ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this paper is to conduct a bibliometric analysis to examine the research status and development trend of anterior cruciate ligament injury and reconstruction in children and adolescents over the past 20 years. DESIGN: Descriptive Research. METHODS: This study obtained information regarding studies on Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction in Children and Adolescents from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Visual and bibliometric analysis were conducted using VOSviewer, Origin 2022, Pajek64 5.18and Excel 2019. These analytic tools facilitated the analysis of various aspects, including countries/regions, institutions, authors, journals and keywords related to the research. RESULTS: From 2003 to 2023, a total of 1328 articles were retrieved in WOS, and 637 articles were selected by two authors. The most productive institutions are Childrens Hosp Philadelphia, Kocher, ms. Their articles have the highest number of publications and citations. The American journal of sports medicine is the most frequently cited journal for articles on anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in children and adolescents. The most common keywords used in these articles were "anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction", "injury, children, adolescent", and "skeletally immature patients". CONCLUSIONS: This study provides valuable insights into the research focus of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in children and adolescents. In recent years, there has been significant attention paid to areas of "the return to sport, re-repture rate and functional recovery after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction" in this specific population. These aspects have emerged as key directions for future research in this field.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the degree of graft healing after "tension suspension" reconstruction of "Sherman II" anterior cruciate ligament injuries versus non-remnant preserving anatomical reconstruction and to compare the clinical outcomes of the two procedures. METHOD: The clinical data of 64 patients were retrospectively included. There were 31 cases in the "tension suspension" remnant-preserving reconstruction group and 33 cases in the non-remnant-preserving anatomical reconstruction group. The International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) score, the Tegner score, and the Lysholm activity score were assessed preoperatively and at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years postoperatively, respectively. The signal/noise quotient (SNQ) of the grafts was measured at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years after surgery to quantitatively evaluate the maturity of the grafts after ACL reconstruction; the fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of the reconstructed ACL region of interest (ROI) were measured using DTI. RESULT: A total of 64 patients were included in the study. The mean SNQ values of the grafts in the 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years postoperative remnant-preserving reconstruction (RP) groups were lower than those in the non-remnant-preserving (NRP) reconstruction group, with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). At each postoperative follow-up, the SNQ values of the tibial and femoral sides of the RP group were lower than those of the NRP group; the SNQ values of the femoral side of the grafts in both groups were higher than those of the tibial side, and the differences were statistically significant (p < 0.05). At 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years postoperatively, the FA and ADC values of the grafts were lower in the RP group than in the NRP group, and the differences were statistically significant (p < 0.05); the IKDC score and Lysholm score of the RP group were higher than the NRP group, which was statistically significant (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: For Sherman II ACL injury, the graft healing including ligamentization and revascularization at 2 years after the "tension suspension" remnant-preserving reconstruction was better than that of non-remnant-preserving anatomic reconstruction.

ABSTRACT

Anterior cruciate ligament injury is the most common sports injury in orthopaedics, which can adversely affect knee joint function and exercise of patients. Using arthroscopy to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament has become the first choice for treating anterior cruciate ligament rupture. However, different degrees of articular cartilage injury of the knee can be observed in patients after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. More importantly, the articular cartilage injury after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction indicates that it will develop into osteoarthritis in the long term. It is of great significance to fully understand the factors that lead to the occurrence and development of cartilage injury. This article reviews the effects of surgical methods, meniscus status, different grafts, time from injury to surgical intervention, postoperative knee joint stability, postoperative rehabilitation, knee joint anatomical factors, and demographic characteristics of patients on articular cartilage degeneration after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. The present review provides insights into the anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, which can be used to investigate new treatment strategies to delay and prevent the progress of osteoarthritis. At the same time, it provides a holistic understanding of the influence of multiple factors on cartilage lesions after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

ABSTRACT

Disulfide-rich peptides (DRPs) are a class of peptides that are constrained through two or more disulfide bonds. Though natural DRPs have been extensively exploited for developing protein binders or potential therapeutics, their synthesis and re-engineering to bind new targets are not straightforward due to difficulties in handling the disulfide pairing problem. Rationally designed DRPs with an intrinsically orthogonal disulfide pairing propensity provide an alternative to the natural scaffolds for developing functional DRPs. Herein we report the use of tandem CXPen/PenXC motifs ((C) cysteine; (Pen) penicillamine; (X) any residue) for directing the oxidative folding of peptides. Diverse tricyclic peptides were designed and synthesized by varying the pattern of C/Pen residues and incorporating a tandem CXPen/PenXC motif into peptides. The folding of these peptides was determined primarily by C/Pen patterns and tolerated to sequence manipulations. The applicability of the designed C/Pen-DRPs was demonstrated by designing protein binders using an epitope grafting strategy. This study thus demonstrates the potential of using orthogonal disulfide pairing to design DRP scaffolds with new structures and functions, which would greatly benefit the development of multicyclic peptide ligands and therapeutics.

ABSTRACT

To understand the relationships among dominant species of cephalopods in offshore nor-thern South China Sea, we examined the niche characteristics of these dominant species from both spatial and temporal dimensions using the index of relative importance (IRI), the niche breadth and overlap indices based on fishery resources data from the bottom-trawl survey for four seasons during 2014-2015. The results showed that five dominant species of cephalopods were recorded for four seasons, including Loligo edulis, L. chinensis, L. beka, Sepia esculenta, and L. duvaucelii. The first two species were shared by all seasons. Compared with historical data, the composition of dominant cephalopods species had changed. The cephalopods resource exhibited obvious temporal and spatial variations. Stock density was higher in the sea area extending from the southern Hainan Island to eastern Guangdong Province than that in Beibu Gulf. The seasonal variation was characte-rized by the largest in summer but the smallest in winter. The temporal and spatial niche analysis showed that there was inconsistent in the order between temporal and spatial niche breadths for domi-nant species. L. edulis (1.32) and L. chinensis (3.90) occupied the largest temporal and spatial niche breadths, respectively. The smallest of temporal and spatial niche breadths were shown for S. esculenta (0.98) and L. duvaucelii (2.04), respectively. Though the temporal niche overlap was numerically larger than the spatial niche overlap, both of them had higher values in interspecies among L. edulis, L. chinensis, L. beka, and the lower overlap for the species pairs between L. duvaucelii and other species. The result of correlation analysis suggested that niche breadth exhibited a significant negative correlation with variation in abundance on both temporal and spatial scales. The ecological niche could reflect the tempo-spatial changes of species resource, which enriched the traditional methods of fishery communities.

ABSTRACT

Nerve regeneration can be promoted using nerve guide conduits (NGCs). Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are often used to prepare conductive NGCs, however, the major concern for their applications is the final location of the implanted CNTs in vivo. Herein, photoluminescent multiwalled CNTs (MWCNTs) were prepared and electrospun with poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA), followed by shaping into multichannel NGCs for repairing of injured rat sciatic nerve, thereby the distribution of CNTs in vivo could be detected via bioimaging. Photoluminescent MWCNTs (MWCNT-FITC) were prepared by functionalization with poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) and fluorescein-isothiocyanate-isomer I (FITC) subsequently. The conductivity of the PLGA/MWCNT-FITC fibers was approx. 10-4 S/cm at 3 wt % MWCNTs. Compared with PLGA fibers, Schwann cells on PLGA/MWCNT-FITC fibers matured at a faster rate, accordingly, nerve regeneration was promoted by the PLGA/MWCNT-FITC NGC. With a confocal laser scanning microscope and small-animal imaging system, the location of MWCNTs was detected. Alongside the degradation of PLGA, MWCNTs intended to aggregate and were entrapped in the regenerated nerve tissue without migrating into surrounding tissues and other organs (liver, kidneys, and spleen). This study provides a useful characterization method for MWCNTs and the guidance for in vivo applications of MWCNTs in tissue engineering.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To investigate the efficacy and safety of a combined oral contraceptive containing estradiol valerate and dienogest (EV/DNG) in healthy Asian women. METHODS: In this multicenter Phase III study, women received oral EV/DNG in a 28-day regimen for 13 cycles. The primary efficacy endpoint was the number of unintended pregnancies, measured by the Pearl Index (PI); secondary efficacy endpoints included bleeding pattern and cycle control parameters. Adverse events were monitored during the study and overall satisfaction with treatment was determined on completion of the study. RESULTS: A total of 954 Asian women (97.7% of subjects assigned to study medication; mean age 33.4 years) were treated. Five pregnancies were reported during EV/DNG treatment over 796.34 relevant woman-years of exposure, giving an unadjusted PI of 0.63 and a cumulative failure rate of 0.0049; 3 pregnancies during EV/DNG treatment over 760.35 relevant woman-years of exposure gave an adjusted PI of 0.39. The bleeding pattern improved during the reporting periods within the study. The proportion of women who experienced withdrawal bleeding decreased with treatment (84.9% of women during Cycle 1 vs 79.3% in Cycle 13), and the mean length of withdrawal bleeding decreased with treatment (4.2 vs 3.4 days). The number and maximum length of intracyclic bleeding/spotting episodes also decreased with EV/DNG. EV/DNG was well tolerated, and 92% of women included in the study were very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with EV/DNG. CONCLUSION: EV/DNG showed high contraceptive efficacy, was well tolerated in Asian women, and may be effectively used in this population. ABSTRACT

The superoxide anion (O2•-) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) are important reactive oxygen species (ROS) used as biomarkers in physiological and pathological processes. ROS generation is closely related to the development of a variety of inflammatory diseases. However, the changes of ROS are difficult to ascertain with in situ tracing of the inflammation process by real-time monitoring, owing to the short half-lives of ROS and high tissue autofluorescence in vivo. Here we developed a new near-infrared (NIR) ratiometric fluorescence imaging approach by using a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobe for real-time monitoring of O2•- and •OH generation and also by using in situ tracing of the inflammation process in vivo. The proposed nanoprobe was composed of PEG functionalized GQDs as the energy donor connecting to hydroIR783, serving as both the O2•-/•OH recognizing ligand and the energy acceptor. The nanoprobe not only exhibited a fast response to O2•- and •OH but also presented good biocomapatibility as well as a high photostability and signal-to-noise ratio. We have demonstrated that the proposed NIR ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobe can monitor the changes of O2•- and •OH in living RAW 264.7 cells via a drug mediating inflammation model and further realized visual monitoring of the change of O2•- and •OH in mice for in situ tracing of the inflammation process. Our design may provide a new paradigm for long-term and real-time imaging applications for in vivo tracing of the pathological process related to the inflammatory diseases.

ABSTRACT

Bone tissue engineering using bone mesenchymal stromal cells (BMSCs) is a multidisciplinary strategy that requires biodegradable scaffold, cell, various promoting cues to work simultaneously. Electrical stimulation (ES) is known able to promote osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs, but it is interesting to know how can it play the strongest promotion effect. To strengthen local ES on BMSCs, parallel-aligned conductive nanofibers were electrospun from the mixtures of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and used for cell culture. Osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs was conducted by applying ES (direct current, 1.5 V, 1.5 h/day) perpendicular to the fiber direction during the day 1-7, day 8-14, or day 15-21 period of the osteoinductive culture. In comparison with ES-free groups, bone-related markers and genes were found significantly up-regulated when ES was applied on BMSCs growing on nanofibers having higher conductivity. When the ES was applied at the earlier stage of osteoinductive culture, the promotion effect on osteogenic differentiation would be stronger. In the presence of a BMP blocker, the down-regulated expressions of bone-related genes were able to be slightly recovered by ES, especially when the ES was applied at the beginning of osteoinductive culture (i.e. day 1-7). The promotion effect generated by ES in the early stage was found sustainable to later stages of differentiation, while those ES applied at later stages of differentiation should have missed the optimal point. In other words, later ES was not so necessary in inducing the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res Part A: 105A: 3369-3383, 2017.

ABSTRACT

Background. The Woman's Condom, a second-generation female condom designed for acceptability, is poised for introduction in China. Method. This single-arm study was conducted among 60 couples in China in 2010 to assess acceptability of the Woman's Condom. Results. Male participants reported that ease of handling, inserting, and removing the device improved significantly from first to fourth use. Female and male participants reported that comfort during insertion, feel of lubricant during insertion, comfort/fit of outer ring during use, and overall comfort improved significantly from first to fourth use. Further, at fourth use, female participants reported significant improvement in the comfort of the feel of the condom material and lubricant. Female and male participants reported that satisfaction with stability and sensation during sex and ability to achieve orgasm improved significantly from first to fourth use. At fourth use, female participants reported statistically significant improvement in sensation compared to using nothing. A majority of participants (78%) stated that they would use the Woman's Condom in the future, primarily due to its dual protection profile. Conclusion. This study has shown that, in China, the Woman's Condom appears to be acceptable to married couples. User experience contributes to improvement in many aspects of device acceptability.

ABSTRACT

The Malabar trevally Carangoides malabaricus is a widely distributed inshore fish species and commercially important in some tropical regions. This study presented the complete mitochondrial genome of C. malabaricus as well as its phylogenetic position in Carangidae. The entire sequence was 16,561 bp in length, including the typical structure of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, 1 control regions and 1 L-strand replication origin. The arrangement of the genes was in line with other teleosts. The genome was composed of 29.6% C, 27.8% A, 26.2% T and 16.4% G, showing an obvious anti G bias. Phylogenetic analyses using the concatenated sequence of the protein-coding genes showed similar results in the Neighbour-Joining and Bayesian inference trees. Three clades were formed as Subfamilies Caranginae, Seriolinae and Trachinotinae in Carangidae based on the current dataset. C. malabaricus was most closely related to the species in the same genus.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety of mifepristone combined with oral or vaginal misoprostol for termination of pregnancy between 8 and 16 weeks of gestation. METHODS: This was a randomized, multi-center, open clinical trial. A total of 625 women at 8-16 weeks of gestation were randomized to receive 200 mg oral mifepristone followed by either oral misoprostol 400 µg every 3 hours or vaginal misoprostol 400 µg every 6 hours for a maximum of 4 doses 36-48 hours later. There were 417 women in oral group with 198 at 8-9 weeks and 219 at 10-16 weeks, while 208 women in vaginal group with 99 at 8-9 weeks and 109 at 10-16 weeks. The outcome measures were the success abortion rate, induction to abortion interval, the amount of bleeding, reoccurrence of menstruation and adverse events. RESULTS: Abortion rate was significantly higher in vaginal group [98.1% (202/206)] than that in oral group [94.0% (390/415), P = 0.023]; concerning termination of pregnancy at 8-9 weeks and 10-16 weeks respectively, there were no significant differences between oral and vaginal groups (P = 0.156, P = 0.073). The induction to abortion interval was no significant difference in oral and vaginal group in different gestational weeks (P = 0.238, P = 0.273). The average induction to abortion interval was (4.1 ± 6.6) hours and (6.0 ± 4.5) hours respectively in terminating 8-9 weeks and 10-16 weeks of gestation. Concerning the amount of bleeding within 2 hours of placenta expulsion, there was significant difference between oral group [(63 ± 46) ml] and vaginal group [(55 ± 45) ml] in terminating 8-9 weeks of gestation (P = 0.047), while there was no significant difference between groups in terminating 10-16 weeks of gestation [oral group (76 ± 52) ml versus vaginal group (76 ± 61) ml, P = 0.507]. The reoccurrence of menstruation was about 37 days in both oral and vaginal groups. Two cases of incomplete abortion were serious adverse events (SAE) relating to treatment. The common adverse events (AE) of nausea and vomiting were significantly higher in oral group [57.2% (239/417), 36.3% (151/417)] than those in vaginal group [45.4% (94/208), 26.1% (54/208); P = 0.005, 0.011]. CONCLUSION: Oral or vaginal misoprostol combined with mifepristone, is effective and safe for termination of pregnancy between 8 and 16 weeks of gestation.

ABSTRACT

While combined oral contraceptives are a popular choice in developed Western countries, they are used by only 1% of women who are married or in a relationship in the People's Republic of China. The purpose of this review is to describe the efficacy and safety of the combined oral contraceptive containing ethinylestradiol (EE) 20 µg/drospirenone 3 mg taken in a 24/4 regimen (YAZ®; Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Berlin, Germany) by Chinese women and to compare these results with those in women assessed in the international studies. Studies of EE 20 µg/drospirenone 3 mg in three different indications (contraception, acne, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder [PMDD]) have been conducted in Chinese women. The results of these three studies indicate that the EE 20 µg/drospirenone 3 mg combined oral contraceptive is a good long-term contraceptive option in Chinese women, providing 99% contraceptive protection over the observed 1-year treatment period, and additionally had a favorable effect on moderate acne vulgaris and relieved the symptoms of PMDD. The contraceptive efficacy, improvement in acne, and relief from PMDD symptoms observed in these studies did not differ from the effects observed in other international studies of EE 20 µg/drospirenone 3 mg, indicating that EE 20 µg/drospirenone 3 mg is as effective in Chinese women as in other ethnicities. Further, EE 20 µg/drospirenone 3 mg demonstrated a similar safety and tolerability profile in women enrolled in the Chinese and international trials, with no unexpected adverse events reported in any of the three Chinese trials. Overall, the efficacy, tolerability, and degree of non-contraceptive benefits with EE 20 µg/drospirenone 3 mg appear similar in Chinese women when compared with those reported in larger studies done at other international centers.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Although surveys conducted in Western countries have shown that the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS; Mirena(®)) is well accepted by European women, its acceptance by Chinese women is not yet clearly known. The purpose of this study was to analyze the experiences and levels of satisfaction with Mirena among Chinese women living in 12 different cities. METHODS: In total, 1,021 women who attended 21 medical centers for insertion of Mirena were invited to complete a questionnaire regarding their contraceptive decision at baseline (preinsertion), and two further questionnaires on their experience and satisfaction with Mirena at 3-6 months and 1 year after insertion. RESULTS: At baseline, 36% of women self-reported heavy or very heavy menstrual bleeding, while 41% reported normal bleeding. The majority of women (98%) were satisfied with the preinsertion counseling, during which contraceptive reliability was identified as the most important reason for considering Mirena. Continuation rates for Mirena were 99% at 3-6 months and 93% at 12 months after insertion, and most women (92% and 93%, respectively) had less bleeding at these times. The percentage of women who rated Mirena as better than their previous contraceptive method was 63%. Overall, around 90% of respondents were very satisfied or rather satisfied with Mirena, and 64% stated that they would recommend it to their friends. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that continuation and satisfaction rates with Mirena were very high, and that the device is well accepted by Chinese women.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of the intrauterine device (IUD) insertion on the mental state of women. METHODS: From Jan. 2009 to Jun. 2010, a multi-center clinical observational study was performed. Totally 641 women were selected in the six provinces' 18 family planning service stations and hospitals for IUD insertion surgery study. Analysis of the change of women's mental state which was evaluated by symptom checklist-90 (SCL-90) scale before and after IUD insertion surgery. RESULTS: Before and after IUD insertion surgery, 10 factors' scores in SCL-90 of the observed objects were between 1.1 to 1.2, total scores were 107±27 and 105±25, respectively. Before and after surgery, total average score both were 1.2, the average score of positive items both were 2.1. The difference of the above results were not statistically significance (all P>0.05). Preoperative and postoperative, the rate of positive items was 9.2%-19.6% and 7.7%-17.6%, respectively. In addition to anxiety and fear, the rate of other factors' positive items postoperative was significantly lower than those in the preoperative (all P<0.05). The incidence of the observed objects postoperative of each factor score, "deteriorated" was in the range of 4.9% to 23.0%, "improved" was in the range of 26.3%-50.1%. The incidence of total scores, "deterioration" was 28.8% (166/575), "improved" was 45.6% (262/575). The incidence of the average score of positive items, "deterioration" was 3.7% (21/575), "improved" was 52.3% (301/575). Logistic analysis showed that, in addition to unit level, there were no other significant influencing factors for women' mental state of postoperative (all P>0.05). CONCLUSION: IUD insertion surgery has no adverse effect on women's mental state.

ABSTRACT

The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARG) is a member of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily that has attracted considerable attention as a candidate gene for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) based on its function as a key factor involved in the regulation of adipocyte differentiation as well as lipid and glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Many studies have examined the association between P12A polymorphism (rs1801282) in the PPARG gene and risk of GDM, but the results have been inconsistent. To derive a more precise estimation of the relationship, a meta-analysis of 2,858 GDM patients and 6,890 controls from nine published case-control studies was performed. An overall random effects odds ratio of 0.89 (95 % confidence interval [CI]: 0.77-1.04, P = 0.15) was found for 12A allele. In the subgroup analysis by ethnicity, significantly decreased risks were found in East Asians, while no significant associations were detected among Caucasian and Middle Eastern populations. Similar results were also observed using dominant genetic model. This meta-analysis suggested an overall weak association between the P12A polymorphism and GDM risk among East Asians. However, additional very large-scale studies are warranted to provide conclusive evidence on the effects of the PPARG gene on risk of GDM.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy, safety and acceptability of a newly developed benzalkonium chloride (BZK) contraceptive gel which was compared to nonoxynol-9 (N-9) gel. STUDY DESIGN: A Phase II, multicenter, randomized, controlled study at three Chinese centers was conducted to compare 120 women who used BZK gel with 120 women who used N-9 gel for 6 months. Contraceptive efficacy was assessed by pregnancy rate, and safety was evaluated by adverse events report, gynecologic examination, Papanicolaou smears, leukorrhea test, and blood and urine tests. The acceptability was assessed through follow-up visit forms and a questionnaire at the 6-month visit. RESULTS: Net cumulative rates in the BZK group at 6 months were as follows: follow-up 100%, terminations 5.1%, pregnancy 1.7%, medical reasons 0% and fear of failure 3.4%. At 6 months, the rates in the N-9 group were as follows: follow-up 99.2%, terminations 9.4%, pregnancy 0.9%, medical reasons 2.5%, fear of failure 3.4% and other personal reasons 2.6%. No significant difference in pregnancy rate and termination rate between the two groups was found (p>.05). Seven cases in the BZK group (5.8%) complained about leukorrhagia and vaginal irritation symptoms (itching and burning) at 6 months, while 16 cases in the N-9 group (13.3%) had similar complaints (p<.05). This significant difference continued to exist until the 6-month visit. The general satisfaction rate for BZK gel use (72.8%) is significantly higher than that for N-9 gel (42.5%). CONCLUSION: The optimized BZK gel is comparable to N-9 gel in terms of contraceptive efficacy and safety, and may be more acceptable to Chinese users.

ABSTRACT

Highly blue-luminescent nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) are obtained by hydrothermal treatment of graphene oxide in the presence of ammonia. The yield of N-GQDs is about 8.7% in weight. A high quantum yield of maximum 24.6% at an excitation wavelength of 340 nm is achieved. They are applied for bioimaging of HeLa cells, and showed bright luminescence and excellent biocompatibility.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of treating abortive remnants of induced abortion with different doses of mifepristone. METHODS: A total of 101 women undergoing post-abortion treatment at our family planning clinic from October 2009 to February 2011 were recruited and divided randomly into 4 groups. They were diagnosed as abortive remnants by ultrasound and blood level of ß-HCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin). Three test groups received different doses of mifepristone and one group as control. The efficacy and safety of four groups were evaluated by clinical observations, ultrasonic examinations and blood level of ß-HCG. RESULTS: The effective rates of mifepristone test and control groups were 61.60% and 21.40% respectively. And there were statistical significances between two groups (P < 0.01). After a 2-week treatment, the changes of blood level of ß-HCG and reduction of residual size tested by ultrasound were better than those of the control group. And there were significant statistical differences (P < 0.01). The group with high dose in short term achieved the best outcomes. After four weeks of treatment, blood level of ß-HCG of test groups had no statistical significance (P > 0.05). There was statistical significance in pairwise comparison on reduction of residual size tested by ultrasound among test groups (P < 0.05). The high-dose group with achieved the largest short-term reduction. Statistical significances existed in the hemostatic time of vaginal hemorrhage and menstrual recovery between three test groups and the control group (P < 0.05). No statistical significance was found in healing time and the occurrence of adverse events among these 3 test groups (both P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Mifepristone is effective in the treatment of induced incomplete abortion. And a short-term large dose offers a better efficacy.
