ABSTRACT

This study is to perform a systematic review of the literature on surgical correction of the upper lip in order to assess whether the subnasal lip lift technique improves lip aesthetics and maintains its stability. A systematic search was carried out using the PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, Cochrane Library and EMBASE databases, based on records published until July 2020. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. In the absence of randomized clinical trials, prospective or retrospective cohort studies, case control and case series were considered eligible. Of the 464 articles initially found by the two reviewers, 4 were selected, with 2 retrospective cohorts and 2 case series. The results of the studies showed that 92.4% of subnasal lip lift cases were performed in women with an age range between 21 and 65 years (mean of 36.6 years). Only one of the 4 studies did not contain information regarding the sex and age of the patients. The bull's horn excision pattern for subnasal lip lift was used to perform the subnasal lip lift in 75% of the included studies. All studies pointed to an improvement in lip aesthetics after the subnasal lip lift, based on anthropometric measures and the degree of patient satisfaction while maintaining results for varying periods of time (from 12 to 59.1 months). The studies included in this review suggest that the subnasal lip lift improves lip aesthetics in adult patients and maintains its stability for a certain period of time.

ABSTRACT

Aim: Evaluate the accuracy between the intraoral and extraoral scanning regarding the three dimensional (3D) deviation and distances between the implants, through 2 scanning methods. Settings and Design: An in vitro study. Materials and Methods: An edentulous mandibular model was used to install four implants and abutments, recommending 6 distances between the implants. Scans were performed using an intraoral (SI) and extraoral (SE) scanner for each studied group: Scanning with the scan bodies (SB) and device (SD) (n = 10). The files were imported into a surface evaluation program to assess 3D deviations and measure distances between implants. Statistical Analysis: Precision was assessed as the difference between files (Kruskal-Wallis test), while trueness was assessed from the difference between scans, applying the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney test. Results: As for the 3D deviations, SI showed accuracy, for the faces and positions of the implants in relation to the SE, in both scanning methods (P < 0.05). Regarding the capture of distances between implants, the SD scan obtained better trueness than the SB group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: We concluded that the type and scanning methods used did not influence the 3D deviations, while for distances, scanning with the device had better trueness.

ABSTRACT

Radicular cyst is a lesion of inflammatory nature that represents the most common odontogenic cyst. It has a frequency rate of 7-54% among the periapical radioluscences. Typically, the lesion is asymptomatic, usually located in the anterior maxilla and in most of the times ranging from 5 mm to 1.5 cm. In extensive lesions, when they occur, one can observe swelling, tooth mobility and displacement. Radiographically, there is a well-defined unilocular radiolucent image surrounding the apex of a tooth. As for treatment, tooth extraction and nonsurgical endodontic treatment are the most executed procedures; in extensive lesions, conservative endodontic treatment followed by biopsy and decompression have been successfully performed. The authors report a case of radicular cyst of great proportions in a patient aged 18 years. After diagnosis was confirmed by clinical and radiographic examinations, treatment plan consisted of surgical and nonsurgical endodontic treatment of the left maxillary canine. No signs of recurrence were found during follow-up. The present work aims at reporting a case of a large cystic lesion of 3.4 cm in the anterior maxilla in a young patient, and it is made a brief review of the literature regarding such pathological entity.
