ABSTRACT

This study aims to identify unique signatures from residential coal combustion in China across various combustion conditions and coal types. Using a Thermal/Spectral Carbon Analyzer with a Photoionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (TSCA-PI-TOF-MS), we focus on the optical properties and organic mass spectra of the emissions. Bituminous coal emerged as the primary emitter of total carbon, releasing 729 µg C/mg PM2.5 under smoldering and 894 µg C/mg PM2.5 under flaming. Carbon fractions mainly comprised OC1 and OC2, except for anthracite's dominance of EC1 under smoldering. Pyrolysis carbon absorption shifted from 405, 445 and 532 nm during smoldering to near-infrared bands (635-980 nm) during flaming for both bituminous and anthracite coal. Conversely, clean coal exhibited an inverse trend, attributed to additives enhancing oxygen-containing organic compounds and long-chain hydrocarbons released in charring process. Sample of bituminous coal began charring at OC3 step, while anthracite began earlier at OC2 step, particularly pronounced under flaming. Clean coal displayed unconventional charring at OC1 step under smoldering condition, producing signature compounds like butenal, methylfuran, furanylalcohol, and naphthol. The mass spectra of bituminous coal featured characteristic peaks, including m/z 192 (methylphenanthrene), 206, 220 (alkylated phenanthrenes), and 234 (retene). Anthracite coal showed a potential tracer at m/z 223, shifting from OC1 in smoldering to OC2 in flaming. Clean coal under flaming condition exhibited elevated levels of aromatic compounds, indicating potential toxicity, with peaks at m/z 178 (phenanthrene), 228 (chrysene/benz[a]anthracene), 234 (retene), 242 (methylchrysene), and 252 (benzo[a]pyrene, benzo[k]fluoranthene). Results also showed that the broader mass spectra range in the OC3 and OC4 steps across all coal types suggests that high-temperature pyrolysis promotes diversity. These findings contribute to refined source apportionment of carbon emissions from residential coal combustion and provide the scientific basis for the formulation of air pollution prevention strategies, crucial for coal-dependent regions.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a green and efficient aqueous-phase method for the synthesis of thiosulfonates, which has the benefits of no need for catalysts or redox reagents and a short reaction time, providing a method with great economic value for synthesizing thiosulfonates. Furthermore, 3-Sulfenylindoles can be easily synthesized using this method, which expands the potential applications of this reaction.

ABSTRACT

In order to produce fermented bamboo shoots with functional properties, two strains of lactic acid bacteria were selected for inoculation and fermentation. One strain, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum R1, exhibited prominent potential probiotic properties (including gastrointestinal condition tolerance, adhesion ability, antimicrobial ability, and antibiotic resistance), while the other, Levilactobacillus brevis R2, demonstrated the capability of high γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) production (913.99 ± 14.2 mg/L). The synergistic inoculation of both strains during bamboo shoot fermentation led to a remarkable increase in GABA content (382.31 ± 12.17 mg/kg), surpassing that of naturally fermented bamboo shoots by more than 4.5 times and outperforming mono-inoculated fermentation. Simultaneously, the nitrite content was maintained at a safe level (5.96 ± 1.81 mg/kg). Besides, inoculated fermented bamboo shoots exhibited an increased crude fiber content (16.58 ± 0.04 g/100 g) and reduced fat content (0.39 ± 0.02 g/100 g). Sensory evaluation results indicated a high overall acceptability for the synergistically inoculated fermented bamboo shoots. This study may provide a strategy for the safe and rapid fermentation of bamboo shoots and lay the groundwork for the development of functional vegetable products enriched with GABA.

ABSTRACT

The development of telecom technology not only facilitates social interactions but also inevitably provides the breeding ground for telecom fraud crimes. However, telecom fraud detection is a challenging task as fraudsters tend to commit co-fraud and disguise themselves within the mass of benign ones. Previous approaches work by unearthing differences in calling sequential patterns between independent fraudsters, but they may ignore synergic fraud patterns and oversimplify fraudulent behaviors. Fortunately, graph-like data formed by traceable telecom interaction provides opportunities for graph neural network (GNN)-based telecom fraud detection methods. Therefore, we develop a latent synergy graph (LSG) learning-based telecom fraud detector, named LSG-FD, to model both sequential and interactive fraudulent behaviors. Specifically, LSG-FD introduces (1) a multi-view LSG extractor to reconstruct synergy relationship-oriented graphs from the meta-interaction graph based on second-order proximity assumption; (2) an LSTM-based calling behavior encoder to capture the sequential patterns from the perspective of local individuals; (3) a dual-channel based graph learning module to alleviate the disassortativity issue (caused by the camouflages of fraudsters) by incorporating the dual-channel frequency filters and the learnable controller to adaptively aggregate high- and low-frequency information from their neighbors; (4) an imbalance-resistant model trainer to remedy the graph imbalance issue by developing a label-aware sampler. Experiment results on the telecom fraud dataset and another two widely used fraud datasets have verified the effectiveness of our model.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Accurately forecasting patients admitted to the intensive care units (ICUs) after surgery may improve clinical outcomes and guide the allocation of expensive and limited ICU resources. However, studies on predicting postoperative ICU admission in non-cardiac surgery have been limited. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a prediction model combining pre- and intraoperative variables to predict ICU admission after non-cardiac surgery. METHODS: This study is based on data from the Vital Signs DataBase (VitalDB) database. Predictors were selected using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression method and logistic regression to develop a nomogram and an online web calculator. The model was internally verified by 1000-Bootstrap resampling. Performance of model was evaluated using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), calibration curve and Brier score. The Youden's index was used to find the optimal nomogram's probability threshold. Clinical utility was assessed by decision curve analysis. RESULTS: This study included 5216 non-cardiac surgery patients; of these, 812 (15.6%) required postoperative ICU admission. Potential predictors included age, ASA classification, surgical department, emergency surgery, preoperative albumin level, preoperative urea nitrogen level, intraoperative crystalloid, intraoperative transfusion, intraoperative catheterization, and surgical time. A nomogram was constructed with an AUC of 0.917 (95% CI: 0.907-0.926) and a Brier score of 0.077. The Bootstrap-adjusted AUC was 0.914; the adjusted Brier score was 0.078. The calibration curve showed good agreement between predicted and actual probabilities; and the decision curve indicated clinical usefulness. Finally, we established an online web calculator for clinical application (https://xuzhikun.shinyapps.io/postopICUadmission1/). CONCLUSION: We developed and internally validated an easy-to-use nomogram for predicting ICU admission after non-cardiac surgery.

ABSTRACT

Peanut is an important oilseed crop around the world which provides vegetable oil, protein and vitamins for humans. Major latex-like proteins (MLPs) play important roles in plant growth and development, as well as responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. However, their biological function in peanut is still unclear. In this study, a genome-wide identification of MLP genes in cultivated peanut and two diploid ancestor species was analyzed to determine their molecular evolutionary characteristics and the expression profile under drought and waterlogging stress conditions. Firstly, a total of 135 MLP genes were identified from the genome of tetraploid peanut (Arachis hypogaea) and two diploid species Arachis. duranensis and Arachis. ipaensis. Then, phylogenetic analysis revealed that MLP proteins were divided into five different evolutionary groups. These genes were distributed unevenly at the ends of chromosomes 3, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10 in three Arachis species. The evolution of MLP gene family in peanut was conserved and led by tandem and segmental duplication. The prediction analysis of cis-acting elements showed that the promoter region of peanut MLP genes contained different proportions of transcription factors, plant hormones-responsive elements and so on. The expression pattern analysis showed that they were differentially expressed under waterlogging and drought stress. These results of this study provide a foundation for further research on the function of the important MLP genes in peanut.

ABSTRACT

The carbonylation of alkynes using CO2 to generate aurones is to date unknown. In this study, a palladium-catalyzed carbonylation of terminal aromatic alkynes and the waste hydrosilane, poly(methylhydrosiloxane) (PMHS), is carried out with 2-iodophenol using CO2 to produce aurones. A variety of terminal alkynes and substituted 2-iodophenols are transformed into aurones in good yields. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicate that silyl formate, generated from CO2 and PMHS, plays a crucial role in the carbonylation reaction.

ABSTRACT

Highly dispersed metal sites on the surface of silica, achieved from immobilization of metal precursor within hydroxyl groups, has gained increasing attention in the field of heterogeneous catalyst. However, the special role of adsorbed water derived by hydroxyl groups on the silica is generally ignored. Herein, a new understanding of adsorbed water on the formation of highly dispersed tetrahedral Co(II) (Td-cobalt(II)) sites is illustrated. It is indicated that sufficient adsorbed water induces the transformation of precursor of Co(NO3)2 into intermediate of [Co(H2O)6]2+. Subsequently, [Co(H2O)6]2+ makes the highly dispersed Td-cobalt(II) sites to be available during direct H2-reduction process. A systematic characterization and DFT calculation prove the existence of the adsorbed water and the importance of the intermediate of [Co(H2O)6]2+, respectively. The as-synthesized catalyst is attempted to the propane dehydrogenation, which shows better reactivity when compared with other reported Co based catalysts.

Coal fires, most of which are triggered by the spontaneous combustion of coal, cause a huge waste of resources and release poisonous and harmful substances into the environment, seriously threatening the safety of industrial production. Gel flame retardant plays a core role in coal fire prevention and extinguishing. Most gel flame retardants used in coal fires possess good sealing and oxygen isolation properties, but it is difficult for them to flow deep into fire areas due to their low fluidity. Some fire extinguishing agents with good fluidity lack leak-blocking performance. In order to simultaneously improve the fluidity, leakage sealing, and oxygen isolation effects of coal fire extinguishing colloids, a novel, pH-sensitive, sol-gel transition colloid was prepared using low methoxyl pectin (LMP), calcium bentonite (Ca-Bt), sodium bentonite (Na-Bt), and water as the main components. When the initial sol-state colloid absorbed acid gas products from coal combustion, the pH value decreased and a large amount of Ca2+ in Ca-Bt precipitated, thus immediately growing calcium bridges with LMP molecules that formed a three-dimensional network structure for gelation. The optimum ratio of the new colloid was determined through X-ray diffraction, tube inversion, shock shear-temperature scanning, and genetic algorithm. By testing the fire extinguishing performance of the colloid, the findings proved that the product had good oxygen isolation performance, strong adhesion ability, high thermal stability, and strong inhibition effects on coal combustion.

Rational design of fast and sensitive determination of nitrite (NO2-) from a complicated actual sample overtakes a crucial role in constructing a high-efficiency sensing platform. Herein, a visual NO2- sensing platform with outstanding selectivity, sensitivity, and stability based on a surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-enhanced oxidase-like activity has been proposed. Benefiting from the intrinsic photocatalytic activity and limited light penetration of ZnS, the oxidase-like activity based on ZnS decorated on Ag nanowires (Ag@ZnS) is determined. It is demonstrated that the electrons are generated efficiently on the surface of ZnS and then transferred into the hot electrons of Ag with the help of localized SPR excitation, thus greatly oxidating the colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to produce dark blue oxidized TMB (oxTMB). When nitrite is added into the reaction system, the oxTMB will selectively react with NO2- to generate diazotized oxTMB, leading to a visual color change from dark blue to light green and subsequently to dark yellow. Owing to the specific recognition between nitrite and oxTMB, the recovery of catalytic activity induced an enhanced colorimetric test with a wider linear range for NO2- determination, an ultralow detection limit of 0.1 µM, excellent selectivity, and practicability for application in real samples. This plasmon-enhanced oxidase-like activity not only provides a smart approach to realize a colorimetric assay with high sensitivity and simplicity but also modulates oxidase-like activities.

Although researchers have indicated that individuals with depleted self-control resources have lower self-control behavior and exhibit more deceptive behaviors, recent psychological studies have shown that ritual can improve self-control and increase the likelihood that the individual makes prosocial decisions. However, little is known about whether ritual can regulate an individual's engagement in deceptive behavior when their self-control resources are depleted. This study adopted the spot-the-difference task to investigate the influences of ritual and self-control resources depletion on simple self-control behavior and deceptive behavior (Experiment 1 and Experiment 2); furthermore, relevant neural processes were explored using event-related potentials (Experiment 3). Experiment 1 showed that individuals with depleted self-control resources had lower self-control behavior and individuals performing a ritual had higher self-control behavior. Experiment 2 showed that individuals with depleted self-control resources exhibited more deceptive behaviors and individuals performing a ritual exhibited fewer deceptive behaviors; furthermore, ritual reduced deceptive behaviors in individuals with depleted self-control resources. Experiment 3 found that individuals with depleted self-control resources had larger P2 amplitudes after performing a ritual. Moreover, individuals with depleted self-control resources had larger LPP amplitudes over parietal sites after performing a ritual. These findings suggested that performing ritual may be an effective measure of inhibiting individuals with depleted self-control resources from engaging in deceptive behavior. Our findings verify the ego-depletion model and provide a new perspective for reducing deceptive behaviors in individuals with depleted self-control resources. We provide evidence that rituals could modulate deceptive behaviors in individuals with depleted self-control resources. This reveals that performing rituals may be an effective measure for inhibiting individuals with depleted self-control resources from engaging in deceptive behavior.

ABSTRACT

The biocatalytic design of nanomaterials with enzyme-like activity is considered a reliable and promising toolkit for the generation of diagnostic agents in complex biological microenvironments. However, the preparation of nanomaterials while maintaining a high catalytic activity in tumor cells (pH 6.0-6.5) poses a prominent challenge. Herein, we constructed a biomimetic enzyme-trigged dual-mode system with colorimetry at 652 nm and photothermal biosensors to detect glutathione based on hollow MnO2-nanosheet-decorated Ag nanowires (Ag@MnO2) as an oxidase-like nanozyme. As expected, Ag@MnO2 catalyzed the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the absence of H2O2, leading to a blue-colored oxidized TMB (oxTMB) that displayed oxidase-like activity in pH 6.0. Interestingly, the portable dual-mode colorimetry and photothermal method for GSH was developed based on the redox reaction between GSH and oxTMB. This detection method exhibited a wide linear range of 0.1-55 µM for GSH with a low detection limit of 0.08 µM. This work highlights a new insight into nanotechnology by taking advantage of biomimetic design in biological analysis.

ABSTRACT

The Li dendrite issue is the major barrier that limits the implement of Li metal anode practically, especially at high current density. From the perspective of the nucleation and growth mechanism of the Li dendrite, we rationally develop a novel Prussian blue analogues (PBA)-derived separator, where tuning the metal ions bestows the PBAs with open metal site to confine anion movement and thereby afford a high Li+ transference number (0.78), and PBA with ordered micropores could act as an ionic sieve to selectively extract Li+ and thereby homogenize Li+ flux. This demonstrates a highly reversible Li plating/stripping cycling for 3000 h at a practically high current density (5.0 mA cm-2). Consequently, a high loading Li||LiFeO4 battery (∼10.0 mg cm-2) demonstrates ultralong cycling life at high current densities (∼5.1 mA cm-2). This work highlights the prospect of optimizing PBAs in regulating ion transport behavior to enable high-power Li metal batteries.

ABSTRACT

Heat release of coal combustion in an oxygen-lean and multi-gas environment is a common phenomenon, coalfield fires caused by it can lead to serious environmental destruction and loss of coal resources. Simultaneous thermal analysis experiments for Bulianta (BLT, high-volatile bituminous coal) and Yuwu coal (YW, anthracite) in 21vol.%O2/79vol.%N2 and 15vol.%O2/5vol.%CO2/80vol.%N2 were carried out to study the law of heat release. Based on the TG-DTG-DSC curves, the combustion characteristic parameters were analyzed. Decreasing O2 concentration caused a significant reduction of local reactivity and further the decreasing maximum heat release rate for low-rank coal, while increasing CO2 concentration caused a significant thermal lag effect and further the increasing maximum heat release rate for high-rank coal. The relationship between the heat release rate and the reaction rate constant was quantitatively analyzed. At the increasing stage of the heat release rate, the heat release rate of the two coals increased conforming to ExpGro1 exponential model. At the decreasing stage of the heat release rate, the heat release rate of YW coal decreased exponentially with the reaction rate constant, while the heat release rate of BLT coal decreased linearly. Regardless of the atmospheres, the conversion rates corresponding to maximum heat release rate of BLT and YW coal were about 0.80 and 0.50, respectively, indicating that the coal rank played a dominant role. The results are helpful to understand the heat release process of coal oxygen-lean combustion in O2/CO2/N2.

ABSTRACT

Flame-retardant water-blown rigid polyurethane foams (RPUFs) modified by ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and diethyl ethylphosphonate (DEEP) were synthesized by a one-pot free-rising method. We performed scanning electron microscopy (SEM), compression strength tests, acoustic absorption measurements and thermogravimetric analysis, as well as limited oxygen index, vertical burning and cone calorimeter tests to investigate the mechanical properties, acoustic performance and flame retardancy of the foams. SEM confirmed that the open-cell structures of the foams were successfully constructed with the introduction of a cell-opening agent. Upon using 20 php APP, the average acoustic absorption coefficient of the foam reached 0.535 in an acoustic frequency range of 1500-5000 Hz. The results of thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated that the incorporation of APP and DEEP can effectively restrain mass loss of RPUFs during pyrolysis. In particular, the compressive strength of a foam composite containing 5 php APP and 15 php DEEP increased to 188.77 kPa and the LOI value reached 24.9%. In a vertical burning test and a cone calorimeter test, the joint use of APP and DEEP endowed RPUFs with a V-0 rating and they attained a THR value of 23.43 MJ/m2. Moreover, the addition of APP improved the acoustic absorption performance of the foam, verified by acoustic absorption measurements. Considering potential applications, the formulation containing 15 php APP and 5 php DEEP could be used in the preparation of a new flame-retardant acoustic absorption rigid polyurethane foam.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to identify important miRNAs and their target genes involved in cell apoptosis in intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) patients. METHODS: The dataset, GSE63492, was obtained from the gene expression omnibus platform. After preprocessing, the differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) and their target genes were identified using the Limma package and miRWalk2.0 database, respectively. The clusterProfiler package in R was used to perform functional enrichment analysis of these target genes. Subsequently, protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and subnet clusters of the coregulated genes were conducted using the STRING database and MCODE, respectively. Further, the co-regulatory network of the key miRNAs and PPI networks were visualized using Cytoscape. Finally, cell apoptosis-related pathways and the genes enriched in these pathways were identified. RESULTS: The genes targeted by the upregulated (hsa-miR-302c-5p, hsa-miR-631, hsa-let-7f-1-3p, hsa-miR-3675-3p, and hsa-miR-585-3p) and downregulated miRNAs (hsa-miR-185-5p, hsa-miR-486-5p, hsa-miR-4306, and hsa-miR-4674) were interrelated with cell apoptosis-related pathways. MAPK1 and MAPK3 were targeted by hsa-miR-185-5p, while GSK3B was targeted hsa-miR-4306, hsa-miR-486-5p, hsa-miR-185-5p, hsa-let-7f-1-3p, and hsa-miR-631. Besides, MAPK3 and VEGFA were regulated by hsa-miR-3675-3p and hsa-miR-631, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The expression of GSK3B may be coregulated by miR-4306, miR-185-5p, miR-486-5p, hsa-let-7f-1-3p, and miR-631 and may affect IDD development. Besides, miR-185-5p and miR-3675-3p may control nucleus pulposus (NP) cell apoptosis through the MAPK signaling pathway in IDD patients. VEGFA expression may be regulated by miR-631, and help maintain NP cell survival in IDD patients. Our findings may help guide further research into the role of miRNAs in IDD progression.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of positive feedback closed-loop management system (PFCMS) protocol in influencing parents' decision about pregnancy continuation in pregnancies diagnosed with omphalocele. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients who were diagnosed with fetal omphalocele prior to 20 weeks' gestation by ultrasound and were referred to Fetal Care Center at a mainland Chinese medical center during an 11-year period. Two management strategies were offered during the two stages of the study period: a single consultant with a routine protocol and a multidisciplinary support team with PFCMS, respectively. We analyzed the two protocols influencing parents' decision about pregnancy continuation. RESULTS: Forty-nine patients diagnosed with fetal omphalocele were included in this study. In Group A including 16 patients with routine protocol during the first stage of the study period, the majority opted for termination, and only five continued the pregnancy. In Group B including 33 patients with PFCMS during the second stage of the study period, less than one third chose TOP, and 23 ended in live births. There was a significantly lower TOP rate in patients treated with the PFCMS protocol. CONCLUSION: The PFCMS protocol may be an efficient approach in managing pregnancies complicated by omphalocele, which may help in preventing unnecessary pregnancy terminations.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a typical disease of atherosclerosis, most commonly influencing the lower extremities. In patients with PAD, revascularization remains a preferred treatment strategy. Buyang Huanwu decoction (BHD) is a popular Chinese herbal prescription which has showed effects of cardiovascular protection through conducting antioxidant, antiapoptotic, and anti-inflammatory effects. Here, we intend to study the effect of BHD on promoting revascularization via the Akt/GSK3ß/NRF2 pathway in diabetic hindlimb ischemia (HLI) model of mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All db/db mice (n = 60) were randomly divided into 6 groups by table of random number. (1) Sham group (N = 10): 7-0 suture thread passed through the underneath of the femoral artery and vein without occlusion. The remaining 5 groups were treated differently on the basis of the HLI (the femoral artery and vein from the inguinal ligament to the knee joint were transected and the vascular stump was ligated with 7-0 silk sutures) model: (2) HLI+NS group (N = 15): 0.2 ml NS was gavaged daily for 3 days before modeling and 14 days after occlusion; (3) HLI+BHD group (N = 15): 0.2 ml BHD (20 g/kg/day) was gavaged daily for 3 days before modeling and 14 days after occlusion; (4) HLI+BHD+sh-NC group (N = 8): local injection of adenovirus vector carrying the nonsense shRNA (Ad-GFP) in the hindlimbs of mice before treatment; (5) HLI+BHD+sh-NRF2 group (N = 8): knockdown of NRF2 in the hindlimbs of mice by local intramuscular injection of adenovirus vector carrying NRF2 shRNA (Ad-NRF2-shRNA) before treatment; and (6) HLI+BHD+LY294002 group (N = 4): intravenous injection of LY294002 (1.5 mg/kg) once a day for 14 days on the basis of the HLI+BHD group. Laser Doppler examination, vascular cast, and immunofluorescence staining were applied to detect the revascularization of lower limbs in mice. Western blot analysis was used to detect the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), interleukin-1beta (IL-1ß), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor- (TNF-) α, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), NAD(P)H dehydrogenase quinone-1 (NQO-1), catalase (CAT), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), phosphorylated protein kinase B (p-AKT), and phosphorylated glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (p-GSK3ß). HE staining was used to assess the level of muscle tissue damage and inflammation in the lower extremities. Local multipoint injection of Ad-NRF2-shRNA was used to knock down NRF2, and qPCR was applied to detect the mRNA level of NRF2. The blood glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, MDA, and SOD levels of mice were tested using corresponding kits. The SPSS 20.0 software and GraphPad Prism 6.05 were used to do all statistics. Values of P < 0.05 were considered as statistically significant. Results and Conclusions. BHD could enhance the revascularization of lower limbs in HLI mice, while BHD has no effect on blood glucose and lipid level in db/db mice (P > 0.05). BHD could elevate the protein expression of VEGF, HO-1, NQO-1, and CAT (P < 0.05) and decrease the expression of IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α (P < 0.05) in HLI mice. Meanwhile, BHD could activate NRF2 and promote the phosphorylation of AKT/GSK3ß during revascularization (P < 0.05). In contrast, knockdown of NRF2 impaired the protective effects of BHD on HLI (P < 0.05). LY294002 inhibited the upregulation of NRF2 activated by BHD through inhibiting the phosphorylation of the AKT/GSK3ß pathway (P < 0.05). The present study demonstrated that BHD could promote revascularization on db/db mice with HLI through targeting antioxidation, anti-inflammation, and angiogenesis via the AKT/GSK3ß/NRF2 pathway.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study was to explore the effects of teramethylpyrazine (TMP) administered in conjunction with neural stem cell transplantation on motor function, pathological lesions and the Janus kinase (JAK)2/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 signal transduction pathway in rats following acute spinal cord injury (SCI). METHODS: Female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into sham, model, neural stem cells (NSCs) and NSCs+TMP groups. Motor function was evaluated using the Basso, Beattie, Bresnahan scale. Spinal cord neuropathies and neuron apoptosis were observed by HE and TUNEL staining. The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), Nogo-A, JAK2 and p-JAK2 protein levels were measured by western blot analysis. RESULTS: NSCs+TMP significantly improved rat motor function, attenuated impaired spinal cords, and decreased cellular apoptosis, compared with NSCs therapy alone (P < 0.05). In addition, expression of BDNF protein was significantly higher in NSCs+TMP rats compared with other groups regardless of time postinjury (P < 0.05). The highest expression levels of Nogo-A protein were observed in the model group. The expression of p-JAK2 in the NSCs+TMP group was relatively lower than the model and NSCs groups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In rats with SCI, NSCs+TMP effectively improved motor function and offered spinal cord protection by increasing BDNF and decreasing Nogo-A levels, as well as inhibiting the JAK2/STAT3 signal transduction pathway, suggesting that TMP could be a useful agent in NSCs transplantation in the treatment of SCI.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Donation behavior plays a crucial role in promoting the development of social and public welfare undertakings. Previous studies have partially explored the influencing factors of donation behavior, but effective methods for boosting individuals' donation behavior remain unclear. Based on the resource dependence theory, our present study further explored the promoting effect of self-affirmation on the relationship among cost, self-control, and individuals' donation behavior, and provided empirical basis for boosting individuals' donation behavior. METHODS: In preliminary experiment, Carlson's real donation paradigm was conducted to examine the effect of cost on individuals' donation behavior. In experiment 1, we examined the effects of cost, self-control ability, and self-affirmation on individuals' donation behavior. Individuals with high or low self-control ability were assigned to complete the experimental induction of self-affirmation or non-affirmation. Subsequently, all participants completed the donation task under three cost conditions same as preliminary experiment. In experiment 2, we examined the effects of cost, self-control resource, and self-affirmation on individuals' donation behavior. Participants were assigned to complete the different Stroop task to induce the state of self-control resource exhaustion or non-exhaustion. Then, they completed the priming of self-affirmation or non-affirmation same as experiment 1. Finally, all participants completed the donation task under three cost conditions same as preliminary experiment. RESULTS: The results of preliminary experiment indicated that participants engaged in more donation behavior under low- and medium-cost conditions compared with high-cost condition. The results of experiment 1 demonstrated that self-affirmation exerted a promoting effect on the donation behavior for individuals with low self-control ability under low-, medium-, and high-cost conditions. The results of experiment 2 demonstrated that self-affirmation promoted the donation behavior of individuals with self-control resource exhaustion under low-, medium-, and high-cost conditions. CONCLUSION: Self-affirmation could promote the donation behavior of individuals with low self-control ability and those with self-control resource exhaustion, whether donation's cost was high or low. Self-affirmation plays a crucial role for boosting individuals' donation behavior.
