ABSTRACT

For 180 patients suffering alcohol-withdrawal induced delirium, electrolytic concentration in the serum of Na, K, Ca, and Mg was determined in the early withdrawal phase, and the electroencephalograms of 95 delirium patients evaluated in respect of local and diffuse changes and epileptic activity, and compared in delirium patients with and without initial seizures. Delirium patients who had initial seizures suffered significantly longer-lasting periods of delirium and significantly more frequent electrolytic changes in the form of hypomagnesemia and hypopotassemia (hypokalemia). There was no significant difference in the EEG changes. A temporary metabolic disorder in the initial phase of the two-phase withdrawal process should be assumed to be the cause of seizures during alcohol withdrawal, and the pathogenetic significance of hypomagnesemia and hypopotassemia should be taken into consideration.

ABSTRACT

A series of EEG reading by automatic frequency analysis by means of Fast-Fourier transformation was taken, with a total of thirteen patients with acute ischemic infarction. Of the parameters under test, the total power-parameters, the relative performances of the delta and alpha wavebands, the delta/alpha index, and the alpha peak frequency variation proved their suitability in assessing clinical progress and in lateral localisation. Automatic frequency analysis adds to the range of tools available for EEG diagnosis, and can play its part in trend analysis during intensive therapy.

ABSTRACT

A helium-cooled IR spectrometer with a diffraction-limited telescope was launched on 23 Sept. 1983 from Aire-sur-l'Adour (France) as part of the MAP/Globus 1983 campaign. The float altitude of the balloon was 38 km. Limb scan measurements of atmospheric emissions were taken in the 5.5-19-microm wavelength region. The measurements were performed ~1 h before sunrise. From several spectral features volume mixing ratios of NO(2), H(2)O, CH(4), HNO(3), O(3), and N(2)O were derived.

ABSTRACT

Within the scope of an elektroencephalographic-computertomographic comperative study carried out in 430 patients, the concurrence of secondary brain stem damage due to mass displacement and herniation processes and parroxysmal generalised slow activity in the EEG ("intermittant frontal delta rhythms", "projected discharges", "subcortical signs") in intracranial space-occupying processes were studied among others. The occurrence of the EEG pattern was independent of the presence of brain stem displacements in about 20 and 25 per cent, respectively, of the 152 patients with supratentorial space occupations. The absence of the characteristics on 80 per cent of the patients with clear CT criteria for a secondary brain stem impairment shows that it is not suitable as a warning sign of an imminent intracranial decompensation and that in particular from the non-occurrence in the EEG no contribution to the operative risk and to the choice of the time of the operation can be derived. A relation between the occurrence of paroxysmal slow activity and the acuity of the course of the disease or the degree of malignity of cerebral tumours could not be verified. Possible causes of the inconstant occurrence of this EEG pattern in brain stem alterations are discussed.
