ABSTRACT

Secondary cysts of the iris or anterior chamber follow penetrating trauma or surgery of the cornea. These can lead to some serious complications. We describe a case of an intraocular implantation dermoid cyst of the iris that followed a perforating injury of the cornea in a seven-year old Saudi child. The cyst was surgically removed and proved histologically.

ABSTRACT

The authors studied 1,681 consecutive patients who attended their ophthalmic outpatient clinics over a period of 12 months to determine the patients' visual acuity status and the causes of any visual loss. Using the World Health Organization criteria for definition of visual acuity status, 1004 (59.7%) patients had normal vision. Four hundred and thirty-one (25.6%) patients had low vision or visual impairment and 246 (14.6%) patients were blind. Twenty-eight (1.9%) patients had no light perception in both eyes. Cataract, both in isolation and co-existing with other ocular pathology, was the major cause of both low vision and blindness (58.5% and 81.7%, respectively). A concerted attack on cataract alone will markedly reduce blindness and low vision in this region.

ABSTRACT

Eighty six patients with a total of 125 pterygium-affected eyes were treated by surgical excision and one of three post-operative topical, medical adjuvants--antibiotics, steroids or Opticrom--to try and control the recurrence rate. The result showed that opticrom 2% ophthalmic drops was most effective in controlling pterygium recurrence. Steroids proved more effective than antibiotics.

ABSTRACT

A case of intraocular coenurosis was clinically diagnosed and treated with praziquantel. The drug destroyed the coenurus, but vision was lost through toxic endophthalmitis and retinal detachment. There were no systemic side effects.

ABSTRACT

Two neonates had bilateral congenital prolapse of the superior fornices of the conjunctiva and complete ectropion of the upper eyelids treated successfully with early surgery. We discuss the pathogenesis of this rare condition.

ABSTRACT

One hundred and forty one pterygium-affected and 50 control eyes were examined. It was found that in most of the pterygium-affected and control eyes (85.7% and 79.4% respectively) astigmatism was with-the-rule. It was also found that overall the degree of astigmatism was higher in pterygium-affected eyes (Av. 1.56D) than in control eyes (Av. 0.92D). The degree of astigmatism was much higher in recurrent pterygium eyes when considered separately (Av. 1.81D). Visual impairment in both pterygium-affected and control eyes was in most cases due to co-existing organic diseases. In the remaining pterygium eyes without other organic diseases, the visual impairment could not be correlated with the degree of astigmatism (r = 0.547).

ABSTRACT

Fifteen patients were treated with simultaneous pterygium and intraocular surgery. Eleven of them had pterygium excision with cataract extraction, while four had pterygium excision with trabeculectomy. There was no evidence of increased risk of pterygium recurrence or of complications following cataract operation or trabeculectomy as a result of the combined procedure. In an environment where pterygium is endemic and medical facilities inadequate a combined procedure is recommended to save time and cost.
