ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common health problems worldwide and mainly affect women. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of UTIs in pregnant women and determine the antimicrobial resistance patterns of bacterial pathogens isolated from pregnant and nonpregnant women in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted at an academic medical center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from January to June 2022. The study included all urine cultures performed for adult women during the study period. We excluded urine culture performed for women on antibiotics prescribed for any infection, children, and men. Using the SPSS (version 27) package, descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were used to analyze the data, and p < 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance. RESULTS: A total of 2,418 urine cultures performed during the study period were included (985 and 1,433 for pregnant and nonpregnant women, respectively). The overall prevalence of UTIs in pregnant women was 5% (95% CI 3.6-6.4); 10 (1%) women were symptomatic, and 40 (4%) women were asymptomatic. Of the entire cohort, 244 (10.1%) women were diagnosed with UTIs based on bacterial cultures. The predominant bacteria in both pregnant and nonpregnant women were Escherichia coli (134, 54.9%), followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (48, 19.6%). The antibiotic susceptibility criteria for Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae were as follows: nitrofurantoin (94% and 18.8%, respectively), amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (82.8% and 70.8%, respectively), ciprofloxacin (65.7% and 83.3%, respectively), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (65.7% and 79.2%, respectively) and cephalothin (47% and 68.8%, respectively). CONCLUSION: Compared to the findings of other similar studies, the prevalence of UTIs was lower in pregnant women. This may be because the patient population was composed of healthy and educated women who received prenatal education and underwent prenatal assessment as per institutional guidelines. Nitrofurantoin and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid are recommended for use as an empirical therapy for UTIs in pregnant and nonpregnant women because bacteria have the least amount of resistance to these drugs.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The study aimed to perform a population pharmacokinetic (PK) analysis to obtain vancomycin PK parameter estimates in Sudanese adult patients. The population PK model is then applied to perform model-based dose optimization. Patients and Methods: Data were collected through a retrospective, single-center, observational cohort study performed in Aliaa Specialist Hospital, Khartoum, Sudan. A population PK model was developed using the MonolixSuite 2020R1 to explore the potential effects of demographics and laboratory covariates on vancomycin PK. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to optimize dosage regimens as a function of creatinine clearance (CLcr) and virtual patients were partitioned into five CLcr groups. Results: We retrospectively collected 194 vancomycin plasma concentrations from 99 adults. The median (interquartile range) for age (years) and CLcr (mL/min) were 65 (50-75) and 12.7 (5.52-25.78), respectively. Vancomycin PK data were best fitted using a one-compartment model with linear elimination. The estimates of clearance and volume of distribution were 2.02 L/h and 65 L, respectively. CLcr was identified as the main covariate explaining the PK variability in vancomycin CL. CL significantly decreased with decreasing CLcr. For the five CLcr groups evaluated, a tailored vancomycin daily maintenance dose (using patients' CLcr) ranged from 200 to 1650 mg. Overall, simulations showed that 45% (CI; 41.11-47.36%) of patients would achieve a target AUC with the suggested dosages. Conclusion: A population PK model of vancomycin was developed using data obtained from adult Sudanese patients. Model-based dose optimization can aid clinicians in selecting initial vancomycin doses that will maximize the likelihood of a favorable treatment response.

Background and Objectives: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) poses a significant risk for end-stage renal disease (ESRD), cardiovascular diseases, and premature death. The study aims to assess CKD knowledge and predictive variables among the general public. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the general public in Al Medina Al-Munawara, Saudi Arabia, utilizing a 21-item questionnaire-based approach over a 4-month period from January 2023 to April 2023. The developed questionnaire was validated for readability by experts and refined in light of the feedback received from the experts and the final version was prepared. The reliability of the questionnaire was 0.71, which shows an acceptable level of internal consistency. The data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS software (version 25). Results: A total of 777 complete surveys were received after applying the exclusion criteria. The study results revealed that the majority of the respondents had poor knowledge 505 (65%), 203 (26.1) had moderate knowledge, and 69 (8.9%) had good knowledge. Gender (p = 0.004), age (<0.001), education level (p = 0.039), marital status (p = 0.003), and occupation (p = 0.002) play significant roles in shaping participants' knowledge levels regarding CKD. Lower odds of good knowledge were associated with females with an OR (95% CI) of 0.448 (0.263-0.764) and intermediate or higher secondary school level of education displayed an OR (95% CI) of 0.39 (0.18-0.89). Higher odds of good knowledge levels were associated with the age group of 18-27 with an OR (95% CI) of 5.077 (1.21-21.38) and being employed with an OR of 3.555 (1.04-12.21). Conclusions: A significant proportion of respondents had poor knowledge about CKD. Several demographic factors were associated with CKD knowledge. Further research is needed to explore these knowledge disparities and develop targeted interventions to improve CKD knowledge among the general public.

ABSTRACT

Background: Despite insufficient evidence, vitamin D has been used as adjunctive therapy in critically ill patients with COVID-19. This study evaluates the effectiveness and safety of vitamin D as an adjunctive therapy in critically ill COVID-19 patients. Methods: A multicenter retrospective cohort study that included all adult COVID-19 patients admitted to the intensive care units (ICUs) between March 2020 and July 2021. Patients were categorized into two groups based on their vitamin D use throughout their ICU stay (control vs. vitamin D). The primary endpoint was in-hospital mortality. Secondary outcomes were the length of stay (LOS), mechanical ventilation (MV) duration, and ICU-acquired complications. Propensity score (PS) matching (1:1) was used based on the predefined criteria. Multivariable logistic, Cox proportional hazards, and negative binomial regression analyses were employed as appropriate. Results: A total of 1,435 patients were included in the study. Vitamin D was initiated in 177 patients (12.3%), whereas 1,258 patients did not receive it. A total of 288 patients were matched (1:1) using PS. The in-hospital mortality showed no difference between patients who received vitamin D and the control group (HR 1.22, 95% CI 0.87-1.71; p = 0.26). However, MV duration and ICU LOS were longer in the vitamin D group (beta coefficient 0.24 (95% CI 0.00-0.47), p = 0.05 and beta coefficient 0.16 (95% CI -0.01 to 0.33), p = 0.07, respectively). As an exploratory outcome, patients who received vitamin D were more likely to develop major bleeding than those who did not [OR 3.48 (95% CI 1.10, 10.94), p = 0.03]. Conclusion: The use of vitamin D as adjunctive therapy in COVID-19 critically ill patients was not associated with survival benefits but was linked with longer MV duration, ICU LOS, and higher odds of major bleeding.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate public uptake, attitudes and the safety of the first and second doses of COVID-19 vaccination. Methods: This was a cross-sectional web-based survey study. A self-administered questionnaire was prepared from a literature search and information about COVID-19 available at various resources. The developed questionnaire was validated for readability by experts and refined in light of the feedback received from the experts and the final version was prepared. The reliability of the questionnaire was 0.7 which shows an acceptable level of scale internal consistency. The data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS software (version 25). Results: A total of 513 participants completed the survey, including 311 (60.6%) women and 202 (39.4%) men. The mean age was (31.5±12.8) years. It was found that 493 (96.1%) took the first and second doses of COVID-19 and 376 (73.3%) suffered from side effects, of these 14% (56/376) reported the side effects to the health authorities. The most common side effects were fatigue (51.5%), fever (42.3%), headache (39.5%), and injection site pain (37.6%). Half of the participants (50.5%) had a positive attitude towards COVID-19 preventive measures. Females had higher odds of experiencing side effects than males OR (95% CI); 2.002 (1.312-3.056). Individuals living in urban areas had lower odds of experiencing side effects than those living in rural areas OR (95% CI); 0.364 (0.142-0.933). Conclusion: Vaccine uptake was massive and side effects due to the COVID-19 vaccine were common but minor. The majority of the participants had positive attitudes towards recommended COVID-19 preventive measures. Being female and living in rural areas were associated with experiencing side effects.

Background and Objectives: Little is known regarding the 5C psychological antecedents to COVID-19 vaccination among pharmacists in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to assess the acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination and its psychological antecedents among community pharmacists in Khartoum State, Sudan. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from July to September 2022. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data about sociodemographic and health status characteristics, vaccine acceptance, and the 5C psychological antecedents to vaccination. Stepwise logistic regression analysis was conducted, and results were presented using odds ratios (ORs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: A total of 382 community pharmacists participated in the current study, with a mean age of 30.4 ± 5.6 years. Nearly two-thirds of the participants (65.4%) were females, and the majority (74.9%) have received or intended to receive the COVID-19 vaccination. Vaccine acceptance was significantly associated with the following psychological antecedents to vaccination: confidence, complacency, constraints, and calculation (p < 0.001). Results of the logistic regression showed that confidence in vaccines [OR = 6.82 (95% CI = 3.14-14.80)], conspiracy beliefs [OR = 0.44 (95% CI = 0.23-0.85)], and constraints to vaccination [OR = 0.18 (95% CI = 0.06-0.56)] were the significant determinants of vaccine acceptance. Conclusion: The study revealed important predictors of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance that can be used to guide policymakers in designing target-oriented interventions that can improve the vaccine acceptance rate among community pharmacists in Sudan. These findings suggest that interventions to promote vaccine acceptance among pharmacists should focus on building confidence in vaccines and providing accurate information about the safety and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine, and reducing constraints to vaccination.

ABSTRACT

Arrhythmia is an important cause of death after myocardial infarction (MI). Different substances have been evaluated for their anti-arrhythmic effect in MI. This study was performed to evaluate the anti-arrhythmic impacts of crocin in an MI animal model (rat) by estimation of the expression of connexin 43 (Cx43). Fifty male Sprague-Dawley rats were grouped into 5 groups, each composed of 10 rats. The first group was regarded as the normal control group and the second one was considered as the MI group, which was caused by ligation of the left anterior descending artery. The other three groups received crocin 50 or 10 mg/kg/day or metoprolol 100 mg/kg/day for 1 week, following ligation of the left anterior descending artery. Evaluated outcomes were cardiac Cx43 expression, arrhythmia incidence, histological findings, and myocyte resting potential. Crocin-treated MI groups showed a significantly lower arrhythmia score than the non-treated MI group, 10 mg/kg/day (1.85 ± 0.55, p < 0.01) and 50 mg/kg/day (1.70 ± 0.33, p < 0.01). Groups that received crocin 10 mg/kg/day (66.30 ± 2.59, p < 0.01), crocin 50 mg/kg/day (68.10 ± 2.43, p < 0.01), and metoprolol 100 mg/kg/day (-63.54 ± 0.63 mV, p < 0.01) significantly prevented depolarization in comparison with the non-treated MI group. Expression of Cx43 mRNA in crocin 10 mg/kg/day (1.54 ± 0.24, p < 0.01), crocin 50 mg/kg/day (1.73 ± 0.09, p < 0.01), and metoprolol 100 mg/kg/day (1.75 ± 0.14, p < 0.01) treatment groups was significantly higher in comparison with the non-treated MI group. Crocin showed a preventive effect on the arrhythmogenic impact of MI in an experimental model of ischemic injury through an increase in expression of Cx43.

BACKGROUND: The world has been battling several vector-borne diseases since time immemorial. Socio-economic marginality, precipitation variations and human behavioral attributes play a major role in the proliferation of these diseases. Lockdown and social distancing have affected social behavioral aspects of human life and somehow impact on the spread of vector borne diseases. This article sheds light into the relationship between COVID-19 lockdown and global dengue burden with special focus on India. It also focuses on the interconnection of the COVID-19 pandemic (waves 1 and 2) and the alteration of human behavioral patterns in dengue cases. METHODS: We performed a systematic search using various resources from different platforms and websites, such as Medline; Pubmed; PAHO; WHO; CDC; ECDC; Epidemiology Unit Ministry of Health (Sri Lanka Government); NASA; NVBDCP from 2015 until 2021. We have included many factors, such as different geographical conditions (tropical climate, semitropic and arid conditions); GDP rate (developed nations, developing nations, and underdeveloped nations). We also categorized our data in order to conform to COVID-19 duration from 2019 to 2021. Data was extracted for the complete duration of 10 years (2012 to 2021) from various countries with different geographical region (arid region, semitropic/semiarid region and tropical region). RESULTS: There was a noticeable reduction in dengue cases in underdeveloped (70-85%), developing (50-90%), and developed nations (75%) in the years 2019 and 2021. The dengue cases drastically reduced by 55-65% with the advent of COVID-19 s wave in the year 2021 across the globe. CONCLUSIONS: At present, we can conclude that COVID-19 and dengue show an inverse relationship. These preliminary, data-based observations should guide clinical practice until more data are made public and basis for further medical research.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy drug handling and occupational exposure are topics of concern for a variety of oncology health care professionals. Inappropriate handling can pose health risks to practitioners particularly, those who handle them on a daily basis. Therefore, this study aimed to assess chemotherapy handling practices among oncology pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using an online survey with a structured pre-validated questionnaire. Data was collected from pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who handle chemotherapeutic agents in Saudi Arabia, and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS: A total of 79 oncology pharmacy practitioners responded to the survey. The majority (92.4%) had written chemotherapy guidelines at their workplaces. Almost all participants (98.7%) reported the availability of protective gloves and gowns, however, the availability of eye protection was only 57%. Most used chemotherapy-designated gloves (83.6%), and gowns (86.1%). However, 54.4% have reused disposable gowns. The extent of utilization of most protective equipment ranged from 70% (always using closed system transfer device) to 98% (always using shoe cover); while the practice of always using eye protection and face shield was only 30.4% and 38%, respectively. With regard to cleaning practice, the work area was cleaned at least once a day by 35%; monthly decontamination (77%); certification by the biomedical department every 6 months (67%) and at least yearly (95%). Accidental exposure was reported by 28%, and the most common adverse effect was skin irritation (82%). There was no workplace medical surveillance available for 50%. The majority (88.6%) received relevant training, but not periodic updates on their training (38%). The main barriers against the use of personal protective equipment were: that some personal protective equipments were not always available (38%), and personal protective equipments were too uncomfortable to use (30.4%). The demographic variables did not have a statistically significant effect (p > 0.05) on the responses except for type of institution (workplace) on some of the cleaning practices that showed significant differences namely, the monthly decontamination and certification by the biomedical department. CONCLUSIONS: Most protective equipment and chemotherapy guidelines were available, and the majority of pharmacy practitioners adhered to many aspects of chemotherapy safe-handling practices. Nevertheless, some areas such as medical surveillance programs, use of eye protection and face shields, the practice of re-using disposable gowns, some of the barriers against personal protective equipment use, and the provision of periodic training need improvement for better protection of the health care professionals.

INTRODUCTION: Oral isotretinoin is an effective agent for the treatment of severe cystic acne. Isotretinoin is a teratogen; there is an increased risk of congenital defects in infants exposed to the drug in the uterus. The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has implemented a pregnancy prevention program (PPP) to protect females from those teratogenic effects. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the awareness of women, of reproductive age who were using Isotretinoin or used it previously, about isotretinoin use and the SFDA-approved PPP in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted during the period from June to October 2019. A questionnaire was developed based on the published literature and the PPP recommendations. The study was carried out online among female patients who were on Isotretinoin therapy or have used it previously in Riyadh city. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS for Windows, version 24) was used to analyze the study data. RESULTS: During the study period, 483 patients participated in the study. Among them, 97.3% reported that they used the drug based on a doctor's prescription, 94.6% were aware of Isotretinoin's teratogenic effect, and 30.6% confirmed their awareness of the PPP. Amongst the participants, 9.1% (n = 44) used Isotretinoin while being married or planning to get married within a one-month period after using it. Concerning the use of two contraceptive methods according to the PPP guidelines, of the participants, 43.2% reported that they have been informed by their healthcare providers to use two contraceptive methods before starting the medication. Also 43.2% reported that they have been informed to use two contraceptive methods while using the medication, and 50% reported that they have been informed to use two contraceptive methods for one month after stopping the medication. Regardless of the information they had, participants' actual practice, was as follow: 15.9% used two contraceptive methods before starting the medication, 15.9% used two contraceptive methods during the treatment, and 13.6% used two contraceptive methods for one month after stopping the medication. CONCLUSIONS: Although this study revealed that the vast majority of participants were aware of isotretinoin's teratogenic effect, still a considerable number of them had no idea about the PPP. This issue needs to greatly be addressed to minimize the risk of teratogenicity.

PURPOSE: This study aimed at describing the experience of academic staff and students with distance education, during the COVID-19 pandemic, at a college of pharmacy in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This study used a mixed-method approach. The first phase implemented a survey that targeted both academic staff and students to evaluate their experiences with distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, a focus group discussion was conducted to explore, in-depth, their experience. The survey consisted of five domains as follows: readiness for the shift to distance education during the full and partial lockdown, perception towards distance education, barriers against distance education, and the acquisitions due to distance education. A five-point Likert scale was used to assess participants' responses to the different domains (mean score ± standard deviation). RESULTS: Seventy-eight percent of the academic staff and 65% of the students responded to the survey. Participants' views were positive for readiness for the shift to distance education during the full lockdown (3.89±0.42 for academic staff and 3.82±0.50 for students) with almost similar evaluation for the readiness during the blended learning period (3.91±0.44 for staff and 3.83±0.59 for students). The findings showed a generally positive perception towards distance education (3.59± 0.67 for academic staff and 3.47±0.64 for students). The acquisitions due to distance education were also positive (3.95±0.72 for academic staff and 3.78±0.77 for students). Nonetheless, some barriers that affected distance education were raised with an overall neutral view from both academic staff (3.31±0.72) and students (3.31±0.64), with different responses for the individual items. Qualitative findings from the focus group discussions explored the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges, with emphasis on the areas for improvement. CONCLUSION: Although the shift for distance education was out of a sudden, participants showed overall positive views about their experience with distance education and highlighted areas for improvement.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to gather data from female students studying in both health and non-health colleges at Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University and report the prevalence, reasons, and determinants of dietary supplements use. METHODS: A month-long cross-sectional study was conducted in health and non-health colleges affiliated to Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. Convenient sampling was employed, and the data was gathered through an online survey using the English and Arabic versions of the Dietary Supplement Questionnaire (DSQ). The data was analyzed using SPSS version 23 and Medcalc. The study was approved by an ethics committee. RESULTS: Data from 545 participants was collected. The overall prevalence of dietary supplement use was 32.7% (95% CI: 29.06%- 36.51%). The prevalence was 29.77% (95% CI: 25.29%- 34.56%) among students at all health colleges combined and, it was 37.50% (95% CI: 31.36%- 43.96%) among students at all non-health colleges. Most students used a brand product, spent a monthly cost of SAR 286 (USD 76.3) on supplements and agreed that supplements were good for health (N = 392, 71.9%). Students from non-health- colleges agreed that dietary supplements are good for health in greater numbers as compared to non-health college students (p < 0.001). Students aged ≥ 20 years, studying in a non-health college and up to 3rd year of study, were more 2 times more likely to agree that dietary supplements are good for health. CONCLUSION: Supplements were commonly used among female students at this university however, it was quite low as compared to students from other local and regional universities. Prevalence was higher in non-health colleges as compared to health colleges and the most commonly used supplements were brand products and, multivitamins, used for general health and well-being. This highlights the inclination of students towards supplement use.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Long-term anticoagulation therapy, particularly with warfarin, is usually associated with poor adherence and low patient satisfaction. However, previous studies have highlighted the possibility that individual perceptions of warfarin differ according to cultural practices. This study validated the psychometric properties of the translated Arabic version of the Anti-Clot Treatment Scale (ACTS) for patients on warfarin therapy in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A cross-sectional multicenter study was conducted at the three main medical centers in Riyadh. Stratified sampling was employed to recruit Arabic-speaking patients who had been taking warfarin for a minimum of 3 months for any indication. The patients completed the specific ACTS along with the generic Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication (TSQM 1.4) at two clinic visits. The psychometric performance of the ACTS was evaluated using well-established criteria: feasibility, reliability, and validity. RESULTS: One hundred thirty-six patients participated in the study (mean age: 50.68 ± 14.6 years; range: 19-97). Overall, the patients reported moderate Burdens and Benefits scores (44 ± 9.9 and 11.92 ± 2.4, respectively) compared to the reference range for each subscale (12-60 and 3-15, respectively); however, they reported lower Burdens scores than other populations. Consistent with the original ACTS validation study, the criteria for acceptability (data targeting, floor/ceiling effects, and skewness) were satisfied; in fact, the Arabic version exhibited better item- and scale-level distributions of data than versions in other languages. The ACTS subscales also demonstrated satisfactory test-retest reliability with significant intraclass correlation coefficients ((ICC ≥ 0.5); p < 0.001) and good internal consistency (all Cronbach's alpha values exceeded 0.7). Exploratory factor analysis supported the 2-factor loading model. Interestingly, the Arabic version exhibited greater convergent validity with the TSQM subdomains (r = 0.61). CONCLUSIONS: This study provides convincing evidence that the Arabic versions of both the ACTS Burdens and ACTS Benefits scales are equivalent to other versions in terms of psychometric performance, as measured using reliability and validity criteria. These properties support the great potential of the Arabic ACTS to accurately reflect patient satisfaction, identify aspects of treatment that need improvement in clinical practice, and compare treatment satisfaction across different anticoagulant therapies or cultures in research.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To assess the presence of medication safety practices in Khartoum State hospitals. METHODS: A previously used questionnaire was used to evaluate medication safety practices. The main practices evaluated were the presence of a medication safety committee and error-reporting system, look-alike sound-alike (LASA) medications list, control of concentrated electrolyte solutions, care transitions, information technology, drug information and other medication safety practices. The primary investigator visited a stratified sample from all the three cities that comprise Khartoum State and interviewed the pharmacy supervisor of each hospital. Descriptive statistics were performed using SPSS V.22. RESULTS: A total of 41 senior pharmacists or pharmacy supervisors from 41 hospitals were interviewed. Only 2% of the hospitals had a list of LASA medications and 5% had a list of error-prone abbreviations. Only 5% of the hospitals had a medication safety committee, and none of the hospitals had a medication safety officer. None of the hospitals involved pharmacists in obtaining medication histories. Concentrated electrolytes were available in the floor stock in 67% of the hospitals. Although 24% of the hospitals used a computer system in their pharmacy to enter prescriptions, none of these hospitals required entry of patient allergies before entering a drug order. CONCLUSIONS: Most of the hospitals in Khartoum State did not implement basic medication safety practices. Therefore, the Ministry of Health in Sudan should enforce laws and regulations making implementation of medication safety practices mandatory to ensure patient safety.

BACKGROUND: The contribution of community pharmacists to the provision of primary healthcare is widely believed to be important. The health authority in Sudan is interested in developing pharmaceutical care (PC) practice as a means of improving the provision of primary healthcare services. However, there is a need for research to inform this development. OBJECTIVES: To describe the current roles of community pharmacists; to describe their views about their current role and potential future role with regard to PC practice. SETTINGS: Community pharmacies in Khartoum State, Sudan. METHODS: This study applied a two-phase mixed methods approach. The first phase used a pre-tested, piloted, self-administered questionnaire with a stratified random sample of 246 pharmacies (26 % of total number) in Khartoum State. The sample size was based on 95 % confidence level, 5 % confidence interval and the response rate from the pilot study. The second phase applied semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 24 of the responded pharmacists. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Current activities of community pharmacists; pharmacists' opinions on PC practice and the barriers they might face in its implementation. Results For the questionnaire study the response rate was 83 % (205/246). Most dispensing activities were reported to be performed by a vast majority of respondents (94 % or more). A few PC activities were reported to be already performed by the majority of participants e.g. checking indications, interactions and contraindication (83 %, n = 171) and checking each repeat prescription for compliance (78 %, n = 159). However, the majority of PC activities were not performed. Nearly all pharmacist (99 %, n = 203) were willing to further implement PC practice, but reported a number of barriers to its implementation. CONCLUSION: Efficient dispensing of prescriptions is the primary focus of community pharmacists in Khartoum State with some PC activities. The pharmacists have expressed a willingness to implement PC practice but indicated a number of barriers to successful implementation.
