ABSTRACT

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) leafy greens (QLGs) are plant-based foods of high nutritional value that have been scarcely studied. In this work, the nutritional and functional composition of three QLGs varieties was evaluated. A protein content higher than 35 g 100 g-1 dw with a well-balanced essential amino acid composition was found making them a good source of vegetable protein. In addition, elevated contents of dietary fibre and minerals, higher than those detected in quinoa seeds and other leafy vegetables, were found. The lipid profile showed higher contents of linoleic (C18:2, ω6) (20.2 %) and linolenic acids (C18:3, ω3) (52.8 %) with low ω6/ ω3 ratios (∼0.4/1). A total sugar content <1 g 100 g-1 dw was found for all varieties tested, lower than that obtained in seeds. The saponin content varied between 0.76 and 0.87 %. Also, high values of total phenolic compounds (969.8-1195.4 mg gallic acid 100 g-1), mainly hydroxycinnamic acids and flavonoids, and great antioxidant activities (7.64-8.90 g Trolox kg-1) were found. Multivariate analysis here used allowed us to classify the samples according to the quinoa variety evaluated, and the sequential stepwise multiple regression applied revealed that the PUFA and sucrose contents negatively influenced the protein content while the palmitic acid content affected positively this parameter. Overall, this study shows that QLGs are promising nutritious and functional plant-based foods supporting the necessity of promoting their cultivation, commercialization, and consumption.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a descriptive study of visual contrast sensitivity on 224 healthy Mexican individuals. Central tendency measures, Student's t test, as well as simple frequencies were the statistical tests used for data analysis. A format to evaluate visual contrast sensitivity adequate to healthy Mexican population is proposed, taking into account that the normal visual contrast sensitivity curve of Mexicans was found to be lower than the international standards.

ABSTRACT

We present a case of duodenal gallstone ileus (Bouveret's syndrome) that evolved with its classical symptomatology and was successfully managed by endoscopic extraction of the stone, an extremely unusual circumstance. Although difficult and laborious, endoscopic therapy in the Bouveret's syndrome, by using the Dormia basket, may prove useful.

ABSTRACT

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy is a technique scantly used in Spanish hospitals. Its finality is the nutrition of patients with dysphagia, by avoiding the inconveniences and complications of transnasal feeding tubes. Our group has begun a protocol of endoscopically placed gastrostomies and in this work we present its first series; it includes 23 cases of patients with dysphagia secondary to neurological disorders. We have employed the original "pull technique" from Gauderer and Ponsky and we have used homemade gastrostomy tubes. Only two mild complications were observed (stoma infection). In our experience, this technique is easy and has few complications. Furthermore, if homemade tubes are used, the economic cost is very low. In this paper, beside of communicating our results, we summarize the percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy technique and the way for constructing the tubes.

ABSTRACT

We present the case of a 39 year old woman with 36 weeks pregnancy and acute myocardial infarction seen at the Hospital ABC. Acute myocardial infarction during pregnancy is not very common and it's incidence has been calculated in 1:10,000 pregnancies it takes place more often during the third trimester, so we have to keep it in mind for early diagnosis. Mortality increases when it occurs during the third trimester close to delivery, during labor or in the first 7 days post delivery. Initial management of this high risk patients has to be done in a intensive care unit and requires of the intervention of multiple specialists, to decrease maternal and fetal mortality.

ABSTRACT

Unilateral phrenic nerve block is common after supraclavicular brachial plexus block techniques, although it is rarely symptomatic in patients without respiratory disease. A 24-weeks-pregnant woman was scheduled for a carpal tunnel release because of intractable pain. After a perivascular subclavian brachial plexus block with 30 ml of 0.33% plain bupivacaine was performed, the patient developed a right phrenic nerve block manifested by acute dyspnea and cough. No deleterious consequences followed, but surgery was canceled. Respiratory changes produced by pregnancy might compromise ventilatory reserve. Thus, we suggest avoiding supraclavicular approaches to brachial plexus block in pregnant women, since they may be as prone to developing respiratory embarrassment, secondary to phrenic block, as patients with pulmonary pathology.
