ABSTRACT

Braiding is one of the most common technique employed for the manufacture of fabrics and ropes. It is also commonly used to produce near-net shaped preforms for advanced fibre reinforced composites. This paper presents an explicit finite element approach to create and simulate the braiding process for the virtual manufacture of 2D braids. The process starts from the definition of an analytical function which describes the movement of the carriers on a braiding track plate. Models of idealised Maypole-type braiding machines are built and used to shape virtual yarns into braids. This procedure can be used in a parameter control fashion, to optimise or to create virtual braided structures, which can serve as input for other structural analyses. It is emphasised that multiple cylinders are required for the modelling of a multifilament yarn to achieve better correlation with the experimental results. A parametric study is presented to investigate the effect of the number of virtual cylinders to represent a real yarn and the shape of the final braid. Excellent correlation was found between the virtual models and the experimental results when comparing the braid angle and yarn width.

ABSTRACT

The fibre-volume-fraction (FVF) measurement of fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) is crucial in understanding and characterising their mechanical performance. To date, there has not been a standardised, labour-efficient method in determining the FVF of a non-crimp fabric (NCF) carbon reinforced thermoplastic composites (CFRTPs). An alternative method such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) has merely been commonly used for carbon-fibre reinforced thermosets (CFRTSs) and glass-fibre reinforced thermosets (GFRTSs). Therefore, this paper reports a range of macro TGA measurements of the constituent materials of two NCF CFRTPs; (i) T700 carbon/polyamide6.6 (PA6.6) and (ii) T700 carbon/polyphenylene sulphide (PPS). The TGA measurements were performed using two different purge gases (air and nitrogen) and the mass degradation with respect to time, temperature and atmospheres were recorded and discussed. Additionally, fractographic analysis on the fibres was carried out to scrutinise and further discuss the findings following the TGA. It was concluded that TGA provided a suitable and reliable alternative method to measure the FVF of CFRTPs.

ABSTRACT

Solitons are proposed as the agents of plastic and viscoelastic deformation in aligned polyethylene. Interactions between straight, parallel molecules are mapped rigorously onto the Frenkel-Kontorova model. It is shown that these molecular interactions distribute an applied load between molecules, with a characteristic transfer length equal to the soliton width. Load transfer leads to the introduction of tensile and compressive solitons at the chain ends to mark the onset of plasticity at a well-defined yield stress, which is much less than the theoretical pull-out stress. Interaction energies between solitons and an equation of motion for solitons are derived. The equation of motion is based on Langevin dynamics and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem and it leads to the rigorous definition of an effective mass for solitons. It forms the basis of a soliton dynamics in direct analogy to dislocation dynamics. Close parallels are drawn between solitons in aligned polymers and dislocations in crystals, including the configurational force on a soliton. The origins of the strain rate and temperature dependencies of the viscoelastic behaviour are discussed in terms of the formation energy of solitons. A failure mechanism is proposed involving soliton condensation under a tensile load.

ABSTRACT

Many developing tissues display regenerative capability that allows them to compensate cell loss and preserve tissue homeostasis. Because of their remarkable regenerative capability, Drosophila wing discs are extensively used for the study of regenerative phenomena. We thus used the developing wing to investigate the role played in tissue homeostasis by the evolutionarily conserved eukaryotic H/ACA small nucleolar ribonucleoprotein pseudouridine synthase. Here we show that localized depletion of this enzyme can act as an endogenous stimulus capable of triggering apoptosis-induced proliferation, and that context-dependent effects are elicited in different sub-populations of the silenced cells. In fact, some cells undergo apoptosis, whereas those surrounding the apoptotic foci, although identically depleted, overproliferate. This overproliferation correlates with ectopic induction of the Wg and JAK-STAT (Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription) mitogenic pathways. Expression of a p35 transgene, which blocks the complete execution of the death program and generates the so-called 'undead cells', amplifies the proliferative response. Pseudouridine synthase depletion also causes loss of apicobasal polarity, disruption of adherens cell junctions and ectopic induction of JNK (c-Jun N-terminal kinase) and Mmp1 (matrix metalloproteinase-1) activity, leading to a significant epithelial reorganization. Unexpectedly, cell-nonautonomous effects, such as epithelial mesenchymal transition in the contiguous unsilenced squamous epithelium, are also promoted. Collectively, these data point out that cell-cell communication and long-range signaling can take a relevant role in the response to pseudouridine synthase decline. Considering that all the affected pathways are highly conserved throughout evolution, it is plausible that the response to pseudouridine synthase depletion has been widely preserved. On this account, our results can add new light on the still unexplained tumor predisposition that characterizes X-linked dyskeratosis, the human disease caused by reduced pseudouridine synthase activity.

ABSTRACT

Patients have a privileged perspective on health care quality, thus it is important to obtain from them judgments about offered services. Currently, there are no well developed quality monitoring systems related to the patient's perspective, though Istat data sources would b helpful on this issues. We performed a descriptive analysis relating to the satisfaction degree of Italian population for hospital admissions between 1997and 2009. Data were taken from the Istat Multipurpose analysis on some aspect of daylife. Our results show a positive appraisal for medical and nursing assistance; however the rating for the quality of food is lower Our analysis would give a contribution to the appraisal of an outstanding dimension of patients' appraisal of quality of care among the Regions, by considering the implementation of devolution in healthcare since 2001.
