ABSTRACT

Next generation of wireless brain-computer-interface (BCI) devices require dedicated neural signal processors (NSPs) to extract key neurological information while operating within given power consumption and transmission bandwidth limits. Spike detection and clustering are important signal processing steps in neurological research and clinical applications. Computational-friendly spike detection and feature extraction algorithms are first systematically evaluated in this work. The nonlinear energy operator (NEO) and the first-and-second-derivative (FSDE) together with the 'perturbed' K-mean clustering achieve the highest accuracy performance. An NSP ASIC is implemented in a channel-interleaved architecture and the folding ratio of 16 leads to the minimum power-and-area product. As the result, the NSP consumes 2-µW power consumption and occupies 0.0057 mm2 for each channel in a 65-nm CMOS technology. The proposed system achieves the unsupervised spike classification accuracy of 92% and a data-rate reduction of 98.3%, showing the promise for realizing high-channel-count wireless BCIs.

ABSTRACT

Recently, nucleic acid delivery has become an amazing route for the treatment of various malignant diseases, and polycationic vectors are attracting more and more attention among gene vectors. However, conventional polycationic vectors still face many obstacles in nucleic acid delivery, such as significant cytotoxicity, high protein absorption behavior, and unsatisfactory blood compatibility caused by a high positive charge density. To solve these problems, the fabrication of hydroxyl-rich branched polycationic vectors has been proposed. For the synthesis of hydroxyl-rich branched polycations, a one-pot method is considered as the preferred method due to its simple preparation process. In this review, typical one-pot methods for fabricating hydroxyl-rich polycations are presented. In particular, amine-epoxide ring-opening polymerization as a novel approach is mainly introduced. In addition, various therapeutic scenarios of hydroxyl-rich branched polycations via one-pot fabrication are also generalized. We believe that this review will motivate the optimized design of hydroxyl-rich branched polycations for potential nucleic acid delivery and their bio-applications.

ABSTRACT

The widespread use of veterinary antibiotics has led to the significant problem of contamination of livestock wastewater with significant amount of antibiotics. Electrocoagulation (EC) has become a prominent research topic because of the technique's ability to remove antibiotics from livestock wastewater. However, an urgent solution is needed to reduce the high operating costs associated with the process. Therefore, in this study, we developed a positive single pulse current (PSPC)-EC system to remove tetracycline (TC) from synthetic and actual livestock wastewater. Influential factors were investigated, and the optimal PSPC-EC operating parameters were identified as follows: duty ratio = 60%, pH = 4, electrode spacing = 1 cm, current intensity = 0.2 A, and conductivity = 2 mS cm-1. The mechanism of PSPC-EC was characterised using techniques including scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The TC decomposition pathway was proposed based on the generation of its intermediate products. A toxicity estimation software tool (TEST) model was used to evaluate the toxicity of TC and its main degradation products, and most of its intermediates were found to be less toxic than TC. The contribution ratios of floc adsorption and electrochemical oxidation for removing TC were 74.17% and 21.48%, respectively. The highest TC removal rate reached 95% with an operating cost of 0.011 USD/m3. Finally, under the optimum conditions identified, actual livestock wastewater was treated by PSPC-EC. Compared with conventional EC and coagulation treatment techniques that consume electricity and produce pollution, the results indicate that the PSPC-EC technique with changing current operation mode is a more cost-effective and attractive option for removing TC from livestock wastewater.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to develop a statistical lumbar spine geometry model accounting for morphological variations among the adult population. Five lumber vertebrae and lumber spine curvature were collected from CT scans of 82 adult subjects through CT segmentation, landmark identification, and template mesh mapping. Generalized Procrustes Analysis (GPA), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and multivariate regression analysis were conducted to develop the statistical lumbar spine model. Two statistical models were established to predict the vertebrae geometry and lumbar curvature respectively. Using the statistical models, a lumbar spine finite element (FE) model could be rapidly generated with a given set of age, sex, stature, and body mass index (BMI). The results showed that the lumbar spine vertebral size was significantly affected by stature, sex and age, and the lumbar spine curvature was significantly affected by stature and age. This statistical lumbar spine model could serve as the geometric basis for quantifying effects of human characteristics on lumbar spine injury risks in impact conditions.
