ABSTRACT

In a series of Drosophila mutants with changes in the brain structure, some characters (reduced life span, behavioral changes, and neuronal loss in various brain regions) resemble symptoms observed in human patients with neurodegenerative diseases. In addition, similar specific phenotypes shared by different species suggest that common mechanisms underlie degeneration of their nerve cell. This study reports the results of a genetic analysis of new X-chromosome mutants with neurodegenerative changes in brain structure, which were induced by chemical mutagenesis. According to complementation test, all mutants were divided into three complementation groups, in which the life span and dynamics of neurodegenerative changes were studied. The life span of Drosophila melanogaster flies was found to depend on the state of their nervous system.

ABSTRACT

Experiments proved higher carcinogenicity of chrisotyle-asbestos than of dust appearing in mechanical processing of asbestos-containing details and in wearing articulated shoe brakes. Substitution of asbestos for basalt fibers leaves oncologic risk intact among workers engaged into mechanical processing of asbestos-containing brakes. Avoiding asbestos in mixtures for brakes could lower risk. Results support conclusions obtained by cohort studies in Yaroslavl.

ABSTRACT

Asbestos fibres discharged as a result of machine processing of brakes, are characterized by a lowered biological activity due to the fixation layer which covers them. This has been confirmed through occupational diseases' analysis and new data on malignant neoplasms epidemiology among workers engaged in machine processing of asbestos-moulded machine parts. General mortality caused by malignant neoplasms in these groups higher than in the control group, although statistically is not significant. This necessitates further epidemiologic studies to be performed at similar plants.
