ABSTRACT

Extracellular vesicles, particularly exosomes, have emerged as promising drug delivery systems owing to their unique advantages, such as biocompatibility, immune tolerability, and target specificity. Various engineering strategies have been implemented to harness these innate qualities, with a focus on enhancing the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of exosomes via payload loading and surface engineering for active targeting. This concise review outlines the challenges in the development of exosomes as drug carriers and offers insights into strategies for their effective clinical translation. We also highlight preclinical studies that have successfully employed anti-inflammatory exosomes and suggest future directions for exosome therapeutics. These advancements underscore the potential for integrating exosome-based therapies into clinical practice, heralding promise for future medical interventions.

ABSTRACT

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is a rare, asymptomatic, slow-growing benign tumor that can be divided into three variants: follicular, extrafollicular, and peripheral. By treating AOT using an enucleation and curettage approach, recurrence can be avoided. We report a case of a 24-year-old female who presented with a lump in the right mandibular premolar area along with diastema between displaced teeth #43 and #44 and was diagnosed with extrafollicular AOT. The patient was managed with enucleation-curettage surgery without additional bone graft procedure along with routine follow-up. A successful outcome without recurrence was achieved, and diastema closure with repositioning of the displaced teeth did not require orthodontic treatment. AOT should be managed via enucleation and curettage to obtain successful outcomes without recurrence. Spontaneous bone regeneration following enucleation can be achieved without guided bone regeneration. Also, diastema closure and repositioning of displaced teeth can occur without orthodontic interventions through physiologic drift.

OBJECTIVE: Downregulation of N-myc downstream-regulated gene 2 (NDRG2), a tumor suppressor gene, has been associated with poor clinical outcomes in various cancers. However, the prognostic significance of NDRG2 in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of NDRG2 downregulation in OSCC and to elucidate the mechanism by which NDRG2 is downregulated and the biological role of NDRG2 in tumor progression. METHODS: Immunohistochemical and in silico analyses of NDRG2 expression were performed, and the correlation between NDRG2 expression and clinicopathological data was analyzed. The effect of NDRG2 knockdown on the biological behavior of OSCC cells was investigated and the effect of 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine (5-aza-dC) on NDRG2 expression was determined. RESULTS: NDRG2 expression was significantly downregulated and DNA hypermethylation of NDRG2 was frequently found in head and neck SCC, including OSCC. Low NDRG2 expression was significantly correlated with adverse clinicopathological features and worse survival in OSCC. NDRG2 knockdown could enhance the oncogenic properties of OSCC cells. NDRG2 mRNA levels in OSCC cells could be restored by 5-aza-dC. CONCLUSION: Downregulation of NDRG2 promotes tumor progression and predicts poor prognosis in OSCC. Therefore, restoration of NDRG2 expression may be a potential therapeutic strategy in OSCC.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study investigates the role and effectiveness of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) in oral cancer, focusing on the clinical relevance of EGFR and myeloid cell leukemia-1 (Mcl-1) in head and neck cancers (HNCs). It aims to explore the molecular mechanism of afatinib, a TKI, in treating human oral cancer. METHODS: We conducted an in silico analysis using databases like The Cancer Genome Atlas, Gene Expression Omnibus, and Clinical Proteomic Tumor Analysis Consortium, along with immunohistochemistry staining, to study EGFR and Mcl-1 expression in HNCs. For investigating afatinib's anticancer properties, we performed various in vitro and in vivo analyses, including trypan blue exclusion assay, Western blotting, 4'-6-diamidino-2-phenylindole staining, flow cytometry, quantitative real-time PCR, Mitochondrial membrane potential assay, overexpression vector construction, transient transfection, and a tumor xenograft model. RESULTS: Higher expression levels of EGFR and Mcl-1 were observed in HNC patient tissues compared to normal tissues, with their co-expression significantly linked to poor prognosis. There was a strong correlation between EGFR and Mcl-1 expressions in oral cancer patients. Afatinib treatment induced apoptosis and suppressed Mcl-1 in oral cancer cell lines without the EGFR T790M mutation. The mechanism of afatinib-induced apoptosis involved the EGFR/mTOR/Mcl-1 axis, as shown by the effects of mTOR activator MHY1485 and inhibitor rapamycin. Afatinib also increased Bim expression, mitochondrial membrane permeabilization, and cytochrome c release. It significantly lowered tumor volume without affecting body, liver, and kidney weights. CONCLUSION: Afatinib, targeting the EGFR/mTOR/Mcl-1 axis, shows promise as a therapeutic strategy for oral cancer, especially in patients with high EGFR and Mcl-1 expressions.

ABSTRACT

Malignant melanoma of the parotid gland is an unusual tumor in the head and neck region, and most parotid melanoma is reported as a metastatic lesion of cutaneous malignant melanoma. We report a case of primary malignant melanoma arising in the parotid gland duct with diagnostic challenge. The patient was a 68-year-old man who complained of repeated right facial swelling that presented 3 months prior. Swelling was detected along the Stensen's duct of the cheek, and brown-colored saliva-like fluid was aspirated. On MR and CT images, a fluid-filled duct with small nodule and heterogeneously enhancing mass in the parotid parenchyma was detected. The nodular mass on the ductal wall grew rapidly, and the hyperintense T1 signal became significant on follow-up images. The final diagnosis via histopathologic examination using biopsy and parotidectomy specimen revealed the lesion as malignant melanoma of the duct and pleomorphic adenoma of the parenchyma. Even if the incidence of primary malignant melanoma is very low among tumors occurring in the parotid gland, efforts supporting an early diagnosis using imaging characteristics are important.

Background and Objectives: Tacrolimus is a macrolide lactone compound derived from the bacterium Streptomyces tsukubensis, widely known as an immunosuppressant. In basic research, the effects of tacrolimus on osteogenic differentiation have been tested using mesenchymal stem cells. In this study, tacrolimus's effects on the cellular survival and osteogenic differentiation of stem cell spheroids were investigated. Materials and Methods: Concave microwells were used to form stem cell spheroids in the presence of tacrolimus at final concentrations of 0 µg/mL, 0.1 µg/mL, 1 µg/mL, 10 µg/mL, and 100 µg/mL. A microscope was used to test cellular vitality qualitatively, and an assay kit based on water-soluble tetrazolium salt was used to measure cellular viability quantitatively. Alkaline phosphatase activity and an anthraquinone dye test for measuring calcium deposits were used to assess osteogenic differentiation. To assess the expression of osteogenic differentiation, a quantitative polymerase chain reaction, Western blot, and RNA sequencing were performed. Results: Spheroids across all concentrations maintained a relatively uniform and spherical shape. Cell viability assay indicated that tacrolimus, up to a concentration of 100 µg/mL, did not significantly impair cell viability within spheroids cultured in osteogenic media. The increase in calcium deposition, particularly at lower concentrations of tacrolimus, points toward an enhancement in osteogenic differentiation. There was an increase in COL1A1 expression across all tacrolimus concentrations, as evidenced by the elevated mean and median values, which may indicate enhanced osteogenic activity. Conclusions: This study showed that tacrolimus does not significantly impact the viability of stem cell spheroids in osteogenic media, even at high concentrations. It also suggests that tacrolimus may enhance osteogenic differentiation, as indicated by increased calcium deposition and COL1A1 expression. These findings advance our understanding of tacrolimus's potential roles in tissue repair, regeneration, and stem cell-based therapeutic applications.

ABSTRACT

East Asian countries have been conducting source apportionment of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) by applying positive matrix factorization (PMF) to hourly constituent concentrations. However, some of the constituent data from the supersites in South Korea was missing due to instrument maintenance and calibration. Conventional preprocessing of missing values, such as exclusion or median replacement, causes biases in the estimated source contributions by changing the PMF input. Machine learning (ML) can estimate the missing values by training on constituent data, meteorological data, and gaseous pollutants. Complete data from the Seoul Supersite in 2018 was taken, and a random 20% was set as missing. PMF was performed by replacing missing values with estimates. Percent errors of the source contributions were calculated compared to those estimated from complete data. Missing values were estimated using a random forest analysis. Estimation accuracy (r2) was as high as 0.874 for missing carbon species and low at 0.631 when ionic species and trace elements were missing. For the seven highest contributing sources, replacing the missing values of carbon species with estimates minimized the percent errors to 2.0% on average. However, replacing the missing values of the other chemical species with estimates increased the percent errors to more than 9.7% on average. Percent errors were maximal at 37% on average when missing values of ionic species and trace elements were replaced with estimates. Missing values, except for carbon species, need to be excluded. This approach reduced the percent errors to 7.4% on average, which was lower than those due to median replacement. Our results show that reducing the biases in source apportionment is possible by replacing the missing values of carbon species with estimates. To improve the biases due to missing values of the other chemical species, the estimation accuracy of the ML needs to be improved.

ABSTRACT

During the cold season in South Korea, NO3- concentrations are known to significantly increase, often causing PM2.5 to exceed air quality standards. This study investigated the formation mechanisms of NO3- in a suburban area with low anthropogenic emissions. The average PM2.5 was 25.3 µg m-3, with NO3- identified as the largest contributor. Ammonium-rich conditions prevailed throughout the study period, coupled with low atmospheric temperature facilitating the transfer of gaseous HNO3 into the particulate phase. This result indicates that the formation of HNO3 played a crucial role in determining particulate NO3- concentration. Nocturnal increases in NO3- were observed alongside increasing ozone (O3) and relative humidity (RH), emphasizing the significance of heterogeneous reactions involving N2O5. NO3- concentrations at the study site were notably higher than in Seoul, the upwind metropolitan area, during a high concentration episode. This difference could potentially attributed to lower local NO concentrations, which enhanced the reaction between O3 and NO2, to produce NO3 radicals. High concentrations of Cl- and dust were also identified as contributors to the elevated NO3- concentrations.

Objective: We compared the osteoblastogenesis by serially administrating recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) and osteoprotegerin-immunoglobulin Fc segment complex (OPG-Fc). Methods: The MC3T3-E1 preosteoblast cell line was differentiated for 1, 3, and 7 days with a treatment of OPG-Fc in 10~200 ng/mL concentration and the cell viability was evaluated by Cell Counting Kit-8 analysis. The level of differentiation from MC3T3-E1 cells to osteoblasts was determined by alkaline phosphatase activity. The level of runt domain-containing transcription factor 2 (Runx2) and osteopontin (OPN) manifestation, involved in osteoblast differentiation, was examined by real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blotting. Results: During MC3T3-E1 cell differentiation, the differentiation level was high with 1-day treatment using 100 ng/mL OPG-Fc. The treatment with 50 ng/mL rhBMP-2 for 7 days, followed by 1-day treatment with 100 ng/mL OPG-Fc produced the highest differentiation level, which was approximately 5.3 times that of the control group (p<0.05). The expression of Runx2 mRNA significantly increased, reaching 2.5 times the level of the control group under the condition of 7-day treatment with rhBMP-2 and 1-day treatment with OPG-Fc (p<0.001). The expression of Runx2 protein significantly increased to approximately 5.7 times that of the control group under the condition of 7-day treatment with rhBMP-2, followed by 1-day treatment with OPG-Fc (p<0.01). The expression of OPN protein showed no change from that of the control group under various conditions of rhBMP-2 and OPG-Fc combinations. Conclusion: These results imply that the treating preosteoblasts with rhBMP-2 first and then with OPG-Fc increased osteoblast differentiation efficacy.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impacts of enzymatically synthesized α-glucans possessing α-1,4- and α-1,6-glucose linkages, and varying in branching ratio, on colonic microbiota composition and metabolic function. Four different α-glucans varying in branching ratio were synthesized by amylosucrase from Neisseria polysaccharea and glycogen branching enzyme from Rhodothermus obamensis. The branching ratios were found to range from 0 % to 2.8 % using GC/MS. In vitro fecal fermentation analyses (n = 8) revealed that the branching ratio dictates the short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) generation by fecal microbiota. Specifically, slightly branched (0.49 %) α-glucan resulted in generation of significantly (P < 0.05) higher amounts of propionate, compared to more-branched counterparts. In addition, the amount of butyrate generated from this α-glucan was statistically (P > 0.05) indistinguishable than those observed in resistant starches. 16S rRNA sequencing revealed that enzymatically synthesized α-glucans stimulated Lachnospiraceae and Ruminococcus related OTUs. Overall, the results demonstrated metabolic function of colonic microbiota can be manipulated by altering the branching ratio of enzymatically synthesized α-glucans, providing insights into specific structure-function relationships between dietary fibers and the colonic microbiome. Furthermore, the slightly branched α-glucans could be used as functional carbohydrates to stimulate the beneficial microbiota and SCFAs in the colon.

Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC), once called calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor, is classified under the category of odontogenic cysts. However, the proliferative capacity of the lesional epithelium and consistent nuclear ß-catenin expression raise questions about its current classification. This study aimed to determine whether COC would be better classified as a neoplasm in the histologic and molecular context. Eleven odontogenic lesions diagnosed as COC or calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor were included in this study. The growth patterns of the lesional epithelium were analyzed histologically in all cases. ß-catenin immunohistochemistry and molecular profiling using Sanger sequencing and whole-exome sequencing were performed in 10 cases. Of the 11 cases studied, histologic features reminiscent of so-called adenoid ameloblastoma were observed in 72.7% (8/11), and small islands of clear cells extended into the wall in 36.4% (4/11). Intraluminal and/or mural epithelial proliferation was found in 72.7% of the cases (8/11). Nuclear ß-catenin expression was observed focally in all 10 cases studied, mainly highlighting epithelial cells forming morules and adjacent to dentinoid. CTNNB1 hotspot mutations were detected in 60.0% of the cases (6/10). All the remaining cases had frameshift mutations in tumor-suppressor genes involved in the WNT pathway, including APC and NEDD4L. Recurrent WNT pathway mutations leading to nuclear translocation of ß-catenin and distinct epithelial growth patterns found in COC are the neoplastic features shared by its solid counterpart, dentinogenic ghost cell tumor, supporting its classification as a tumor rather than a cyst.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to examine factors influencing depression according to gender in people during COVID-19. METHODS: This study was conducted on 61,147 elderly individuals over the age of 65 who participated in the 2020 Community Health Survey (CHS). Data analysis was conducted using SAS 9.4. RESULTS: Elderly females had a higher perceived fear of COVID-19 than males. The common factors affecting depression in elderly individuals were age, monthly income, economic activity, stress, subjective health status, and social support. Among elderly women, changes in residential areas and daily life due to COVID-19 were identified as factors affecting depression. CONCLUSIONS: Therefore, during COVID-19, it was necessary to provide customized depression relief programs for the elderly, and it was necessary to find ways for them to positively perceive their health status and increase healthcare efficacy. In the future, it is necessary to pay attention to elderly women living in rural areas and make efforts to ensure that their daily lives are not interrupted by infectious diseases.

BACKGROUND: Despite recent advances in the use of immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) across various cancer types, its efficacy in odontogenic carcinomas remains unexplored. This study aims to investigate PD-L1 expression and the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) in odontogenic carcinomas to determine the therapeutic potential of ICB and the significance of immune markers. METHODS: The expressions of PD-L1 and T cell markers (CD3, CD8, and FOXP3) were visualized by immunohistochemistry in 21 tissue samples of odontogenic carcinomas. Tumoral PD-L1 expression and the density and spatial distribution of T cell subsets were evaluated, from which TIME was determined. The associations of the variables with clinicopathological and prognostic factors were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: PD-L1 was positively expressed in 52.4% (11/21) of the cases studied. Among tumor types, ameloblastic carcinoma showed significantly higher PD-L1 expression (p = 0.016). TIME based on the intratumoral and stromal T cell distribution was immune-inflamed in 61.9% (13/21) and immune-excluded in 38.1% (8/21), with no immune-desert cases. PD-L1 expression was associated with the densities of all intratumoral T cell subsets (p = 0.03 for CD3, p = 0.03 for CD8, and p = 0.008 for FOXP3) but not with those of stromal T cells. High PD-L1 expression was associated with larger tumor size (p = 0.021), while the intratumoral CD8/CD3 ratio was inversely correlated with tumor size (p = 0.048). CONCLUSION: These findings indicate the involvement of adaptive immune resistance in a subset of odontogenic carcinomas and support the therapeutic potential of ICB in patients with these rare malignancies.

ABSTRACT

Central nervous system (CNS) embryonal tumors are a heterogeneous group of high-grade malignancies, and the increasing clinical use of methylation profiling and next-generation sequencing has led to the identification of molecularly distinct subtypes. One proposed tumor type, CNS tumor with BRD4::LEUTX fusion, has been described. As only a few CNS tumors with BRD4::LEUTX fusions have been described, we herein characterize a cohort of 9 such cases (4 new, 5 previously published) to further describe their clinicopathologic and molecular features. We demonstrate that CNS embryonal tumor with BRD4::LEUTX fusion comprises a well-defined methylation class/cluster. We find that patients are young (4 years or younger), with large tumors at variable locations, and frequently with evidence of leptomeningeal/cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dissemination. Histologically, tumors were highly cellular with high-grade embryonal features. Immunohistochemically, 5/5 cases showed synaptophysin and 4/5 showed OLIG2 expression, thus overlapping with CNS neuroblastoma, FOXR2-activated. DNA copy number profiles were generally flat; however, two tumors had chromosome 1q gains. No recurring genomic changes, besides the presence of the fusion, were found. The LEUTX portion of the fusion transcript was constant in all cases assessed, while the BRD4 portion varied but included a domain with proto-oncogenic activity in all cases. Two patients with clinical follow up available had tumors with excellent response to chemotherapy. Two of our patients were alive without evidence of recurrence or progression after gross total resection and chemotherapy at 16 and 33 months. One patient relapsed, and the last of our four patients died of disease one month after diagnosis. Overall, this case series provides additional evidence for this as a distinct tumor type defined by the presence of a specific fusion as well as a distinct DNA methylation signature. Studies on larger series are required to further characterize these tumors.

ABSTRACT

Industrial cities are strongly influenced by primary emissions of PM2.5 from local industries. In addition, gaseous precursors, such as sulfur oxides (SOX), nitrogen oxides (NOX), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), emitted from industrial sources, undergo conversion into secondary inorganic and organic aerosols (SIAs and SOAs). In this study, the spatial distributions of primary and secondary PM2.5 in Ulsan, the largest industrial city in South Korea, were visualized. PM2.5 components (ions, carbons, and metals) and PM2.5 precursors (SO2, NO2, NH3, and VOCs) were measured to estimate the concentrations of secondary inorganic ions (SO42-, NO3-, and NH4+) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP). The spatial distributions of SIAs and SOAs were then plotted by combining atmospheric dispersion modeling, receptor modeling, and monitoring data. Spatial distribution maps of primary and secondary PM2.5 provide fundamental insights for formulating management policies in different districts of Ulsan. For instance, among the five districts in Ulsan, Nam-gu exhibited the highest levels of primary PM2.5 and secondary nitrate. Consequently, controlling both PM2.5 and NO2 emissions becomes essential in this district. The methodology developed in this study successfully identified areas with dominant contributions from both primary emissions and secondary formation. This approach can be further applied to prioritize control measures during periods of elevated PM levels in other industrial cities.

ABSTRACT

Gas-phase NH3 is one of the significant contributors to secondary aerosol formation in the atmosphere, and it is a crucial consideration in any strategy aiming to reduce PM2.5 emissions. This study aimed to investigate the spatial distributions of NH3 in verity source areas in Republic of Korea using passive samplers. NH3 concentrations were observed at 45 locations over a period of approximately 35 weeks, from June 2022 to February 2023. As a result, NH3 concentration was found to be more affected by local sources rather than long-distance influx from outside. The average concentration of NH3 observed in 7 source areas excluding the background area was all less than 20.91 ppb, except for livestock sources. These results suggest that atmospheric NH3 concentrations are significantly influenced from livestock sources. In addition, in major cities, the need for NH3 management was confirmed to be more focused on emissions from automobiles and industrial complexes than emissions from livestock and farmland. Moreover, even for the same source, NH3 concentrations varied depending on the type of livestock species, breeding methods and scale, products produced, crops cultivated, and vehicle traffic volume. These findings indicate the importance of considering factors such as breeding methods and manure treatment practices in emission factors, and it is expected that the results can be used as basic data for NH3 emission estimation and management.

ABSTRACT

The bluetongue virus (BTV) is a significant animal pathogen with economic implications in the ruminant industry. Despite global reports on BTV detection and epidemiologic investigations, limited studies have focused on the virus in the ROK. In this study, BTV epidemiological research was conducted on blood samples from cattle and goat farms across nine regions during 2013-2014. The results showed that 3.33% of bovine blood samples (194/5824) and 0.19% of goat blood samples (2/1075) tested positive for BTV antibodies using ELISA. In Jeju-do, BTV RNA amplification occurred in 51 of 422 samples (12.1%) using real-time reverse transcription (RT-qPCR). The isolation of one sample revealed it as serotype 3, as indicated by the sequence of segments 2 (Seg-2) and 6 (Seg-6), associated with the eastern BTV topotype. However, based on Seg-1, -3, -4, -5, -7, -8, -9, and -10 analyses, the BTV-3/JJBB35 strain is more closely related to distinct BTV strains. These findings imply BTV circulation and that the Korean-isolated BTV might originate from Asian BTV strains due to multiple reassortment events. This study provides foundational data for ongoing BTV monitoring and disease-control policies in the ROK.

ABSTRACT

Sialadenoma papilliferum-like intraductal papillary tumour (SP-IPT) is a recently described salivary gland tumour that shows identical morphology to sialadenoma papilliferum (SP) except for the lack of an exophytic papillary component. However, the immunohistochemical phenotypes and molecular profiles of SP-IPT remain unclear. This study aims to report new cases of SP-IPT and to determine its cellular differentiation and molecular basis. After histopathological review, four cases of SP-IPT were retrieved. Immunohistochemical staining was performed to analyse the expression patterns of cytokeratin 7 (CK7), p63, smooth muscle actin (SMA), vimentin, S100, mammaglobin, androgen receptor, SOX10, BRAF V600E-mutated protein, and phosphorylated ERK. Sanger sequencing was performed to determine the mutation status of the BRAF, KRAS, NRAS, and HRAS genes. All four cases affected the posterior mandible with a mean age of 62 years and a male-to-female ratio of 3:1. Histologically, all cases consisted of multiple tubular and cystic structures with varying sizes and shapes. The tubulocystic components were lined by a double or few-layered epithelium frequently showing a micropapillary pattern. The outer layer consisted of a rim of myoepithelial cells, which were CK7+/p63+/SMA+/vimentin+/S100+/SOX10+. The inner ductal cells were CK7+/S100+/SOX10+, consistent with intercalated duct differentiation. All cases harboured BRAF V600E mutations, but no other mutations were detected. The BRAF V600E-mutated protein and phosphorylated ERK were expressed in both ductal and myoepithelial cells. These findings demonstrate the immunohistochemical and molecular similarities between SP-IPT and SP and the role and extent of MAPK pathway activation in the pathogenesis of SP-IPT.

ABSTRACT

Although most CD8+ T cells are equipped to kill infected or transformed cells, a subset may regulate immune responses and preserve self-tolerance. Here, we describe a CD8 lineage that is instructed to differentiate into CD8 T regulatory cells (Tregs) by a surprisingly restricted set of T cell receptors (TCRs) that recognize MHC-E (mouse Qa-1) and several dominant self-peptides. Recognition and elimination of pathogenic target cells that express these Qa-1-self-peptide complexes selectively inhibits pathogenic antibody responses without generalized immune suppression. Immunization with synthetic agonist peptides that mobilize CD8 Tregs in vivo efficiently inhibit antigraft antibody responses and markedly prolong heart and kidney organ graft survival. Definition of TCR-dependent differentiation and target recognition by this lineage of CD8 Tregs may open the way to new therapeutic approaches to inhibit pathogenic antibody responses.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the roles of community pharmacists (CPs) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the differences in their role performance compared with their perceived importance, and limiting factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey of CPs was conducted. The CPs self-measured the importance and performance of each role during the pandemic using a 5-point Likert scale. A paired t-test was used to compare each role's importance and performance scores. A logistic regression analysis of the roles with low performance scores, despite their level of importance, was conducted to determine the factors affecting performance. The limiting factors were also surveyed. RESULTS: The 436 responses to the questionnaire were analyzed. The performance scores were significantly lower than the perceived importance scores for 15 of the 17 roles. The source and update frequency of COVID-19 information and participation in outreach pharmaceutical services were associated with low performance scores. Insufficient economic compensation, the lack of communication channels, and legal limitations were the limiting factors in performing the CPs' roles. CONCLUSIONS: The participation in outreach pharmaceutical services, economic compensation, and communication channel should be improved to motivate the CPs in performing their roles.
