ABSTRACT

We are reporting a short and convenient pathway for the synthesis of novel ß-carboline-bisindole hybrid compounds from relatively cheap and commercially available chemicals such as tryptamine, dialdehydes and indoles. These newly designed compounds can also be prepared in high yields with the tolerance of many functional groups under mild conditions. Notably, these ß-carboline-bisindole hybrid compounds exhibited some promising applications as anticancer agents against the three common cancer cell lines MCF-7 (breast cancer), SK-LU-1 (lung cancer), and HepG2 (liver cancer). The two best compounds 5b and 5g inhibited the aforementioned cell lines with the same range of the reference Ellipticine at less than 2 µM. A molecular docking study to gain more information about the interactions between the synthesized molecules and the kinase domain of the EGFR was performed. Therefore, this finding can have significant impacts on the development of future research in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery.

ABSTRACT

Molecular and dissociative hydrogen adsorption of transition metal (TM)-doped [Mo3S13]2- atomic clusters were investigated using density functional theory calculations. The introduced TM dopants form stable bonds with S atoms, preserving the geometric structure. The S-TM-S bridging bond emerges as the most stable configuration. The preferred adsorption sites were found to be influenced by various factors, such as the relative electronegativity, coordination number, and charge of the TM atom. Notably, the presence of these TM atoms remarkably improved the hydrogen adsorption activity. The dissociation of a single hydrogen molecule on TM[Mo3S13]2- clusters (TM = Sc, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) is thermodynamically and kinetically favorable compared to their bare counterparts. The extent of favorability monotonically depends on the TM impurity, with a maximum activation barrier energy ranging from 0.62 to 1.58 eV, lower than that of the bare cluster (1.69 eV). Findings provide insights for experimental research on hydrogen adsorption using TM-doped molybdenum sulfide nanoclusters, with potential applications in the field of hydrogen energy.

ABSTRACT

Basal ganglia germinomas (BGGs) are rare lesions. Because of the atypical features of early-stage clinical symptoms and imaging characteristics, BGGs are easily misdiagnosed with non-tumorous conditions. This article presented cases of 2 young male patients who came to the hospital due to right arm weakness. Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images in the first case revealed a lobulated mixed component mass on the left basal ganglia. The solid part showed restricted diffusion on diffusion-weighted imaging, heterogeneous strong enhancement, and no signal of calcification or bleeding. The second case in the left putamen showed hypointensity on T2*, mild enhancement, and atrophy of the ipsilateral cerebral peduncle, increased choline, and decreased n-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) on spectroscopy. Follow-up MRI after 6 months showed a mass increase in size and hypointensity part on T2*. BGGs have been confirmed on biopsy in both cases. With isolated chemotherapy application, there is no sign of remission in the first patient. The second patient was treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and MRI images after treatment showed a complete response.

ABSTRACT

Osteoarticular tuberculosis is less common than pulmonary tuberculosis and is often overlooked in the differential diagnosis of people with joint disease. In this article, we present a case of a 71-year-old female patient admitted to the hospital because of pain and limited movement of her right shoulder for a year. The patient had diabetes for 10 years, and no history of tuberculosis or previous history of tuberculosis exposure. Blood test results showed inflammatory condition and positive IGRA test. X-ray, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging images revealed osteolytic and sclerotic lesions of the humeral head, diffuse thickening of the synovial membrane, and loose bodies in the joint and bursa. The clinical diagnosis was tuberculous inflammatory osteoarthritis of the right shoulder. The patient underwent arthroscopy surgery to remove loose bodies and the inflamed portion of the synovium and send them to the pathology department. Histopathological examination of the loose bodies and synovial membrane revealed features suggestive of tuberculosis of the shoulder joint. Afterward, the patient was treated with antituberculosis drugs according to the guideline and rehabilitation exercises. After 3 months of treatment, the clinical symptoms were reduced, the pain rating was decreased and the range of motion was increased.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Rapid internet penetration and technological advancements have facilitated accessibility to internet-enabled devices globally. Since Asia lacks comprehensive data on internet addiction among college students, this review aims to estimate its pooled prevalence. STUDY DESIGN: This was a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and MEDLINE from their inception through August 2022 using terms appropriate to internet addiction and Asian countries/territorial for publications in English peer-reviewed journals. The studies included those done on current college students and provided unambiguous indicators of the threshold of internet addiction. The pooled prevalence was calculated through a random-effects meta-analysis by RStudio software, and I2 statistic was used to assess heterogeneity. The Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal checklist was used for quality assessment. RESULTS: Overall, between 2007 and 2021, 39 papers comprising 45 effect sizes and totaling 58,058 participants met the inclusion criteria. The pooled prevalence of internet addiction among Asian college students was 24.3% (95% confidence interval: 19.8%-29.5%, Q = 6234, df = 44, τ2 = 0.79, I2 = 99.29%), and strikingly, this percentage increased over time. A high degree of heterogeneity was seen, and no publication bias was found. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive review report on Asian college students, which found that one-fifth suffer from internet addiction. The findings emphasize the significance of multidisciplinary prevention and management strategies to mitigate the harmful effects of internet addiction. Further research is warranted to develop a standardized diagnostic tool for a more precise estimation of internet addiction among this population.

ABSTRACT

In Vietnam, each primary care community health center (CHC) consists of a multi-professional team with six disciplines, including a physician, assistant physician, nurse, pharmacist, midwife, and Vietnamese traditional physician, who are able to meet the majority of patient's needs at the primary care level. How they collaborate, especially in chronic disease management (CDM), is still limited described in the literature. This study aims to gain insight into the perceptions and the experiences of primary health care providers (PHCPs) toward interprofessional collaboration (IPC) in CDM in CHCs in (Hue) Vietnam. A qualitative study of descriptive phenomenology was performed using two focus groups and 15 semi-structured interviews with PHCPs from six professions relevant to CDM in CHCs. The data were analyzed using NVivo 12.0 with a thematic analysis method by a multiprofessional research team. From the analysis, the data were classified into three main themes: "lack of collaborative practice," "knowledge," and "facilitators and barriers to IPC." This study provided evidence of the awareness that actual collaboration in daily care is fragmentarily organized and that PHCPs try to finish their tasks within their profession. PHCPs work multiprofessionally and lack shared decision-making in patient-centered care. There is a need to develop an interprofessional education program and training to address these deficiencies in the Vietnamese context to improve interprofessional collaboration in health care.

BACKGROUND: Interprofessional education (IPE) is expected to help prepare undergraduate health profession students to collaborate with other healthcare professionals in realising quality of care. Studies stress the necessity of students' readiness for interprofessional learning (IPL) in view of designing IPE programs. The present study aims to determine students' IPL-readiness and looks at related differences in students enrolled in different programs and at different phases in their educational program. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey study was set up among 1139 students from six health programs at HueUMP, using the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS). Statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis H and Mann-Whitney U tests. RESULTS: The overall mean RIPLS score was 68.89. RIPLS scores significantly differed between programs and between phases in the educational programs. Medical students presented a lower readiness level for IPL than students from other programs. In contrast to a significant increase in RIPLS scores of students in the clinical phase in Vietnamese traditional medicine, medicine, and pharmacy, a decrease in RIPLS scores was observed in students in the clinical phase in odonto-stomatology. CONCLUSIONS: The differences could be related to differences in educational programs and the study phases in a particular program. These results offer insights to direct the design and implementation of IPE in health education curricula and especially underscore the need to provide IPE throughout the curriculum.

ABSTRACT

Eu3+-doped phosphors have been much attractive owing to their narrow-band red emission peak at 610-630 nm with high color purity; however, the weak and narrow absorption band in the NUV region limits their applications. Doping a higher amount of Eu3+ ions into a non-concentration quenching host could be key to enhancing the efficiency of the absorption value and emission intensity. Hence, the design of Eu3+-heavily doped phosphors with a suitable host lattice is key for applications. In this study, red-emitting Eu3+-doped Gd(BO2)3-Y3BO6-GdBO3 (GdYGd:Eu3+) phosphor with a high quantum efficiency of 58.4% and excellent color purity of 99.5% is reported for the first time. The phosphor is efficiently excited by NUV light at 394 nm and emits a strong red emission band in the 590-710 nm range, peaking at 612 nm. The optimal annealing temperature and Eu3+ doping content to obtain the strongest PL intensity are 1100 °C and 20 mol%, respectively. The optimized GdYGd:Eu3+ phosphor possesses a high activation energy of 0.319 eV and a lifetime of 1.14 ms. An illustration of phosphor-coated NUV LED with chromaticity coordinates (x = 0.5636,y = 0.2961) was successfully synthesized, demonstrating the great potential of GdYGd:Eu3+ phosphor for NUV-pumped WLED applications.

ABSTRACT

The use of non-invasive approaches for monitoring therapy processes in cancer patients at late stages is truly needed. In this work, we aim to develop an electrochemical interface based on polydopamine combined with gold nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide for impedimetric detection of lung cancer cells. Gold nanoparticles (around 75 nm) were dispersed onto reduced graphene oxide material pre-electrodeposited onto disposable fluorine doped tin oxide electrodes. The coordination between gold and carbonaceous material has somehow improved the mechanical stability of this electrochemical interface. Polydopamine was later introduced onto modified electrodes via self-polymerization of dopamine in an alkaline solution. The result has demonstrated the good adhesion and biocompatibility of polydopamine towards A-549 lung cancer cells. The presence of the two conductive materials (gold nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide) has led to a six-times decrease in charge transfer resistance of polydopamine film. Finally, the as-prepared electrochemical interface was employed for impedimetric detection of A-549 cells. The detection limit was estimated to be only 2 cells per mL. These findings have proved the possibilities to use advanced electrochemical interfaces for point-of-care applications.

ABSTRACT

A gold nanoparticle-decorated graphene oxide (GO-AuNP) hybrid material was prepared by using the chemical reduction method. The obtained results showed that the AuNPs of about of 15 nm are well bound on the surface of GO. The GO-AuNP hybrid material was used for transparent conductive film (TCF) and organic/inorganic hybrid solar cells. The TCF based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) containing GO-AuNPs was fabricated at room temperature. The obtained results show that the TCF containing 0.5 wt% GO-AuNPs has a high transmittance of 69.7% at 550 nm, a low sheet resistance of 50.5 Ω â–¡-1 and a conductivity that increased to 3960 S cm-1, which is three times higher than those of the PEDOT:PSS and PEDOT:PSS/GO film. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the n-Si/PEDOT:PSS hybrid solar cell containing GO-AuNPs was 8.39% and is higher than pristine PEDOT:PSS (5.81%) and PEDOT:PSS/GO (7.58%). This is a result of the increased electrical conductivity and localized surface plasmon resonance of the PEDOT:PSS coating layer containing the GO-AuNP hybrid material.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to identify and characterize virus isolates (which are named for Bacgiang Agriculture and Forestry University [BAFU]) from diseased Cherry Valley duck and mule duck flocks and investigate the damage caused by a novel parvovirus-related virus (DuPV) to tissues and organs, including the brain, cerebellum, kidney, liver, lung, spleen, and spinal cord. The results of phylogenetic analysis show that DuPV-BAFU evolved from a goose lineage and duck parvoviruses rather than from Muscovy duck parvoviruses. In the genetic lineages, DuPVs were identified from the DuPV samples analyzed, and DuPV-BAFU was found to be closely clustered with two known goose origin parvoviruses (GPVa2006 and GPV1995) and a duck GPVs. Finally, structural modeling revealed that DuPV-BAFU and the closely related viruses GPVa2006 and GPV1995 possessed identical clusters of receptor-interacting amino acid residues in the VP3 protein, a major determinant of viral receptor binding and host specificity. Significantly, these three viruses differed from DuPVs, Muscovy duck parvoviruses, and other goose parvoviruses at these positions. These results also demonstrated that DuPV-BAFU represents a new variant of goose-origin parvovirus that currently circulates in ducklings and causes beak atrophy and dwarfism syndrome, as noted in the previous reports in Europe, Taiwan, and China. This new finding highlights the need for future surveillance of DuPV-BAFU in waterfowl in order to gain a better understanding of both the evolution and the biology of this emerging parvovirus in waterfowl.


Identificación molecular y patogenicidad de un nuevo parvovirus de ganso de origen en pato aislado del síndrome de atrofia del pico y enanismo de las aves acuáticas en el norte de Vietnam. El objetivo de este estudio es identificar y caracterizar aislados de virus detectados en la Universidad de Agricultura y Silvicultura de Bacgiang (BAFU) de parvadas de patos enfermos Cherry Valley e híbridos y también investigar el daño causado por un nuevo virus relacionado con parvovirus del pato (DuPV) en tejidos y órganos, incluidos el cerebro, el cerebelo, los riñones, el hígado, los pulmones, el bazo y la médula espinal. Los resultados del análisis filogenético mostraron que el virus DuPV-BAFU evolucionó a partir de un linaje de parvovirus de patos y gansos en lugar del parvovirus de patos reales. En los linajes genéticos, se identificaron virus DuPV a partir de las muestras de DuPV analizadas, y se encontró que el DuPV-BAFU estaba estrechamente agrupado con dos parvovirus conocidos de origen de ganso (GPVa2006 y GPV1995) y con parvovirus de pato. Finalmente, el modelado estructural reveló que el virus DuPV-BAFU y los virus estrechamente relacionados GPVa2006 y GPV1995 poseían grupos idénticos de residuos de aminoácidos que interactúan con el receptor en la proteína VP3, que es un determinante importante de la unión al receptor viral y la especificidad del huésped. Significativamente, estos tres virus diferían de los DuPV, los parvovirus del pato real y de otros parvovirus del ganso en estas posiciones. Estos resultados también demostraron que el virus DuPV-BAFU representa una nueva variante del parvovirus de origen ganso que actualmente circula en patitos y causa atrofia del pico y síndrome de enanismo, como se señaló en reportes anteriores en Europa, Taiwán y China. Este nuevo hallazgo destaca la necesidad de una vigilancia futura para el virus DuPV-BAFU en las aves acuáticas para comprender mejor tanto la evolución como la biología de este parvovirus emergente en las aves acuáticas.

ABSTRACT

Hemorrhagic stroke due to ruptured brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) is a common cause in young stroke patients. When the ruptured AVMs are in deep location, the choice of endovascular intervention with the arterial approach to AVM embolization is routine but in many cases, it is not feasible due to the inability to access because of the small and tortuous arterial branch, however, the intravenous approach also results in high complete obliteration rates but also carries a higher risk of stroke than the intra-arterial route. We describe a 36-year-old female patient diagnosed with intracranial and intraventricular hemorrhage who underwent complete transvenous embolization of the ruptured AVMs, and achieved near-complete clinical recovery after 1 month with the modified Rankin scale 1.

Astronauts are always faced with serious health problems during prolonged spaceflights. Previous studies have shown that weightlessness significantly affects the physiological function of female astronauts, including a change in reproductive hormones and ovarian cells, such as granulosa and theca cells. However, the effects of microgravity on these cells have not been well characterized, especially in granulosa cells. This study aimed to investigate the effects of simulated microgravity (SMG) on the proliferation and morphology of porcine granulosa cells (pGCs). pGC proliferation from the SMG group was inhibited, demonstrated by the reduced O.D. value and cell density in the WST-1 assay and cell number counting. SMG-induced pGCs exhibited an increased ratio of cells in the G0/G1 phase and a decreased ratio of cells in the S and G2/M phase. Western blot analysis indicated a down-regulation of cyclin D1, cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (cdk4), and cyclin-dependent kinase 6 (cdk6), leading to the prevention of the G1-S transition and inducing the arrest phase. pGCs under the SMG condition showed an increase in nuclear area. This caused a reduction in nuclear shape value in pGCs under the SMG condition. SMG-induced pGCs exhibited different morphologies, including fibroblast-like shape, rhomboid shape, and pebble-like shape. These results revealed that SMG inhibited proliferation and induced morphological changes in pGCs.

There have been few reports on the imaging characteristics of cryptococcus neoformans (C. neoformans) infection of the breast. Herein, we reported the imaging features of C. neoformans infection of the breast in a 41-year-old woman with immune thrombocytopenic purpura. Bilateral, diffuse, hyperechoic, and well-defined margin lesions were observed on breast ultrasounds. In addition, a global asymmetry in the left breast, and a focal asymmetry in the right breast were observed on mammograms. Breast fine needle aspiration and biopsy results revealed a C. neoformans infection. After 5 months of treatment with oral fluconazole and amphotericin B, the lesion on the right breast disappeared on repeated-breast ultrasounds.

ABSTRACT

Barriers preventing parents from accessing healthcare services affect the effectiveness of maternal care in mountainous areas of Vietnam. AIM: This study aimed to examine the current knowledge, attitudes, and practice of parents about maternal care in a mountainous region of Cao Bang province. METHOD: With the participation of 18 individuals (mothers, fathers, and pregnant women), six semi-structured interviews and three group discussions were conducted at different commune health centers. RESULT: This study emerged three themes, including knowledge, attitude, and practice of parents. Overall, parental knowledge about maternal care was at a basic level. While they showed positive attitudes towards the importance of maternal healthcare, unexpected behaviors such as homebirth or poor attendance at maternal health visits were still evident. These behavior patterns reflect incorrect cultural beliefs about health along with geographical and economic barriers.

Anionic Congo red dye (CR) is not effectively removed by conventional adsorbents. Three novel biochars derived from agro-waste (Acacia auriculiformis), modified with metal salts of FeCl3, AlCl3, and CaCl2 at 500 °C pyrolysis have been developed to enhance CR treatment. These biochars revealed significant differences in effluents compared to BC, which satisfied initial research expectations (P < 0.05). The salt concentration of 2 M realized optimal biochars with the highest CR removal of 96.8%, for AlCl3-biochar and FeCl3-biochar and 70.8% for CaCl2-biochar. The modified biochars were low in the specific surface area (137.25-380.78 m2 g-1) compared normal biochar (393.15 m2 g-1), had more heterogeneous particles and successfully integrated metal oxides on the surface. The CR removal increased with a decrease in pH and increase in biochar dosage, which established an optimal point at an initial loading of 25 mg g-1. Maximum adsorption capacity achieved 130.0, 44.86, and 30.80 mg g-1 for BFe, BCa, and BAl, respectively. As magnetic biochar, which is easily separated from the solution and achieves a high adsorption capacity, FeCl3-biochar is the preferred biochar for CR treatment application.

A cross-sectional study was used to identify and assess prevalence and phenotypic antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles of Escherichia coli and other enterobacteria isolated from healthy wildlife and livestock cohabiting at a 10,000 acres game ranch near Lusaka, Zambia. Purposive sampling was used to select wildlife and livestock based on similarities in behavior, grazing habits and close interactions with humans. Isolates (n = 66) from fecal samples collected between April and August 2018 (n = 84) were examined following modified protocols for bacteria isolation, biochemical identification, molecular detection, phylogenetic analysis, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing by disc diffusion method. Data were analyzed using R software, Genetyx ver.12 and Mega 6. Using Applied Profile Index 20E kit for biochemical identification, polymerase chain reaction assay and sequencing, sixty-six isolates were identified to species level, of which Escherichia coli (72.7%, 48/66), E. fergusonii (1.5%, 1/66), Shigella sonnei (22.7%, 14/66), Sh. flexinerri (1.5%, 1/66) and Enterobacteriaceae bacterium (1.5%, 1/66), and their relationships were illustrated in a phylogenetic tree. Phenotypic antimicrobial resistance or intermediate sensitivity expression to at least one antimicrobial agent was detected in 89.6% of the E. coli, and 73.3% of the Shigella isolates. The E. coli isolates exhibited the highest resistance rates to ampicillin (27%), ceftazidime (14.3%), cefotaxime (9.5%), and kanamycin (9.5%). Multidrug resistance (MDR) was detected in 18.8% of E. coli isolates while only 13.3% Shigella isolates showed MDR. The MDR was detected among isolates from impala and ostrich (wild animals in which no antimicrobial treatment was used), and in isolates from cattle, pigs, and goats (domesticated animals). This study indicates the possible transmission of drug-resistant microorganisms between animals cohabiting at the wildlife-livestock interface. ABSTRACT

This study evaluated and compared the performance of two vertical flow constructed wetlands (VF) using expanded clay (VF1) and biochar (VF2), of which both are low-cost, eco-friendly, and exhibit potentially high adsorption as compared to conventional filter layers. Both VFs achieved relatively high removal for organic matters (i.e. Biological oxygen demand during 5 days, BOD5) and nitrogen, accounting for 9.5 - 10.5 g.BOD5.m-2.d-1 and 3.5 - 3.6 g.NH4-N.m-2.d-1, respectively. The different filter materials did not exert any significant discrepancy to effluent quality in terms of suspended solids, organic matters and NO3-N (P > 0.05), but they did influence NH4-N effluent as evidenced by the removal rate of that by VF1 and VF2 being of 82.4 ± 5.7 and 84.6 ± 6.4%, respectively (P < 0.05). The results obtained from the designed systems were further subject to machine learning to clarify the effecting factors and predict the effluents. The optimal algorithms were random forest, generalized linear model, and support vector machine. The values of the coefficient of determination (R2) and the root mean square error (RMSE) of whole fitting data achieved 74.0% and 5.0 mg.L-1, 80.0% and 0.3 mg.L-1, 90.1% and 2.9 mg.L-1, and 48.5% and 0.5 mg.L-1 for BOD5_VF1, NH4-N_VF1, BOD5_VF2, and NH4-N_VF2, respectively.

ABSTRACT

The effects of replacing grass silage by sainfoin silage in a total mixed ration (TMR) based diet on fatty acid (FA) reticular inflow and milk FA profile of dairy cows was investigated. The experiment followed a crossover design with 2 dietary treatments. The control diet consisted of grass silage, corn silage, concentrate and linseed. In the sainfoin diet, half of the grass silage was replaced by a sainfoin silage. Six rumen cannulated lactating multiparous dairy cows with a metabolic body weight of 132.5 ± 3.6 kg BW0.75, 214 ± 72 d in milk and an average milk production of 23.1 ± 2.8 kg/d were used in the experiment. Cows were paired based on parity and milk production. Within pairs, cows were randomly assigned to either the control diet or the sainfoin diet for 2 experimental periods (29 d per period). In each period, the first 21 d, cows were housed individually in tie-stalls for adaptation, then next 4 d cows were housed individually in climate-controlled respiration chambers to measure CH4. During the last 4 d, cows were housed individually in tie stalls to measure milk FA profile and determine FA reticular inflow using the reticular sampling technique with Cr-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt dihydrate (EDTA) and Yb-acetate used as digesta flow markers. Although the dietary C18:3n-3 intake was lower (P = 0.025) in the sainfoin diet group, the mono-unsaturated FA reticular inflow was greater (P = 0.042) in cows fed the sainfoin diet. The reticular inflow of trans-9, trans-12-C18:2 and cis-12, trans-10 C18:2 was greater (P ≤ 0.024) in the sainfoin diet group. The cows fed sainfoin diet had a lower (P ≤ 0.038) apparent ruminal biohydrogenation of cis-9-C18:1 and C18:3n-3, compared to the cows fed the control diet. The sainfoin diet group had greater (P ≤ 0.018) C18:3n-3 and cis-9, cis-12-C18:2 proportions in the milk FA profile compared to the control diet group. Transfer efficiencies from feed to milk of C18:2, C18:3n-3 and unsaturated FA were greater (P ≤ 0.0179) for the sainfoin diet. Based on the results, it could be concluded that replacing grass silage by sainfoin silage in dairy cow rations reduces ruminal C18:3n-3 biohydrogenation and improves milk FA profile.
