ABSTRACT

After an absence of 35 years, swine fever occurred in the island of Barbados in 1973. It is thought that the infection was introduced through the unauthorised importation of fresh pork and spread through the feeding of uncooked infected garbage. The history and nature of the outbreak are outlined, as well as the control measures adopted to meet local conditions. The overall effect on the economy of the industry is discussed.(AU)
