ABSTRACT

Pressure-induced amorphous-to-amorphous configuration changes in Ca-Al metallic glasses (MGs) were studied by performing in-situ room-temperature high-pressure x-ray diffraction up to about 40 GPa. Changes in compressibility at about 18 GPa, 15.5 GPa and 7.5 GPa during compression are detected in Ca(80)Al(20), Ca(72.7)Al(27.3), and Ca(66.4)Al(33.6) MGs, respectively, whereas no clear change has been detected in the Ca(50)Al(50) MG. The transfer of s electrons into d orbitals under pressure, reported for the pressure-induced phase transformations in pure polycrystalline Ca, is suggested to explain the observation of an amorphous-to-amorphous configuration change in this Ca-Al MG system. Results presented here show that the pressure induced amorphous-to-amorphous configuration is not limited to f electron-containing MGs.

ABSTRACT

Lattice vibrations have been investigated in TiB2, ZrB2 and HfB2 by temperature-dependent extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) experiments. Data clearly show that the EXAFS oscillations are characterized by an anomalous behavior of the Debye-Waller factor of the transition-metal-boron pair, which is suggested to be associated with a superposition of an optical mode corresponding to phonon vibrations induced by the B sublattice and an acoustic mode corresponding to the transition-metal (TM) sublattice. Data can be interpreted as a decoupling of the metal and boron vibrations observed in these transition-metal diborides (TMB2), a mechanism that may be responsible for the significant reduction of the superconducting transition temperature observed in these systems with respect to the parent MgB2 compound. The vibrational behavior of TM-TM bonds has also been investigated to study the occurrence of anisotropy and anomalies in the lattice vibrational behavior of TM-TM bonds.

ABSTRACT

In situ high-pressure x-ray diffraction, low-temperature resistivity, and magnetization experiments were performed on a La(32)Ce(32)Al(16)Ni(5)Cu(15) bulk metallic glass (BMG). A sudden change in compressibility at approximately 14 GPa and a rapid increase of resistivity at approximately 12 K were detected, whereas magnetic phase transformation and magnetic field dependence of the low-temperature resistivity do not occur at temperatures down to 4.2 K. An interaction between conduction electrons and the two-level systems is suggested to explain the temperature and field dependences of resistivity of the BMG alloy. Although the cause of the unusual change in compressibility at approximately 14 GPa is not clear, we believe that it could be linked with the unique electron structure of cerium in the amorphous matrix. An electronic phase transition in BMG alloys, most likely a second-order amorphous-to-amorphous phase transition, is suggested.

ABSTRACT

Nickel oxide nanowires modified by poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) were synthesized via a simple chemical pattern. For the first time NiO nanowires with diameters ranging from 40 to 100 nm with the expected ratio (length vs diameter) ranging from 54 to 90 were grown using a simple solution-phase approach (mild method). These nickel nanowires exhibited unique photoluminescence features and displayed a significant UV luminescence. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy has been used to characterize the local Ni environment and identify the electronic structure. Comparing experimental and theoretical spectra at the Ni and O K edges, we determine the lattice distortion via the analysis of the characteristic preedge features and the multiple-scattering structures detected in the X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectra. The correlation between experimental features and the disordered or distorted local structures is also discussed.

ABSTRACT

By mixing an aqueous solution of CuCl2 with an NaDC aqueous solution of various concentration and initial molar ratio, seven coordinated samples with distinct appearances and characters were obtained. Their structures and components were investigated by FT-IR spectroscopy, EXAFS (the extended X-ray absorption fine structure), thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, laser light scattering, TEM (transmission electron micrograph), element analysis and ICP (inductively coupled plasma) analysis. The following conclusions were given: (1) The complexes of Cu2+-NaDC with distinct appearances and properties were synthesized. (2) After Cu(DC)2 dissolved in NaDC aqueous solution, larger micelles (30-90 nm diameter) formed in the supernate, it is a mixed micelle with Cu(DC)2 and NaDC. So these micelles are a new kind of micelle containing two kinds of metal ions. This is a new result using metal ions as bridges to form micelle. (3) According to the different concentration of Cu2+ to NaDC, the complexes formed as gel or poly-crystals. Both the composition of gel complexes and the coordination structure of carboxyl groups with metal ions varied with the initial molar ratio of Cu2+ to Na+. The gel complexes exhibits the non-stoichiometric character. (4) These results are in agreement with physiological condition. All the different states such as gel, precipitate, micelles of various structures are present in bile of gallbladder. We can suggest an ideal model of the interaction between Cu2+ and bile salts in vivo.
