delivered at full term, and were normal in growth and development (one was followed up to 33 months after birth and the other 20 months after birth). CONCLUSION: Fetal UPSVS can be clearly diagnosed and typed by prenatal ultrasonography. Fetal prognosis is determined by the types of UPSVS and complicated malformations and/ or chromosomal abnormalities. The probability of fetal chromosomal abnormalities in UPSVS fetuses is related to the ultrasonographic classification.

ABSTRACT

We explored the predictive value of various inflammatory-nutritional indicators for postoperative quality of life (QoL) in gastric cancer (GC) patients undergoing laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (LDG) and developed a novel inflammatory-nutritional score (INS). In this study, 156 GC patients who underwent LDG were included. We used multiple linear regression to analyze the correlation between postoperative QoL and inflammatory-nutritional indicators. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression analysis was performed to construct INS. Hemoglobin was positively correlated with physical functioning (ß =8.5; p = 0.003) and cognitive functioning (ß = 3.5; p = 0.038) 3 mo, after surgery. Prognostic nutritional index (PNI) was positively associated with global health status (ß =5.8; p = 0.043). Albumin-alkaline phosphatase ratio (AAPR) was negatively correlated with emotional functioning 12 mo, after surgery (ß = -5.7; p = 0.024). Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), Lymphocyte- monocyte ratio (LMR), AAPR, hemoglobin and PNI were selected using LASSO regression analysis to construct INS. The C-index values of the model in the training group and the validation group were 0.806 (95% CI, 0.719-0.893) and 0.758 (95% CI: 0.591-0.925), respectively. INS had particular predictive value for postoperative QoL in patients undergoing LDG and provided a reference for risk stratification and clinical practice.

PURPOSE: To determine whether transection of the hernia sac during laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal hernia repair (TAPP) affects the occurrence of seroma, and to explore the risk factors for seroma. METHODS: In total, 330 consecutive male patients with indirect inguinal hernia who underwent TAPP repair at the Qingdao University Affiliated Hospital from January 2020 to June 2021 were retrospectively enrolled in this study. According to the intraoperative hernia sac treatment, patients were divided into a completely reduced sac group and a transected sac group. RESULTS: Among the 330 inguinal hernia male patients, 240 received hernia sac reduction and 90 received hernia sac transection. Fifty-four patients developed seroma, with an incidence of 16.4%. In patients with a hernia defect measuring ≥3 cm and extension into the scrotum, the difference in the incidence of seroma between the two treatment groups approached significance (P = 0.052). The risk factors for seroma, high body mass index, hernia sac ≥3 cm, extension of the hernia into the scrotum and operation time were significantly associated with postoperative seroma. CONCLUSION: This study showed that the incidence of seroma after TAPP was as high as 16.4%. For patients with a hernia sac that is too large and descended extends into the scrotum, transection may be better than complete dissection of the hernia sac and preventive measures should be taken for patients with high body mass index, hernia sac measuring ≥3 cm, and a high risk of the hernia extending into the scrotum.

AIM: This study aims to explore the incidence and risk factors for permanent colostomy complicated with a parastomal hernia (PSH) after rectal cancer resection. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of gastrointestinal surgery performed from January 2013 to December 2017 in patients with colorectal cancer treated at the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University. The relevant clinical variables of the patient were analyzed. Kaplan-Meier, univariate, and Cox multivariate analyses were used to evaluate the influencing factors and morbidity of PSH. RESULTS: Among the 211 patients, 65 developed PSH. The cumulative incidence reached 33.5% at 62 months. In the multivariate Cox survival analysis, the results showed that being a woman, aged ≥65 years, having a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2 , diabetes, and Clavien-Dindo Grade III and IV complications were risk factors for the occurrence of PSH. CONCLUSION: In our study, the incidence of PSH increased annually and reached a maximum of 33.5% after 62 months. Among the patient-related factors, female sex, age ≥65 years, BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 , diabetes, and postoperative Clavien-Dindo Grade III and IV complications were significantly associated with the development of PSH. Therefore, intervention measures to prevent patients with this risk factor are advisable.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate the clinical value of copy number variation-sequencing (CNV-Seq) in combination with cytogenetic karyotyping in prenatal diagnosis. METHODS: CNV-Seq and cytogenetic karyotyping were performed in parallel for 9452 prenatal samples for comparison of the diagnostic performance of the two methods, and to evaluate the screening performance of maternal age, maternal serum screening, fetal ultrasound scanning and noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) for fetal pathogenic copy number variation (CNV). RESULTS: Among the 9452 prenatal samples, traditional karyotyping detected 704 cases (7.5%) of abnormal cytogenetic karyotypes, 171 (1.8%) chromosome polymorphism, 20 (0.2%) subtle structural variations, 74 (0.7%) mutual translocation (possibly balanced), 52 (0.6%) without karyotyping results, and 8431 (89.2%) normal cytogenetic karyotypes. Among the 8705 cases with normal karyotype, polymorphism, mutual translocation, or marker chromosome, CNV-Seq detected 63 cases (0.7%) of pathogenic chromosome microdeletion/duplication. Retrospectively, noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) had high sensitivity and specificity for the screening of fetal pathogenic CNV, and NIPT combining with maternal age, maternal serum screening or fetal ultrasound scanning, which improved the screening performance. CONCLUSION: The combined application of cytogenetic karyotyping and CNV-Seq significantly improved the detection rate of fetal pathogenic chromosome microdeletion/duplication. NIPT was recommended for the screening of pathogenic chromosome microdeletion/duplication, and NIPT combining with other screening methods further improved the screening performance for pathogenic fetal CNV.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is harmful to the patient's life. The treatment of patients is determined by accurate preoperative staging. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) played an important role in the preoperative examination of patients with rectal cancer, and artificial intelligence (AI) in the learning of images made significant achievements in recent years. Introducing AI into MRI recognition, a stable platform for image recognition and judgment can be established in a short period. This study aimed to establish an automatic diagnostic platform for predicting preoperative T staging of rectal cancer through a deep neural network. METHODS: A total of 183 rectal cancer patients' data were collected retrospectively as research objects. Faster region-based convolutional neural networks (Faster R-CNN) were used to build the platform. And the platform was evaluated according to the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. RESULTS: An automatic diagnosis platform for T staging of rectal cancer was established through the study of MRI. The areas under the ROC curve (AUC) were 0.99 in the horizontal plane, 0.97 in the sagittal plane, and 0.98 in the coronal plane. In the horizontal plane, the AUC of T1 stage was 1, AUC of T2 stage was 1, AUC of T3 stage was 1, AUC of T4 stage was 1. In the coronal plane, AUC of T1 stage was 0.96, AUC of T2 stage was 0.97, AUC of T3 stage was 0.97, AUC of T4 stage was 0.97. In the sagittal plane, AUC of T1 stage was 0.95, AUC of T2 stage was 0.99, AUC of T3 stage was 0.96, and AUC of T4 stage was 1.00. CONCLUSION: Faster R-CNN AI might be an effective and objective method to build the platform for predicting rectal cancer T-staging. ABSTRACT

Groin hernioplasty is the most performed intervention in the adults worldwide, the minimally invasive inguinal hernia repair techniques widely used by surgeons today are transabdominal preperitoneal patch plasty (TAPP) and total extraperitoneal patch plasty (TEP). We report a 62-year-old man with bowel obstruction caused by the use of self-anchoring barbed suture to close the peritoneum 3 days after TAPP. Surgeons using the barbed suture should be alert to this possibility when encountering this complication of intestinal obstruction, so as to avoid more serious consequences.

Background: The accurate prediction of the tumor infiltration depth in the gastric wall based on enhanced CT images of gastric cancer is crucial for screening gastric cancer diseases and formulating treatment plans. Convolutional neural networks perform well in image segmentation. In this study, a convolutional neural network was used to construct a framework for automatic tumor recognition based on enhanced CT images of gastric cancer for the identification of lesion areas and the analysis and prediction of T staging of gastric cancer. Methods: Enhanced CT venous phase images of 225 patients with advanced gastric cancer from January 2017 to June 2018 were retrospectively collected. Ftable LabelImg software was used to identify the cancerous areas consistent with the postoperative pathological T stage. The training set images were enhanced to train the Faster RCNN detection model. Finally, the accuracy, specificity, recall rate, F1 index, ROC curve, and AUC were used to quantify the classification performance of T staging on this system. Results: The AUC of the Faster RCNN operating system was 0.93, and the recognition accuracies for T2, T3, and T4 were 90, 93, and 95%, respectively. The time required to automatically recognize a single image was 0.2 s, while the interpretation time of an imaging expert was ~10 s. Conclusion: In enhanced CT images of gastric cancer before treatment, the application of Faster RCNN to diagnosis the T stage of gastric cancer has high accuracy and feasibility.

Framework-forming scleractinian (FFS) corals provide structurally complex habitats to support abundant and diverse benthic communities but are vulnerable to environmental changes and anthropogenic disturbances. Scientific modeling of suitable habitat provides important insights into the impact of the environmental conditions and fills the gap in the knowledge on habitat suitability. This study presents predictive habitat suitability modeling for deep-sea (depth > 50 m) FFS corals in the GoM. We first conducted a nonparametric estimate of the observed coral point process intensity as a function of each numeric environmental variable. Next, we performed species distribution modeling (SDM) using an assemble of four machine learning models - maximum entropy (ME), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and deep neural network (DNN). We found that most important variables controlling the coral distribution are super-dominant gravel and rock substrata, SW and SE aspects, slope steepness, salinity, depth, temperature, acidity, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll-a. Highly suitable habitats are predicted to be on the continental slope off Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi and the shelf and slope of the West Florida Escarpment. All the four models have outstanding prediction performances with AUC values over 0.95. DNN model performs best (AUC = 0.987). The study contributes to coral habitat modeling research by presenting unique methods including nonparametric function of coral point process intensity, DNN and SVM models that have not been used in coral SDM, post-classification model assembling, and percentile approach to determine a threshold value for classifying a suitability score map into a binary map. Our findings would help support conservation prioritization, management and planning, and guide new field exploration.

ABSTRACT

Templated assembly techniques have been extensively used to develop various types of hemoglobin (Hb) loaded particles with improved performance. However, several instability issues must still be solved, including Hb exposure, enhanced Hb auto-oxidation, and the relatively weak binding of Hb to cross-linkers. Herein, to meet the stability requirements for novel hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs), hemoglobin-polydopamine particles (Hb-PDA) were fabricated using a mild process that combines the co-precipitation of Hb and an inorganic template with the spontaneous adhesion of PDA. The Hb-PDA showed uniform size distribution, chemical integrity of both Hb and PDA, high biocompatibility, and robust oxygen delivery. Our results demonstrated that the use of polydopamine as a biocompatible coating material reduced Hb leakage from the particles under both static and flow conditions, thus mitigating the toxicity associated with free Hb and strengthening the stability of Hb particles. In addition, Hb-PDA reduced HUVEC (Human Umbilical Vein Cells) oxidative injury and scavenged 85% of the available hydroxyl radicals, exhibiting its potential to act as an antioxidant for encapsulated Hb. Hb-PDA therefore shows significant promise as a cell-like structurally and functionally stable HBOCs.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the overall distribution of pregnancy outcomes in women with elevated second-trimester maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MS-AFP), and to determine the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) by MS-AFP level. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 429 women with elevated MS-AFP (≥2.5 multiple of the median (MOM)) and 1555 women with normal MS-AFP (0.5-2.49MOM) from a total of 46,741 prenatally screened singleton pregnant women. The overall distribution of APOs of the two groups, the risk of APOs by MS-AFP level, and the predictive value of elevated MS-AFP to APOs were analyzed. RESULTS: The incidence rate of APOs in elevated MS-AFP group was significantly higher than that in normal MS-AFP group (42.89 vs. 8.23%). In elevated MS-AFP group, the top three APOs, in term of incidence rate, were structural fetal abnormalities (7.93%), spontaneous abortion (7.46%) and preterm birth (7.23%); regarding to the risk, the top three APOs were stillbirth, spontaneous abortion and early-onset preeclampsia (odds ratio 35.98, 20.81 and 8.58 respectively). For structural fetal abnormalities, MS-AFP had predictive values for fetal open neural tube defects (ONTDs), gastroschisis and multiple malformations. CONCLUSION: Elevated MS-AFP is associated with increased risks of APOs. ONTDs complicate merely a small proportion of pregnancies with elevated MS-AFP, and the rest of them have high risks of obstetric complications. MS-AFP can help to identify these women at high risk of APOs in earlier second-trimester.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: It is well known that second-trimester maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MS-AFP) is a predictor for adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs), such as preterm birth, stillbirth, preeclampsia and small for gestational age (SGA). However, it is unknown whether first-trimester MS-AFP is also predictive of APOs. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the data on the first-trimester MS-AFP levels and pregnancy outcomes of 3325 singleton pregnant women. The cutoff value of 2.5 multiple of the median (MoM) was used to evaluate the risks of APOs regarding MS-AFP. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to evaluate the predictive efficiencies of MS-AFP to these disorders. RESULTS: A total of 181 pregnancies resulted in preterm birth, 32 in stillbirth, 81 in preeclampsia, and 362 in SGA. Compared to women with MS-AFP < 2.5MoM, those with MS-AFP ≥ 2.5MoM had increased risks (odds ratio, 95% confidence interval) of preterm birth (2.53, 1.65~3.88), preeclampsia (3.05, 1.71~5.43) and SGA (1.90, 1.34~2.69), and had an earlier distribution of gestational weeks at delivery (P = 0.004) and a lower distribution of neonatal birth weights (P = 0.000), but the actual between-group differences were minuscule. The areas under ROC curves were 0.572 (P = 0.001), 0.579 (P = 0.015) and 0.565 (P = 0.000) for preterm birth, preeclampsia and SGA, respectively. Subdivisions for the disorders did not obviously improve the performances of MS-AFP. CONCLUSIONS: Elevated first-trimester MS-AFP is associated with increased risk of preterm birth, preeclampsia and SGA. However, the predictive efficiencies were low and it is not a good predictor for these APOs.

ABSTRACT

Hemoglobin-polydopamine particles (Hb-PDA) have shown high stability, with polydopamine (PDA) serving as a protective layer and antioxidant. However, the effects of the PDA coating on the properties and in vivo biosafety of Hb-PDA remain unclear. This work was conducted to characterize Hb-PDA and evaluate its biosafety. Hb-PDA exhibited negative surface charge and their infusion did not cause blood immunotoxicity or significant tissue injury. Hb-PDA were not phagocyted after co-incubation with macrophages for 3 h. Moreover, the particles showed the highest accumulation in the lungs, and a prolonged retention in major organs. It was also found that the particles were cleared by macrophages in splenic tissue and Kupffer cells in hepatic tissue. In summary, this research showed that Hb-PDA has high dispersion stability, low in vivo toxicity, and extended retention, illustrating its potency as a biosafe oxygen carrier.

Introduction: This study evaluated the accuracy of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) for preoperative staging of rectal cancer and guiding the treatment of transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) in early rectal cancer.Material and methods: One-hundred-twenty-six patients with rectal cancer were staged preoperatively using EUS and the results were compared with postoperative histopathology results. Radical surgeries, including low anterior resection (LAR), abdominal-perineal resection (APR) and Hartmann surgeries, were performed on patients with advanced rectal cancers, and TEM was performed on patients with stage T1. The Kappa statistic was used to determine agreement between EUS-based staging and pathology staging.Results: The overall accuracies of EUS for T and N stage were 90.8% (Kappa = 0.709) and 76.7% (Kappa = 0.419), respectively. The accuracies of EUS for uT1, uT2, uT3, and uT4 stages were 96.8%, 92.1%, 84.1%, and 88.9%, respectively, and for uN0, uN1, and uN2 stages, they were 71.9%, 64.9%, and 93.0%, respectively. Twelve patients underwent TEM and received confirmed pathology results of early rectal cancer. After postoperative follow-up, there were no local recurrences or distant metastases.Conclusion: EUS is a good and comparable technique for postoperative staging of rectal cancer. Moreover, EUS is used as indicator for preoperative staging and tumor assessment strategy when considering TEM.

AIM: It has been reported in numerous studies that elevated maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MS-AFP) is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes (APO), such as pre-eclampsia, stillbirth, preterm birth and fetal growth restriction. However, the mechanism linking elevated MS-AFP and APO is obscure. In this study, we tried to explore the mechanism by using pregnant rats. METHODS: Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was used to induce placental inflammation in pregnant rats. Maternal serum and placental inflammatory cytokines and placental morphology were used to assess the level of placental inflammation. The incidences of APO and the levels of MS-AFP were evaluated. The expressions of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in the related organs and fetal serum AFP levels were detected. RESULTS: Compared to saline-treated pregnant rats, LPS led to elevated maternal serum and placental inflammatory cytokines and a higher rate of placental inflammation. Lipopolysaccharide resulted in the features of APO and at the same time elevated MS-AFP. Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein levels were significantly correlated to the evaluation parameters of APO. Lipopolysaccharide did not increase the expressions of AFP in fetal liver, maternal liver and placenta, but reduced the fetal serum AFP levels. CONCLUSION: The phenomenon that elevated MS-AFP is associated with APO, which has been reported in human pregnancies, is observed in our rat model. Placental inflammation can be the potential cause linking the two manifestations together. Although the source of elevated MS-AFP is not identified, fetal blood circulation is suspected. Our study may provide an animal model for the future studies on this subject.
