ABSTRACT

Microglandular adenosis (MGA) and atypical microglandular adenosis (AMGA) are intensely rare and distinctive forms of adenosis of the breast, usually occurring in middle-aged women. Carcinoma arising in MGA is an extremely rare subtype of breast carcinoma, and most reported cases are of invasive carcinoma. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging are accurate imaging modalities for diagnosing these abnormalities. Our goal in this article was to report a rare instance of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) arising from MGA and AMGA in a very young Vietnamese woman who presented with a palpable mass in her right breast for 1 month. During clinical examination and imaging, suspected lesions were found and categorized as BI-RADS 4a. The final histopathological findings confirmed DCIS arising from MGA/AMGA. In this patient, the disease was detected and managed early when the lesion was localized in the duct and there were no signs of invasive ductal carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

Monitoring the actual change in consumption of nicotine (a proxy for smoking) in the population is essential for formulating tobacco control policies. In recent years, wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has been applied as an alternative method to estimate changes in consumption of tobacco and other substances in different communities around the world, with high potential to be used in resource-scarce settings. This study aimed to conduct a WBE analysis in Hanoi, Vietnam, a lower-middle-income-country setting known for high smoking prevalence. Wastewater samples were collected at two sites along a sewage canal in Hanoi during three periods: Period 1 (September 2018), Period 2 (December 2018-January 2019), and Period 3 (December 2019-January 2020). Concentrations of cotinine, 3-hydroxycotinine, and nicotine ranged from 0.73 µg/L to 3.83 µg/L, from 1.09 µg/L to 5.07 µg/L, and from 0.97 µg/L to 9.90 µg/L, respectively. The average mass load of cotinine estimated for our samples was 0.45 ± 0.09 mg/day/person, which corresponds to an estimated daily nicotine consumption of 1.28 ± 0.25 mg/day/person. No weekly trend was detected over the three monitoring periods. We found the amount of nicotine consumption in Period 1 to be significantly lower than in Period 2 and Period 3. Our WBE estimates of smoking prevalence were slightly lower than the survey data. The analysis of benchmarking biomarkers confirmed that cotinine was stable in the samples similar to acesulfame, while paracetamol degraded along the sewer canal. Further refinement of the WBE approach may be required to improve the accuracy of analyzing tobacco consumption in the poor sewage infrastructure setting of Vietnam.

ABSTRACT

Illicit drug use is a serious issue in Vietnam, but information about their prevalence is scarce, mainly based on seizure data. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is an alternative tool for obtaining such information, especially when stigma related to drug use can hinder survey approaches. The study aimed to apply WBE to assess the prevalence of use of a range of illicit drugs in an urban population of Vietnam. A total of 184 wastewater samples were collected at two different sites along a sewage canal, receiving sewage from over 400,000 people in Hanoi, Vietnam, in three different periods between 2018 and 2020. Illicit drugs and their metabolites were measured by direct injection using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The results were back-estimated, normalised to per capita daily consumption for assessement of consumption patterns and trends. Most drugs were detected in all the samples except cocaine, benzoylecgonine, amphetamine indicating a low prevalence of cocaine and amphetamine use. The estimated consumption level of methamphetamine was varied from 119.5 to 553.5 mg/d/1000 pp. The market of illicit drugs in Vietnam has changed from opiates to amphetamine-type simulants, and methamphetamine has replaced heroin as the No.1 drug, its use can be as much as 3 times more than heroin use. Moreover, we observed the considerable and potentially increasing level of ketamine consumption in Hanoi. No statistical difference was found in daily consumption per capita among days of the week for any drugs, both legal (codeine, methadone) and illegal (methamphetamine, MDMA, ketamine and heroin), suggesting the drugs were consumed mainly by regular users. This study provides important information related the illicit drug consumption in Vietnam, which will help to formulate appropriate drug control policies in this country.

ABSTRACT

In this study, Mn2O3/MIL-100(Fe) composite was successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal method and applied for photocatalytic removal of rhodamine B (RhB) in water. The physical and chemical properties of the synthesized materials were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, UV-visible, and BET analyses. Experimental results showed a great enhancement in the photocatalytic ability of the Mn2O3/MIL-100(Fe) composite as compared to individual Mn2O3 or MIL-100(Fe) under visible light and persulfate activation. The affecting factors such as pH, photocatalyst dose, RhB concentration, and Na2S2O8 concentration were investigated to find out the best conditions for efficient photocatalysis. By conducting a radical quenching test, all radicals of HO˙, SO4˙-, 1O2, and O2˙- were found to be important in photocatalytic decomposition. The mechanism was proposed for the enhancement of photocatalytic RhB removal via band potential calculation, charge separation, surface redox reaction, and key reactive oxidation species. With its durability, reusability, and high efficiency, the Mn2O3/MIL-100(Fe) composite emerges as a potential photocatalyst working under visible light for application in wastewater treatment.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Dengue infection has various clinical manifestations, often with unpredictable clinical evolutions and outcomes. Several factors including nutritional status have been studied to find the relationship with dengue severity. However, the nutritional status had conflicting effects on the complication of dengue in some previous studies. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and performed a meta-analysis to analyze the association between nutritional status and the outcome of dengue infection. METHODS: Eleven electronic databases and manual searching of reference lists were used to identify the relevant studies published before August 2013. At least two authors worked independently in every step to select eligible studies and extract data. Dengue severity in the included studies must be classified into three categories: dengue fever (DF), dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS). RESULTS: Thirteen articles that met the inclusion criteria came to final analysis. A meta-analysis using fixed- or random-effects models was conducted to calculate pooled odds ratios (OR) with corresponding 95 % confidence intervals. It has shown that there was no statistically significant association between DHF group and DSS group in malnutritional and overweight/obesity patients with OR: 1.17 (95 % CI: 0.99-1.39), 1.31 (0.91-1.88), respectively. A significantly inverse relation between DF and DHF groups of malnutritional patients was revealed (OR = 0.71, 95 % CI: 0.56-0.90). Our meta-analysis also indicated a statistically significant negative correlation between malnourished children with dengue virus infection and healthy children (OR = 0.46, 95 % CI: 0.3-0.70). When analyzing patients with normal nutrition status, we found out that there was a significantly negative relationship between DHF and DSS groups (0.87; 95 % CI: 0.77-0.99). Other comparisons of DSS with DF/DHF groups, DSS/DHF with DF groups, and DHF with DF groups in normal nutritional patients showed no significant correlation. However, the findings should be interpreted cautiously because all significant associations were lost after removing of the largest study. CONCLUSIONS: Results from previous studies failed to show any solid consistency regarding the association between the nutritional status and dengue infection. Consequently, the effects of nutritional status on dengue disease outcome has been controversial. Further studies are recommended to clarify the impact of nutritional status on dengue infection.
