ABSTRACT

The shape of Janus particles is directly connected to their adsorption behavior. Janus tadpole polymers offer a unique topological architecture that includes competition between entropic, enthalpic, and topological terms in the adsorption free energy; accordingly, non-trivial adsorption behavior patterns are expected. We study the surface adsorption of Janus tadpole polymers by means of Monte Carlo simulations, finding that, depending on which part of the tadpole polymers is preferentially adsorbing on the surface, very different types of behavior for both the adsorbed polymeric phase and of the brush arise. The adsorbed phase and the brush mutually influence each other, leading to a variety of phenomena such as nematic ordering of the adsorbed stiff tadpole tails and intriguing changes in the territoriality of adsorbed ring polymers on the surface. We analyze in detail our findings, revealing the mechanisms behind the organization and ordering, and opening up new possibilities to tune and control the structure of such systems.

ABSTRACT

Chronic wounds represent one of the complications that might occur from the disruption of wound healing process. Recently, there has been a rise in interest in employing nanotechnology to develop novel strategies for accelerating wound healing. The aim of the present study was to use a green synthesis method to obtain AgNPs/NaLS systems useful for wounds management and perform an in-depth investigation of their behavior during and post-synthesis as well as of their biological properties. The colloids obtained from silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and commercial sodium lignosulfonate (NaLS) in a single-pot aqueous procedure have been fully characterized by UV-Vis, FT-IR, DLS, TEM, XRD, and XPS to evaluate the synthesis efficiency and to provide new insights in the process of AgNPs formation and NaLS behavior in aqueous solutions. The effects of various concentrations of NaLS (0-16 mg/mL) and AgNO3 (0-20 mM) and of two different temperatures on AgNPs formation have been analyzed. Although the room temperature is feasible for AgNPs synthesis, the short mixing at 70 °C significantly increases the speed of nanoparticle formation and storage stability. In all experimental conditions AgNPs of 20-40 nm in size have been obtained. The antimicrobial activity assessed quantitatively on clinical and reference bacterial strains, both in suspension and biofilm growth state, revealed a broad antimicrobial spectrum, the most intensive inhibitory effect being noticed against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli strains. The AgNP/NaLS enhanced the NO extracellular release, potentially contributing to the microbicidal and anti-adherence activity by protein oxidation. Both AgNP/NaLS and NaLS were non-hemolytic (hemolytic index<5%, 2.26 ± 0.13% hemolysis) and biocompatible (102.17 ± 3.43 % HaCaT cells viability). The presence of AgNPs increased the antioxidative activity and induced a significant cytotoxicity on non-melanoma skin cancer cells (62.86 ± 8.27% Cal-27 cells viability). Taken together, all these features suggest the multivalent potential of these colloids for the development of novel strategies for wound management, acting by preventing infection-associated complications and supporting the tissue regeneration.

ABSTRACT

Acute respiratory infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children worldwide. Dietary and nutritional interventions, including minerals and vitamin supplementation, have been explored as potential treatments for these infections. However, the evidence on their efficacy is limited and inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to provide a comprehensive summary of the available evidence on the effectiveness of dietary and nutritional interventions for treating acute respiratory tract infections in children. A systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines in April 2022 and updated in April 2023. Clinical trials focusing on dietary or nutritional interventions, including supplementations, in children with acute respiratory tract infections were included. The selection of interventions and outcomes was based on biological plausibility. Data were extracted using a standardized form, and the risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool. Meta-analysis was performed using random-effect models. A total of 50 studies were included in the review. Four trials were conducted in low, 32 in lower-middle, 12 in upper-middle, and only two in high-income countries. The studies evaluated various dietary interventions, including zinc, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin D, and probiotics. The results of individual studies on the efficacy of these interventions were mixed, with some showing positive effects on clinical outcomes such as duration of symptoms, while others showed no significant impact. Meta-analysis was conducted for zinc supplementation in children with pneumonia, and the pooled results suggested a potential limited benefit in terms of reduced hospital length of stay but not time to recovery. Meta-analyses on vitamin D did not show any effect in children with pneumonia. This systematic review fills a critical gap in the literature by synthesizing the available evidence on the efficacy and safety of nutritional or dietary interventions for acute respiratory tract infections in children. The findings indicate no dietary or nutritional intervention can currently be recommended for the routine treatment of respiratory tract infections in children based on single supplement studies. The metanalysis suggests that zinc supplementation might have a beneficial effect on length of hospitalization in children with pneumonia. New studies are needed to establish more conclusive evidence for pediatric acute respiratory diseases especially for children living in a context of high-income countries.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Inflammation underpinning acute decompensation (AD) of liver disease is an important driver for the development of acute-on-chronic liver failure or death. We aimed to investigate associations between inflammatory biomarkers and impaired cardiac function in patients admitted for AD of cirrhosis. METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of a well-characterized prospective cohort of patients with AD of liver disease admitted to a tertiary referral center. All patients had echocardiographic assessment of cardiac function and serum samples at admission. We reclassified patients according to the CLIF-C AD score, measured inflammatory (IL-6, IL-8, TNF-ɑ, CD206) and cardiac-specific (NT-proBNP, troponin T) biomarkers and tested for associations with echocardiographic parameters of cardiac function. We explored the impact on outcome of these factors in multivariate analysis. RESULTS: We included 70 patients (58 ±â€…10 years, 28 women), with a mean CLIF-C AD score of 47 ±â€…7. Thirty-nine patients (56%) fulfilled the echocardiographic criteria for cardiac dysfunction. We found associations between parameters of diastolic dysfunction and serum concentrations of IL-6 and CD206. Echocardiographic parameters of cardiac function were not associated with markers of liver dysfunction such as the CLIF-C AD score. In multivariate analysis higher MELD, higher NT-proBNP, and IL-8 concentrations as well as the absence of echocardiographic criteria for cardiac dysfunction significantly associated with death during follow-up. CONCLUSION: We found evidence in favor of a clinically relevant link between serum biomarkers of inflammation (IL-6, CD206) and echocardiographic signals of cardiac dysfunction in patients with acutely decompensated cirrhosis.

INTRODUCTION: Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is a haematological disease associated with a dismal prognosis, despite major progress made in recent years in terms of antileukemic agents and supportive care. METHODS: We investigated the results of the intensive treatment of 133 fit AML patients (de novo and secondary) from a referral cancer centre in Romania, treated between January 2015 and December 2021. RESULTS: We included 79 male and 54 female patients with a median age of 53 years (range 18-70). Molecular biology analysis was available for 82.7% of patients, whereas karyotype analysis was only available for 33% of patients. The median overall survival (OS) was 8.7 months, and the disease-free survival rate was 26.3% at a median follow-up of 33.7 months. The complete remission (CR) rate after induction was 48.9% for all patients and 61.9% for patients who were assessable (excluding patients who died before being assessed for response). Twelve patients underwent allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT), with the median OS not reached. Early mortality (EM), defined as death during the first 30 days after admission, was 17.3%, with the main cause of death being septic shock (78.3%). Elderly patients (≥60 years of age) had a lower OS, more primary refractory disease, and higher rates of early mortality. CONCLUSION: Complete remission rates and OS in our cohort were lower than in other reports. Early mortality was unexpectedly high, mainly due to infections, which were the main causes of death in our cohort.

Aim: A series of new hybrid molecules with two iodine atoms on the sides were synthesized. Methods: A one-pot, two-component method with trifluoroacetic acid as an effective catalyst to obtain dihydro-pyrrol-2-one compounds was developed. Short reaction times, a cheap catalyst, high yields and clean work-up are benefits of this method. Results: The chemical structures of the newly synthesized compounds were verified through spectroscopic techniques. Their antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans was tested in vitro. Conclusion: NC- and OH- radicals confer broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, including against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and yeasts. Compounds 3g >7 and >9 were most active on the two bacterial species, while 3l >9 and >3i were most active against the fungal strain.

Real-time monitoring, simple operation, and cheaper methods for detecting immunological proteins hold the potential for a solid influence on proteomics and human biology, as they can promote the onset of timely diagnoses and adequate treatment protocols. In this work we present an exploratory study suggesting the applicability of resistive-pulse sensing technology in conjunction with the α-hemolysin (α-HL) protein nanopore, for the detection of the chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) e-antigen (HBeAg). In this approach, the recognition between HBeAg and a purified monoclonal hepatitis B e antibody (Ab(HBeAg)) was detected via transient ionic current spikes generated by partial occlusions of the α-HL nanopore by protein aggregates electrophoretically driven toward the nanopore's vestibule entrance. Despite the steric hindrance precluding antigen, antibody, or antigen-antibody complex capture inside the nanopore, their stochastic bumping with the nanopore generated clear transient blockade events. The subsequent analysis suggested the detection of protein subpopulations in solution, rendering the approach a potentially valuable label-free platform for the sensitive, submicromolar-scale screening of HBeAg targets.

Background: The primary goal of this study was to determine the time spent completing moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) among adults with atrial fibrillation (AF). Secondary aims examined MVPA and sitting time (ST) by AF subtypes (ie, paroxysmal, persistent, long-standing persistent, and permanent) and associations between MVPA or ST and knowledge, task self-efficacy, and outcome expectations. Methods: An observational study was conducted in the Champlain region of Ontario, Canada. AF patients completed a survey to determine MVPA and ST using the Short-Form International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Results: A total of 619 patients (66% male; median age 65 years [95% CI 64-67 years]) completed the survey. Median MVPA and ST were 100 (60-120) min/wk and 6 (5-6) h/d; 56% of patients were not meeting the Canadian 24H Movement Guidelines. Most patients (54%) did not know/were unsure of the MVPA recommendations, yet 72% thought physical activity should be part of AF management. Positive correlations were found between higher MVPA levels and the following: (i) speaking to a healthcare professional about engaging in physical activity for managing AF (ρ = 0.108, P = 0.017); (ii) greater confidence regarding ability to perform physical activity and muscle-strengthening exercise (ρ = 0.421, P < 0.01); and (iii) patient agreement that AF would be better managed if they were active (ρ = 0.205, P < 0.01). Conclusions: Many AF patients do not meet the MVPA recommendations, which may be due to lack of physical activity knowledge. Exercise professionals may help educate patients on the benefits of physical activity, improve task-self efficacy, and integrate MVPA into patient lifestyles.


Introduction: Le principal objectif de la présente étude était de déterminer le temps consacré à faire de l'activité physique modérée à vigoureuse (APMV) chez les adultes atteints de fibrillation auriculaire (FA). Les objectifs secondaires visaient à examiner l'APMV et le temps en position assise (TA) selon les sous-types de FA (c.-à-d. paroxystique, persistante, persistante de longue durée et permanente) et les associations entre l'APMV ou le TA et les connaissances, le sentiment d'auto-efficacité et les attentes de résultats. Méthodes: Nous avons réalisé une étude observationnelle dans la région de Champlain, en Ontario, au Canada. Les patients atteints de FA ont rempli une enquête pour déterminer l'APMV et le TA à l'aide du questionnaire court International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Résultats: Un total de 619 patients (66 % d'hommes; âge médian de 65 ans [IC à 95 % 64-67 ans]) a rempli l'enquête. L'APMV et le TPA médians étaient de 100 (60-120) min/sem et de 6 (5-6) h/j; 56 % des patients ne répondaient pas aux Directives canadiennes en matière de mouvement sur 24 heures. La plupart des patients (54 %) ne connaissaient pas les recommandations d'APMV ou n'étaient pas certains de les connaître, mais 72 % pensaient que l'activité physique devrait faire partie de la prise en charge de la FA. Nous avons observé des corrélations positives entre les degrés plus élevés d'APMV et ce qui suit : (i) le fait de parler à un professionnel de la santé de la pratique de l'activité physique pour prendre en charge la FA (ρ = 0,108, P = 0,017); (ii) la confiance accrue quant à la capacité de faire de l'activité physique et les exercices de renforcement musculaire (ρ = 0,421, P < 0,01); (iii) l'accord du patient sur le fait que la pratique de l'activité physique contribuerait à une meilleure prise en charge de la FA (ρ = 0,205, P < 0,01). Conclusions: Plusieurs patients atteints de FA ne répondaient pas aux recommandations d'APMV, possiblement en raison du manque de connaissances concernant l'activité physique. Les professionnels de l'activité physique peuvent contribuer à l'éducation des patients afin de leur faire connaître les avantages de l'activité physique, améliorer leur auto-efficacité et intégrer l'APMV à leur mode de vie.

ABSTRACT

To alleviate solubility-related shortcomings associated with the use of neutral peptide nucleic acids (PNA), a powerful strategy is incorporate various charged sidechains onto the PNA structure. Here we employ a single-molecule technique and prove that the ionic current blockade signature of free poly(Arg)-PNAs and their corresponding duplexes with target ssDNAs interacting with a single α-hemolysin (α-HL) nanopore is highly ionic strength dependent, with high salt-containing electrolytes facilitating both capture and isolation of such complexes. Our data illustrate the effect of low ionic strength in reducing the effective volume of free poly(Arg)-PNAs and augmentation of their electrophoretic mobility while traversing the nanopore. We found that unlike in high salt electrolytes, the specific hybridization of cationic moiety-containing PNAs with complementary negatively charged ssDNAs in a salt concentration as low as 0.5 M is dramatically impeded. We suggest a scenario in which reduced charge screening by counterions in low salt electrolytes enables non-specific, electrostatic interactions with the anionic backbone of polynucleotides, thus reducing the ability of PNA-DNA complementary association via hydrogen bonding patterns. We applied an experimental strategy with spatially-separated poly(Arg)-PNAs and ssDNAs, and present evidence at the single-molecule level suggestive of the real-time, long-range interactions-driven formation of poly(Arg)-PNA-DNA complexes, as individual strands entering the nanopore from opposite directions collide inside a nanocavity.

PURPOSE: Graves' orbitopathy (GO) is a rare condition in children often considered to be a less severe condition than at an older age. The aim of our study was to analyse if there are any factors that distinguish paediatric from adult GO in order to provide guidelines for assessing and managing paediatric GO. METHODS: Study design is a multicentre retrospective observational case series; 115 paediatric patients diagnosed with GO who visited our university medical centres in the Netherlands and Iran between 2003 and 2019 were submitted for complete ophthalmological examinations, serological testing and/or orbital imaging. Main outcome measures focussed on the natural course and clinical picture as well as medical and surgical treatment in paediatric GO. RESULTS: Clinical findings included proptosis (n = 97; 84.3%), eyelid retraction (n = 77; 67%) and diplopia (n = 13; 11.3%). Ninety-two patients (80%) presented with mild disease, 21 (18.3%) with moderate-severe disease and two (1.7%) with severe GO. Five patients (4.3%) underwent intravenous glucocorticoids and 25 patients underwent orbital decompression surgery. Strabismus surgery due to primary involvement of extraocular muscles was performed in two patients (1.7%). Overall, rehabilitative surgical treatment was planned in 31 patients (26.9%) with inactive disease. Two patients experienced reactivation of the disease. CONCLUSION: Despite the fact that paediatric and adult GO are considered two separate entities, they might be the same disease with two different clinical phenotypes. Paediatric GO population presents with a comparable clinical picture regarding both soft tissue involvement and proptosis, which may require surgical intervention. Proptosis was present in the majority of paediatric GO patients. Orbital decompression was performed in 21.7% of patients.

ABSTRACT

The implication of nanopores as versatile components in dedicated biosensors, nanoreactors, or miniaturized sequencers has considerably advanced single-molecule investigative science in a wide range of disciplines, ranging from molecular medicine and nanoscale chemistry to biophysics and ecology. Here, we employed the nanopore tweezing technique to capture amino acid-functionalized peptide nucleic acids (PNAs) with α-hemolysin-based nanopores and correlated the ensuing stochastic fluctuations of the ionic current through the nanopore with the composition and order of bases in the PNAs primary structure. We demonstrated that while the system enables the detection of distinct bases on homopolymeric PNA or triplet bases on heteropolymeric strands, it also reveals rich insights into the conformational dynamics of the entrapped PNA within the nanopore, relevant for perfecting the recognition capability of single-molecule sequencing.

Block copolymer stars (BCSs) have been demonstrated to constitute versatile, self-assembling building blocks with tunable softness, functionalization, and shape. We investigate the dynamical properties of suspensions of short-arm BCSs under linear shear flow by means of extensive particle-based multiscale simulations. We determine the properties of the system for representative values of monomer packing fraction ranging from semidilute to concentrate regimes. We systematically analyze the formed network structures as a function of both shear rate and packing fraction, the reorganization of solvophobic patches, and the corresponding radial correlation functions. Connecting our findings with rheology, we calculate the viscosity as a function of shear rate and discuss the implications of the found shear thinning behavior.

ABSTRACT

Fast, cheap and easy to use nucleic acids detection methods are crucial to mitigate adverse impacts caused by various pathogens, and are essential in forensic investigations, food safety monitoring or evolution of infectious diseases. We report here a method based on the α-hemolysin (α-HL) nanopore, working in conjunction to unmodified citrate anion-coated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), to detect nanomolar concentrations of short single-stranded DNA sequences (ssDNA). The core idea was to use charge neutral peptide nucleic acids (PNA) as hybridization probe for complementary target ssDNAs, and monitor at the single-particle level the PNA-induced aggregation propensity AuNPs during PNA-DNA duplexes formation, by recording ionic current blockades signature of AuNP-α-HL interactions. This approach offers advantages including: (1) a simple to operate platform, producing clear-cut readout signals based on distinct size differences of PNA-induced AuNPs aggregates, in relation to the presence in solution of complementary ssDNAs to the PNA fragments (2) sensitive and selective detection of target ssDNAs (3) specific ssDNA detection in the presence of interference DNA, without sample labeling or signal amplification. The powerful synergy of protein nanopore-based nanoparticle detection and specific PNA-DNA hybridization introduces a new strategy for nucleic acids biosensing with short detection time and label-free operation.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is one of the most common disorders and its pathophysiological mechanisms are still under research, oxidative stress being emphasized as an important contributor. This study aimed to analyze the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and oxidative/anti-oxidant balance in migraine patients. METHODS: Two groups of subjects were evaluated: a group of patients with migraine and a control group of healthy volunteers. RNFL thickness was assessed for all subjects by the ocular coherence tomography spectral domain (OCT-SD). The oxidative stress parameter, namely nitric oxide (NOx), malondialdehyde (MDA), and total oxidative stress (TOS) were assessed. The antioxidant capacity of plasma was evaluated by assessing the level of catalase, and total anti-oxidative (TOS) capacity. Migraine severity was graded using the Migraine Disability Assessment Score (MIDAS) questionnaire. RESULTS: All the oxidative stress parameters (NOx, MDA, and TOS) were significantly increased, and both parameters for anti-oxidative status were significantly decreased in the migraine group compared with the control group (p < 0.0001). Significant correlations with all the quadrants and different oxidative stress parameters were found, most involved being temporal quadrant. A significant positive correlation between catalase and macular RNFL thickness (inner ring, temporal quadrant) in migraine patients, for both eyes, was observed (p = 0.014 for the right eye and p = 0.12 for the left eye). CONCLUSION: The assessment of the oxidative stress/anti-oxidative balance together with RFLN thickness can constitute a promising method to evaluate the progression of the diseases. It can also contribute to the estimation of the efficiency of various therapies targeting oxidative stress and associated inflammation.

In this work, comparative studies on DNA-PNA and polyarginine-conjugated DNA-PNA duplexes unzipping inside the α-hemolysin nanopore (α-HL) are presented. We identified significant differences in the blockade currents, as the applied voltage across the nanopore facilitated the duplex capture inside the nanopore's vestibule against the constriction region, subsequent cDNA strand insertion inside the nanopore's ß-barrel past the constriction site, its complete unzip from the duplex, and translocation. We observed that inside the voltage-biased nanopore, polyarginine-conjugated DNA-PNA duplexes dehybridize faster than their DNA-PNA counterparts and proposed a model to describe the duplex unzipping. This study identifies key particularities of DNA-PNA duplex unzipping as it takes place inside the nanopore and being preceded by entrapment in the vestibule domain of the α-HL. Our results are a crucial step toward understanding the nucleic acids duplexes unzipping kinetics variability, in confined, variable geometries.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND Curcumin is an antioxidant that reduces inflammation and pain. This study aimed to assess the effect of pretreatment with naproxen and liposomal curcumin compared with naproxen and curcumin solution on oxidative stress parameters and pain in a rat model of migraine. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty-three male Wistar rats included a control group (n=9) and a rat model of migraine (n=54) induced by intraperitoneal injection of nitroglycerin (1 mg/0.1 kg). The rat model group was divided into an untreated control group (n=9), a group pretreated with naproxen alone (2.8 mg/kg) (n=9), a group pretreated with naproxen (2.8 mg/kg) combined with curcumin solution (1 mg/0.1 kg) (n=9), a group pretreated with naproxen (2.8 mg/kg) combined with curcumin solution (2 mg/0.1 kg) (n=9), a group pretreated with naproxen (2.8 mg/kg) combined with liposomal curcumin solution (1 mg/0.1 kg) (n=9) a group pretreated with naproxen (2.8 mg/kg) combined with liposomal curcumin solution (2 mg/0.1 kg) (n=9). Spectroscopy measured biomarkers of total oxidative status and nociception was tested using an injection of 1% of formalin into the rat paw. RESULTS Expression of biomarkers of oxidative stress and enhanced nociception were significantly increased following pretreatment with combined naproxen and liposomal curcumin compared with curcumin solution or naproxen alone (P<0.001). Combined curcumin solution and naproxen were more effective at a concentration of 2 mg/0.1kg for the first nociceptive phase (P<0.005). CONCLUSIONS In a rat model of migraine, combined therapy with liposomal curcumin and naproxen showed an improved antioxidant effect and anti-nociceptive effect.

ABSTRACT

The equilibrium properties of block copolymer star networks (BCS) are studied via computer simulations. We employ both molecular dynamics and multiparticle collisional dynamics simulations to investigate the self-organization of BCS with f = 9 functionalized arms close to their overlap concentrations under conditions of different fractions of functionalization and varying attraction strength. We find three distinct macroscopic self-organized states depending on fraction of attractive end-monomers and the strength of the attraction. At weak attractions, ergodic, diffusive liquids result, with short-lived bonds between the stars. As the attraction strength grows, the whole system forms a percolating cluster, while at the same time the individual molecules are diffusive. Finally, arrested gels emerge when the attractions become strong. The conformation of the BCS in these solutions is found to be strongly affected by the concentration, with the stars assuming typically spherical, open configurations in seeking to maximize inter-star associations as opposed to the inter-star collapse that results at infinite dilution, giving rise to strongly aspherical shapes and reduced sizes.

ABSTRACT

Curcumin (CC) is known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties and has already been tested for its efficiency in different diseases including diabetes mellitus (DM). New formulations and route administration were designed to obtain products with higher bioavailability. Our study aimed to test the effect of intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of liposomal curcumin (lCC) as pre-treatment in streptozotocin(STZ)-induced DM in rats on oxidative stress, liver, and pancreatic functional parameters. Forty-two Wistar-Bratislava rats were randomly divided into six groups (seven animals/group): control (no diabetes), control-STZ (STZ-induced DM -60 mg/100g body weight a single dose intraperitoneal administration, and no CC pre-treatment), two groups with DM and CC pre-treatment (1mg/100g bw-STZ + CC1, 2 mg/100g bw-STZ + CC2), and two groups with DM and lCC pre-treatment (1 mg/100g bw-STZ + lCC1, 2 mg/100g bw-STZ + lCC1). Intraperitoneal administration of Curcumin in diabetic rats showed a significant reduction of nitric oxide, malondialdehyde, total oxidative stress, and catalase for both evaluated formulations (CC and lCC) compared to control group (p < 0.005), with higher efficacy of lCC formulation compared to CC solution (p < 0.002, excepting catalase for STZ + CC2vs. STZ + lCC1when p = 0.0845). The CC and lCC showed hepatoprotective and hypoglycemic effects, a decrease in oxidative stress and improvement in anti-oxidative capacity status against STZ-induced DM in rats (p < 0.002). The lCC also proved better efficacy on MMP-2, and -9 plasma levels as compared to CC (p < 0.003, excepting STZ + CC2 vs. STZ + lCC1 comparison with p = 0.0553). The lCC demonstrated significantly better efficacy as compared to curcumin solution on all serum levels of the investigated markers, sustaining its possible use as adjuvant therapy in DM.
