ABSTRACT

Introduction: The use of assessment tools to measure postnatal mental illness is essential in healthcare settings. However, variations in the types of tools and their reliability in a particular population lead to under-recognition of mental health status in postnatal mothers. The aim of this review is to evaluate the most recent 10 year of research on the validity and reliability of postnatal mental illness assessment tools. Methods: A literature search of studies from online databases PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct was conducted. Results: A total of 59 studies were selected for this review. Several studies utilised multiple assessment tools, and a total of 96 assessment tools were identified and classified into six domains: postnatal blues, postnatal stress, postnatal anxiety, postnatal depression, postnatal psychosis, and postnatal psychological disorder. In this review, EPDS was the most common tool used to identify postnatal depression and anxiety while DASS 21 was the most common tool used to identify postnatal psychological disorder. There is a wide range in preponderance of evidence for the reliability of each assessment tool and there were inconsistencies in assessing the validity of the assessment tools. Conclusion: This review provides information regarding some of the main assessment tools currently available to measure postnatal mental illnesses. There were no standardised tools that were used in a particular setting. The results may differ in different population because there are differences in not only languages and dialects, but also cultural and racial backgrounds, which greatly influences their perception and interpretation of postnatal mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Smoking and consuming alcohol remain hazardous acts to health, which are important to prevent in adolescents. Prosocial behavior has increasingly being noticed to be related with substance use. This study investigated the association between the trying of smoking and alcohol with prosocial behavior among school-going adolescents in Terengganu, Malaysia. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 732 school adolescents aged between 13 and 18 years from 12 secondary schools in Terengganu. Cluster sampling was applied. A validated questionnaire adopted from Global Health School Survey (GSHS) was used and prosocial behavior was assessed using the validated Malay self-rated version of Strength and Difficulty Questionnaire (SDQ). Data were analyzed using SPSS ver25, using multiple logistic regressions for both dependent variables of ever smoking and ever alcohol drinking. RESULTS: Ever smoking was significantly inversely associated with prosocial behavior (p = 0.010, OR: 0.84, CI: 0.74, 0.96); together with other significantly associated factors; namely older age, male gender, poorer family income, and smoking in immediate family members. However, there was no association of the between prosocial behavior with ever alcohol drinking (p = 0.628). CONCLUSION: Prosocial behavior is negatively associated with the trying of smoking in adolescents. Future longitudinal study should be done to investigate the effects of promoting prosocial behavior among adolescents towards the hazardous act.

ABSTRACT

Emotional maturity (EM) is defined as the ability of an individual to respond to situations, control emotions, and behave in an adult manner when dealing with others. EM is associated with adult learning skill, which is an important aspect of professional development as stated in the principles of andragogy. These principles are basically a characteristic feature of adult learning, which is defined as "the entire range of formal, non-formal, and informal learning activities that are undertaken by adults after an initial education and training, which result in the acquisition of new knowledge and skills". The purpose of this study is to find out the influence of EM on adult learning among Years I and II medical students of Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA). The study population included preclinical medical students of UniSZA from Years I and II of the academic session 2015/2016. The convenient sampling technique was used to select the sample. Data were collected using "EM scale" to evaluate emotional level and adult learning scale to assess the adult learning scores. Out of 120 questionnaires, only six response sheets were not complete and the remaining 114 (95%) were complete. Among the study participants, 23.7% (27) and 76.3% (87) were males and females, respectively. The data were then compiled and analyzed using SPSS Version 22. The Pearson's correlation method was used to find the significance of their association. The results revealed a significant correlation between EM and adult learning scores (r=0.40, p<0.001). Thus, the study result supports the prediction, and based on the current findings, it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between EM and adult learning and it has an effect on the students. Medical faculty members should give more emphasis on these aspects to produce health professionals. Henceforward, researchers can expect with optimism that the country will create more rational medical doctors.
