ABSTRACT

The spread of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) has resulted in a corresponding increase in the incidence of urinary tract infections (UTIs). The risk factors and hospitalization burden for community-acquired MDRO-associated UTIs are discussed herein. This retrospective study included 278 patients with community-based MDRO-associated UTIs from January 2020 to January 2022. The MDRO (n = 139) and non-MDRO groups (n = 139) were separated based on drug susceptibility results. Community-based MDRO-associated UTIs mainly occurred in the elderly and frail patients with a history of invasive urinary tract procedures. The MDRO group imposed a greater economic burden compared to the non-MDRO group. Independent risk factors for community-based MDRO-associated UTIs were as follows: white blood cell (WBC) count > 10.0 × 109/L (OR = 2.316, 95% CI = 1.316-3.252; P = .018); ≥3 kinds of urinary tract obstructive diseases (OR = 1.720, 95% CI = 1.004-2.947; P = .048); use of 3rd generation cephalosporins (OR = 2.316, 95% CI = 1.316-4.076; P = .004); and a history of invasive urologic procedures (OR = 2.652, 95% CI = 1.567-4.487; P < .001). Days of hospitalization, antibiotic use, and bladder catheter use were significantly greater in the MDRO group than the non-MDRO group (P < .05).

ABSTRACT

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) are recognized as one of the second-generation electrochemical energy storage systems with the most potential due to their high theoretical specific capacity of the sulfur cathode (1675 mAhg-1), abundant elemental sulfur energy storage, low price, and green friendliness. However, the shuttle effect of polysulfides results in the passivation of the lithium metal anode, resulting in a decrease in battery capacity, Coulombic efficiency, and cycle stability, which seriously restricts the commercialization of LSBs. Starting from the separator layer before the positive sulfur cathode and lithium metal anode, introducing a barrier layer for the shuttle of polysulfides is considered an extremely effective research strategy. These research strategies are effective in alleviating the shuttle of polysulfide ions, improving the utilization of active materials, enhancing the battery cycle stability, and prolonging the cycle life. This paper reviews the research progress of the separator functionalization in LSBs in recent years and the research trend of separator functionalization in the future is predicted.

ABSTRACT

Multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MDR-AB) infections are becoming increasingly common. The Real-Time Nosocomial Infection (NI) Surveillance System (RT-NISS) was used to monitor MDR-AB NI in intensive care units (ICUs) to prevent NI outbreaks. Therefore, the RT-NISS was used in the current study to monitor MDR-AB infections in a neurosurgery ICU. Clinical interventions, including recommended antibiotics, bacterial distribution in the patient analysis, and bed adjustments, were carried out based on the monitoring results. The RT-NISS was also used to monitor clinical data, implement, and provide training on NI control. The RT-NISS detected a potential cluster of XDR-AB when five patients admitted to the neurosurgery ICU were tested positive for AB between 11 and 17 June 2019. Only two infected cases originated in the hospital, and there was no NI outbreak. The hospital Infection Control Department took appropriate measures to prevent cross-infection; specifically, an epidemiologic investigation and environmental assessment were conducted, and NI prevention and outbreak management training was provided. In summary, the RT-NISS enhanced the timeliness and efficacy of NI control and surveillance in a neurosurgery ICU. In order to prevent NI outbreaks, the Real-Time Nosocomial Infection (NI) Surveillance System (RT-NISS) was employed to monitor MDR-AB NI in critical care units (ICU). Based on the monitoring data, clinical actions such as required antibiotics, bacterial distribution in the patient analysis, and bed changes were carried out. In a neurosurgery ICU, the RT-NISS improved the timeliness and efficacy of NI control and surveillance.

ABSTRACT

There are many challenges for the Static lithium polysulfide semiliquid battery in its commercial application, such as poor stability of the cathode material and further amplification of the lithium polysulfide shuttle effect. Therefore, this manuscript introduced a new type of Pt3Ni@C composite material as cathode working electrode based on the principle of volcanic catalytic curve. Through symmetric battery test, CV, polarization curves and impedance test, it was found that Pt3Ni@C composite material had good catalytic activity of lithium polysulfide to improve electrochemical kinetics. When the catholyte was Li2S8 and the charge-discharge voltage range was 1.8~2.6 V, the capacity maintained at approximately 550 mAh g-1, and the coulombic efficiency maintained at approximately 95% after 100 cycles at a current rate of 0.5 mA cm-2. The Pt3Ni@C composite material is a potential cathode material with the specific capacity and long cycling stability of the static lithium polysulfide semiliquid battery.

ABSTRACT

Based on soluble starch and acrylamide by performing graft polymerization in aqueous solution and hydrolysis step, a low-cost ion exchange resin has been synthesized to remove the heavy metal ions of Cr3+ and Ni2+. The hydrolysis progresses by adding NaOH to convert -CONH2 to -COONa, and the adsorption experiments confirmed that the functional group to adsorb heavy metals is -COO-, rather than -CONH2. During the determination of heavy metal adsorption, the Na+ concentration diffused by SR-16 into the solution was also analysed to investigate the ion exchange process. The composition and morphology of SR-16 was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, elemental analyser and EDS, and the results showed that SR-16 has an excellent adsorption capacity to the removal of heavy metal pollution; the adsorption mechanism of SR-16 could be explained by ion exchange progress with -COONa attached on the network structure.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To develop a scale to assess infectious disease-specific health literacy (IDSHL) in China and test its initial psychometric properties. METHODS: Item pooling, reduction and assessment of psychometric properties were conducted. The scale was divided into 2 subscales; subscale 1 assessed an individual's skills to prevent/treat infectious diseases and subscale 2 assessed cognitive ability. In 2014, 9000 people aged 15-69 years were randomly sampled from 3 provinces and asked to complete the IDSHL questionnaire. Cronbach's α was calculated to assess reliability. Exploratory factor analysis, t-test, correlations, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and logistic regression were used to examine validity. RESULTS: Each of the 22 items in subscale 1 had a content validity index >0.8. In total, 8858 people completed the scale. The principal components factor analysis suggested a 5-factor solution. All factor loadings were >0.40 (p<0.05). The IDSHL score was 22.07±7.91 (mean±SD; total score=38.62). Significant differences were observed across age (r=-0.276), sex (males: 21.65±8.03; females: 22.47±7.78), education (14.16±8.19 to 26.55±6.26), 2-week morbidity (present: 20.62±8.17, absent: 22.35±7.83; p<0.001) and health literacy of the highest and lowest 27% score groups (all p<0.05). The ROC curve indicated that 76.2% of respondents were adequate in IDSHL. Binary logistic regression analysis revealed 12 predictors of IDSHL adequacy (p<0.05). Among the 22 remaining items, Corrected Item-Total Correlation ranged from 0.316 to 0.504 and Cronbach's α values ranged from 0.754 to 0.810 if the items were deleted. The overall α value was 0.839 and the difficulty coefficient ranged from 1.19 to 4.08. For subscale 2, there were statistically significant differences between the mean scores of those with a correct/incorrect answer (all p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The newly developed 28-item scale provides an efficient, psychometrically sound and user-friendly measure of IDSHL in the Chinese population.
