ABSTRACT

AIM: To define the frequency, etiology, and risk factors of invasive mycoses (IM) in patients with allogeneic (allo) and autologous (auto) hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and to evaluate the impact of IM on overall survival (OS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data on 356 patients after allo-HSCT (n = 237) and auto-HSCT (n = 119) from 2000 to 2010 were analyzed. The diagnosis of IM was established according to the EORTC/MSG 2008 criteria. RESULTS: The incidence of myocardial infarction (MI) was 19.1%; that was 23.2 and 10.9% in allo-HSCT and auto-HSCT recipients, respectively. The incidence of MI following allo-HSCT was significantly higher than that after auto-HSCT. Aspergillus spp. (82.3%), Candida spp. (11.8%), zygomycetes (Mucor spp., Rhizopus spp.) (4.4%), and Cryptococcus neoformans (1.5%) are involved in the etiology of MI. Its risk factors are acute lymphoblastic leukemia; non-myeloablative conditioning regimen; use of fludarabine and antilymphocyte globulin; peripheral blood stem cells as a source for grafting; long-term lymphopenia, neutropenia; use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF); acute graft-versus-host reaction; grade 3-4 mucositis; infections, such as cytomegalovirus, sepsis. The development of MI in HSCT recipients did not significantly reduce one-year OS after allo-HSCT and auto-HSCT--53.6 and 55% and 86.7 and 90.3% (with and without MI, respectively). In patients with invasive aspergillosis, OS (12 weeks after IM being diagnosed) was significantly longer in those with other invasive mycoses (91.3 and 50%, respectively). CONCLUSION: The incidence of MI after allo-HSCT was higher than that after auto-HSCT. MI induced by the fungal genus Aspergillus spp. was most common. Along with known risk factors, there was a poor prognostic factor, such as G-CSF. The development of MI failed to affect one-year OS, which was indicative of the adequate quality of its early diagnosis and therapy. The prognosis was poor in patients with invasive candidiasis, zygomycosis, and cryptococcosis. Investigations need to be continued to specify the reasons for high morbidity rates and the factors provoking discussion by investigators worldwide.

ABSTRACT

The time taken by the first four cleavage divisions has been determined for the carp, pike, and whitefish (Coregonus peled) at various temperatures; a quantity tau-0 was calculated, and plotted against temperature. From the curves plotted for all species investigated, it was found that in the salmon but not in the more thermophile species the rate of division within the spawning temperature range could be described by a constant Q 10 which had a value exceeding 2 or 3. Criteria for determing the lower temperature limit of the range for optimum development of teleosts are discussed.

ABSTRACT

The incorporation of labeled precursors (3H- and 14C-uridine) into the fractions of salt-insoluble RNAs and or rRNA was studied in the axolotl embryos at different stages of early development (from the end of synchronous cleavage divisions until the end of gastrulation). RNA preparations isolated from the embryos at all stages studied contained incorporated radioactivity. The radioactivity of salt-insoluble RNAs markedly increased at the beginning of blastulation and continued to grow, but less steeply, at the subsequent developmental stages. The sedimentation analysis has shown that the label is incorporated into the precursors and mature molecules of rRNA, beginning at least from the blastulation.

ABSTRACT

The absolute (in min.) and relative (in the number of tau0) duration of the periods of cleavage, epiboly and that between the onset of gastrulation and the stage of 10 pairs of somites were determined in Cyprinus carpio L., Misgurnus fossils L., Esox lucius L. and Coregonus peled Gmel. at different constant temperatures. The stability of the dimensionless characteristics for the duration of each of these periods in the species in question within the limits of optimum temperatures was shown. A comparison of the relative duration of the same periods of early embryogenesis in C. carpio, M. fossilis, E. lucius, Salmo trutta L. morpha fario and S. gairdneri Rich. has shown that in the species under comparison the relative durations of the period of synchronous cleavage divisions are similar, whereas those of the period of asynchronous cleavage divisions differ. The relative durations were found to be similar for the period between the onset of gastrulation and the stage of 10 pairs of somites in M. fossilis, E. lucius and 2 species of Salmo. Differences were revealed in the relative duration of the period of epiboly; the average relative rate of the movement of blastoderm cells toward the vegetative pole is similar in the species with the eggs of small size (C. carpio, M. fossilis, Coregonus peled) and increases with the egg size. The temporal relationships between the embryonic periods under study in the species in question and possible mechanism which determine these relationships are considered with respect to the data on egg structure, as well as on the stage when the isolated blastoderm acquires the capacity of differentiation in vitro.
