ABSTRACT

NASICON-type Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP) is a widely used solid electrolyte in solid-state lithium batteries, owing to its excellent chemical stability against moisture and high total ionic conductivity. However, traditionally, densification of LATP has been achieved through a high-temperature sintering process (approximately 1000 °C) owing to its poor sinterability. Herein, we report a facile synthesis route to obtain highly sinterable LATP solid electrolyte using tetrabutyl titanate (C16H36O4Ti) as the titanium source and incorporating the traditional solid-state reaction method. The synthetic LATP powder mixed with a low ratio of LiTiPO5 exhibited a hybrid crystalline-amorphous phase structure, which facilitated grain fusion, promoted structural homogeneity, and facilitated structural densification under low-temperature sintering. The sintered LATP pellet, which exhibited an interconnected structure and indistinct grain boundaries, achieved a relative density of >90% and an ionic conductivity of 0.667 mS/cm at a sintering temperature of only 750 °C. Additionally, we systematically studied and demonstrated the synthesis reaction mechanism, sintering behavior, and ionic diffusion kinetics of LATP electrolytes. Our study paves the way for synthesizing highly sinterable LATP solid electrolytes using a simple, additive-free, and cost-effective method.

ABSTRACT

The ionic conductivity, phase components, and microstructures of LATP depend on its synthesis process. However, their relative importance and their interactions with synthesis process parameters (such as source materials, calcination temperature, and sintering temperature) remain unclear. In this work, different source materials were used to prepare LATP via the solid-state reaction method under different calcination and sintering temperatures, and an analysis via orthogonal experiments and machine learning was used to systematically study the effects of the process parameters. Sintering temperatures had the greatest effect on the total ionic conductivity of LATP pellets, followed by the sources and calcination temperatures. Sources, as the foundational factors, directly determine the composition of a major secondary phase of LATP pellets, which influences the whole process. The calcination temperature had limited impact on the ion conductivity of LATP pellets if pellets were sintered under the optimal temperature. The sintering temperature is the most important factor that influences the ion conductivity by eliminating most secondary phases and altering the microstructure of LATP, including the intergranular contact, grain size, relative densities, etc. This work offers a novel perspective to comprehend the synthesis of solid-state electrolytes beyond LATP.

ABSTRACT

Unexpected interface resistance and lithium dendrite puncture hinder the application of garnet-type solid-state electrolytes in high-energy-density systems. Different from the previous high-temperature (>180 °C) molten lithium that promotes the alloying reaction between the coating layer and Li to enhance the interface contact, herein, we introduce liquid-metal-like SbCl3 to construct a three-dimensional Li+ directional-selection interlayer by in situ low-temperature lithiation (80 °C). An interlayer with a more negative interface energy composed of SbLi3 and LiCl exhibits a superior affinity with Li and LGLZO, which reduces the interface resistance and suppresses the growth of Li dendrites by an insulated electron. The introduction of the SbCl3 modification layer into Li/Li symmetric cells enables charge/discharge at a current density of 6.0 mA cm-2 and operation for more than 1000 h under 2.0 mA cm-2 at room temperature. The full cells with the LiFePO4 cathode exhibit a high residual capacity of 144.8 mAh g-1 at 0.5 C after 1000 cycles and excellent cycling stability with a retention ratio of 94.7% at 1 C after 600 cycles. The low-temperature lithiation method based on an energy-saving perspective should be applied to other types of solid-state electrolyte modification strategies.

ABSTRACT

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to study the initial discharge/charge process in a sulfur cathode with different potentials. In the second discharge region (2.00-1.70 V), where soluble polysulfides are reduced to Li2S, the EIS spectra exhibit three semicircles/arcs as the frequency decreased. An appropriate equivalent circuit is proposed to fit the experimental EIS data. Based on detailed analysis of the change in kinetic parameters obtained from simulating the experimental EIS data as functions of potential, the high-frequency, middle-frequency and low-frequency semicircles/arcs can be attributed to the Schottky contact reflecting the electronic properties of materials, the charge transfer step and the formation of Li2S respectively. The inclined line arises from the diffusion process in the detectable potentials and frequency range. Several important electrochemical reactions also have been verified by cyclic voltammetry curves.

ABSTRACT

In this study, nerol was biosynthesized in the metabolic engineered Escherichia coli from glucose for the first time. Firstly, the truncated neryl diphosphate synthase gene tNDPS1 was expressed that catalyzes isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) and dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP) to form neryl diphosphate (NPP), and then the nerol synthase gene GmNES was co-expressed to synthesize the final product nerol from NPP. The engineered strain LZ001 accumulated 0.053 ±â€¯0.015 mg/L of nerol. Secondly, the IDI1, MVD1, ERG8, ERG12, tHMG1 and ERG13 were co-expressed to increase the supply of IPP and DMAPP. Finally, the heterologous ERG10 gene was overexpressed, and the recombinant strain LZ005 produced 1.564 ±â€¯0.102 mg/L of nerol in shaking-flask culture, which represents a 29.51-fold increase over LZ001 strain. This study shows the novel method for the biosynthesis of nerol and provides new metabolic engineering strategy for the production of terpenoids.

ABSTRACT

Porous self-assembled α-Fe2O3 hollow microspheres were fabricated via an ionic liquid-assisted solvothermal reaction and sequential calcinations. The concentration of the ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [C4Mim]BF4) was found to play a crucial role in the control of these α-Fe2O3 hollow structures. Trace amounts ionic liquid was used as the soft template to synthesize α-Fe2O3 hollow spheres with a large specific surface (up to 220 m2/g). Based on time-dependent experiments, the proposed formation mechanisms were presented. Under UV light irradiation, the as-synthesized α-Fe2O3 hollow spheres exhibited excellent photocatalysis in Rhodamine B (RhB) photodegradation and the rate constant was 2-3 times higher than α-Fe2O3 particles. The magnetic properties of α-Fe2O3 hollow structures were found to be closely associated with the shape anisotropy.

ABSTRACT

The recent decades have witnessed refrigeration systems playing an important role in the life of human beings, with wide applications in various fields, including building comfort, food storage, food transportation and the medical special care units. However, if the temperature is not controlled well, it will lead to many harmful public health effects, such as the human being catching colds, food spoilage and harm to the recovering patients. Besides, refrigeration systems consume a significant portion of the whole society's electricity usage, which consequently contributes a considerable amount of carbon emissions into the public environment. In order to protect human health and improve the energy efficiency, an optimal control strategy is designed in this paper with the following steps: (1) identifying the refrigeration system model based on a least squares method; (2) tuning an initial group of parameters of the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller via the pidTuner Toolbox of Matlab; (3) using an intelligent algorithm, namely fruit fly optimization (FOA), to further optimize the parameters of the PID controller. By comparing the optimal PID controller and the controller provided in the reference, the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed optimal PID controller can produce a more controllable temperature, with less tacking overshoot, less settling time, and more stable performance under a constant set-point.

ABSTRACT

A novel "selective surface dissolution" (SSD) method was successfully utilized in previous research to prepare "all-polymer composites" aiming to structural applications. In the current study, this simple, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly method was employed for the first time to synthesize cellulose-derived highly porous three-dimensional (3D) activated carbon materials to assemble superior electrodes for supercapacitors. ZnCl2 aqueous solution was used to partially dissolve the surface of cellulose fibers. The partially dissolved cellulose I crystalline phase at the fiber surface can be consolidated into fibrillar cellulose polymorphs (e.g., cellulose II) which connects remaining fibers together. By a carefully controlled SSD method, a highly porous 3D cellulosic skeleton with interconnected bridge-like fibrillar linkages and hierarchical pore structures can be created. After carbonization, the 3D fiber construct with interconnected fibrillar linkages and hierarchical pore structures remains and highly porous activated carbons were obtained. The effects of various processing parameters (e.g., solvent concentration, immersion time, etc.) on the morphology of the as-formed activated porous carbons and their electrochemical performance as electrodes in supercapacitors were systematically investigated and discussed. It was concluded that the SSD method is a promising chemical approach to produce large-scale cellulose-derived activated porous carbons in an environmentally friendly manner.

ABSTRACT

The conventional direct energy balance (DEB) based PI control can fulfill the fundamental tracking requirements of the coal-fired power plant. However, it is challenging to deal with the cases when the coal quality variation is present. To this end, this paper introduces the active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) to the DEB structure, where the coal quality variation is deemed as a kind of unknown disturbance that can be estimated and mitigated promptly. Firstly, the nonlinearity of a recent power plant model is analyzed based on the gap metric, which provides guidance on how to set the pressure set-point in line with the power demand. Secondly, the approximate decoupling effect of the DEB structure is analyzed based on the relative gain analysis in frequency domain. Finally, the synthesis of the DEB based ADRC control system is carried out based on multi-objective optimization. The optimized ADRC results show that the integrated absolute error (IAE) indices of the tracking performances in both loops can be simultaneously improved, in comparison with the DEB based PI control and H∞ control system. The regulation performance in the presence of the coal quality variation is significantly improved under the ADRC control scheme. Moreover, the robustness of the proposed strategy is shown comparable with the H∞ control.
