ABSTRACT

Objectives: This in-vitro study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial effects of four zinc salts namely zinc chloride, zinc sulfate, zinc citrate and zinc acetate against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Streptococcus sobrinus (S. sobrinus). Methods: Antibacterial susceptibility assay, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were undertaken to evaluate the inhibitory activities of different zinc salts against the tested bacteria. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to evaluate the morphological changes of bacterial cells following exposure to zinc salts. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used to compare the inhibitory effect of the different zinc salts. Results: All zinc salts tested against S. mutans and S. sobrinus had a statistically and significantly smaller inhibition zone when compared to chlorhexidine, (P < 0.001). However, zinc chloride had the largest inhibition zone (20 mm ± 5.5) against S. sobrinus, which was comparable to chlorhexidine (22 mm ± 4) (P > 0.05). Zinc chloride, zinc sulfate and zinc acetate demonstrated higher MIC and MBC values against S. mutans compared to S. sobrinus. However, zinc citrate revealed the highest MIC and MBC values of 1 mg/mL and > 8 mg/mL for S. sobrinus and > 8 mg/mL for S. mutans, respectively. Conclusion: Different zinc salts have displayed inhibitory growth effects against the common oral bacteria at very low concentrations except for zinc citrate which showed no inhibitory effect against these bacteria in vitro.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: The inhibitory effect of asparagine (Asn) and its derivatives on iron (Fe) corrosion was studied by performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In this paper, the global and local reactivity descriptors of Asn in the protonated and neutral forms were evaluated. Also, the changes in reactivity were investigated when dipeptides were combined with Asn. Due to the increase in the reaction centers within their molecular structure, there was an enhancement in the inhibitory effect of these dipeptides. Moreover, the adsorption energies (Eads) and the adsorption configurations of Asn and small peptides (SPs) with most stability were determined on the surface of Fe(111). It was found that dipeptides had a chemical adsorption on these substrates. In the protonated forms, there was an enhancement in the absolute values of Eads between the inhibitors and the Fe(111) surfaces. Peptides were more likely to be adsorbed on the Fe surfaces, showing the great inhibitory effect of these moieties. The results of the current research demonstrate the possibility of utilizing SPs as efficient "green" corrosion inhibitors. METHODS: DFT computations were undertaken by employing the BIOVIA Material Studio with B3LYP-D3 functional and 6-31 + G* basis set. The theoretical evaluation of the inhibitory effect of asparagine (Asn) dipeptides, and the potential analysis of small peptides to protect against the corrosion of Fe, was done.

ABSTRACT

Rare Earth elements in the lanthanide series are regarded as one of the finest options for the cationic substitution of calcium ions in hydroxyapatite (HA) because of their favorable impact on the biological characteristics of substituted HA. Neodymium and cerium were used to substitute 5% of calcium ions in HA, prepared via the wet precipitation method. Characterization tests for pure and substituted HA were conducted using XRD, FTIR, EDS, and FESEM. The results showed that changing part from calcium ions in hydroxyapatite to Nd and Ce ions altered its structure, composition, and morphology. Regarding the biological tests, the cytotoxicity test revealed a change in IC50 for both normal and cancer cell lines, where substitution part of the Ca ions with rare Earth elements led to increasing antitumor activity in comparison with HA without substitution; in addition, antibacterial and fungicide activity was evident for both HA and Nd-Ce/HA, with a modest increase in antibacterial activity of Nd-Ce/HA against S. epidermidis and E. coli in comparison with HA. These findings may shed light on the process by which Nd and Ce ions improve the biological characteristics of pure HA and the increased potential of these bioceramics.

ABSTRACT

NeuroAid II, a folk Chinese Medicine, is currently used in Asia for the treatment of stroke. An experimental study demonstrated that NeuroAid enables neuronal cells to be more resistant to glutamate toxicity. This research was constructed to evaluate the efficacy of NeuroAid in the prevention of epilepsy (EP). Forty healthy adult male mice were used and divided into four groups (10 mice/group): normal control group; positive control group; NeuroAid-treated group (10 mg/kg); topiramate-treated group (10 mg/kg). The treatment continued for 7 days, and on the last day, EP was induced using strychnine at a dose of 2 mg/kg via intraperitoneal (ip) administration. Seizure severity, latency to the seizure onset, the number of seizures, and the duration of each seizure episode were observed for one hour. The death and protection rates over the next twenty-four hours were recorded. Brain specimens from surviving animals were extracted and examined pathologically for quantification of glutamate receptor (GluR) gene expression in the isolated hippocampus employing real-time PCR analysis. Treatment with NeuroAid resulted in a significant reduction in seizure severity, prolonged the onset of seizures, decreased the number and duration of episodes, reduced brain insult, and decreased mortality rate. Reductions in the gene expression of GluRs in the hippocampus with minor histopathological changes were observed in the NeruoAid- and topiramate-treated groups. It is concluded that NeuroAid has a potential antiepileptic effect (EP) with the ability to prevent convulsion through its effect on the glutamate receptor.

ABSTRACT

The rapid spread of the SARS-Cov-2 virus, the increase in the number of patients with severe COVID-19, and the high mortality rate created the basis for the production of safe and effective vaccines. Studies have confirmed the increased risk of severe Covid-19 disease and mortality in cancer patients. It is logical that cancer patients should be the first to receive the primary vaccination and the booster vaccine for Covid-19. Since studies related to cancer patients and the effectiveness of existing Covid-19 vaccines have not been widely conducted, there are significant uncertainties about the effectiveness of the vaccine and the level of humoral and cellular immune responses in these patients. As a result, the possible risks and side effects of existing vaccines are not clear for patients with different cancers who are undergoing special treatments. In this study, we will discuss the effectiveness and safety of existing vaccines on cancer patients. In addition, we highlight factors that could affect the effectiveness of vaccines in these patients and finally discuss opportunities and challenges related to vaccination in cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: YouTube™ is considered a convenient and popular platform to seek healthcare information, which is uploaded by people of various professions. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the content and quality of the YouTube videos containing information about vitamin D for children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A YouTube search was performed using the terms 'vitamin D for children' and 'vitamin D deficiency in children'. Two independent reviewers scored the videos with the use of a customized 11-point scoring scheme and the 5-point Global Quality Scale (GQS) to assess the content and quality of each video. The videos were further classified into poor, moderate and good videos. The Kruskal­Wallis and χ2 tests as well as Spearman's correlation coefficient were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: In a total of 120 videos screened, 70 videos were included. They had a median content score of 4 and a median GQS score of 3. According to the information included in the videos and their overall quality, most of the videos were categorized as moderate (n = 33; 47.14% and n = 32; 45.71%, respectively). Good-quality videos had statistically significantly higher content scores as compared to the other groups (p = 0.001). A positive correlation was found between the total content score and the GQS score (ρ = 0.434; p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Most of the videos on YouTube about vitamin D were rated as moderate according to the sufficiency of information, and also their overall quality. This suggests that health organizations need to make further efforts to create good-quality medical content on popular social media platforms, such as YouTube.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of mechanical traction from different knee angles on pain, physical function, and range of motion in patients with knee osteoarthritis. DESIGN: A single-blinded, randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Outpatient public and governmental Hospital clinics. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred and twenty patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomly assigned into 4 equal groups with 30 patients in each group. INTERVENTIONS: Group (A) received conventional physiotherapy(CPT) treatment; group (B) received CPT with knee traction from full extension, group (C) received CPT with knee traction from 90° flexion, while group (D) received CPT with knee traction from 20° flexion. Interventions were applied 3 sessions a week for 4 weeks. OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: Visual analog scale (VAS), knee passive range of motion and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) were measured at baseline, immediately after 4 weeks of intervention, and after 4 weeks of no intervention as a follow-up. RESULTS: After eight weeks, the mean (SD) for VAS scores were 30.97 ± 8.68, 24.0 ± 8.8, 15.43 ± 6.31, and 16.17 ± 6.11 mm; for total WOMAC scores were 26.77 ± 9.19, 20.3 ± 8.52, 13.27 ± 6.25, and 13.43 ± 7.14 for groups A, B, C and D, respectively. The three traction groups showed statistically significant changes in pain scores, physical function, and total WOMAC, but not for knee passive range of motion, in favor of traction groups C and D than the conventional group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Traction from 90°and 20° of knee flexion was found superior to full extension knee in improving pain and physical function, but not for knee passive range of motion, in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

ABSTRACT

Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine is currently used to prevent tuberculosis infection. The vaccine was found to enhance resistance to certain types of infection including positive sense RNA viruses. The current COVID-19 pandemic is caused by positive sense RNA, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). A higher mortality rate of COVID-19 patients was reported in countries where BCG vaccination is not routinely administered, when compared to the vaccinated ones. We hypothesized that BCG vaccine may control SARS-CoV2 infection via modulating the monocyte immune response. We analyzed GSE104149 dataset to investigate whether human monocytes of BCG-vaccinated individuals acquire resistance to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Differentially expressed genes obtained from the dataset were used to determine enriched pathways, biological processes, and molecular functions for monocytes post BCG vaccination. Our data show that BCG vaccine promotes a more effective immune response of monocytes against SARS-CoV2, but probably not sufficient to prevent the infection.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The establishment of empirical evidence in the Eastern Mediterranean Region necessitates the implementation of wide-scale studies to describe the demographic, clinical features, and severity profile of patients with COVID-19. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the patterns of COVID-19 severity and mortality in seven countries, and to determine the risk factors of COVID-19 severity and mortality. METHODS: This multicountry study was based on a retrospective review of medical records of hospitalized patients confirmed to have COVID-19. This study includes data from Iraq, Pakistan, Sudan, Somalia, Morocco, Egypt, and Yemen. All demographic and clinical data were extracted from hospital records (paper files) by trained data collectors. RESULTS: A total of 4141 patients were included in this study from seven countries. Comorbidities were reported by nearly half of the patients, with hypertension (n=1021, 24.7%) and diabetes (n=939, 22.7%) being the most common. Older age, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and heart diseases were significantly associated with COVID-19 severity and mortality. Ever smoking and renal diseases were significantly associated with severity but not mortality, while male gender, respiratory diseases, and malignancy were significantly associated with mortality but not severity. CONCLUSIONS: The study confirms the role of comorbidities and demographic features on the severity and mortality of COVID-19. Understanding the contributing factors ensures attentive care and informs clinical management of patients with poorer prognoses in the early stages of diseases.

BACKGROUND: Splenic autotransplantation is a promising method to recover splenic functions after traumatic splenectomy. However, it is associated with several postoperative complications, such as subphrenic abscess, intestinal obstruction and torsion of the omentum with necrosis of the implanted splenic tissues. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate a new splenic autotransplantation technique that could overcome those complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single segment of the spleen was implanted inside a pedunculated omental pouch and fixed in the native site of the spleen in 15 patients who underwent splenectomy for abdominal trauma. This group of patients was compared with the next 17 patients who underwent splenectomy alone. Additionally, splenic functions of the patient and control groups were evaluated 3 months using peripheral blood smear [the presence of Howell-Jolly (HJ) bodies] and abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT). RESULTS: All patients who underwent splenic autotransplantation showed evidence of a well-vascularised splenic tissue on CECT and normal peripheral blood smear without HJ bodies 3 months postoperatively. No postoperative complications related to splenic autotransplantation were observed, and platelet count after 3 months was significantly higher in patients who underwent splenectomy only (p = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: Splenic autotransplantation using the aforementioned technique could restore splenic functions with minimum postoperative complications related to the procedure.

PURPOSE: This study aims to determine the relation of salivary LL37 level and mutans streptococci levels in early childhood caries (ECC). STUDY DESIGN: A case-control study was performed in children ≤71 months old. Unstimulated whole saliva was collected and the level of salivary LL37 was measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. The mutans streptococci oral bacteria were isolated from saliva and identified using a modified SB-20 culture medium (SB-20M). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, bivariate, and Spearman's rank correlation analysis. RESULTS: The was a variability of salivary LL37 level among the children and the level was significantly associated with age and races. The median (IQR) value of salivary LL37 in caries-free (CF) children was significantly higher 393.50 (580.55) ng/mL compared to 172.50 (234.65) ng/mL in the ECC group. The ECC children exhibited a significantly higher count of S. mutans and S. sobrinus compared to the CF children. An inverse weak correlation between salivary LL37 and dmft was also observed. CONCLUSIONS: The low salivary LL37 level and higher S. mutans and S. sobrinus count in ECC supported the protective role of salivary LL37 against dental caries. Further studies are required to explore the definite relation between salivary LL37 levels and dental caries.

PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the antimicrobial effects of the cholecalciferol vitamin D3 against Streptococcus sobrinus (Strep. sobrinus) and Streptococcus mutans (Strep. mutans) bacteria in vitro that is considered the main causative bacteria in dental caries development. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The antimicrobial effects of vitamin D3 were evaluated against Strep. sobrinus and Strep mutans using the agar disc diffusion method. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of vitamin D3 were determined using a microdilution method following the guidelines by the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to evaluate the morphological changes of bacterial cells following exposure to vitamin D3. RESULTS: Strep. sobrinus was more sensitive to vitamin D3 compared to Strep. mutans bacteria. The MIC values of vitamin D3 against Strep. sobrinus and Strep. mutans were 60 µg/ mL and 250 µg/mL respectively whereas the MBC values were 120 µg/mL and 500 µg/mL, respectively. Moreover, significant changes in the bacterial morphology were observed in treated bacterial cells with vitamin D3 as compared to the untreated control bacteria using SEM. CONCLUSION: These findings suggested that vitamin D3 has excellent antimicrobial effects against Strep. sobrinus and Strep. mutans and may be considered as a promising compound in the prevention of dental caries in the future. Further research is recommended to elucidate the mechanism of vitamin D3 on these bacteria.

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have reported that low levels of vitamin D (25(OH)D) are associated with an increased risk of dental caries and that optimal levels may offer protection This study aimed to assess the relationship between serum and saliva 25(OH)D levels and caries among young children. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 120 healthy children were recruited; 93 with caries and 27 caries-free. Dental caries status was evaluated using decayed, missing and filled in primary teeth (dmft) index. Blood and unstimulated whole saliva samples were collected. Laboratory analysis was performed using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay Kit. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, bivariate and Spearman's rank correlation analysis. RESULTS: There were no significant associations between serum and saliva 25(OH)D levels and caries status (P > 0.05). Levels of 25(OH)D in serum were significantly higher than levels found in saliva (P < 0.05), and a correlation between serum and saliva 25(OH)D levels was observed (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The association between serum and saliva 25(OH)D and dental caries in young children was inconclusive. However, a positive and significant correlation was observed between serum and saliva 25(OH)D levels. Further studies are warranted to investigate the definite relation between 25(OH)D levels and dental caries and using saliva 25(OH)D as a non-invasive alternative method over blood samples.

ABSTRACT

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a rare bone disorder. The main dental features are the presence of multiple retained deciduous teeth and supernumerary teeth, as well as unerupted permanent teeth. To date, CCD is managed by a combination approach, which consists of the extraction of deciduous and supernumerary teeth, followed by orthodontic traction of unerupted permanent teeth. This case highlights the management of a girl with CCD, who refused the recommended protocol. A 15-year-old Malay female presented with a complaint of retained deciduous teeth. Intraoral examination revealed multiple retained deciduous teeth. Radiographs showed numerous impacted supernumerary and unerupted permanent teeth. The patient opted to improve her facial appearance with a less aggressive treatment option. A composite build-up on all anterior maxillary deciduous teeth was carried out until the patient was ready to undergo surgical intervention.

ABSTRACT

We report on a temperature sensor based on an optical fiber with nanostructured cladding fabricated by graphene nanoparticles (G-NPs) deposited onto a chemically etched no-core fiber (NCF). The basic structure of this sensor comprises a single-mode-no-core-single-mode (SNCS) fiber section concatenation. The sensing head is the NCF segment where the modal interference is highly sensitive to temperature variations. The influence of the NCF diameter on the sensitivity of the sensor has been investigated. The obtained results revealed that the sensor with an etched NCF diameter of 60 µm coated with G-NPs embedded in polyvinyl alcohol exhibits a maximum sensitivity of -0.104nm/∘C in the temperature range of 25-235°C, which is approximately six times higher than that of the basic structure without coating. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a temperature sensor based on an etched NCF coated with graphene-polyvinyl alcohol thin film.

ABSTRACT

Precision temperature measurement of a nano system with high sensitivity and fast response is still a challenge. The marvelous thermal and mechanical properties of graphite will allow the creation of superior nanoscale temperature sensors. In-situ x-ray diffraction was employed to determine the graphite hexagonal crystal lattice dimensions and the coefficient of thermal expansion based on the calculation of its interatomic distance. The energy of graphite was mapped over the first Brillouin zone in the temperature range of 50 °C-1200 °C at intervals of 50 °C. Energy-based comparative studies between the quantum free electron approach obtained by an inelastic scattering and an harmonic oscillator are introduced by the principal quantum number associated with the excitation level. The hexagonal lattice constants, interlayer distance and interatomic distance of graphite crystals are investigated analytically with consideration given to their temperature dependence and the carbon peak (002), where the 2θ value decreases slightly with increasing temperature. The coefficient of thermal expansion of graphite-based interatomic distance is negative and tends toward zero with increasing temperature, which is in very good agreement with experiments. Moreover, the energy probability distributions enclosed by reciprocal lattice vectors of the hexagonal lattice are defined and interpreted based on lattice dimensions with varying temperature. Linear changes of the temperature-driven unit cell lattice dimensions and analysis of the kinetic energy of the electron in graphite may both be utilised for the advanced temperature interpretation model and preliminary design of a precise nanothermometer.

ABSTRACT

Dental caries and vitamin D inadequacy are known to affect children worldwide. Vitamin D has a vital role in tooth formation. There is growing evidence linking suboptimal serum vitamin D level with dental caries in children. This paper reviews the literature on both the prevalence of dental caries and of vitamin D deficiency in children in four Asian regions, discusses their associated risk factors, and reviews the global evidence on the association between dental caries and vitamin D in children. Caries prevalence in children ranged from 40% to 97% in Eastern Asia, 38-73.7% in Southern Asia, and 26.5-74.7% in Western Asian countries. Moreover, a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in Asian children was identified, even in countries in equatorial regions, ranging from 2.8% to 65.3% in Eastern Asia, 5-66.7% in Southern Asia, 4-45.5% in Western Asia and 38.1-78.7% in Central Asian countries. Obesity, age, female gender, higher latitude, season, darker skin pigmentation, sunlight protection behaviors, less sunlight exposure and low intake of food containing vitamin D were important factors associated with lower serum vitamin D in Asia. Suboptimal vitamin D level in children may be a significant risk factor for dental caries, and requires further research to ascertain such an association in children in Asia, as well as to understand its exact influence on caries risk and development.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to systematically review the growth inhibition effectiveness of zinc against Streptococcus mutans. The main question was, "Does the zinc inhibit the growth of oral Streptococcus mutans in vitro? METHODS: Literature search on PubMed, Medline, and science direct databases was carried out for in vitro studies published in English from 1990 to 2016, and the reported outcomes of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC), zone of inhibition (ZOI) and bacterial count method using colony forming unit (CFU) were used to assess the antibacterial effectiveness of zinc. RESULTS: Seventeen studies were included in this review. Seven studies reported MIC and MBC. Four studies reported ZOI, and eight studies reported CFU. MIC values using zinc chloride and zinc oxide nanoparticles were ranged from 0.025 to 0.2 mM and 0.390 to 500 ±â€¯306.18 µg/ml respectively. MBC values using zinc oxide nanoparticles have ranged from 3.125 to 500 µg/ml. ZOI ranged from no inhibition zone to 21 ±â€¯1.4 mm using 23.1% zinc oxide. A considerable reduction in the bacterial count was reported after adding zinc. However, only two studies have reported no inhibitory effect of zinc. CONCLUSION: This review indicated a significant growth inhibition effectiveness of zinc even at lower concentrations which indicate it's safely to be used in oral health products.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This research was accomplished to evaluate the IHC expression of p16 (ink4a) and CK17 in low grade cervical intraepithelial lesions (LSIL), high grade cervical intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) and invasive cervical carcinomas and to assess their correlation to HPV (16E6+18E6). METHODS: The study included (127) formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded cervical biopsies; of which 22 cases were chronic cervicitis, 24 cases were LSIL, 28 cases were HSIL and 53 cases were invasive cervical carcinomas. Sections were immunohistochemically stained for p16 (ink4a), CK17 and HPV (16E6+18E6). RESULTS: The study established a highly significant increase in IHC of expression of p16 (ink4a), CK17 and HPV (16E6+18E6) from LSIL through HSIL to invasive carcinomas (P-value˂0.001). There was non-significant association between IHC expression of all makers with age of patients; types, grade and stage of cervical carcinomas (P-value˃0.05). HPV (16E6+18E6) revealed a significantly positive correlation with p16 (ink4a) (P-value˂0.05) and a non- significant correlation with CK17 (P-value˃0.05); in LSIL, HSIL and invasive carcinoma cases. CONCLUSION: p16 (ink4a) expression directly reflects infection with high risk HPV in cervical lesions and can add a significant diagnostic accuracy in the evaluation of CIN. CK 17 is a good marker of malignant transformation, with increasing in its expression according to the severity of cervical lesions; however, it is not related to HPV infection. Both markers are not related to prognostic variables of patients with cervical carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

This survey evaluated the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of general dental practitioners (GDPs) in Selangor regarding early childhood caries (ECC) prevention and the recommended timing of a child's first dental visit. A questionnaire was mailed to 521 licensed GDPs. Descriptive statistics were used, and bivariate and logistic regression analyses were performed. The response rate was 52.6%. Although 89.8% mentioned counseling parents and caregivers, only 44.2% were familiar with anticipatory guidance. Whereas 98.2% agreed that early examinations are important to prevent ECC, only 51.8% were aware of the recommendation for a first visit by 12 months of age. GDPs who recommended early dental visits were significantly more likely to be recent graduates, more familiar with professional guidelines, and less likely to be deterred by a child's crying or behavior. In conclusion, GDPs in Selangor are aware about the importance of early dental visits in ECC prevention. However, a considerable number of them are still not aware of the recommendation that children must first visit the dentist by 12 months of age. Furthermore, some of their current practices in ECC management and prevention do not match professional recommendations.
