ABSTRACT

This study assessed impacts of cross-flow velocity (CFV) and air scouring on the performance and membrane fouling mitigation of a side-stream module containing outer-selective hollow fiber thin film composite forward osmosis membrane in osmosis membrane bioreactor (OMBR) system for urban wastewater treatment. CFV of draw solution was optimized, followed by the impact assessment of three CFVs on feed solution (FS) stream and periodic injection of air scouring into the side-stream module. Overall, the OMBR system exhibited high and stable performance with initial water flux of approximately 15 LMH, high removal efficiencies of bulk organic matter and nutrients. While FS's CFVs insignificantly affected the performance and membrane fouling, regular air scouring showed substantial impact with better performance and high efficiency in mitigating membrane fouling. These results indicated that periodic air scouring can be applied into the side-stream membrane module for efficient fouling mitigation without interruption the operation of the OMBR system.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Stroke incidence data with methodologically acceptable design in Southeast Asia countries is limited. This study aimed to determine incidence of age-, sex- and subtype-specific first-ever stroke (FES) in Vietnam. METHODS: We conducted a hospital-based retrospective study, targeting all stroke cases hospitalized at a solo-provider hospital in our study site of Nha Trang from January 2009 to December 2011 with International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10) codes I60-69. We calculated positive predictive values (PPVs) of each ICD-10-coded stroke by conducting a detailed case review of 190 randomly selected admissions with ICD-10 codes of I60-I69. These PPVs were then used to estimate annual incident stroke cases from the computerized database. National census data in 2009 was used as a denominator. RESULTS: 2,693 eligible admissions were recorded during the study period. The crude annual incidence rate of total FES was 90.2 per 100,000 population (95% CI 81.1-100.2). The age-adjusted incidence of FES was 115.7 (95% CI 95.9-139.1) when adjusted to the WHO world populations. Importantly, age-adjusted intracerebral hemorrhage was as much as one third of total FES: 36.9 (95% CI 26.1-51.0). CONCLUSIONS: We found a considerable proportion of FES in Vietnam to be attributable to intracerebral hemorrhage, which is as high or exceeding levels seen in high-income countries. A high prevalence of improperly treated hypertension in Vietnam may underlie the high prevalence of intracerebral hemorrhagic stroke in this population.

ABSTRACT

A novel methane-oxidizing bacterium, strain Fw12E-Y(T), was isolated from floodwater of a rice paddy field in Japan. Cells of strain Fw12E-Y(T) were Gram-negative, motile rods with a single polar flagellum and type I intracytoplasmic membrane arrangement. The strain grew only on methane or methanol as sole carbon and energy source. It was able to grow at 10-40 °C (optimum 30 °C), at pH 5.5-7.0 (optimum 6.5) and with 0-0.1% (w/w) NaCl (no growth above 0.5% NaCl). 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain Fw12E-Y(T) is related most closely to members of the genus Methylomonas, but at low levels of similarity (95.0-95.4%). Phylogenetic analysis of pmoA and mxaF genes indicated that the strain belongs to the genus Methylomonas (97 and 92 % deduced amino acid sequence identities to Methylomonas methanica S1(T), respectively). The DNA G+C content of strain Fw12E-Y(T) was 57.1 mol%. Chemotaxonomic data regarding the major quinone (MQ-8) and major fatty acids (C(16:1) and C(14:0)) also supported its affiliation to the genus Methylomonas. Based on phenotypic, genomic and phylogenetic data, strain Fw12E-Y(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Methylomonas, for which the name Methylomonas koyamae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Fw12E-Y(T) ( = JCM 16701(T) = NBRC 105905(T) = NCIMB 14606(T)).

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been classified into 8 genotypes that have different geographic distributions. The clinical outcomes of acute hepatitis are dependent on genotype. The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of HBV subgenotypes and basal core promoter (BCP)/precore (PC) regions in acute hepatitis patients in Central Vietnam to clarify the distributions and the clinical and virological differences. METHODS: 27 patients with acute hepatitis B were studied. HBV subgenotypes and BCP/PC variants were determined by direct sequencing of the preS, BCP/PC regions, respectively. RESULTS: HBV subgenotypes B4/Ba (n = 22) and C1/Cs (n = 5) were detected. Of the 27 patients, 3 developed fulminant hepatic failure, and all were infected with B4/Ba. Three patients had a BCP mutation, and 10 patients had a PC mutation in subgenotype B4/Ba. Three patients with C1/Cs had a BCP mutation. Two of 3 patients who progressed to fulminant hepatic failure had T1762, A1764, and A1896 simultaneously. None of the patients with acute, self-limited hepatitis carried these triple mutations. CONCLUSION: The prevalent HBV subgenotypes in patients with acute hepatitis B in Central Vietnam were B4/Ba and C1/Cs. BCP/PC variants have an association with the development of fulminant hepatic failure in subgenotype B4/Ba.
